13 Genius IKEA Table Hacks - Duration: 8:26.
Despite its attractive pricing, IKEA furniture is mass-produced, which means it lacks originality
and character.
But there are ways to infuse IKEA pieces with some personality, and they're quite easy.
So here are 13 of our favorite IKEA table hacks that are sure to spice up your Lacks
and your Hemnes and your Latts.
1.
Faux Marble Nightstand.
Turn any IKEA side table into a chic nightstand in no time!
Believe it or not, the "marble" top is actually created by using adhesive marble-look
contact paper.
And the legs are glammed up by adding metallic spray paint.
2.
Colorful Kids' Table.
At $24.99 for the whole set, the Latt Children's Table from IKEA is a steal.
But that being said, it's also pretty boring.
3.
Striped End Table.
This project can be adapted for virtually any IKEA table – all it requires is some
tape, paint and a bit of patience to lay out the pattern evenly.
But what results is a glamorous metallic end table that would be perfect for the living
room.
4.
Barn Wood Table.
If you've ever spent any time at IKEA (or on their website, for that matter) you'll
probably know that the Lack end table costs a mere $13.99.
So it is the perfect table to use for a hack.
This barnwood hack gives the Lack a rustic, sophisticated look transforming it from basic
to beautiful in just a few easy steps.
5.
Nautical End Table.
Here is another easy project, perfect for anyone who likes a bit of a nautical or rustic
feel.
Just grab one of these and get to work.
The end result is a weathered and beautiful end table perfect for any room in the house.
6.
IKEA Closet Island Hack.
If you have a walk-in closet, this island might be the perfect project for you.
Use three of the Kallax shelving units (formerly part of the Expedit series) to create the
base storage section, and then add a slab of granite to create the top surface.
7.
Veneer Stenciled Lack.
This clever project utilizes bamboo wood veneer cut into flower shapes to create a graphic
look on a pair of Lack tables.
And if you're not into flowers, you could easily customize this one by using any shape
you'd like.
8.
Wood Slice End Table.
This gorgeous piece walks the line between modern and rustic and boy, is it pretty or
what!?
All you'll need for this easy IKEA hack is a Marius Stool (only $4.99) and a thick
slab of wood.
And the cool thing about this piece is that it could actually be used as a stool as well.
9.
Wooden Laptop Table.
This gorgeous rustic laptop table was made from the IKEA Vittsjo table, which comes with
a plain glass top but this one was customized using a wooden plank to cover the top surface.
10.
Lack Overlay.
This Lack table was embellished with a unique overlay, something that is becoming more and
more popular with IKEA enthusiasts of late.
11.
Table and Bench Combo.
the combination of two shelving units (one standing upright and one on its side) creates
the perfect little table and bench combination.
This was done in a child's room, but it could easily be used in an adult's bedroom
or even in the living room for some extra seating.
12.
Tall Lack.
Is the Lack the perfect solution for your bedside, only a bit too short?
Just combine two lacks and your problem is solved!
This will not only provide you with extra height, but also an additional shelf to for
storage.
13.
Mid Century Modern Buffet Table.
This buffet was created using the IKEA Besta, believe it or not!
The Mid Century Modern feel was achieved by adding a faux wooden exterior using adhesive
contact paper (again).
That's all for now.

Why the World's Smallest Country Has a Railroad - Duration: 4:52.
This video was made possible by Brilliant.
Start learning intuitively with Brilliant for
20% off by being of the first 424 people to sign up at brilliant.org/HAI.
So I hear you want to learn why the world's smallest country has a railroad.
Well, the Vatican has a railroad because the Roman Empire was awesome.
There's the answer.
Now I know what you're thinking—"you just gave me the answer why should I stick
around for the rest of the video?"
The Vatican, like Canada, is a pretty cool place.
It has the world's highest density of Popes, the world's highest wine consumption per
capita, and compared to me it's pretty huge.
Compared to other countries, though, it's on the smaller side.
It's about 3,000 feet wide and 2,500 feet tall.
If you took the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, and laid it on its side
over the Vatican you would be responsible for the death of thousands.
Despite its small size, the Vatican is a fully recognized and sovereign country with its
own government, its own banks, own stamps, own passports, postal system, radio station,
police officers, fire fighters, and, of course, railroad.
Being smack dab in the middle of Rome, it's not exactly hard to get to the Vatican.
There are no border controls between it and Italy so anyone can pretty much stroll into
the country without even realizing and there are also, of course, roads going in and out.
