Top 10 Scrivener Tips - Duration: 7:33.
Even if you use Scrivener on a daily basis like I do, chances are there are features
that you forget about.
I've been using Scrivener for the last 10 years, and there are tips I wish I knew that
would have saved me a lot of time.
In this video I'm going to cover my top 10 power tips for Scrivener that will help
you too become a power user.
What's up, guys?
This is Michael La Ronn with Author Level Up, giving you the best tools and strategies
for writing faster and reaching readers with your stories.
Scrivener is an essential writing tool for writing faster, and if you use it to its full
potential, it will pay off for you.
Let's count down my top 10 tips for the program.
10 is Paste and Match Style.
Sometimes, you have to copy and paste text from sources outside Scrivener.
If the formatting doesn't match your project's, you will seriously mess up your formatting.
As you can see here, I am copying text from my Facebook page.
See how it looks when I paste it?
Pretty ugly.
My normal font is Palatino, but this one is different, with a different font size and
all.
But when I use the Paste and Match Style feature, Scrivener removes the copied fonts and styles
and pastes them into the document mimicking what you already have set in your project.
Let's paste that text again—much better.
It's not perfect, but you can see that Scrivener converted everything to plain text, which
is way better than what I had before.
9 is Snapshots Before you make major changes to a document,
do yourself a favor and save a snapshot . This will save a copy of that chapter if you ever
need it later on.
This is nice because it saves a version of the chapter for you without you having to
revert the entire project to an earlier version.
Very rarely have I ever needed to go back to a snapshot, but when I did, I was very,
very grateful for it.
8 is Split Screen.
Scrivener power users have learned how to master the split screen function.
You can get work done faster, especially in editing.
Split screen is your friend.
You can do it vertically or horizontally.
. If you combine this with the copyholder feature,
you can technically have up to 4 editor windows open at the same time.
You can do that by holding option and then dragging a document into the current editor
window.
7 is Collections.
Collections scare people for some reason.
But honestly, they're pretty easy and save you a lot of time in formatting.
Collections are a must if you are using Scrivener to format your books.
If you have multiple books in your Scrivener file, then Collections are also a must.
When you create a collection, you save yourself from having to manually add all the chapters
of your book later for formatting..
To create a collection, highlight all the chapters in your book, right click, and select
Create a Collection.
The collection will populate above the binder.
When you're ready to Compile, simply go to Compile and click the Filter button, and
select apply filter<Documents in Collection.
Scrivener will auto populate all the chapters of your book for export.
6 is creating your own project templates.
Why use the default Scrivener templates when you can use your own?
The easiest way to do this is to use Scrivener for a few weeks and figure out what your preferences
are.
Once you know what you want in all of your projects, create a new project, set it how
you want it, then go to File<Save As Template.
This will then show up in the Quick Start Screen any time you are ready to start a new
project.
Personally, I like to create stock documents for my outline, research, front and back matter
and have these populate every time I start a new project.
It saves time.
5 is Custom Metadata.
Metadata doesn't immediately make sense.
After all, it's not the metadata you're probably used to—the kind that tells Amazon,
Barnes & Noble and other book retailers what your book is about.
Scrivener's metadata is like that, but it helps tell YOU what each chapter is about.
For example, if you want to tag all of your chapters with your setting so you can sort
through it easier later, you can do that.
When you're editing and you realize that you need to change some details of say, your
spaceship setting, you can refer to your metadata in outline mode to help you find all the chapters
that have the spaceship in it.
The only limit to metadata is your imagination.
If you choose to use it and be consistent and thorough with adding keywords to your
chapters, this is a powerful tool.
4 is an anti-tip: don't use lists.
Scrivener doesn't handle them well.
It never has.
They don't convert well to other formats, they don't copy well, and they don't paste
well.
They're difficult to format in Scrivener, and usually cause spacing issues when your
lists get too big.
If you're writing a blogs or nonfiction book in particular, Scrivener's bullets
and numbered lists will cause you nothing but trouble.
I recommend you stay away from them.
3 is a keyboard shortcut.
CMD+1 to go to your document.
CMD+2 to go to the cork board.
