Welcome to Ranger Reviews, a webseries where we look at episodes of the tv show, Power

Rangers and then discuss it!

Today, we're exploring the hundred and twenty seventh episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

as well as the fifteenth episode of Season 3, titled "The Potion Notion".

We begin this episode at school where Bulk and Skull bug Tommy and Kimberly, asking them

when was the last time Tommy took Kimberly out for a romantic evening.

Apparently, Bulk and Skull have to sell tickets for the Junior Police Ball, and Tommy asks

Kimberly, who gladly accepts.

On the moon, Rita yells at Zedd because he never takes her anywhere.

Zedd says that Serpentera is up and running and fully charged so that they can go away

on a second honeymoon.

Zedd tells Goldar to make sure that Finster finishes the monster he's been working on.

We then see Finster and Rito talking around the monster, and Finster accidently lets it

slip that Rita used a love potion on Lord Zedd.

Awkward.

Finster leaves, and Rito uses the love potion on the monster, walking her up.

Her name is Miss Chief, and Rito has a plan.

At the school, Miss Chief is in the hallway at school, but don't worry, she says right

away that "she loves being invisible".

Wow, we couldn't have shot the monster on a green screen and made it translucent at

least or something?

Okay then.

Kim is telling Tommy how much she's looking forward to the ball when she is hit by Miss

Chief's love potion.

She immediately sees Skull, and she falls for him right away, walking over and flirts

with him.

Tommy gets jealous, trying to get in between them, but Skull pushes him away.

I have to admit, this is nice because Skull has literally been into Kim since the first

episode.

In Ms. Applebee's class, Lieutenant Stone shows up, asking her if she's seen Bulk

or Skull, when he's hit by the love potion.

He starts hitting on Ms. Applebee, who is clearly embarrassed but like, into it?

Then, the monster is out in the hallway again, and while Bulk is making fun of Skull, he

gets hit, he sees Aisha, falling in love.

Aisha says "guys, we should go.

Something's going on."

On the moon, Goldar makes it very clear that he loves Zedd, and Rita should leave him and

his husband alone.

Just a reminder, no one has hit Goldar with the potion.

He's just really into Zedd.

At the park, Tommy and Kim come up, meeting with the others, and they talk about how things

have been weird, and Kim is acting like a lovesick puppy.

Billy suggests talking to Zordon, and just as they're about to leave, Goldar shows

up with Tengas, and Kim says "I have to protect Skull", which is really funny because

Skull is not there.

Ninja Ranger Power Now!

There's a really cool fight with the six fighting off their assailants, and of course,

Goldar gets hit onto the ground right away.

In Serpentera, Zedd and Rita are celebrating their second honeymoon together, and Zedd

says that Serpentera is running low on energy.

Rita says that she hasn't heard that line in 3000 years, insinuating that Zedd is lying

so that they will basically park and bone inside Serpentera.

There's an image you didn't know you'd get today!

Zedd is PISSED, and he called the moon, talking to Rito.

He asks Rito to put Goldar on the line, and he yells at Rito for not recharging Serpentera

when he told him to.

He also says that they're on their way back, and Goldar should make sure that that monster

is ready by the time they get back.

Meanwhile, Goldar bails from the fight with the Rangers.

At the Command Center, Tommy explains to Zordon how Kimberly doesn't think he's the hottest

thing to ever walk the Earth anymore, so she must be under a spell.

Alpha scans her while she says "Kimberly Ann Skullovitch" to see what her new last

name would sound like… then she tries Kimberly Hart-Skullovitch because she's a progressive

woman.

Alpha freaks out that Kim is under the spell of a love potion when the alarms go off, and

Zordon shows them Miss Chief.

During this Kim, decides this is the best time to whisper something random into Aisha's

ear.

I mean, she's in love, not socially unaware, right?

Tommy begs Zordon to turn Kim back to normal, but all of a sudden, Zordon has a complex

with tampering with human emotions, despite him literally recruiting teenagers to be soldiers

in a war they have nothing to do with.

Zordon says "uhm, maybe it'll wear off over time?", and they leave.

On the moon, Goldar finds Rito who is terrified that he'll get in trouble for sending down

on the monster without their permission.

Rito then mentions that she's down there with a love potion, and Goldar has an "aha"

moment, realizing that Rita tricked Zedd into marrying her.

He then screams for Finster, demanding an antidote for the love potion immediately.

At school, Principal Caplan is hit by Miss Chief, falling in love with Ms. Applebee.

Good day to be her, I guess.

Finster has already finished the antidote, and Goldar sends him down to test it on the

humans before they use it on Zedd.

Finster shows up, and he tells Miss Chief to go away, and he's apparently invisibile

too?

Whatever, he uses the antidote on Principal Caplan and Stone, turning them back to normal.

Then, he uses it on Bulk and Aisha, and Aisha is like "uhm, bye", walking away.

Then, finally, Finster uses it on Kimberly, and she freaks out, realizing she's flirting

with Skull.

She runs over to Tommy, and Tommy says it's a long story.

I mean, not really.

On the moon, Goldar, Rito, Miss Chief, and Finster are hanging out, talking about how

everything is back to normal.

Then, Rita and Zedd walk in, and Miss Chief for some reason sprays Rita, making her fall

in love with Goldar.

Okay, this is hands down the best episode of Power Rangers ever.

Now, Rita is chasing Goldar around, playing with his hair.

Then, Finster hits her with the antidote, and Rita freaks out, walking away.

Zedd walks in, confused as to what's going on, and he says "let's just send down

the monster already", and Miss Chief disappears.

At school, the Rangers get beeped from Zordon, and they find out that Miss Chief is in the

park.

It's morphin' time!

The Rangers run in, fighting Miss Chief who now has a giant gear shield.

By the way, no one has mentioned that Miss Chief is a fire hydrant monster this entire

episode.

Whatever, she keeps tossing her shield at them, but Tommy hits it away before Zedd and

Rita just make her giant.

They call out their Ninjazords, forming the Ninja Megazord.

They briefly fight Miss Chief who hits them once with her shield before they complain

that Tommy is needed.

He combines with them, forming the Ninja Falcon Megazord, and they kill the monster.

Whatever.

Goldar demands Finster uses the antidote on Zedd, and he does, and while it works, we

find out something amazing: Zedd is really in love with Rita.

Wow.

At the Junior Police Ball, everyone talks about how that monster was a hothead.

Don't try to force it now, guys.

Meanwhile, Ms. Applebee is dancing with Stone while Tommy and Kimberly are dancing too.

Kim apologizes for how she treated him, and she sees Skull, who is crushed.