Now, considering the runway of the nearby Rome Fiumicino Airport is more than twice
as long as the Vatican is wide, there is no airport in the country.
This isn't all that unique.
Four other countries don't have airports—Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, and San Marino.
Now, it would't be unreasonable to think that the Vatican, the smallest country in
the world, also doesn't have a railroad because plenty of countries don't have railroads.
Libya, the 16th largest country in the world, does not have a foot of functional railroad
track but there are a lot of things Libya doesn't have… like a functional government.
Even some of the world's most highly developed nations like Qatar and Iceland lack trains.
I don't know if it's related but both countries have some interesting beliefs—Iceland
believes in Elves and Qatar believes in wealth disparity.
The Vatican though, has a railroad and quite fittingly, it's the smallest national railroad
in the world.
But why?
Now for the worst part of the video—the bit you actually learn stuff.
So, back during the Roman Empire Italy looked like this—it was all together.
But then the Roman Empire stopped existing which was a bummer unless you were Theoderic
the Great who ruled a united Italy under the Ostrogothic Kingdom until that fell and they
eventually became part of the Frankish empire, which frankly sucked, and so Italy fell apart
faster than a Kickstarter funded startup into a bunch of city-states as it remained for
the next 1000 years until people remembered how awesome the Roman Empire was and decided
that Italy should be united once again.
Everyone thought that was a great idea except the Pope who controlled this land—the Papal
States.
The new Kingdom of Italy disagreed with the Vatican's obviously irrational desire to
keep hold of the only territory they had so they took it and so the Pope wasn't happy.
For the next 60 years the different popes did not leave the presently unrecognized country
of the Vatican at all as a way to protest Italy's claim to Rome which is exactly the
level of stubbornness I admire.
That was until 1929 when the two parties signed the Lateran Treaty which said, "hey, we're
chill," in exchange for money, a recognized sovereign state, and a free railroad.
The Vatican rail line originates in Rome at a nearby rail station, curves off over a viaduct,
then enters the state through a 35 ton iron gate that's closed when there's no traffic
to keep Italy from invading by train which I guess was a concern?
Immediately on the other side of the wall is the Vatican City train station.
While this whole branch is run by the country, only about 200 feet of track are actually
within the Vatican which definitively makes this the smallest national railroad in the
world.
You could walk from one end of the line to the other faster than you could walk to the
moon.
This railroad has been occasionally used by Popes to get to the Papal summer palace south-east
of Rome, but nowadays its main purpose is to get food and supplies in and out of the
country without having to drive trucks through the crowded streets of Rome.
With the exception of a once-weekly train for tourists, there are no scheduled passenger
trains to the station.
If you become the next Pope and decide to extend the rail line to two or maybe even
three stations there are a lot of things you're going to need to learn like which bank angle
to use so that trains can go around curves without derailing, how much to adjust timetables
to account for slower running during repair work, and how to open the Vatican's secret
underworld housing the real Slim Shady.
Luckily, you can learn two of those three things in brilliant.org's classical mechanics
course.
This course, like all Brilliant courses, makes learning complex topics simple by first breaking
concepts down into their intuitive principles then combining those to build up to the answer.
It's seriously the best way to learn.
If classical mechanics isn't your thing, they have loads of other courses on topics
like probability, astronomy, machine learning, and my favorite, logic.
Best of all, you can try Brilliant for free by going to brilliant.org/HAI and then the
first 424 people to use that link will also get 20% off their annual premium subscription.

How To Make BIG Money From SMALL YouTube Channel | Dan Lok Menfluential 2018 Speech | RMRS - Duration: 13:29.
How to Make Big Money from a Small Audience with Dan Lok
[0:00:00] Antonio: So you want to have a huge impact.
You want to make big money, but you've got a small niche community that you're working
with.
Maybe it's a small YouTube channel you started up.
You've got a small email list.
Maybe you live in an area in which you just got access to a small group of people and
you're wondering, "Can I actually grow as big as I want to?"
Guys, in today's video, we talk about having a huge impact with small numbers.
In today's video, gents, I'm bringing you Dan Lok.
Dan Lok spoke in Atlanta at my Menfluential event and he rocked the stage.
He got up there and he specifically talked about "You can use a small audience to grow
actually very big, especially financially."
So guys, are you ready?
Let's get into it.
Dan: I view YouTube as a platform, what's it?
Audience: Platform.
Dan: Not a business.