CMD+3 to go to outline mode.
Simple and easy to remember.
2 is creating default formatting.
If you haven't done it already, do yourself a favor right now and STOP using the tab key.
Tabs make your book look awful when converted to ebook format, and many of the major ebook
retailers won't accept your book if you've formatted it with tabs.
The correct way to handle tabs is through automatic indents.
In any document in Scrivener, click CMD+R/CTRL+R to turn on the ruler.
Drag your cursor to 0.25 inches.
That's the equivalent of hitting the tab key.
This way, when you hit enter, it will automatically indent your paragraphs for you.
This one trick will save you hours and hours and hours of formatting.
Plus, it will fast track you to pass EPUB validation, which is a requirement for publishing
at most major online book retailers.
Trust me on this.
Create your automatic indent and then go to Format<Make Default for Project.
Go back and manually edit any documents that you used tab on prior to doing this, and commit
to eliminating the tab key from your muscle memory.
And the #1 Scrivener tip I can offer you is…
1 is Scrivener placeholders.
Did you know that Scrivener has its own syntax that you can use to tell it to insert certain
elements?
For example, let's say you want to insert an image into your text.
The WRONG way to do this is to copy an image directly into your editor.
Scrivener WILL display the image in your editor, and it WILL display it in your final ebook.
However, the size and resolution will be terrible.
The CORRECT way to do this is to insert your image into your binder by going to Import<File.
Keep your images in a separate folder, and name them something simple with one word.
Then, in the place where you want to display your image, use the Scrivener tag <$IMG> to
display the image exactly as you've formatted it.
Not only does this look better, it saves you file space because Scrivener doesn't have
to render your image every single time—it stores the 1 image and uses that every time.
This will make your books smaller, which at Amazon, makes a big difference and will save
you file delivery costs, thus making your more money!
For a full list of Scrivener tags, go to Help<List of All Placeholders.
I hope you found those tips helpful.
Scrivener is full of features and surprises, so don't forget to teach yourself a new
thing or two every once in a while.

HOW TO GET POPULAR ON YOUTUBE IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS !! (2018) - Duration: 16:56.
Yo what is up YouTube it's hustle D law here HDL or just hustle whatever you
want to call me is fine by me and today I decided to make a video on 5 simple
steps that'll help grow your YouTube channel cause I've had people ask me over
and over again like hustle hustle how you growing so quickly hustle hustle can
you please help me out please so I decided had to make a video because
you know all the small youtubers gotta stick together and I'm gonna break it
down for you coming right up
okay okay now before you all try to go ahead and
flame me in the comment section talking about hustle hustle hustle you don't
know what you talking about hustle you ain't shit you only got three hundred sixty subscribers
hustle like what why would I listen to you before you go ahead and do that just
hear me out I've only been making videos for about
two months now and I've reached three hundred and sixty
subscribers which you all have to admit that's pretty damn impressive like I've
seen channels that have been uploading for about a year two years three years I
mean we all seen it and they barely reach a hundred subscribers
haven't even scratched the surface and they just about given up on YouTube because
they are not following these five steps to grow your YouTube channels like these
really helped I know all the bit youtubers use it and I kind of put it on
practice like the results are there don't worry about the views quite yet
cause youtube doesn't really promote you until you get to a certain amount of
videos but these steps will help if you keep on doing them over and over again
so let's just go ahead and i'ma talk i'ma break down the steps that I'm gonna
talk about right here first we're gonna talk about do you upload consistently
and frequently that's very important obviously I mean if you don't then
you're pretty much screwed as it is so and number two do you have high quality
content people aren't sure what that means for some odd reason so I just thought
I put that on the list cause it's very important as well
all these steps are important honestly but each of them are important in their own
ways and you you don't have to do all of them but if you do is certainly a help
cause I know people that got lucky on YouTube not even doing any of these steps but
if you counting on luck you're not gonna make it very far number three are you
optimizing your content and your channel and are you being a pest yes I had to
put those two together because they kind of go hand in hand and I must tell y'all
what I mean on this later on as we get through the video the number four thing
we're gonna be talking about is are you being your real self not your fake self
and I know a lot of people that's fake in this YouTube community man if you're
