Waching daily Sep 12 2017

What happens when you combine a weird history of makeup, World War II, and the threat of Communism?

...Well....oddly enough you end up with an employer based health insurance system.

Now I know I can't stop you from engaging in the polite civil debate YouTube comments

are known for, but arguing about the current state of our healthcare system isn't really

what this episode is about.

Instead, we're going to focus on how the US healthcare system emerged due to a strange

set of historical circumstances.

Now, in the US almost 50% of people with health insurance are covered through their employers.

But considering jobs don't pay for other vital expenses like car insurance, utilities,

or Amazon prime, it's worth asking, why do they provide health care at all?

Well to understand the history of employer based healthcare we have to understand what

medicine was like about 100 years ago.

Spoiler Alert: it was messed up.

Before the 20th century most people couldn't afford a doctor and that might have been a

good thing.

Doctors were doing all sorts of kooky procedures like inserting goat glands into patients' bodies

Or displaying premature babies in incubators at Coney Island freak shows.

Plus people usually went to the hospital to die rather than get better.

So most Americans didn't really worry about health insurance.

Fast forward to the early 20th century and medicine is actually getting good.

There's vaccinations, antibiotics, and better training in medical schools so doctors weren't

just hacking people up.

Now people actually want to go to the doctor.

Only problem (as always) is that real treatment costs real money.

But even as late as the 1920s most hospitals still had lots of empty beds, because in spite

of improved outcomes for patients, people couldn't pay.

What was the solution?

Makeup.

Okay, stay with me.

An official at Baylor University hospital noticed Americans were paying more on average

for cosmetics than healthcare.

That gave him a major light bulb moment when he said:

"We spend a dollar or so at a time for cosmetics and do not notice the high cost…yet it would

take about 20 years to set aside [money for] a large hospital bill."

This was a big development because then Baylor started selling plans to Dallas public school

teachers at work.

The teachers started paying for health insurance the same way people pay for makeup:

in small increments.

The plans became really popular and Blue Cross was born.

As a result health insurance started making headway in America.

But this brings us to our next question, why did the employer based system became so widespread

in the US?

It's odd because by 1920, 16 European nations had adopted some kind of national, compulsory healthcare.

Why didn't the US follow suit?

Well, because the more things change the more they stay the same.

In 1933 Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Democrats pushed for a national health care system

as part of his social security legislation.

But Republicans, with the help of the American Medical Association, were able to shoot it

down by calling it "socialism"

and arguing that a health care program was "government overreach."

Basically, if your grandparents and great grandparents had facebook, they would have

had the exact same arguments as you.

Okay.

But in order to understand how employers got involved in the health insurance game we have

to dive into two of history's most exciting subjects: WW2 and tax breaks.

Now, while Hollywood mainly makes movies about the battles, running a war is actually very

difficult and logistically complex.

And during World War II, the federal government was fighting Nazis and their own fear of post-war inflation.

And rightfully so.

The administration saw what happened when hyperinflation wreaked havoc on the German

economy after World War I.

So they were determined to hold it at bay through wage and price controls.

This of course, did not make workers very happy.

In reaction to the wage controls, many labor groups threatened to strike, which could have

been devastating to, ya know, winning the war.

So in a concession to unions, the War Labor Board exempted employer-paid health benefits

from wage controls and income tax.

Plus, the government offered big tax breaks for providing coverage.

As a result employers started offering health plans to attract new employees, unions didn't

strike and by the end of the war, health coverage had tripled (source)

So because history loves irony and unintended consequences, it was FDR and Labor Unions

who played a big part in generating the modern employer based healthcare system.

But what does Communism have to do with this?

Well post world war II, employer based health insurance, wasn't guaranteed.

President Truman pushed hard for a nationalized health care system, but was defeated by Republicans

with a big assist from Communism!

But first, a quick post war recap.

In Great Britain, devastations from bombings during WW2 led to a post war political consensus

and the formation of the National Health Service.

The fact that average citizens were hurt during the bombings in the UK, played a big role

in pushing this agenda forward.

In the US, this wasn't the case.

Other than the attack on Pearl Harbor, American soil remained almost entirely unscathed and

most non-Veterans were physically okay.

So rather than dealing with a devastated populace, American politicians were trying to bring

war time taxes under control and size up it's next enemy: Communist Russia.