It's a platform.
It's not a business.
I make some money in that sense, it's okay, but it's a platform.
It's a platform to get your message out there, to get your product out there, get your brand
out there, but it's not a business.
I don't care.
Even if you're making like substantial revenue from it, even 10,000 a month, it's not a business.
It's a platform.
It's nice but that's not a business.
So I want to start with that.
It's a platform, it's not a business.
Instagram is a...
Audience: Platform.
Dan: ...platform, it's not a business.
Facebook is a...
Audience: Platform.
Dan: ...platform, not a business.
Snapchat is a...
Audience: Platform.
Dan: ...platform, not a business.
Secret number two, monetize...
Audience: Now.
Dan: ...now, monetize...
Audience: Now.
Dan: ...not later.
That's what I talk about.
If you're not making money with this many subscribers, having more subscribers is not
going to solve the problem.
You're going to solve the problem if you're making decent amount of money with this amount
of subscribers, with your business model, then you say, "You know what?
If I can double or triple that, that makes sense."
Right?
But don't buy into the whole illusion.
No.
"Someday, if I get big enough, then the money will come."
My question to you, "What if it doesn't come?
Then you're f----d!"
Because you spend two, three, five years building that and you hope.
But it's like a lottery ticket.
"No, once I get to the half a million followers, everything will work out!"
My question is "What if it doesn't?"
Why don't we just make sure, okay.
We are making money all the way and if at the end, there's some big deal that happens,
some brand contact you, some big joint venture that you could do, "Great, but I'm not counting
on that.
If it happens, it happens.
If it doesn't happen, I'm cool."
Yes?
Audience: Yes.
Dan: Yeah.
Solve problems on profit.
You want to solve people's problems for profit.
And that's what entrepreneurs do.
We are problem-solvers.
We solve people's problem for profit.
You're not paid for your time.
You're not paid for the work that you do.
You're not paid for your content.
Unless you're very, very big that people are paying for you for endorsement deal assuming
most people, you're not paying for content.
What you are getting paid for is to solve problems.
People pay me to solve their problems.
It's that simple.
Clients -- here's the key.
People -- write this down -- they're not buying their way into something.
They're buying their way out of something.
Write it down.
Very key.
Let that sink in for a bit.
They're not buying their way into something.
They are buying their way out of something.
They have a problem, right?
They're investing.
They're spending money.
They want to buy this so they get out of this situation.
Think about that.
So think about all the problems that you can solve.
You got to think a little bit deeper.
So if you are teaching, "Oh, I'm teaching men's styling," okay, is that what you're
selling?
Audience: No.
Dan: What are you selling?
Audience: Self-esteem.
Dan: Self-esteem.
What else are you selling?
Audience: Confidence.
Audience: Confidence.
Dan: Confidence.
So they have higher self-esteem.
They're more confident.
So what?
So?
Audience: Make more money.
Dan: So they could...they could what?
Audience: Make more money.
Dan: They can make more money, be more successful, get laid, whatever.
What if it is?
The emotions, that's what you're selling.
You're not selling the styling.
So my question is, are you communicating that in your message?
Are you just saying, "Oh, here's a tie and suit.
This one looks good"?
Are you communicating what happens after you look good, after you do business with me?
Do you think a very clear picture of what that is?
And what happens if they don't take action?
Oh, the pain that they're going to experience?
You got to show them the hell, and you got to show them the heaven.
And your service and product is the bridge.
You show them the hell, you show them the heaven.
I'll say that again.
Your product and service is the bridge in between.
You're with me?
Audience: Yeah.
Dan: Yeah?
So here's a question I like to ask.
Does this group have a bleeding neck?
I like to solve bleeding neck problem.
Means it's not a nice-to-have, it is a must-have.
I like to sell must-have.
What if what I'm selling is a nice-to-have, I'd better we package and communicate in a
way that this is a must-have.
[0:05:03]
If you want to know what I'm talking about -- how many have done this before?
Late night, you're watching TV, you're watching some of these infomercials, right, and you're
like, "Oh, man, I'm like, maybe tired, nothing to do.
Kind of want to doze off, but let's see what's on TV."
You're watching this infomercial.
You're like, no, not thinking about buying at all.
Suddenly, some infomercial shows up.
Some magic knife, right?
And you don't even cook.
You're like, "What the hell is this knife thing?"
right?
And then you see the guy cutting the shoes with a knife, "Oh, this is pretty cool.