She goes over, and she apologizes to him, asking him to dance and he asks if she wants

to step on his feet as well as his heart.

She then says that it's better for them to just be friends, and Skull is surprised

to hear her call them friends.

They make up, dancing.

The end.

Over the credits, we see an extended scene of Bulk first falling in love with Aisha.

That's it.

The episode touched on so many things that it didn't even have to.

First of all, it remembered that Rita drugged Zedd into marrying her, which was 25 episodes

ago or so.

Also, it touched on Skull's crush on Kimberly a bit, resolving that.

Also, it gave up Principal Caplan who hasn't been seen in what feels like forever.

Also, we find out that Zedd's love potion wore off a long time ago, and he's really

just been in love with her this entire time.

That's… amazing.

Seriously.

Honestly, there's nothing I'd change for this episode except maybe tie the whole "fire"

theme from the monster into the episode more, but that's such a minor thing, it's hardly

something I'd be offended over.

So, will next episode continue to be just as good?

Because I have to be honest: I'm loving Season 3 right now.

Until then, may the power protect you!

Misogyny and the Roots of Chauvinism - Duration: 21:17.

Welcome to the Endless Knot!

Today I'm looking at the tangled roots of chauvinism.

If you heard the word chauvinist today, you'd probably either think of a quaint term for

a man who looks down on women as inferior, or of someone who is blindly and excessively

patriotic.

The second meaning is the older, so let's start there.

The word is in fact an eponym, meaning it comes from a person's name, in this case

the possibly legendary Nicolas Chauvin, a soldier who supposedly served in the French

Army under Napoleon.

There isn't any evidence that he actually existed, but nevertheless he became famous

as a figure of blind patriotism and fervour for Napoleon, long after the Emperor's ousting,

and thus a figure of ridicule.

The word in French goes back to the 1830s, and makes its way into English at least as

early as the 1860s.

Towards the late 19th century, the term broadened to refer not only to excessive patriotism

but also to other forms of excessive loyalty or belief in the superiority of one's own

kind.

It was then picked up in Communist Party circles in phrases such as race chauvinism and white

chauvinism, in particular to counter racism in the United States.

And following the model of those phrases, women in the Communist Party seem to have

coined the term male chauvinism in the 1930s.

After a brief vogue, the term mostly disappeared from view, that is until the feminist movements

of the 60's and 70's.

The children of former Communist Party members apparently revived the word, and from 1968

it took off again.

However, the term didn't seem to have much staying power and began to decline in frequency

from the late 1970s.

The phrase had been further expanded to male chauvinist pig, perhaps initially to soften

its effect through humour, though this was soon picked up by mainstream media to mock

feminists — in fact the earliest citation of that full phrase in the Oxford English

Dictionary is in Playboy magazine, so perhaps it's not surprising that the term fell out

of favour!

Before the word chauvinism arose, the word misogyny could be used to refer to hatred

of women.

Greek misogynia and misogynes, used originally in reference to a disease or to a comic trope

of a grumpy old man who hates his wife, are composed of the elements misos "hatred"

and gyne "woman", distantly related to the English word queen.

Misogyny and misogynist make it into English in the 17th century, and develop an extended

meaning of prejudice against women in the 20th century, but as we'll soon see, starting

much earlier, Greek misogyny played a significant role in the development of western misogyny.

But first we have to finish looking at the word chauvinism and related terms.

It was around the time that the term male chauvinism came into vogue, specifically in

1970, when the word patriarchy started to be used by feminists to mean a society dominated

by men at the expense of women.

The word actually goes back to Greek, coming from pater "father" and arkhein "to

rule", and was used in various Christian senses such as referring to certain bishops

in the early church, with patriarchy first appearing in English in a 1561 translation

of a text by protestant reformer John Calvin, after whom the Calvinist church is named.

John Calvin, or Jean Calvin as he was known in his native French, is tied into this story

in another way, as the name Calvin is the Northern French equivalent of the name Chauvin,

from which we get the word chauvinism.

It should be further noted that the name Chauvin is derived from the French word chauve meaning

"bald" from Latin calvus.

So I suppose you could say that this etymology, along with the paternalistic fatherly patriarchy,

at least coincidentally, highlights the fact that we have old men to blame for sexual discrimination.

And it was this coincidental connection between Calvin and chauvinism that inspired me to

look at the religious roots of misogyny and the ties between chauvinism and other types

of discrimination.

It turns out that the confluence of the Christian tradition and Greek philosophy created a toxic

environment for women in western society for 2000 years.

Of course the west doesn't hold a monopoly on misogyny, which can be found in many cultures

around the world, and all available evidence suggests that misogyny is the oldest human

prejudice, but since we're looking at English vocabulary we'll have to stick with western

culture.

And to do that, we'll have to first turn to the Jewish tradition, which would later

become the foundation of Christianity.

That early Jewish society was patriarchal is not particularly surprising in the context

of the ancient world.

What is notable is that they had a monotheistic religion with a fall of man creation myth.

In the book of Genesis, Adam was created by God in his image and placed in paradise, the

Garden of Eden.

Eve was more of an afterthought, made from Adam's rib.

Now of course different churches which share this story (which is found in Judaism, Christianity,

and Islam) interpret the culpability of Adam and Eve in their expulsion from Eden differently,

but as the story in Genesis goes, Eve gave in to the temptations of the serpent and ate

the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, then shared that fruit with

Adam, and following this they both become ashamed of their nakedness.

Thus many have held Eve doubly responsible, or at least more responsible than Adam.

In addition to their expulsion from paradise, they are made to live mortal lives and Adam

must work for the necessities of life, in other words engage in agriculture, and Eve

and all women who follow her are given the extra punishments of being subservient to

their husbands and suffering the pains of childbirth.

So this story both justifies a patriarchal society with a lower status for women but

also figures women in terms of their role in sexuality (remember the shame of their

nakedness) and childbirth.

Interestingly, the Ancient Greeks also have a fall of man myth, the story of Pandora,

whose name means either "all gifted" or "all giving".

In the story as told by Hesiod in the 6th c BC men (and only men) had a trouble free

and happy existence, though they didn't have the secret of fire and had to eat their

meat raw.

The Titan Prometheus illicitly gave fire to men, and as part of the punishment for this,

Zeus ordered the creation of the first human woman, Pandora, not just as an afterthought

but specifically as a punishment, as she is endowed with seductive qualities as well as

a deceitful character, and she is referred to as kalon kakon "beautiful evil".

Pandora has with her a sealed jar that she is not supposed to open, but overcome with

curiosity she opens it, releasing pain and evil among men, leaving only hope in the jar.