In 1945, when Truman proposed his 5 points (source) for better national health, including

national health insurance, the threat of communism was used to defeat it.

Remember the American Medical Association?

Yeah it still wasn't too keen on universal healthcare.

The AMA used the "red scare" to convince the public and congress that Truman's plan

was "socialized medicine".

They called the administration "followers of the Moscow party line", which, despite

sounding like a line dance, was actually a pretty strong condemnation of Truman.

Of course Truman didn't appreciate being called a communist and used the

"Christian Values" argument against the AMA saying: "I put it to you, it is un-American to visit

the sick, aid the afflicted or comfort the dying?

I thought that was simple Christianity."

But ultimately, Truman's efforts for universal healthcare failed.

After that defeat, the Korean War took hold, and the 1950's boom economy lead to

greater employer based health insurance and America got more set in it's healthcare system

So what do we get when we add this all up?

Well, things that we rationalize as normal often need a lot of historical turns to arrive

at that same point.

Without a combination of creative marketing, the complex economic regulations of WW2, and

a post war boom economy mixed with the the threat of communism American health insurance

could have ended up in a very different place.

Oh and, remember that thing about displaying premature babies in incubators at Coney Island

freak shows.

Yeah, that one actually worked and paved the way for neonatal health care.

History's a weird place.

So what do you think?

Have any thoughts about the early history of American healthcare?

Have any evidence about something we may have missed?

Let us know down in the comments and we'll see you next week.

Last week we talked about the origin of Killer Clowns.

Let's see what you had to say

Several people asked, why we decided to start with medieval jesters rather than starting further back?

That's a really great question

In history, the point that you start at is just as important as the set of questions you ask.

For example, in Columbus' narrative, we usually start with 1492.

As opposed to say the day Queen Isabella became the queen of Spain or the day Columbus was born.

Becasue we've decided that that might be the best point to start for the argument we're making.

But if you have another starting point that goes further back to think about to say early mythology and trickster characters

or other European histories of clowns, drop them in the comments and let's talk about it.

Paul Hallinan Miller, an actual clown,

posted a really cool TedX talk he did about how clowns subvert authority.

Which is cool, cause I'm not a clown in that sense.

So we'll link it down in the description.

A couple people asked about where the idea of the Sad Clown has come from ?

Ronald Poe the 4th came in with a great answer on Facebook, that Smokey Robinson wrote "The

Tears of a Clown" based on an 1892 Italian play about a clown named Pagliaccci , who performed happy,

but was sad and cried in private.

Oddly enough for our episode, Pagliacci also actually murdered his wife during a performance.

Good lord, clowns are creepy.

So thankfully for all of you who are terrified of clowns, that's enough on that subject and we'll see you next week.

Batter up!

Hey man, that's enough.

Ohhhhh I'm not done!

Say hello, to my little gun.

That's fighting dirty. You don't need to do that.

My brain's like this fucking big, lady.

Heroes & Generals. 1.08 Planes and Ladders Update review. Обзор обновления - Duration: 6:20.

Hey everyone! Here is a quick 1.08 "Planes and Ladders" update review

Once again an update mostly relates planes and once again 3 new planes are added.

This time they are 1st tier fighters:

German Messerschmitt Bf 109D-1,

American Seversky P-35A

and Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3.

In general these planes are armed much worse than 2nd tier fighters

Soviet and American planes have machine guns

and German one has a machine gun and 20 mm nose cannon with low ammunition stock.

Nothing interesting, just more vehicles "just for collection".

Price is 96k credits or 1150 gold.

P-40 Warhawks vehicle versus vehicle damage is slightly buffed.

It should make P-40 more competitive within its tier.

Changed ground handling of all planes. Finally I can drive on roads good enough.

Or I cant...

And some more planes changes - sound adjusting, some changes for planes models, smoke particle systems optimization and so on.

Simply put all that you never notice.

Added impact sound for vehicles when it collides an obstacle or a player.

Oops, not this one.

Semi-Automatic rifles sounds are changed one more time to be more different from each other.

Just a little.

A veeeeery little.

Do you hear the difference? I do not too.

After a long time leaderboards have returned! Now in a different form

now there are various leaderboards with a lot of categories.

It contains statistics from the past 30 days, so to be a leader you have to confirm your leadership constantly.

Statistics refresh every hour.

And these are all the most important points of the update. What do we see here?

Planes over and over and over again. What is more they are pretty useless.