Maybe I need one of these.
Don't know for what, but I think I want one of these," right?
And suddenly, "Oh, okay."
You're not thinking even about buying these knives and then say, "No, but I don't know.
My wife will kill me if I buy this stuff.
No, I shouldn't buy that."
And suddenly, "But if you buy today, you don't get one knife.
You get two knives."
"Don't know what I'll use two knives for, but that sounds like a good idea."
It sounds like an awesome idea, right?
And then after that, "But wait, when you buy now, not two knives, you get three knives."
"Oh, wow.
Okay.
Three sounds a lot better than one," right?
And so it goes on, goes on.
Now you get ten knives for different purposes.
"Don't know what I'm going to use it for, but that sounds really good."
"And then if you act now, you get free shipping."
"Okay.
Let me dial this number right now and buy some knives."
Nice-to-have, suddenly, it's a must-have.
It's a must-have.
Are the prospects experiencing pain, urgency or irrational-passion?
One of those three alike.
Are they pain, urgency, or irrational-passion?
Are these solving the problem in a very accurate instant?
Do they have to have it solved?
Do they have to solve this problem now?
They cannot wait two months, three months, four months, six months.
Do they have the funds?
Do they have the money to pay for premium price?
I'm more for high ticket sales.
That's what I'm known for.
So can they pay a premium price?
How'd they like you to take action?
If they have to bleeding neck problem, they could afford it, yeah, of course, they will
take action.
So here's my clarity.
I don't do a lot of this anymore.
But when I was good at my YouTube channel, a lot of people were asking me about need
advice and consulting, so I set up this page.
So all these inquiries that come, "Hey, Dan, can you help me?"
"Can you consult with me?"
"Can you advise me?"
I just send them this link.
Three-thousand dollars an hour.
Yes, $3,000 an hour.
Yup.
And 99% of people would say, "What?"
Yeah, eliminate 99% of people and then I have 50, 60 people who would pay that.
Save me a lot of time because [0:07:50] [Indiscernible], separate them from the potential clients.
The "what" reaction is not me.
It's your reaction of value and time.
You're thinking, "Oh, 3,000.
Oh!"
Right?
That's normal reaction.
Pretty normal to me.
And that's my old rate.
That's not my rate right now.
So think about that.
Big problem.
So what is the big problem that you solve?
What's the big problem that you solve?
Who you sell to is as important as what you sell.
That's why I always believe -- write this down -- sell to p...
What?
Audience: Players with money.
Dan: ...players with money.
Sell to who?
Audience: Players with money.
Dan: Players with money.
Sell to players with money.
Don't sell to losers with no money, like, duh.
I'll be honest.
How am I going to sell to losers with no money?
Don't waste time.
Sell to players with money.
Your life will be a lot easier.
They will appreciate your work.
They'll appreciate your expertise.
They will appreciate your time.
They will spend money with you and they will say thank you.
Losers, no money.
You give them discount.
You go the extra mile.
You bend over backwards.
You give them a good deal and then after you do all of that and they say, what?
Audience: They still complain.
Dan: They still complain.
They still [0:09:10] [Audio Glitch] because that's who they are.
That's who they are.
Nothing to do with you.
That's who they are.
So don't spend your time with those people.
Spend your time with people, players with money.
Players with their money.
Secret number three.
Last secret and I'll wrap this up.
Think high-touch not high...
Audience: Tech.
Dan: ...tech.
Repeat after me.
Think high-touch not high-tech.
So we have all the technologies and social media, but at the end of the day, let me tell
you this, business is about what?
Audience: People.
Dan: People.
Business is about people.
It's about this connection.
It's this, it's this.
This is good, but this is just simply a way for you to reach out and get attention.
But at the end it's this.
When you see someone like this, when you see someone like this, they get to know you.
They feel you.
Very, very different.
It's not just, "Oh, here's the photo.
That's good."
Get the attention but you want to get to this.
And sometimes, if we cannot get to face to face is the best, if we cannot do that, the
phone.
I make all my money from the telephone.
All my money from the telephone.
Get them on the phone.
Let me show you how.
[0:10:16]
So we're done with YouTube business, we're done with the [0:10:18] [Indiscernible] business,
we are in the...
Audience: People business.
Dan: We're in the what?
Audience: People business.
Dan: People business.
We're in the people business.
Never, ever, ever forget that.
It's people doing business with people.
People paying you money.
So example, just very quickly, I'll go through it.
So it's a funnel that I have.