This myth and the fact that the king of the Gods Zeus is depicted in many myths as a serial

rapist, provide a backdrop to Greek society.

Now outside of Athens there is a lack of evidence of what life was actually like for Greek women,

but it's Athenian culture which became the most profoundly influential on later western

culture.

Perhaps paradoxically, along with democracy, Athens in the 5th c BC developed an exceedingly

misogynistic attitude.

It's important to remember that that democracy was extremely limited, including only adult

male citizens, and supported through a slave economy.

In this society, women remained legally children always under the guardianship of a man, they

were (at least ideally) kept in a segregated part of the house and were not allowed to

leave the house unaccompanied, and received little to no education.

In addition to the practical reality of women's social inferiority in Athens, Athenian philosophers

developed a theoretical basis for misogyny, and the two most responsible for this are

Plato and Aristotle.

Somewhat paradoxically, Plato is sometimes taken as almost a protofeminist, since in

his work The Republic he describes an ideal society in which women receive the same education

as men and are among the ruling elite with the same responsibilities, and men and women

only differ in their biological roles in reproduction.

But this comes at the cost of the denial of their sexuality.

His is a sterile imagined world in which breeding is regulated and the parent-child relationship

is denied in favour of communally raised children.

However, it's Plato's idea of dualism which was to cause the most harm in the long

run.

Plato developed the theory of Forms in which he makes a distinction between a higher reality

in which exist ideal Forms of which physical existence is an imperfect reflection.

Only the intellect could engage with that higher reality, and all the stuff of physical

existence, including sexuality, was lesser, a falling away from perfection.

This dualism then becomes the philosophical basis for misogyny, with men associated with

the intellect and women with sexuality and the imperfect physical existence.

And the standard understanding of the nature of women in the ancient world, both in Greece

and later in Rome, is that they are sexually rapacious as a result of their connection

to the physical world.

So the misogynistic response to this was rooted in fear of women and of their sexuality, hence

the need to regulate and control them.

Plato's student Aristotle doubled down on this misogyny in scientific terms.

He explicitly held women to be inferior to men, and believed that women were mutilated,

undercooked, or imperfect males.

Oh, and in an odd connection to the roots of chauvinism, he believed that the lack of

baldness among women was proof of their childlike undeveloped nature!

Moving forward, it's during the Roman period that Christianity grows out of the Jewish

tradition, while also being heavily influenced by Greco-Roman philosophy.

It's a terrible irony that Christianity would become one of the systemic drivers of

misogyny, given that in its early years women played a key role in its formation and spread.

Jesus's statements about women in the gospels are free from misogyny; he frequently defended

women, and there were women among his followers.

And women seemed to have played central roles in the activities of the new religion as it

grew and spread.

The apostle Paul's contributions to the nature of Christianity are perhaps only second

to those of Jesus, and his attitudes toward women are somewhat contradictory.

Though he states that "there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Jesus

Christ" he also doubles down on the story of Adam and Eve, saying that women should

be subservient to their husbands.

And from Paul we get the notion that sexuality is sinful and that celibacy is the ideal,

but that if one couldn't handle chastity, it was better to marry than to burn.

So early Christianity provided the opportunity for women to choose a live a life of celibacy,

which at least provided women with some control over their own fertility, giving them perhaps

for the first time institutionally sanctioned reproductive choice.

By the way, the word celibacy comes from Latin caelebs "unmarried", of unknown origin

but perhaps connected to the Proto-Indo-European roots *kaiwelo- "alone" or *kehi-lo- "whole",

and only in the 1950s came to refer not only to 'remaining unmarried' but also to 'voluntary

abstinence from sexuality', but we'll come back to this later.

But it's when Christianity adopts that Platonic idea of dualism that things really go downhill.

The early Christian theologian and philosopher Augustine was influenced by neoplatonic philosophy,

seeing his own struggles as a contest between the desires of the flesh and the striving

of the will.

And Augustine is largely responsible for the concept of Original Sin, that that first trespass

in the Garden of Eden caused human beings to fall away from perfection, and ever since

humans have carried the burden of that sin, at least until the crucifixion of Christ.

Over the course of the middle ages that dualistic divide would continue to be the source of

misogyny, and paradoxically it would come along with the increasing elevation of the

figure of Mary mother of Jesus.

In AD 431 the Roman Church declared Mary was not only the mother of Jesus, but the Mother

of God.

She had also been declared a perpetual virgin.

If God was thought to be perfect, the mother of God couldn't be tainted by sin either.

It's actually kind of a domino effect.

The early churches first argued about whether Jesus was human or divine or some combination,

and Mary's status rose as a result of Jesus's elevation.

She was also deemed not to have suffered death, but to have been assumed body and soul directly

into heaven, a notion traceable back to at least the 5th century.

And she became known as the Queen of Heaven.

But in the long run that wasn't enough.

To explain her perfection, theologians eventually came up with the notion of the Immaculate

Conception, that from the moment of her conception God acted to keep her free from Original Sin

so that she existed in the state of perfection that Adam and Eve had before the fall, effectively

removing all notions of sexuality from her, thus giving women an impossible standard to

live up to: be perfect like Mary or you'll be the source of sin like Eve.

The 13th century theologian John Duns Scotus, so named because he hailed from Duns, Berwickshire

in Scotland, did a lot to develop this notion of the Immaculate Conception, though it didn't

become church dogma until much later.

Scotus, by the way, is also known for engaging with Plato's notion of Forms, specifically

the metaphysical problem of universals, arguing that universals, basically qualities, actually

exist and are not just mental constructs.

His philosophical followers, the Scotists, were later derisively referred to as Dunses

by humanists and protestant reformation theologians, thus giving us the word dunce, which like

chauvinist is a pejorative word derived from a person's name.

Duns Scotus is tied to the word chauvinism in another way, since Scotus's ideas about

intuitive cognition influenced Chauvin's name double, the protestant reformer John

Calvin, to argue that God can be "experienced".

Speaking of the Protestant Reformation, it would have mixed consequences for women.

The Protestants, who by the way downplayed the significance of Mary, allowed clergy to

marry, doing away with the rule requiring priestly celibacy.

This idea of celibacy had been gradually developed in the Roman Church but only became an absolute

rule in the 12th century.

The Protestant view contradicted Paul's teachings about the sinfulness of sexuality

even in marriage, and by doing so raised the status of marriage and therefore women.

But they also got rid of the monasteries and convents, thus removing options for women,

who could no longer choose a life outside of marriage and have control over their bodies

in terms of reproduction.

Protestants stressed the importance of direct access to scripture, which meant it was important

for both men and women to be able to read, thus improving education for women.