I start thinking that the game is turning into flight simulator.

The rating of the update is ...

2 bearded RedBjarnes out of 10.

Thanks that they have broken nothing at the least.

Although in this I'm not sure.

Why The New Lara Croft Looks So Familiar - Duration: 7:15.

In early 2017, Tomb Raider fans everywhere got their first look at Swedish actress Alicia

Vikander as the series' iconic hero Lara Croft in the upcoming film franchise reboot.

But while Tomb Raider is Vikander's latest big budget action role, the star has been

all over the place in the last decade, moving from Swedish indie darling to A-list celebrity.

Here's a look at why the new Lara Croft looks so familiar.

Pure

One of the first films to land Alicia Vikander some international recognition was 2009's

Swedish drama Pure.

Directed by Lisa Langseth, the film stands out as a real masterpiece of Swedish cinema,

landing Vikander 'Best Actress in a Leading Role' honors at the Swedish version of the

Academy Awards and launching her on the path to superstardom.

A Royal Affair

Vikander followed up her breakthrough performance in Pure with a supporting role opposite Mads

Mikkelsen in the 2012 historical drama A Royal Affair.

The critically acclaimed film earned 'Best Foreign Language Film' nominations at both

the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Which is ironic considering Danish was actually a foreign language for Vikander as well.

She told the Independent,

"I had to call my friend's mother, who is half-Danish.

She actually recorded all of the lines (in Danish) on her iPhone and sent them to me

so I was able to practice on my own."

Anna Karenina

Vikander's debut in English-language cinema came in Joe Wright's 2012 film adaptation

of Leo Tolstoy's famous novel Anna Karenina.

Filming the Russian classic was quite an adventure itself.

Vikander told The Guardian,

"It was 40 below, we didn't have hot water for five days and slept in a cabin, on a bench.

On our call sheets it actually said: 'Beware of wolves.

They are known to attack lone humans.'

We saw a wolf one time, and a bear, but there were some very tough Russian security guys

who came along … It was one of the most fantastic adventures I've ever had in my life.

But I don't need to do it twice."

The Fifth Estate

Vikander's English-language acting career started gathering steam in 2013, when she

landed a supporting role in Bill Condon's WikiLeaks thriller The Fifth Estate opposite

Benedict Cumberbatch.

She told GQ,

"I knew a lot about WikiLeaks already.

One of the most famous documentaries about it came out in Sweden before the war logs

were released, and Julian Assange was still considered a very brave man."

Hotell

2013 also saw Alicia Vikander star in the Swedish drama film Hotell, in which she plays

Erika, a mother struggling with postnatal depression who finds comfort in hotel rooms.

Vikander found herself attracted to the script because she enjoys playing uncomfortable roles—and

because she'd already worked with the film's director, Lisa Langseth, on Pure.

She told Refinery29,

"I was really drawn to the script.

Many women go through [postnatal depression] if they have a family, but it's still a very

taboo subject; I've never really seen it portrayed onscreen.

I mean, I didn't even really know how it would work just by reading the script…

I was quite amazed at how Lisa was able to bring it all to the screen."

Ex Machina

2014 would prove to be a very big year for Alicia Vikander, due in no small part to her

attention-getting turn in Alex Garland's Ex Machina.

In the sci-fi psychological thriller, Vikander played Ava, a beautiful and dangerous robot

powered by artificial intelligence—a role that landed her a slew of award nominations.

Vikander was happy for the change of pace, telling IndieWire,

"I just love those intimate, psychological sci-fi films.

Then this script came along and it's one of the best scripts I've read.

Normally you come in and work on a script and Alex was very open to us to change it,

but it was just a very finished product.

It's a page-turner."

Testament of Youth

Vikander's stunning performance in Ex Machina was followed by her portrayal of writer Vera

Brittain in James Kent's film adaptation of her World War One memoir, Testament of Youth.

In an interview with Collider, Vikander discussed the difficulties of playing a real-life character.

"You want to… especially give justice to her family and friends who actually still

live and who remember her, who knew her.

That was probably the most nerve-wracking thing to meet them in person and do that.

But they were so nice and they were really there to support."

Son of a Gun

Alicia Vikander's third film in 2014 was Julius Avery's Australian crime thriller Son of a

Gun.

Vikander told IndieWire she was hooked from the first page.