People will go to the website, [0:10:38] [Indiscernible], potential clients, they download a free PDF.
Very simple?
In this case, this funnel is on how to do webinar.
After they watch my videos, they consume my content.
Yes?
Then at the end of the content, say, "Hey, you know what?
Throw an application, proper time."
From there, I'm converting attention into leads.
After they fill the application form, my team would go on the phone with them.
How's that?
I offer them a service.
"Oh, come on, Dan.
It cannot be that simple."
It is that simple.
"Oh, come on.
It's got to be more complicated than that."
You know what?
You know why do people want to make it so complicated?
Audience: [0:11:24] [Indiscernible] when they fail, they could blame no one.
Dan: Perfect.
He said, "When they fail, so they could blame themselves."
"Oh, it's too complicated.
I can't do this."
All the revenue I generate, it's one way or the other.
Free stuff, video, or webinar, telephone, that's how I make millions of dollars in all
these verticals.
While other people are thinking how complex it is, good.
I like simple.
Write this down.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Antonio: What do you think?
Pretty good information, right?
But you know what impressed me more than the information Dan talked about?
It was the transformation that I saw in his students.
Fifteen of his students showed up there in Atlanta.
I got to talk with them in person.
They're like, "I went through his high-ticket closer program and I absolutely loved it.
It was life-changing.
I am using that information to make an extra thousand dollars a week."
Guys, it's amazing.
When you can pick up a skillset, you realize, "I'm not beholden to just one stream of income.
I can start to bring in my own money and I can put myself in a stronger position."
And that's what I love about what Dan teaches.
Guys, if you want to learn more about Dan's program, go to realmenrealcloser.com.
I'm going to link it down in the description of this video.
And if that's not enough, gents, you want to take this to the next level, come out to
Atlanta, Georgia.
Meet me and tons of other great guys at Menfluential.
This, right here, is the premiere of that in the men's lifestyle space.
So if you want to get to know influencers like Aaron Marino, Jose over Teaching Men's
Fashion, Raphael over at the Gentleman's Gazette, or Thomas over at Thomas Frank, you will find
that these guys are there.
They're available.
They are my friends because I brought them in and I want you to get to know them, to
be able to shake their hands, to be able to tell them, "You've had an impact on me" and
to find out how you can take that information and become the man you know yourself to be.
That's it, guys.
Take care.
I'll see you in the next video.

What Magic Johnson Did After Son EJ Came Out To Him - Duration: 1:58.
It looks like it took some time for Magic Johnson to fully accept his son's sexuality.
Back in 2013, Rich Kids of Beverly Hills alum EJ Johnson came out at gay.
Since then, Magic has publicly expressed his support for his son, and even shared some
advice for parents of LGBTQ children during a 2017 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
He emphasized the importance of loving children for who they truly are, and shared,
"When my son came out, I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents.
We love him.
EJ is amazing."
But according to a June 2018 Red Table Talk show interview with EJ and his mother, Cookie
Johnson, the process of coming out to Magic wasn't quite so simple.
In fact, Cookie describes EJ's initial conversation with Magic as, quote, "a little tough."
Cookie explained that she'd asked her son about his sexual orientation before they decided
to tell the 58-year-old basketball legend together.
Magic's initial reaction, according to her, was to immediately blurt out whatever came
to his mind.
"He was saying 'This is not what I wanted for my son.
And do you realize what you're saying because the world is not going to like that."
Cookie claimed that afterwards, she told Magic that the way he reacted was, quote, "not right,"
and that Magic didn't say anything else after that.
According to EJ, he and his dad shared a heartfelt conversation the following day, during which
Magic said,
"'We're going to get through this and I just need time.'
And we both kinda started crying a little bit."
The EJNYC star later moved across the country to attend college in New York, which gave
Magic the time he needed, and helped the father-son duo reach a turning point in their relationship.
Upon EJ's return home, Magic had come to accept his son for who he is.
"He hugged me so hard.
He almost like broke my back.
At that point, I was like, 'We're going to be ok.'"

That Weird Ace Woman: Max's Planets Tag - Duration: 16:16.
*electronica beat*
*punk music in background*
Hello, everyone!
You can call me Amaranthe, and welcome to the fifth installment of That Weird Ace Woman:
the planets tag!
Yeah, okay, it's not directly related to asexuality, but my wonderful sib from another
crib, Max, originated this tag and then tagged me in it.
So I'm doing it.