But they doubled down on patriarchal family structure with the father leading the household

in daily prayer.

Reformers like John Calvin felt that the woman's place was in the home, and John Knox, the

founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, wrote a polemical work with the fiery title

The First Blast Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women even attacking the idea of women

holding any civil authority.

In the 19th century and even later some churches, such as the Presbyterian Church of Scotland,

opposed the use of anaesthesia for women giving birth, since that meant they wouldn't suffer

the pains prescribed as their punishment in the story of Adam and Eve.

Now of course different Protestant churches had different ideas about women, such as the

Quakers who did sometimes allow women to preach, and in more recent years many Protestant churches

have supported social reforms like women's suffrage, and in the 20th century women clergy.

To date though women are still barred from the clergy in the Catholic Church.

And again, views differ around reproductive rights such as birth control and abortion

with not only Catholics but also many Protestants digging in their heels.

Getting back to the middle ages though, when more progressive ideas about women and sexuality

did arise, the Church unsurprisingly tended to crack down on them.

One dramatic example is the Church's reaction against Catharism, from the south of France.

The Cathars, from Latin Cathari meaning "the pure", ultimately from Greek katharos "pure",

thus related to catharsis, literally "a cleansing or purging", took the idea of

dualism to extremes.

They believed that there were two Gods, the God of the Old Testament and the God of the

New Testament.

The Old Testament God created the physical world and was evil, while the New Testament

God created the spiritual world and was good.

Catharism had almost protofeminist beliefs, believing that gender wasn't a part of the

spiritual realm, and thus allowing women to preach and become part of the spiritual elite.

They gave special significance to Mary Magdalene, who in the Bible was the first to see the

newly arisen Christ and reported the news to the apostles, thus earning her the title

apostle to the apostles.

Pope Innocent III cracked down on the Cathars, calling for the Albigensian Crusade to wipe

them out.

It was called the Albigensian Crusade after the town Albi in the south of France, from

the Roman personal name Albius from a root meaning "white".

This word may have another tie in to our story in the word bigot, related in sense to the

word chauvinist, though the more common etymology has a different connection.

The usual theory about the origin of the word bigot, which had the earlier sense of "sanctimonious

person or religious hypocrite", is that it came from the Germanic expression bi God

"by God".

The story goes that in the 10th century the Viking Rollo of Normandy, upon receiving his

dukedom from King Charles the Simple of France, refused to kiss the king's foot, saying

"Nese, bi God!" or "No, by God!"

Thus the French derisively referred to the Normans as bigots.

In support of this theory of labelling a group by its favourite swear words, it's been

pointed out that in France during the time of Joan of Arc, the English were referred

to as goddams, and during WWI American soldiers in France were called les sommobiches, but

the story does still have an air of folk etymology to it.

Alternatively, in a less well-known but perhaps more plausible version, bigot might be an

abbreviation of albigot in reference to the Albigensian heresy, in other words the Cathars,

and the word does first appear in French at around that time in the south of France.

Now returning to more recent words for misogyny, though as we've seen the concepts it describes

aren't new, it's in the 20th century that people have noticed them enough to need new

words to label them, such as sexist and sexism.

These words are surprisingly recent, at least in their modern sense of gender-based discrimination,

and like male chauvinism have their origins in racial discrimination, again highlighting

the important connection between sexism and racism, and I suppose at least retroactively

demonstrating the importance of intersectional feminism.

Sexist was introduced into feminist discourse by Pauline M. Leet in a 1965 speech given

at Franklin and Marshall College, in which she explicitly proposed it as a term parallel

to racist.

The text of the speech was privately distributed among feminists, until sexism appeared in

print for the first time in Caroline Bird's 1968 book Born Female.

And that same year, possibly independently coined, the words sexism and sexist were used

in a pamphlet written by Sheldon Vanauken, again with the parallel with racism explicitly

made.

Vanauken recommended sexism and sexist as better terms than male chauvinism and chauvinist,

and in the end it looks like his advice was followed.

Of course the countering of sexism had its own terminology, and we can see a trajectory

similar to that of male chauvinism with the term women's liberation. The earlier term

had been feminism, which first appeared in the 19th century originally as a generic term

equivalent to femininity or in biological or medical senses, but soon enough feminism

and feminist were adopted by 19th century advocates for women's rights, and it should

be pointed out that feminism when used by feminists themselves doesn't meant hatred

of men or discrimination against men, but instead equality of all people.

After women's suffrage was achieved, these words went into decline, and in the 60's

and 70's feminists often preferred the term women's liberation (which had been around

since the end of the 19th century).

But soon enough women's liberation was adopted by their opponents in such formulations as

women's lib and libber, and by the mid 70s it too went out of fashion, with feminism

reemerging to fill the void.

And so from this historical and etymological trail we can see the foundations of misogyny

in modern western culture.

We see the battle for control over reproduction informed by Eve's punishment, not to mention

body shaming and calls for female modesty and dress codes that frame girls as an irresistible

temptation for boys, drawing them away from intellectual pursuits in schools.

Thus women are the target of slut shaming, and the word slut provides an informative

example.

A word of uncertain etymology, slut originally meant a "dirty or untidy woman" and still

can in some dialects.

It gradually gained more pejorative senses such as a "woman of low character" or

a "bold or impudent girl", but could also be used in a playful way without implying

serious criticism, much as we use the word scamp, originally meaning a "highway robber",

to refer affectionately to a mischievous boy.

But there's always a double standard, and by the 20th century the word slut developed

the disparaging sense of a sexually promiscuous woman.

And still today women are policed for their sexuality with this word, are sexualized in

the media, and are blamed for their own rapes.

And women continue to be thought of as a sexual commodity, as we can see so explicitly with

the rise of incels, short for 'involuntary celibates'.

The term, coined in 1993 by a college student known only as Alana to refer to a website

and mailing list that offered a support group for lonely people who felt marginalised by

things such as rigid gender norms, mental illness, or social awkwardness, has since

been co-opted by often violent and dangerous misogynistic men, calling themselves 'incels',

who are driven by their resentment at not having sex with women, and who call for "forced

sexual redistribution" of the "resource" that is women's bodies.

Ironic then that a word which originally just meant "unmarried" and was associated with

an opportunity for women to have reproductive choice should now be associated with the most

extreme form of misogynistic control—basically government enforced rape.

Now of course in this video I've only briefly summarised one strand of the story of misogyny,

which is a deep and complex phenomenon.

But hopefully looking at these etymologies and and their historical connections to philosophy

and religion can provide some fresh insight into this ever present problem.

So let me say in closing: don't be a dunce, reject this bald sexism, and don't be a

chauvinist.