not original then you're not gonna get very far either
so I'm gonna talk about that later and number five you gotta pick a niche or a
niche or however the hell you say that word I'm sorry I mispronounced some
words sometimes but a niche or nish a anyways pick a niche niche
that's relevant okay and you'll see what I mean on that later as well you can
also kind of pick two niches niches I can't fucking say this word bro but yes
you can kind of pick two but when you start off and you're small youtuber it's
always good to just stick with one that you do best that's relevant and i'ma go
more in depth on that later as well so without further ado let's get to the
meaty greedy of this video let's go
ohokay I want to start off with this topic because this is the most
self-explanatory one of the bunch basically when you become a youtuber
need to ask yourself these two questions how often should you upload and how frequently do you do
this shit well I know a lot of youtubers out there gonna tell you that
consistency is the key and that statement is a hundred percent facts
because if you don't upload consistently all your subscribers forget about yo ass
and move on to the next big youtuber because he's uploading consistently
consumers need to be fed more content daily because they are some greedy
little people when they bored they like looking at YouTube videos all day so
you need to keep those loyal subscribers happy by uploading consistent content so remember
plan your videos out a day before you upload because YouTube is stressful
as a motherfucker if you don't plan your shit out you need to write a
long-ass description on your videos so the YouTube algorithm will pick it up
either fucking make click baby as thumbnails
that's all prettied up so motherfuckers have no choice but to click on your
video in the promote your video everywhere on social media fucking reddit
YouTube Twitter Instagram all that shit we all got in fucking social media
that shit stressful as hell it really makes you want to hit yourself with a
cardboard box with a whole buncha tools in it but this video is here so you
don't burn yourself out and wanna quit YouTube so make sure you upload
consistently frequently while doing it efficiently so you don't burn yourself
out we all got jobs we all got girl friends and boyfriends we all got baby
mommas and baby daddys - but y'all probably got like five six seven we all get it
stressful as hell so just try to upload videos whenever you can you don't need
to upload three times a day five times a day
you can upload once a day once a week along as is consistent and it's frequent
frequently I fuck that word up I'm trying to talk to damn fast for you mother fuckers
but anyway on to the next step because this one's pretty self-explanatory you
dig
ohokay next topic is high quality content now remember boys and girls quality over
quantity now me my damn self I really don't know what high-quality content
means I mean are my videos high quality beats me that shit can mean many different
things I'm gonna tell you in my own words what I think it means okay number
one your audio do you have a good mic because if you are talking low people
can't hear you clearly all your screeching you will get flamed
so go out to a good enough Mic doesnt you need to be $20 he's good enough and make
sure you speaking clearly so people understand you don't want to get flame
now do you number two your video is it in 720p or 1080p cause if its any lower than that and you think you're hot shit and recording off your dads iphone 4
you will get flamed man upgrade your shit nobody want to throw your video in
the dumpster burn it fire because it's hot garbage they want to watch a
good high quality video so yeah upgrade your video all right step 3 are your videos
informational or are they of value cause if they not they will get lost in the
cause and you will get no views and you will get flamed so make sure your videos
have something of value in them don't be fuckin watching TV taking the video
yourself be posting on YouTube nobody wants to see that shit unless you funny or
entertaining because if you any of those things people will watch you do anything and
that bring us to the next step number four are you funny or entertaining the biggest
people on youtube if you notice one thing about them is that they're either
funny or entertaining and I'm not funny in the slightest sense of the word
people tell me I'm funny I don't believe that shit I ain't funny but I am damn
sure entertaing I keep people from start to finish
I keep people wanting to see more of me cuz I entertain them to no end everybody has
their own personality so if you're unique put your own flair
and entertaining people you should be Iight okay and that's pretty much this whole
step I mean the other thing you can do is optimize your content that's in the
next step that's also part of high quality in my own opinion
but we'll get they what we get here you dig it so on to the next step
oh ho ho okay the next topic we will be covering how to optimize your YouTube
videos and you also have to remember that YouTube is not a test so you gotta
be a pest man okay optimizing or SEO with stands for search