As far as stuff that's related directly to asexuality, I do have a gray-asexuality
and ace spectrum video in the works—I think it may need some more research—and I also
am planning on another fun video soon.
And then maybe a really depressing one.
I-I want to build up the fun before we get to really depressing.
But for now, the planets tag!
This video is going to involve me going through a list of prompts that Max set up based on
the astrological meanings of the planets.
And these meanings did not come from Max, nor did they come from me; they came from
a Web site called Astrostyle, so if you take issue with any of the meanings of the planets
used, please don't pollute either of our comments sections.
Now, when Max did this tag, they talked about TV shows, but since I don't really focus
on any one particular medium, I'm going to be talking about books, TV shows, music,
movies, whatever, as long as I think it answers the question.
Because it's my channel and I can do that if I want.
If that's not what you came to this channel for and you're not interested, I totally
understand.
So without further ado, let's get to the planets!
Mercury, the meaning of which is mind and communication.
So the prompt for Mercury is something that really made you think; something that
required a lot of focus for you to engage with.
And, you know, follow what was happening.
Oh, man…Anathem by Neal Stephenson.
Definitely that book.
Amathem, when you open it, the first thing you see is a level of invented language not
seen since A Clockwork Orange.
So in order to keep up with the plot, you have to keep track of all these different
new vocabulary words.
Also, this author?
He loves his infodumps.
And he will often infodump something that becomes very important later.
So I was constantly flipping back to earlier in the book to reread an infodump so I could
understand what was going on.
I was going back to make sure I hadn't missed something or reread stuff with that book more
than with any other book I've read.
It was absolutely worth it, but Anathem?
*sigh* That was an EFFORT.
Next up is Venus, the meaning of which is love and attraction, so something that you're
either really drawn to or makes your shipper heart soar.
That's a tie.
That's going to have to be a tie between Into the Drowning Deep by Seanan McGuire writing
as Mira Grant and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
Now, the reason Into the Drowning Deep makes my shipper heart soar is because, well, it's
a thriller about killer mermaids, and when Mira Grant writes, ANYONE CAN DIE.
And there are these two characters who are both queer who I thought would be so cute
together.
And I was actually pretty sure they were flirting, even though I'm really terrible at telling what
flirting is.
And I really wanted them to get together, but because it was a thriller, and because
of Bury Your Gays, I was sure that one or both of them was going to die.
But then they both survived, and the relationship became canon!
It was canon!
They survived!
And they were together!
And it was adorable!
And it was amazing! *whispering* Seanan McGuire slash Mira Grant writes good representation.
Go read all her stuff.
The adorable queer couple that I would love to see in SVU is Alex Cabot and Olivia Benson,
because Olivia has dated so many guys throughout the course of the show, and it never works
out, and she needs to realize that she should just be with former ADA Alexandra Cabot already.
Especially in season 19 episode 19…Alex and Olivia have this lingering embrace, and
I was practically screaming at my screen, "KISS ALREADY!"
Also, in terms of something I'm drawn to?
*wistful sigh* Olivia Benson's perfect cheekbones.
Next up is Mars, the meaning of which is drive and energy, so the prompt for Mars is something
that makes you want to, you know, DO THE THINGS.
For Mars, I'm going to pick Who Fears Death, a book by Nnedi Okorafor.
I'm going with Who Fears Death because the main character, Onyesonwu, is, well, she's
an unusual protagonist in a lot of ways, especially her hair-trigger temper, but particularly
the fact that she doesn't always know what she's doing.
Onyesonwu is a sorcerer, and she has to leave the town where she's been training before
her training is completed because of plot reasons.
So she has to rely on instinct a lot of the time when she's using her sorcerer powers,
and her instincts are sometimes wrong and they're often not very good, and in terms
of the story, her love interest, Mwita, often serves the purpose of going "Ugh, Onye,
I love you, but you can be a ding-dong".
You might wonder why that's inspiring or motivating, and it's because, to me, it
sends the message that it's okay to go out and try to accomplish your goals and go on
an epic quest even if you're not fully trained and sure what exactly you're doing.
I mean, I feel like that's particularly motivational for twenty-somethings.
Next up is Jupiter: luck, growth, and wisdom.
So the prompt for Jupiter is something that really warped your mind or made you think
about your life.
Only two pieces of media have ever really strongly done that to me.
Both of them are books, and one is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle and the other
is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.
With The Handmaid's Tale, we finally get to talking about asexuality, aside from me
not knowing what flirting is.