You Are Loved: Messages on a Mirror (ft. TobyMac, John Crist & More!) - Duration: 11:13.

Hey girls! So I'm here backstage at the K-Love Fan Awards and we are about to

interview some of the different artists. And I have this awesome mirror over here.

It's a huge mirror and basically I'm asking each artist to write a word or

phrase on it: What they want you to know about how God sees you. So I'm asking

each of the artists that question and they're gonna write their answer in like

one word or one phrase on the mirror. So I can't wait to see what they all write!

So Tedashii, if you had a younger sister or a daughter, someone who was really

struggling with her self-worth, who didn't feel good enough, what would you

want to tell her? Yeah so I do have younger sisters. I grew up in a home with

all ladies. Oh wow! And yeah I was the only guy, and so I had the opportunity

often in life to to make somebody upset and also to love on them. So but if I had

something to say, man I would encourage people: Ladies, you are created in the

image of God. That very image is given to you so that you could reflect God's

goodness and glory. So that instantly gives you purpose and significance. With

that comes value. God values us enough to involve us in the things that He's

called us to do. And so worth, value, all of that, it's not just something that

people say. From God Himself, that's actually your birthright. And so I never

want people to forget the idea that God has given you your birthright of

significance, of value, and of worth. And so anytime you think less of yourself or

you feel down because you think other people think less of you, know that your

Creator in heaven, your Father in heaven, God Himself, sees your worth sees your

value, and He's intrinsically placed that in you because that's your birthright.

I would want to say that you are so valued. But not only are valued; you are so seen by God.

I feel like a lot of the time we struggle, especially in our walk with God, "God are

you seeing me? God are you seeing what I'm going through?

God are you seeing my gifts? God are you are you seeing me? Are you answering

my prayers?" And I just want to encourage you that you're so seen. You

are so seen. God sees every single moment, every sadness, every heartbreak.

The Bible says that He collects all your tears in a jar. And in those few years

that I really struggled with my calling and my identity and what I was going to

do, God just took everything out of me that was me and just filled it with

Him. And I cannot believe what He's done with my pain and heartache and

everything. And He was seeing me the whole time.

I would say the phrase: "Worth it."

Like a woman is worth it. Even in a

courtship way, like romantically, worth the effort, worth the respect, worthy of

honor. And then, you know, girls seeing themselves in that way where they

realize, "Are you trying to just take me to McDonald's? [Oh no you're not!] You better know

I'm worth it!" You know what I'm saying? Knowing your worth comes from God

exclusively. He has the exclusive copyright on your life. And always going back to

the Bible as the authority on who you are. You know guys and Instagram, all of

that, don't really have the right to tell you what you are - what you're worth.

Well I think you have to know that you're loved, you know?

I mean I have an adopted daughter, and she's 16. We adopted her at birth. And

I think like the most important thing to her is for her to know that she's loved

by her dad and she's loved by God. She's loved by her Heavenly Father and she's

loved by her daddy. So I make it a point every day when I wake her up and every night to tell her I love her.

And I think if you know you're loved, there's a lot of worth in that. So let me ask a followup question. For my girls who

don't have a dad who's been in the picture, how do they make that

connection to like seeing God as the Father who loves them when they've only

known rejection? I think to know God loves you, you have to listen to Him.

And the way you listen to God is by opening up the Word of God. There's so

much worth in that. The Father that created all calls himself your daddy and loves

you. I mean to me that's - that's more important than even an earthly dad.

The phrase that's coming to me is out of Psalm 139. It's just really been on my

heart lately. And the phrase is just "More than the sands of the sea." That's - that's

what His thoughts toward you are. It's not just all, "You're sweet yeah great

you're my daughter," no it's more than the sands of the sea. The way that He adores

you, the way that He thinks about you, the way that He spins wildly and sings over

you and dances over you, is more than the sands of the sea.

Well the neat thing about this is I do have an experience with this.

My daughter has dyslexia. She's just coming out of sixth grade, going into seventh.

She went from struggling earlier in her life to now she has all A's and one B.

Wow! And so she has worked hard and she has proved it to herself and one of the

things that did it for her, was she told people. She wrote it out: "This is how God

has made me. I'm okay with it" and all that. So like owning it. Yes owning it, and this is

this is- "Yeah I'm a little different, but this is how God made me."

I would say "You are enough." Mm, I love that. You are enough.

And that's something I've had to say to myself because there have been times where I felt like either I'm

too much [right, right], or maybe I should I say this? Maybe I shouldn't say this. And

you know it's like this battle where you go back and forth. And the Lord made us

just the way we should be. We don't have to anything extra,

we don't have to do anything less, all we have to be is who He made us to

be. You're enough. You know God made you on purpose for a purpose and He loves

you so much and He wants you to know that you do belong here on this earth.

That you're supposed to be here, that He has something so special for your life

and that is so unique as to why He made you that nobody else can do it. And

that's why you're needed and that's why you are here.

So I actually do have a daughter. I've got a ten-year-old named Hannah. And in a writer's room a

couple of years ago, I sat down with a guy named Benji Cowart, and Benji wrote a

song that a lot of people know called "Redeemed" by Big Daddy Weave. And so Benji

and I are sitting in this room and we were struggling going through different

ideas for songs, and finally I said, "Do you want to write a song that we hope we

never have to give to our daughters, but if they need it it's there?" Kind of a

break glass in case of emergency type song. And the opening line is:

Her arms are battlefields She draws the lines across to feel Like somehow she controls the pain

But deeper are the scars that run Through her broken heart

Scars you'll never see, she's so ashamed, but if she only knew how much He loves her

And how much He's for her And how His heart breaks every time that she thinks that He's not enough

It's so easy to forget. And it's boys too, it's everybody, we can forget because we can reason in

ourselves why - we can give all the reasons why the Lord would not love us.

But the thing is, He's already spoken enough through Calvary and through His just

complete passion for the world, the way He laid down his Son for our lives. It's - it's

something that we can always point back to the cross and realize that no matter the

times that we do forget, He hasn't forgotten us. He still loves us.

No woman - I believe this to be true - no woman would believe that she was worthless if

someone hadn't communicated that to her, right? You don't grow up -- you're like a princess, right?

You think you're amazing - yeah everybody does - but then somewhere along

the line, you hear from the outside. Either someone says you should - you

should be this thin or whatever it is. Yeah. And that's - I think it's more

like acknowledging and forgiving. I wrote "You be you." Oh I love that! I feel like I could

have written anything and you're like, "That's perfect." I would have said, "I like it. That's true. I would have."

I would just say, I really struggled with my self-worth for so long. I would say

know that God made you so unique, it's like there is no one like you.