engine optimization I think I said that word right oh well it doesn't matter
but keywords is the main thing when it comes to optimize your YouTube channel
your title your description and your tags all need to match some way shape or
form dont be making your title about no cat then make your description bout a dog
then make your tags about some giraffe pussy because if you do that the YouTube
algorithm is not gonna rank your videos high at all and you probably will get flamed
and you don't get no views so make sure the title the description and the tags
has something about a cat in it you can rank higher at the end of your videos
make a planned call-to-action on each post tell people to comment something
that was very important your video now um let's see who do you think win in a
fight for Floyd Mayweather or Holly Holm tell them to comment that they are getting
your feedback do some high quality images in your thumbnails your YouTube
artwork channel everywhere your audio your microphone your videos are you
talking about that last topic this optimize that is for high quality is
somewhat make engaging headlines in other words clickbait
you can think about a clickbait titles I sure can clickbait is so easy people
hate it but it gives you your readers something that they want to click on
your viewers everybody they want to click on it because it's click bait
that's why they call it that and also make some relevant content that attract
all your users basically that countdown to your niche your niche here we go
again struggling with that word imma talk about that later and being a pest is my
favorite thing about youtube baby you need to basically keep on hounding
people to subscribe to your channel like I'm gonna do right now and you new to my
content be sure to LIKE the video comment and subscribe so you can join
the hustle empire see just like that easy as pie basically just keep on
hounding people all day every day 24/7 365 and if you have to
go on a big YouTube channel right watch their videos comment something relevant
than informative or funny if someone comments on it be sure to ask them if they
can subscribe to your channel all your Instagram followers all your YouTube subscribers
keep on telling people everywhere to subscribe your channel hey i dont if you gotta go to the
Streets tell them subscribe to your channel tell a hobo to go to best buy make
YouTube account and subscribe to your channel yeah keep on hounding to people
hound your family members hound everyone you can think of that's the only way going
grow because no one move promote your YouTube channel unless you do this yourself baby and that's all but you got talk about on this topic so all the next
on to the next you dig
yo I mean really really do I need to explain this topic feel real self not
your face so come on I think that is self-explanatory you
need be real not fake don't try to go on someone's YouTube channel try to steal
their name kind of steal all this video idea this thumbnail is this that and the
third cuz ain't gonna fly the YouTube community you know why cuz you will get
flamed for being a copycat just be yourself
cuz no one can do you better than yourself no one wants to go around watching the
same exact youtuber over and over again everyone likes watching different types
of personalities and if you're not getting subscribers in about two weeks
three weeks don't worry cuz it will pick up everyone advances at their own pace
everyone has the own different personality their own ideas so yeah you
your real self not fake so baby and you'll be alright on to the next topic you dig
oh-ho-ho-ho Hey the next topic is picking an niche nache nachine nit
bitch whatever this fucking word is bro that's relevant so I mean I don't know
you and you dont know me so I can't say I'm tell you what niche to pick
just list off the top niches in the youtube community if they help if your
girl the top thing to make niche on is makeup I mean what girl does not like makeup a
20-18 you know you're youtube will explode if you make a good video on makeup these days and
then there's gaming that's what I do theres food yoga Fitness unboxing products
tech reviews traveling who doesn't like traveling I sure enough like traveling
you can do fashion you can do sports you can do digital marketing you can do humor
make video on animals mens lifestyle photography how-to videos nutrition
music but be careful in music cuz you gotta make sure your shit is spitting
bars on the utmost quality cause if its not you he'll get trash
and yo mix tapes will get thrown in the fucking trashcan so be careful with that
you can do it on software hair care I mean there's a lot of niches out there
for you For For for the pickin I'm stuttering my
word they're my fault but yeah I guess I'm gonna just stick to gaming cuz if I
did a video on any of these other things my shit will be trash
plain and simple so I guess I can cut the video out right here so be sure to topple
on that like button topple in the comment section and topple on that subscribe button
and the notification bell so you can join the hustle empire if you enjoyed
this video and if you didn't then dislike the shit i dont give a fuck as long as you engaging with me so yea um we gone