The Handmaid's Tale…oof.
At the time that I read the story, I believed that, as an asexual woman, I would be forced
by the pressures of society to marry and have sex with a man.
So some of Offred's experiences rang way too true to me.
This is really depressing.
Let's move on.
A Wrinkle in Time messed with me in a less disturbing way.
I was a very precocious child, like Charles Wallace, and when Charles Wallace fell into
the clutches of IT, I was freaked out.
I thought that meant that I would, too, fall into the clutches of evil unless I changed
something really important about myself and became more like Meg and less like Charles
Wallace.
No, I haven't seen the new A Wrinkle in Time movie—even though I really want to—and,
ah, no, I have not seen The Handmaid's Tale TV show because I'm not doing that to myself.
Let's move on to Saturn: discipline, growth, and challenges.
Now, the question for Saturn is: "What is something that made you challenge yourself?"
Something that you thought would be too hard for you or too complicated, something that
you thought you wouldn't be interested in, or, in my case, something I thought would
have too much sex in it.
Now, my repulsion tends to fluctuate depending on the situation; however, one way in which
it's very consistent is that if I'm surprised by sexual content, the repulsion goes
through the roof.
And this may seem counterintuitive—and I really don't know how to explain it—but
this is especially true for something I'm reading as opposed to something I'm watching.
Now, I can't think of a book with more surprise and/or excessive sex…that I actually got
through…than Deathless by Catherynne Valente.
Her adult books have WAY too much sex in them.
Yes, that's an opinion.
You don't have to leave a comment on that.
Please don't.
Sex scenes between two people I kind of get, but at one point in this book, the main character
has to ride Baba Yaga's mortar and pestle, and she has to hump the pestle to make it
go. *record scratch, background music stops* I almost through the book across the room.
But it was a library book.
*music resumes* I actually got through the book because the story was interesting, especially because
I really love mythology, and this book was heavily inspired by Russian mythology, so
I…*deep breath*…got through it.
And honorable mention for Saturn goes to the J-rock band BAND-MAID because all of their
songs are in Japanese, and I don't usually listen to non-English music…except for melodic
metal…like Arkona…but anyway, they're just that good.
I love them.
Even though I can't understand a word they're singing when it's in Japanese.
So props, BAND-MAID.
Next up is Uranus: change and originality.
So the question for Uranus is: "What is something that you found really fresh and
unique, and that you hadn't encountered before?"
I'm going to have to go with the TV show Bojack Horseman for this because I've never
seen the idea of humanoid and/or sapient animals done exactly like they did it with Bojack
Horseman.
And this is especially due to the inclusion of the episode "Chickens" because in a
lot of media featuring sapient animals, such as Zootopia or Sing, the story either points
out that the animals should be eating each other, such as in Zootopia, or it just glosses
over it, like in Sing.
Ugh, Sing…don't watch Sing.
But in Bojack Horseman, not only do they address it, they address it in such a way that makes
it clear that there are animals that are capable of sapient thought that are bred to be eaten.
That's messed up!
That's messed up.
But it's original!
Also, Bojack Horseman had something I'd only seen once done well prior to me watching
the show.
Sing along if you know the words: canon asexual main character!
Next up is Neptune: dreams and healing.
So the prompt for Neptune is: "What is your dream TV show?"
Or book, or film, or what have you.
In my case it would have to be a dream series of books: the Wayward Children series by Seanan
McGuire.
And, yes, it is because—and now you definitely know the words—canon asexual main character!
Also, the Wayward Children series is a portal fantasy, and…oh, the worlds that Seanan
McGuire created for the series…OHHH, they're so interesting!
And they're so creative!
And they're so brilliant!
And…augh, Seanan, why are you so talented!?
I don't know why I'm so late to the game with portal fantasy, but man does that idea
make me want to write ALL OF THE FANFICTION.
The Wayward Children series even inspired me to start writing my own portal fantasy.
So I guess technically I could have discussed this series for the Mars prompt, since it
inspired me, but if I listed all the books, movies, TV shows, and musicals that inspired
my writing, we'd be here all day.
Honorable mention goes to Steven Universe, especially if that show ends up having a canon
ace character.
And the last planet is Pluto, and yes, I am aware Pluto has been demoted to planetoid
status.
Just go with it, please.
So for Pluto, the meaning of which is power and transformation, the prompt is: "What
is something that empowers you?"
*quietly thinks* I'm just going to play it.