And like what the game-changer was for me was Psalm 139. I'd never read it

before in eighth grade, and I was at my peak of insecureness, or whatever

And my pastor told me about that and I was like, "Wow!"

That's an amazing chapter of the Bible. It really is.

I would say, creation, you know. You are a unique creation. There's no one like you.

You're not alone in that struggle. You know, that's really important to know.

Two, of course there's so many voices in this world that are gonna try to tell you who

you are and what you're worth, but just know that that's not what it's about.

It's about who you are in here, and that so translates, you know? Now you

said you wrote a sister. Or, you wrote a sister! I wrote a sister! Impressive! You wrote a song for your little sister.

Yeah I did. My sister is 16 and I'm 18 so we're super close in

age, yeah. But watching her walk through challenges with accepting herself was so

difficult for me because all I could see was how beautiful and amazing she was. And that's all I

could see! And so I went to the studio one day and I wrote a song and it was

about telling her to remember who she is, who I see her asm who God sees her as,

who the people she loves see her as, which is what matters.

Remember who you are! Remember who you are, that's beautiful. Even on the bad days, remember who you are.

Girls I was just so blessed hearing whatall these artists had to say. This was just

like so beautiful. And just like all the things that they wrote, like they're all

different and they're unique and they're so true about who you are. So I just hope

that this can be an amazing encouragement and reminder to you wen

times get tough of who you are to Christ. So I love you girls and I'll see you soon. Bye.

show you how to do a soccer header.

Thank you Shanel.

So again, we have a setup here. Camilo is on

the right, he's going to cross it. Important here, you go for the ball you attack the

ball at all times okay. Also you need to the position of the body okay. You have to

be jumping on both legs, not only one leg, important. you have to land with both legs as well

really important to not getting injured. Okay, here we go.

[Soccer player practicing headers]

Okay guys, hope you liked this soccer video and really important here, you need to open

your eyes the whole time. Don't close your eyes okay use the

front of your head here okay. Pele mentioned it, Pele the Brazilian player, one of the

most important players in the history mentioned that you need to take the

ball like this in your hands and you need to look at it and hit it, hit it okay...

until your eyes are able to get used to the ball okay coming at you because

normally you're not used to it, objects are coming to you and you close

your eyes naturally. That's why you need to get a ball and just try to hit it

like that, like that and look at it okay and even faster and then practice with the

How to apply for a Visa while travelling the World? - Duration: 14:51.

Hello, welcome to our new video

We arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal a couple of days ago

We are in a hostel in the suburbs

Today we want to make a video about:

Visa!

In the last time we got this question a lot

How do we get our visa

Where and how etc. We want to answer that

Step 1, get informations

That depends on your citizenship

So, i'm german, Olga is russian

You need to check for

Which documents you need for the visa

Which timeframes are possible

You have to check how long you can stay there

How often you can enter a country per year

Which visa types are possible and which one you need

Then you shoul check how much it costs

How safe is the country

And then check if you really want to go there

Then check for special conditions

For example in Turkmenistan

You need a guide to get a tourist visa

So you book a tour and have a 24h guide

Or in Myanmar

You only get a visa

If you enter with a plane

And if you want to enter by land

For example from india, you don't get a visa

Yeah, it's quite complicated there

So it's very important...

To check for recent informations

Everything is changing all the time

So before you apply for a visa, check again

If something changed

And then you have to check, how and where...

You can apply for the visa

Step 2, Where do i get the infos

The best is directly at the ministry for foreign affairs

There are recent infos for all countries

The informations on the "save side"

If you need a visa or not

Or if you don't need a visa for a specified timeframe

Also about security in the country

Then...

Homepage of each country you want to go

Embassy and consulate

There you find which documents you need

How long the application may take

And how to apply

If you can't find infos there

You can contact them via email

Or call them

Most of the time you will get infos

And if you are in central asia

There is a great website, called caravanistan.com

There are up to date infos

Also reviews and articles from travellers

Who recently applied in the embassys

And how everything worked

How fast it was

Or why it didn't work

You'll find good inforamtions there

Links are in the describtion

German ministry of foreign affairs and caravanistan

Step 3, How and where to apply?

There are some possibilities

The easiest one, you don't need a visa

For example Georgia

I think it's one year without visa

Second possibility

Which is quite similar, you get a visa on arrival

But that comes with some conditions most of the time

For example

You maybe have to pay

You may need photos

At the border

And you may need to fill in some documents

Next possibility

An E-Visa

That's also quite comfortable

To apply for that

That's completly Online obiously

You normally fill some documents

With your data

Passport number etc.

Then you send it

Then you pay some money

To the government or something, i don't know

To the country

And then normally

In 1,2,3 days you have the visa in your email

Then you have to print it out

Then you go to the border

And then you get the real visa

Into you passport

Or just a normal stamp, yeah

That's always different

In Tajikistan and Azerbaijan we had E-Visa

That went without problems both times

Fourth possiblity

You apply at an embassy

This works most of the times like this:

You are in some country

And for example you want to go to a neighbour country

And for that one you need a visa

Then, in that country where you are

There is normally an embassy in the capital city

Of the country where you want to go

Then you go there

Normally the guys will know everything

They are used to do that

Do a short internet search for opening times

And if you need an appointment

But then you just go there with your documents

Which you researched before

Then you go there

Give them the documents

Answer some questions maybe

Maybe pay in cash

Or go to a bank and fill in a wiretransfer

And you also give them your passport

And then it's also always different

1 or 2 days, 1 week

2 weeks

Different in every country

But someday you can go back to the embassy

And collect your passport with your visa

Some countries offer a service

That you can apply in one embassy

And collect it in another one

In another country even

For Uzbekistan we did it, i applied in kyrgiztan

In the embassy of Uzbekistan

And in Tajikistan

In the emabssy of Uzbekistan i collected it

There was a 4 week timeframe in between

The application took two weeks and we didn't want to...

Wait two weeks in Kyrgiztan

So we wanted to collect it in Tajikistan, no problem!

The most comfortable, but also most expensive

Possibility is a visa agency

That means

You hand all your documents and your passport...

To a visa agency

So, a company which organizes everything for you

They make all the paperwork and go to the embassy

And then someday you can collect your passport

With the visa

If you are on the road it's a bit more complicated

You have to send the documents by mail

To germany

Or to your residental country

So we live in Germany

So we had a german visa agency. We did it two times

We HAD to do it!