"When I read the script it had such pace, and then it turns into a heist thriller, so

I was very intrigued to see how this director, who I thought was a very arthouse director,

would do something like that."

Seventh Son

Sergei Bodrov's fantasy adventure film Seventh Son was the fourth high-profile release featuring

Alicia Vikander to hit theaters in 2014, but it was actually one of her very first gigs,

having been filmed several years earlier.

Vikander told GoPride.com,

"This is how studios work with releasing movies.

It was a big experience for me because it was the first American film that I got."

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

In 2015, Vikander made the jump to blockbusters with Guy Ritchie's re-imagining of the hit

'60s television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Having appeared primarily in indie or lower-budget films, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a new experience

for Vikander.

She told Vulture,

"I mean, they closed down the Spanish Steps in Rome.

I was like, 'Are you kidding?'

I couldn't believe it!

But that's what you're able to do when you have those budgets, and it was a huge gift

to be able to experience that.

I could walk out on the street and feel like I'd time-traveled, with 200 extras and all

the shop frames changed to look like the '60s."

The Danish Girl

In 2015, Vikander took on what would become her most famous role to date, as Danish painter

Gerda Wegener in Tom Hooper's film adaptation of David Ebershoff's transgender novel The

Danish Girl.

Vikander won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, but while she was happy with the

win, she didn't think it was really a big deal.

She told Vogue,

"I think that it's all just buzz, and if people recognize the film and talk about the film,

then maybe that will bring audiences to see our film.

It's an important story to tell, so that's all we want."

Burnt

Rounding out 2015, Vikander appeared in the John Wells cooking drama Burnt, in which she

appears in a very brief role as Bradley Cooper's ex-girlfriend.

The film was a commercial and critical disappointment, so maybe next time the producers will do the

smart thing and give Vikander more screen time!

Jason Bourne

2016 saw Alicia Vikander continue her rise to mainstream stardom with her portrayal of

CIA Cyber Ops Division head Heather Lee in the fifth installment of the Bourne series,

Jason Bourne.

It was a dream come true for Vikander, who has long been a fan of the franchise.

She told The Independent,

"I was a teenager when I saw the first film…

Even if it is a popcorn franchise movie, it's intriguing because it has elements of political

and social issues that you recognize and yet is still very entertaining."

The Light Between Oceans

After playing a department head at the CIA, Vikander returned to period fare, starring

in the 2016 romantic drama The Light Between Oceans.

Vikander's onscreen romance with co-star Michael Fassbender immediately led to popular speculation

that they were having an offscreen romance, although neither actor would confirm the rumors.

Since filming The Light Between Oceans, though, the pair's private romance has been a hot

topic for tabloids, turning the stars into Hollywood's newest 'it' couple.

Tulip Fever

In 2017, Vikander returned to period drama in Tulip Fever.

The movie was actually filmed back in 2014, though, and as you might expect, the long

delay was due to the fact that the film apparently just isn't very good.

Still, with a full docket of high-profile releases on the horizon, including that Tomb

Raider reboot, we've only seen the start of what promises to be a long and fascinating

film career.

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo | Animated Book Review - Duration: 2:26.

Over the years, You've probably read countless books and articles on decluttering, getting

organized, and living a more minimalist life.

They've all helped in some way, but just like crash diets don't lead to lasting weight

loss.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is a different kind of self-help book.

Here are 5 things why:

One.

Why can't I keep my house in order?

You'll learn that you're better off tidying in one fell swoop rather than tidying up a

little and then rebounding.

A complete decluttering session, rather than sorting and storing things halfway, is needed

to change your mindset.

Two.

Finish discarding first.

Do a complete purge of everything you own, evaluating each on the basis of whether it

sparks joy for you or not.

You have a relationship with every object you own, but if you don't need some of them

in your life anymore, you can thank them for their service and get rid of them guilt free.

Three.

Tidying by category works like magic.

Instead of tidying by one room at a time, Kondo advises we tackle clutter by category

instead, in the following order: clothes, books, papers, miscellany, and then things

with sentimental value.

Four.

Storing your things to make your life shine.

This section is about storing the stuff you do decide to keep with respect, in the best

way to see and appreciate them.

Lifehacker readers will probably be familiar with the advice to "file" your clothes.

Five.

The magic of tidying dramatically transforms your life.

The goal is to be surrounded only by the things you love (or need) and to be inspired by your

possessions rather than stressed out by them.