*punk song plays* It's their fight to lose/I'm a modern anarchist/A punk rock existentialist/
Who wants to make the whole world feminist
That was the song "Womanarchist" by the AMAZING riot grrrl group Bad Cop/Bad Cop.
They're so good, you guys.
Honorable mention goes to the book Bloodline by Claudia Gray,
which is a Star Wars expanded universe book.
And it is just unadulterated Leia awesomeness and I love it.
You may have noticed that I skipped Earth, and that's because Max did the same thing;
they discussed Earth after Pluto, so I shall do the same.
Earth, as much as I'd rather live on Deep Space 9 or the Enterprise-D, is home.
So the question for Earth is: "What is your comfort TV show?"
Or book, or movie, or what have you.
I'll be discussing several because I couldn't pick.
I was recently introduced to the concept of the chicken soup movie, which is a movie that
you're pretty much always up for, but is especially comforting when you're feeling
gross.
And I like this expression despite not really liking chicken soup; I'm more of a tomato
basil person.
I would have to say my chicken soup movie—or tomato basil movie, if you will—is Wreck-It Ralph, and I'm
not even sure why.
I think it's the association I have with it, because I really got into that movie when I was in
grad school, and when I was feeling really stressed—because…grad school—I would
whip up a huge batch of edible cookie dough and sit down with Wreck-It Ralph and just
de-stress.
Also Star Trek: Next Gen because I like to have it on while I'm working.
And another show I like to have on while I'm working is actually SVU because I've seen
it SOOOOO much, and, you know, have the opening narration tattooed basically tattooed on my
brain at this point, so it doesn't require a lot of my attention.
Except for occasionally to look over and admire Olivia Benson's flawless bone structure.
And even though…Orson Scum Cad…*jaunty music* Ender's Game.
The book.
I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the movie.
Harrison Ford…Abigail Breslin…why?
I actually had a brief hospital stay when I was in college, and the one book I brought
with me?
Ender's Game.
And Max also included the sun and the moon, so I shall as well.
The sun is one's basic personality, so the question for the sun is something that is
just intensely YOU.
This is another tie.
I'm going to have to say Star Trek: Voyager, not because the entire show is really me, but because
I over-identify SO MUCH with Seven of Nine.
We have similar difficulties with social skills, we both like to sing, and we both belong with
Captain Kathryn Janeway.
I mean…Chakotay?
Really, showrunners?
Really?
Also, I've got to go with Steven Universe because GAY, I really like the music, martial
arts, and science fiction.
Next up is the moon—mood and emotions—so something that really made you feel the feels.
*deep breath* Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Don't at me.
Yes, this is in part due to Luke and Leia's touching reunion, but if I described every
moment in The Last Jedi that punched me in the feels, we'd be here all day, so let's
move on.
Also, I'm going to have to throw in an honorable mention here to The Legend of Korra, specifically
the moment in season 1 where Lin Beifong sacrificed her bending to protect Korra.
I actually went to a Tae Kwon Do class a couple hours after that episode aired, and my students
could tell I was upset.
They asked me if I was okay, and my response was essentially *whimper*.
So, that was it.
The planets tag.
That was fun.
I am super new to YouTube and I don't really know how the etiquette of tagging people in
these things works, so, you know what, if you saw this video and you thought it'd be fun,
go ahead and give it a shot.
Please like, share, and subscribe if you so choose, and please consider helping me out
on Patreon, because I'm super new to this and my only equipment is a Nikon Coolpix and
iMovie, so…I could use a little help.
Thanks for watching!
Bye!
*electronica beat*
Into the Drowning Deep, which…wait, hang on…I didn't plan that.
I'm just sitting next to my bookshelf.
And Law and Order: SVU because unfortunately there's not an adorable canon queer relationshi--
wait, there is.
Fin's son and his…husband.
So I'm not, you know, like Charles Wallace.
Aaaah!
A Wrinkle in Time messed with me in a much less disturbing way, because *computer chimes*
Now, my repulsion tends to fluctuate depending on the situation…fluctuate…I don't know
why I felt the need to do this.
Canon asexual main character!
Why am I doing this!
*truly godawful, vaguely European accent* Canon asexual main character!
Why am I doing Italian and Russ—what's wrong with me today!?
Since Earth is…holy *bleep*, that's bleeding a lot.
My leg is bleeding.
That's not good.
And also Steven Universe because GAY, it has really good music, sci-fi, and I forgot.