It wasn't possible in another way

It was for Russia

I needed a visa

A normal tourist visa is only for 30 days

I wanted a 90 day visa

And you must apply for that in your homecountry

And we didn't want to fly to germany because of that

So we booked a visa agency

We filled all the documents

That was in Turkey

And all the documents and my passport

We gave to Olgas mum, who visited us

That was quite good

She took it with her to germany

And send it to the agency

They made everything, it took...

It's always different, i think 30 days

Until it was ready

The more you pay, the faster it is

You can choose a super-express-service

You pay 3x the normal price

I think the russian visa cost 200€

But yeah, it worked

And they send my passport to my parents in germany

That was good

And my parents send it to georgia

With an insured mail

To a friend of us

And there i could collect it

Actually it's not comfortable

I said that wrong at the beginning

Actually it costs a lot and it sucks

But it worked. We had no choice!

yeah

for some countries you must apply in your homecountry

And also good to know

If you don't plan to travel for too long

Or if you come back to you homecountry during the trip

Then you can apply for your visa in advance

In your homecountry

For example, if you plan to travel for one year

Then of course you also have to check for timeframes

And validity of the visa

How long i can wait to enter the country

But if i know for example

I travel one year and after 6 months i go to russia

Then i can get my russia visa in advance

And then i have it

In my passport, even before my travels start

And then i don't have the stress during my trip

That's also a very comfortable possibility

Step 4, what else do i have to look for

As we just said, with the visa agency

Send them the passport will only work if you have two

Because it's not allowed to stay in a country without a passport

Because of that...

In many countries it's possible

To have 2 passports. For example in Russia or Germany

It's very usefull in that case

Also if there are conflicts between some countries

For example

You can't enter iran after being in israel

And vice versa

Yeah, because of that we have...

Used one passport to travel in Israel and Jordan

And with the other we applied for the Iran visa

So the iranians didn't know we were in the evil Israel

In some countries

You have to registrate yourself

You can get problems otherwise when you want to leave

For example in Russia

Within 7 days

You need to registrate as a foreigner

At the post or the police

You have to research how to do it

Go with your passport, fill in documents

It's different in every country

But watch out for it, it was in Russia

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan

You have to registrate every 3 days in a hotel

In Azerbaijan after two weeks i think

The problem if you don't do it

When you want to leave the country you must pay fines

I think in Azerbaijan it's about 500€

Which you just have to pay

Or something like two weeks to jail

Yeah, that's not funny

You have to include this in your research

If you have to registrate

Do your research!

And now we can say what we payed for all the Visa

In the last two years of travelling

Drum roll!

How much we spent?

Almost 1400€

Yeah, not very less

Yeah, it's a bit!

We also were surprised when we checked the numbers

But yeah, for three visa

Russia for me and India for both of us

We used a Visa agency. I think that's 600€

And then.. i don't knwo how many visa we applied for

Maybe 10 countries i would guess

And it's between 50 or 70€

Then it sums up

That were our informations and experiences

With all the Visa stuff!

That's everything we went through

If there are more questions

Wrtite it in the comments

Leave a Thumbs up!

We'll see us next time

Ciao!

The Most Attractive Traits Men Really Notice - Duration: 5:21.

Dating is hard, and securing the very first date often comes down to either being in the

right place at the right time or having the right dating app.

Either way, it's undeniable that appearance can matter.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so it's difficult to really know what things men are

looking for in a woman.

But science has come through for us, revealing which traits men really find the most attractive,

and what's going to make you stand out in a crowd.

According to the book Falling in Love: Why

We Choose the Lovers We Choose, cross-cultural studies have shown a decided preference for

women who have big eyes, small noses, and full lips.

But if you don't have any standout features and consider yourself Average Anne, have no

fear.

While cultural standards of beauty are constantly shifting, our perception of what is attractive

is rooted in biology, not the media.

According to Harvard brain researcher Nancy Etcoff, people find "average features" the

most attractive.

One study mixed hundreds of photos to create a composite.

As more pictures were added to the composite, the woman became more attractive to men.

While it's often thought that bigger is better

when it comes to breasts, studies have found that this isn't actually the case.

It turns out that men are like Goldilocks when it comes to busts: They like them neither

too big nor too small.

Instead, women with the most attractive bodies are those who have medium sized bustlines.

A study from the 1960s had men rate 105 silhouettes.

Most of them ranked the ones with medium bust lines as more attractive than those with small

or large bust lines.

In spite of this, those same men still idealized women with larger chests, a find that was

backed up by later studies.

Thanks to a 2013 survey conducted by dating

website Zoosk, we have a lot of insight into what makes men tick at least when it comes

to hair.

Out of the men surveyed, 89 percent said that hair is the first thing they notice on a woman.

This find is particularly interesting since 71 percent of women surveyed said that they

don't expect potential love interests to even notice their hair.

According to the survey, most men prefer women to wear their hair down, and 29 percent said

that they want the "sock bun" hair trend to die out.

This backs up scientific findings, which have shown that men subconsciously look at hair

as an indicator of health.

Good hair provided an evolutionary advantage, and that preference still carries over today.

When it comes to body modification, men dig

it.

A survey conducted by AskMen.com and Huffington Post asked men what they thought about tattoos

and piercings on women.

Of the men surveyed, 69 percent said they would be attracted to a woman with a tattoo,

and 55 percent said they would be attracted to a woman with a piercing.

Men said that the most attractive tattoos are on the shoulder/upper back, while the

most attractive piercing by far, with 61 percent of the vote, is a belly button piercing.

"So cute, right?"

"Lovely."

But it wasn't just men who had their own tattoos and piercings who were into the idea of a

lady with them.

Only 32 percent of the surveyed men had tattoos, while only 13 percent had piercings.

When it comes to legs, it's all about the

length.

Studies show that men prefer women who have a longer leg-to-body ratio, which might explain

the popularity of high heels.

A study in Poland found that legs that are 5 percent longer than the average were the

most attractive.

But if you think the long leg preference means men like tall women, you'd be mistaken.

"Aah!

You're a monster!"

Despite the fact that there is an evolutionary advantage to being tall, men seem to prefer

shorter women, or at least prefer women who are shorter than they are.

So the most attractive women, according to research, are those who are short but have

long legs, like Scarlett Johansson and Marilyn Monroe.

It's not enough to have the right kind of

legs or be just the right height.

According to some studies, men want women to walk the walk, too.

A swinging gait reels men in.

"Boom.

Boom.

That's not it.

Yikes."

Researchers found that women who are most fertile have a tendency to subconsciously

change how they walk, slowing their gait in a way that men find more alluring.

This particular gait is similar to the way a model struts down the runway: head up, shoulders

back, arms swinging loosely with swiveling hips.

It's no great revelation that a winning smile

can attract a man, but women who are going to employ this tactic might be surprised to

learn that their smile has to be a big one.