Marie Kondo's book can help you in many ways.

The one thing you'll hopefully get from this book is a desire to get rid of the things

that don't make you happy.

INLINE SKATING HACK // MAKE YOU MAKE INLINE SKATES COMFORTABLE //VLOG 154 - Duration: 4:38.

I'm going to show you how you can make all of your skates comfortable wait 12euros

Olá Youtube, my name is Ricardo lino and I'm a wheel addict today I'm going

to show you how you can make all of your skates comfortable wait 12 euros 13

dollars something like that well these is what you need these are

the my feet nail foodies and from what I know there's four different ones these

are the low-cut two millimeters other than the low-cut two millimeters you

also have a higher version of this which is the high cut and both of these come

in two and three millimeters I think that's it and depending on the thickness

if it's the two millimeters it's around 12 euros or 13 euros and the other ones

are 4 euros more why is this so amazing well if you if you like skating for like

long periods of time or if you want to make like a marathon and if you haven't

been skating like long distances these will prevent blisters does that make

sense to you a lot of people say yeah but if the skate is comfortable you want

to have blisters well it's not really like that because when you skate for

long periods of time what happens is that you start losing the position that

you wish if it was and then sometimes started leaning too much on the on the

inner edge or something like that because if you're not used that's going

to happen basically or sometimes the socks on the inside they just they get

old like the socks get like wavy can you say that and then because of that you

get blisters well if you have these should prevent those blisters other than

that why is this that good also I know that a new you also does one and a new

one has a little protection on the side and that might be better for you if

you're looking for protection like for like your ankle the other one has a

little thing on the side kinda like a plastic shield here and then it's

covered with neoprene it's also amazing and I used to use those these ones

they're like the stitching is all flat it's like I know if you can see it here

but it's flat stitching so on the inside it

won't leave any marks it feels just like a big piece of sick skin because it's

now praying your feet is going to be warmer and if you're going to to do a

different type of skating that you need your feet to handle impact sometimes I

think cold feet is the main reason why I get injured so these can help you for

that and if you're not one of those people that do like a proper warmup

I don't do it a lot of times either which is I'm being a bad example but

yeah these things can help you with that why would you want to take one or a slim

one a lot of people ask me hey my liner is not supportive enough what do you

think I should do like or my foot is not thick enough well if these extremely

meters three millimeters on each side means that your foot would be six

millimeters wider inside the liner and that makes already a little bit of a

difference also when you have these on is they're tight you're gonna fit a lot

more support in your ankle of course if you're trying to put your foot in a

speed skate you might want to get something like slimmer so you don't lose

that much power transfer which of course also happens because this is soft and if

you have like a super thick one you can also lose a little bit of power transfer

it's I think it's going to be a really really tiny bit and if you like a real

professional skater that really need the full power transfer you want need these

because most of the times they skate sockless basically they skate the skates

without any socks so that's that and other than that I wish I was using that

today because today I'm doing a 24-hour skate challenge basically I'm using my

roller skate for 24 hours and these would help me a lot but I could use them

because I'm making this video for you so if you enjoyed this video don't forget

to subscribe to the channel and give me some thumbs up if you didn't like it

give me thumbs down but let me know what you didn't like about this video what

did I do wrong if you're subscribing to the channel but

you're not getting notifications there's a little bell on the side that you

should click and then you'll get an email or any other type of notifications

whenever I apply video and most important than anything

else let's just not forget why we all started skating because it's fun cheers

guys see you tomorrow with my 24 hours challenge

When you hear the word water, what do you think?

Cool, refreshing, cleansing, purifying - these are just a few of the words you could use.

Seeing a body of water in the middle of summer makes you want to jump and splurge.

And on winter, well, you wish it was summer.

With Earth made up of 71% water, you would never run out of chances to take a dive.

But careful now, inviting as they may, not all bodies of water are safe for your bodies

to be in.

Some are hotter than a cup of coffee or are so radioactive it could kill you in an hour.

This video will make you think twice the next time you come across a body of water.

So sit back, relax, and take note, lest you want any of these 5 most dangerous waters

in the world to kill you.

5 - Boiling Lake, Dominica

Bubbling at around 90 degrees Celsius, the aptly named Boiling Lake of Dominica is an

object of curiosity among locals and visitors of this Caribbean nation - so much so that

they take the time to leave the island's majestic beaches, and hike about 4 hours just to get

to this site.

