- I always wanted, always wanted as a kid and never got.
- Every year I didn't get one.
- Why didn't I ever get it, why?
- I don't know if it was a budget thing.
- I wrote to Santa, I went to the mall Santa.
- I don't know if it was a lesson.
- I understand kids want everything.
They see something on TV.
They're like I want that, I want that.
You get it for them as a parent, okay?
- There will always be that little bit in you
that wishes you did get that gift as a kid.
(lively music)
(electronic beat)
- This happened when I was almost eight,
that's 20 years of me remembering the fact
that I never got this Batman costume, okay?
All right, it was like a deluxe, like a kid deluxe.
That's what I mean, it was the first time I had ever seen
a child's costume with, like it was a hard plate.
You know, I didn't have an eight pack,
so if I put that plate on, I'm like now I do.
The chest, it even had like the little nipples,
like the, with the early 2002 Batman version.
You know what I mean, where they put the nipples on it?
And it had a full utility belt.
The mask too wasn't just like the flimsy fabric.
It was like an actual plastic, so it like, it was legit.
I walked into Walmart with my grandma,
and that was the first time I saw it,
and I felt a little confused at this point
because my grandma brought me to the toy aisle, you know?
Like, I didn't just wander there by myself.
She brought me there, I saw it, and then I was like,
"Oh my God, I love this, I want it,"
and then she told me no, and I just instantly cried.
I remember I laid on the ground
in Walmart, just like please.
(happy music)
You have gotta be kidding me now. Are you serious?
Oh my God, so I have to be so real right now.
The rest of this day, Fred Minnix is gonna be in this.
Quality. (laughing)
(fighting noises)
I'm Batman.
(electronic beat)
- A gift that I died for in the '90s
and I never got was the Rainbow art kit.
It is basically a big sponge.
The kit comes with a rainbow, the rainbow colors like this.
Each color would be perfectly on the sponge,
and all you had to do was go like this with the sponge,
and you had the perfect rainbow.
I remember specifically telling my mom
that I would give up my Easy Bake Oven rights
to my little cousin if I was to get this rainbow.
I really wanted it, I loved painting, and I never got it.
(happy music)
Oh my God, no way, oh my God.
This is epic. Um, can I try it now?
- [Gift Giver] Yes! - (laughing)
Wow, look at that! Oh, my God!
(electronic beat)
- A Game Boy is basically a handheld video game
that you can play on your own.
From the big, gray, boxy-looking one to the smaller versions
where you could put it in your pocket,
color screen, all the way to the Game Boy Advance,
I never received one.
About yea size, the game goes back.
You put like two AA or four AA batteries,
I don't know, I never had one.
The modern kids now would see a Game Boy
and just like what is that.
You basically have more than a Game Boy
now with your phones.
Yeah, all my friends had the Game Boy.
Oh, you're on level 64? Dude!
And I was just level zero, just I felt left out.
You know, I wanted one.
(happy music)
No way! (laughing) No way.
This means, oh my God, what am I gonna do with it,
But I'm 29 now, like did the ship sail?
Do they still make AA batteries?
You turn it on like that and then a little red light,
and then you just go, you just kinda exit the world
and enter this one right now.
I'm gonna have fun with this now.
(electronic beat)
- As a kid, I really, really, really wanted a Furby.
I thought they were so cute and so fun.
Furbys are little toys that are almost robotic.
They kind of look like a mixture
between a bird and a rodent almost
because I think they had fur on them,
and they had a little beak and two little eyes,
and then supposedly they learned to talk from you.
I told my parents how cool the Furbys were.
I would use my friends as an example and be like,
"Look, Jillian and Matt have Furbys, I should have a Furby."
But they just did not want to get me a Furby,
so I did not get a Furby for my eighth birthday either.
(happy music)
What! Aw, it's so cute, oh my gosh.
Year 2000 Furby? This is amazing!
- (chirping) Coco, coco.
- Is your name Coco?
- (speaking gibberish)
- Cool! - (speaking gibberish)
- Yeah definitely. - (speaking gibberish)
(laughing) - Okay.
You don't respond to things very well.
(electronic beat)
- I was obsessed with Sailor Moon. That was my TV show.
The dream was to be a Sailor Scout,
and if I could have a doll of her, it would be amazing.
My favorite Sailor Scout was Sailor Jupiter
because I liked the green, I like that she was tall
and had a ponytail, which was a big factor.
Sailor Jupiter would say something like,
"Jupiter thunder crash," and then just
lightning bolts fly. (lightning crashes)
So when you're from a small town in Australia,
the only way to get gifts like that
is to either go to a city and get it,
but I mean what parent is going to
fly you out to go get a toy.
(happy music)
(gasping) Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!
(laughing) No, no, no, no no.
This is so lame if I cry about this.
Where'd you get this?
(static electricity) Oh my gosh.
I just thank you so much.
This is so awesome. (thundering and lightning)
I don't know what I'm gonna do, if I should play with it
or keep it in the box at this point.
(electronic beat)
- The main thing that I wanted that I never got
was the Giga Pet, a digital pet
that you can put in your pocket, and it's a best friend
that you carry around with you in your pocket.
My best friend next door, she had one.
I brought her over, and I showed my parents.
I said, "This is it, this is what I want."
They were so cool.
I wanted to feed it, watch it grow,
you know, I needed that Giga Pet in my life.
I couldn't be cool without my Giga Pet,
and they deprived me of that.
(happy music)
Oh my goodness! How did you find this?
I could literally cry, oh my God. Is this real?
- [Gift Giver] (responds unintelligibly)
- Oh my gosh.
What, did you have to go to a vintage store or something.
I feel like a kid again. This is what I wanted.
And I never get gifts. (laughing)
- I'm so excited to show my parents
that I finally got this, and I can finally let it go
that after so much time they didn't get me one.
- I'm gonna put my life on a level of right here,
but with this costume, my life woulda been up here.
(gentle happy music)
- (laughing) Thank you.
- I don't cry, seriously.
- Hey, my name is Andreu. I finally got my Game Boy.
I'm gonna have fun with this.
(laughing)
(happy music)
