We'll be heading out on a flat Vättern..
... and fish for my favorite fish at summer, and probably Europe's most beautiful fish
... the Char.
It's a pig. - It's a pig.
Good morning fishermen. It's really early in the morning
... I probably woke up at 3 am, same goes for Niclas.
He has slept around 2 hours and I have around 3.
However, since we'll be fishing for char, it doesn't matter.
I really enjoy fishing for char.
During the summer, size-fishing for other predators is not optimal.
So I end up fishing for char
... and Niclas has never fished for char before.
So I'll be teaching you and Niclas how to get started with the char fishing.
Niclas, are you excited for catching a pig-sized char today?
I'm insanely excited to catch a char.
We'll settle down the boat and head out.
The conditions are optimal today. Almost no wind.
Vättern is one of the biggest lakes in Europe
... making it hard locating the char.
However, since I've fished here before I know some spots
... Which I've marked on the sonar.
We'll be hammering these spots.
And also search for them by using our sonar.
let's head out Niclas!
We've just arrived to our spot, which was marked.
We'll use our electric engine to start with
... followed with our main engine. We'll drift using these.
After we've spotted some fish, we'll anchor.
The fish is located at 30-40 m at the bottom.
We'll be using a pirk, which we'll let sink to the bottom.
Steady and fast retrieve is the key for catching char.
The rods we're using are common vertical rods
... with a casting weight up to 60 g (2.1 oz).
And a regular low profile reel.
Niclas, I'll be handling the electric engine.
Do you prefer the big or small pirk? - I'll take the big one.
That's great, always aim high. - No one remembers a coward.
I'm using a fast-attach which allows me to easily switch baits.
There.
I'm using a fluorocarbon leader, 0.4 mm.
Our rods are rigged with 0.13 mm braided line
... so we'll start the engine and try locating the fish.
That we do.
Before we even managed to bring out the camera
... we spotted plenty of chars, located at the bottom.
Looks like bananas.
I'm so excited!
Just get the pirk to the bottom
... and remember to keep the break quite hard. - Yeah.
Just release the pirk to the bottom and keep an eye on the sonar.
You then start retrieving the pirk from the bottom or when the char notices it.
It's crucial to reel in quickly and steady since the char may otherwise lose interest.
Got one!
We managed to hook a fish immediately.
Like 5 casts before this one struck.
It's quite a big char.
Look at it.
It's a pig. - It's a pig.
Check it out, first char today Niclas.
I believe it's like 1.7 kg (4 lbs) or something.
What a great start! - Awesome!
Seems like this day can be successful!
It's crazy - let's release it.
Let's continue fishing
... I believe we can catch plenty of them.
Check this out - the char followed the lure
... plenty of char at the bottom - Niclas is right there.
Let's see if we'll attract more chars.
Reel in.
There!
Hooked it.
Char fishing is awesome.
The main reason why we woke up this early is due to
... the morning, the fish's activity is usually high.
10 minutes of fishing resulted in 2 chars.
Pirk is the bait for today.
Just by looking at the sonar - I can see plenty of fish at the bottom.
Let's release this fast and I'll hope you'll catch one aswell Niclas.
Holy... I love char fishing!
Seeing the fish following - hard strikes.
Have you reached the bottom? - Yes. - Reel in!
One is following.
Keep on reeling.
You lost it.
First off one was following, followed up by 2 other chars.
We've hammered this spot for 20 minutes, caught 2 fishes
... which is great.
However, one thing I've noticed is that
... fishing at the same spot for too long makes the chars less interested.
I then usually swap spots with direct result.
I'll start the engine and we'll keep searching for char at another spot.
Like 20 - 30 meters away.
After a while I finally managed to catch my first char.
It weighs 2.29 kg (5.8 lbs). - A lovely first char.
It's enjoyable to catch one of these.
We've struggled. The chars never really wanted to bite by looking at our sonar.
This type of a salmon specie is quite sensitive.
So we'll try to release it as soon as possible.
Let's release it. - Gently throw it into the water.
There we go.
So fun! They are very strong.
My rod was bent like an U
Let's catch more.
Niclas check out - such as big amount of fish! - Insane.
Go reach the bottom - I'll wait for you. - I've reached.
WHAT?!
After 2 hours of struggling to catch one, we've finally managed to get one.
The activity has certainly increased.
I've just caught mine when you after 5 minutes catch this.
They are so beautiful. I believe Niclas weighed 2 kg
... and I think this weighs that aswell. - I think so too.
Time to land it Tobbe.
It's so many chars at the sonar it's sick.
We just want to keep fishing!
Where's the plier? There it is.
Just unhooking it quickly. - Show her!
Here. A beauty.
Gorgeous. Let's release it. - Yes.
Got one!
Totally sick!
There are so many fish!
We barely had time to start fishing before Niclas got hooked up.
I believe this is a quit big one. - It feels big.
Probably bigger than the last one.
Much stronger.
The sight is so clear it's unbelievable.
This type of fishing is just awesome.
Around the same size.
Is it? - Perhaps a little bit bigger.
Let's net it.
Come on.
Holy, they are so strong.
Congrats Niclas!
The activity has increased, so exciting.
Char fishing. So fun.
No "Griskris".
I actually believed this one to be bigger since it was very strong.
I'm new to this type of fishing, somtimes you get tricked.
I just managed to catch the biggest fish for today.
It's close to 3 kg. A truly beauty.
It's full of energy.
Check it out. Any thoughts? - So pretty.
Must be around 3 kg. - I think so.
Quite unsure about the weight.
Should I weigh it?
No, I'll release it.
It's beautiful.
Good job Tobbe! - Thanks!
The clock has just reached 2 pm
... and it's so hot it's insane.
The activity from the char has stopped, which it usually does when fishing in the middle of the day.
It's not often Vättern lacks this much wind
... So we've been quite lucky with the weather.
The fishing has also been good.
What's ur take on this type of fishing Niclas?
All I have to say is:
Bring your mates and try it out. So enjoyable!
Well you can't just try it since the lake is so big?
But perhaps you can search information on how it's done properly.
If you have a possibility - try this.
The day has been great, so let's head home Niclas.
Take care and I'll see you around. Tight lines!
Don't forget to leave a like and subscribe!
Bye!