The lake, which was first sighted in 1870, at least according to records - is actually

a fumarole, or an opening in the Earth's crust that emits steam and gases, and is often found

near volcanic surfaces.

In this case, it is located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a tropical forest of

significant volcanic activity.

The 7,000-hectare land is home to five volcanoes, at least 50 fumaroles, and over a dozen hot

springs.

But the boiling lake is definitely the main attraction, with its bluish-gray water continuously

bubbling, heated by the hot steam and gases coming from the molten lava underneath.

Its surface is often clouded by vapor, adding mystique to the already curious sight.

It is the second largest hot lake in the world, measuring 76 meters across, with temperatures

ranging from 82 to 92 degrees Celsius around the edges.

It is, of course, hotter at the center, where the lake is actively boiling, but it's too

treacherous to measure there.

You might be wondering, it is neither the largest nor the hottest lake in the world,

so what makes it so dangerous?

The boiling lake gets its water from rainfall and two small streams that drain into the

area.

Its water level is continuously fluctuating, and so is its temperature.

Seismologists have actually recorded these instances seven times since it was discovered.

The most notable of which is the following - in 1880, a phreatic eruption almost drained

it out, leaving only a fountain of hot water and steam.

In 2004 to 2005, its water levels dramatically lowered by 10 meters, a huge amount that the

lake was able to recover in just a single day.

In 2016, the water's temperature became cold enough for tourists to be able to swim in

the lake, an incident that prompted authorities to block the premises from tourists and locals

alike.

The lower water level and higher temperature could be disarming to those visiting this

lake and could seduce them to take a dip after a long hike.

But scientists say that during these instances, steam explosions often occur, and the lake

emits gases like carbon dioxide, which could be very harmful to the body.

Most of all, the lake could go back its normal boiling state with little to no warning, and

the unknowing tourist could end up being boiled to death.

4 – Potomac River, USA

With a generally tranquil facade, the Potomac River Gorge is among the most deceptive bodies

of water on Earth.

Located just outside the United States Capitol Washington DC, it is the destination of many

wanting a reprieve from the summer heat or those craving for an accessible adventure.

Through the years, the Gorge, a 14-mile stretch of the Potomac River, has become a famous

spot for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and boating.

Despite the endless warnings, visitors often forget that beneath the calm surface is current

so strong, it could pull you down.

So strong in fact, that a few unknowing tourists who innocently stepped on its shallow depths,

were carried away by the currents, only to be seen a few days or weeks later, already

lifeless.

The Potomac River Gorge is said to claim an average of seven lives per year.

Interestingly, it is not even the vicious whitewater that makes the river so deadly,

but the seemingly calm waters.

Rescuers say that on the surface, the water may just be moving at 10 knots.

But five feet below, it could be as much as 35 knots – so that when you go down, chances

are you won't be able to get back up.

With the river's bottom covered by boulders and trees, and the Great Falls plunging 76

feet before speeding up at the narrow walls of Mather Gorge, the effect is deadly to inexperienced

tourists who only went to the Potomac to enjoy the nice summer day with family and friends.

Of course, authorities have already issued dozens of warnings, with several signs scattered

around the area.

But with the water looking so beautiful and calm, who would believe them?

3 – Jacob's Well, USA

With a depth of about 40 meters, Jacob's Well seduces swimmers and divers – from

innocent kids to professionals – for a plunge, may that be a quick dip or a dive through

its underwater caverns.

Located in central Texas, its irresistible allure has already claimed the lives of at

least eight divers.

Yet children are still often seen swimming in its mouth, even taking a dive from nearby

boulders.

Jacob's Well is an artesian spring, which gets its water from the Trinity Aquifer, and

spills it to the surrounding Cypress Creek.

With a mouth of 4 meters in diameter, it descends some 40 feet before angling down through a

succession of chambers.

It is Texas' largest underwater cave, reaching depths of at least 120 meters.

This, of course, is the well's most seductive feature, the death rate only adding to the

curiosity of divers who want to discover its mysteries.

A piece called The Fatal Allure of Jacob's Well says the openings to its 4 chambers are

too narrow, forcing divers to remove their tanks to be able to enter.

Once inside, the puzzling layout of the caverns confuses divers, making them unable to identify

the right way up.

Those too inexperienced for the adventure just ran out of oxygen trying to get out.