Specifically, you need to bare those teeth.

Since teeth are the result of both genetics and environmental factors, getting a peek

into someone's mouth can give you an idea of their general health.

In women, this is linked to their reproductive value.

Healthy teeth indicate a healthy person who is capable of childbearing.

Small feet have been associated with femininity

and beauty for centuries.

The Chinese practice of foot binding endured for a thousand years before the practice was

outlawed.

While people don't go to such extremes for small feet in modern times, dainty feet are

still considered to be attractive.

Evolutionary scientists say men might subconsciously find small feet more attractive because they

indicate a healthy childhood.

Women who have had a healthy childhood don't reach puberty as early, and end up growing

for longer and developing more typically feminine features.

(ENG SUB)Finally I cansing BTOB song in karaoke?? BTOB - Only one for me MV reaction - Duration: 6:38.

Hello my subscribers. This is

Fail

This is GoToe

Today's idol is BTOB

They were back with their 11th mini album

'THIS IS US', title song Only one for me

This song is connected with their 2nd album

titls song ' Missing You'

When you think about this title

This song is about their mind to their lovers

Their feeling to catch her

I think lyrics are about that

Actually, BTOB is the only idol

that we called 'Ballad Idol'

and normally I enjoy dance songs

So I didn't listen ballad song a lot

So I am really excited when they released new song

When I heard their songs

I really thought many times that I can enjoy ballad song

We can talk more in detail after listening song

Mood and clothes are

Similar with Missing You

similar but more bright?

I think this is party place

Mood of 'Missing You' was really depressed

(Look at that rapping)

This song is more faster

and mood is better

Song is really nice

Song is really great...

Where is that?

On the see??? Wow

Is that.... in Korea???

Han River?????

I don't know I am not living in Seoul

Mood is much brighter than previous

really opposite mood

(Bright and energetic)

If I can not hold you, I will regret my whole life

I think here is in Korea

I think this is killing part

(Everyone can memorize this rhythm after listening 1 time)

(He looks happy cuz he can sing this song)

I think I can sing this song at karaoke

Normally BTOB songs are

really hard to sing in karaoke

But this song is... posiible I think

Normal image of BTOB is

they are really famous with their behavior like Biggle

Like that!!!!

exactly that face

Chang-Seop , Eun-Kwang

+Sung Jae

I really saw many times with that face

Sometimes I forgot they are balla idol

I think they are top idol

with the pleasantness

We saw their 11th mini album

title song Only one for me

The song is really perfect

they are always perfect

Mood of the MV is more light like party

and mood of the song is much bright

compared with 'Missing You'

It is really fit with this hot weather in Korea

When I heard their songs,

I always think 'Can I sing this song in Karaoke?'

Difficulty of Vocal part is not very hard in this time

I can sing this song after practicing

(Let's try)

This part is the highest part of this song

But this song is a little bit light mood

So Rap part is really hard

I can't memorize it cuz I only listened it 1 time

I think this part is so unique

I really hope I can sing this song

when I do IG or Fb streaming later

Especially when I do ths IG live,

many international fans request BTOB songs a lot

I think they are really famous internationally

Of course this title song is really good

and also there is a song named 'The feeling' in tracklist

Of course all the songs are so nice

But I really like this song

if you watching this video now

You need to listen 'The feeling'

Yes we saw 'Only one for me' of BTOB

Psicólogo ou Psiquiatra? - Duration: 4:13.

If you have a problem regarding your mental health

or if you are having some difficulties that affect different aspects of your life,

the best way to solve them is to seek the help of professionals.

But at this point a great doubt arises.

After all, should you look for a psychiatrist or a psychologist?

It´s true that both have the same object of study, which

in general terms are the human mind and mental health,

interested in analyzing from a scientific point of view,

the human brain, emotions, feelings and thoughts,

that is, how our brain works, how

we think, feel, and how we behave.

Both psychiatrists and psychologists are enabled to

make diagnoses and treatments of mental disorders,

helping us to understand, explain and change our behavior.

But the similarities end here,

even so because there are differences at different levels that distinguish these professionals:

at a academic level, for example, the differences are enormous. Psychologists are

professionals with a degree, with a Masters or PhD in Psychology.

According to their specialization and experience

we can find psychologists in different

areas, namely clinic, in the school area,

social and organizations area, among others.

On the other hand, psychiatrists have a degree in Medicine,

having subsequently achieved a specialization in Psychiatry.

The number of years of studies for these professionals

may vary slightly from one country to another.

A psychiatrist, for example, has at least 10 years

of training between academic and practical studies.

In Portugal, psychologists can only practice

their profession after being enrolled in the Portuguese

Psychologists' Association and for this it is necessary

to previously carry out a practical internship.

All this amounts to at least 6 years of studies and practice.

On a treatment level, we found significant differences:

although both professionals can practice psychotherapy,

this practice is much more common in psychologists.

While physicians, psychiatrists tend to view

mental disorders as biochemical changes in the brain.

Their studies contains classes related to pharmacology

and chemistry and therefore they can prescribe drugs,

and they tend as well to request tests and perform other

medical procedures, which is not the case with psychologists.

This is probably the most known and most

widely discussed distinction between psychologists and psychiatrists.

Treatment duration tends to be relatively longer

with psychotherapy, which aims to understand the causes of the problem.

Treatment with psychiatrists, on the other hand, tends to be shorter

and focuses, fundamentally, on the immediate reduction of symptoms.

If you are in doubt between consulting a psychologist or a psychiatrist,

keep in mind that your choice should be guided by the situation itself.

Psychological problems that result from brain changes, the

so-called endogenous diseases, more severe psychiatric problems

with severe symptoms and requiring medication,

must be accompanied by a psychiatrist.

We are speaking, for example, of a deep depression, Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

There are, however, some cases that benefit more from treatments

associated with psychotherapy, such as phobias, mourning situations,

the end of a relationship and countless other situations that generate great

discomfort and suffering that make us lose control

of our lives and affect our day -to-day life.

In these situations it is advisable to seek a psychologist.

However, this separation must not always be so evident.

The fact is that it is also possible for psychologists and

psychiatrists to work together on the same cases.

Teamwork allows not only better knowledge

about problems, but also more treatment alternatives.

In depressive settings, for example, the psychiatrist can be responsible

for drug treatment, helping to reduce symptoms,

and the psychologist through psychotherapy helps to understand beliefs,

cognitions, disruptive behaviors, and confront the problem itself.

It is true that psychologists and psychiatrists, although acting on

the same issues, do so in a very different way.

But they always have a common goal: to help

people with problems, to feel better.