2 - Lake Karachay, Russia

A radiation of 600 roentgens is more than enough to kill any human, and that much concentration

once existed in the majestic Lake Karachay in Russia's Chelyabinsk region.

Its coral blue water is so inviting you would want to take a leap, if you don't know what

it contains.

It's a beauty that is much better seen than touched.

Scientists say Lake Karachay is among the most polluted places on Earth and swimming

in it would cause your life.

Of course it did not contaminate itself on its own.

It's all thanks to the Russian government, who used the lake as the dumpsite for one

of its biggest and leakiest nuclear facilities, the Mayak Production Association.

The facility was built in utmost secrecy in the 1940s, in Russia's bid to catch up with

the Western world's weapon technology.

For 45 years, Mayak did not even appear on any map, hidden from the rest of the world,

even the residents of nearby villages.

Constructed in a great hurry, the facility had no regard for safety, and suffered several

meltdowns that prompted it to release its radioactive wastes to Lake Karachay, where

Russian authorities believed they would be buried indefinitely.

But 10 years later, a drought struck the region, dried up the lake, exposed the radioactive

elements underneath, and spread toxic dusts as far as 900 square miles.

Needless to say, it was very harmful to the residents living around the area.

But with the facility supposedly non-existent, doctors were forced to say that the region

was infected with a 'special disease.'

It was only in 1992, when then Russian President Boris Yeltsin finally acknowledged the nuclear

facility's existence.

But by that time, the damage has been done.

Cancer cases around the region has already increased by 21 per cent, birth defects by

24 per cent, and leukemia cases by 41 per cent.

At the time of its discovery, scientists say an hour on the banks of the lake would have

killed any human being.

Today, a load of concrete covers Lake Karachay, in a bid to prevent radioactive sediments

from contaminating the banks.

Researchers say it is safe to stand on its shore now.

But, would you?

1 - Lake Kivu, Africa

300 cubic kilometers of carbon and 60 cubic kilometers of methane – that's basically

a ticking bomb lying beneath the surface of Lake Kivu in central Africa, along the borders

of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Intense water pressure in the area separates these harmful gases from the over 2 million

residents along the banks of the lake, by trapping the gases some 80 meters below the

surface.

But any geological or volcanic phenomenon could easily alter this situation.

Although very dangerous, the methane gas trapped beneath the lake could actually be used for

industrial and domestic energy, and the two countries have agreed on a five-year project

to siphon off Lake Kivu's abundant gas supply.

But this is a two-edged sword.

It could power the surrounding towns while helping reduce the risk of a deadly explosion,

or it could disturb the ecosystem and trigger one of the most tragic eruptions in history.

Scientists fear that what happened to Cameroon's Lake Nyos 30 years ago would also happen to

Lake Kivu, only a thousand times worse.

Lake Nyos is a crater lake whose waters are also saturated with carbon dioxide.

And in 1986, a land slide caused the release of a huge cloud of CO2, which spread as far

as 16 miles within minutes, suffocating both humans and livestock.

Over 1,700 people were killed.

Lake Nyos was much smaller at only about 1.6 kilometers.

Lake Kivu, on the other hand, measures at 2,700 square kilometers.

And with over 2 million people living along its banks, an explosion would definitely be

catastrophic.

This Biomimetic Tech Could Mean Fewer Trips to the Dentist (You're Welcome) - Duration: 2:10.

Mussels may be the key to stronger, more durable dental implants.

Those little, shelled ocean critters, not, like your bicep… just to be clear.

There are a lot of problems with the current materials that dentists use for cavity fillings,

crowns and other dental implants.

For example, they fall out.

Normal everyday things like chewing and eating hard or acidic foods can wear down a filling

and its bonding with the surrounding tooth.

And this can lead to the filling cracking or falling out.

God forbid you chew... with your teeth!

And the problem of the falling-out fillings could be solved by mussels!

Well, not actually mussels, but the adhesive they use to stick to things.

For years, scientists have been searching for a strong, reliable, adhesive.

And now, inspired by nature, they think they've found it.

These little creatures have an incredible ability to tightly stick to wet surfaces like

rocks and boats and hang on for dear life.

And because of this bonding, they can withstand a lot - pummelling waves, blistering, dry

heat, and salt water cycles.

They do this with what are called byssal threads.

They reach out from inside the shell to help mussels attach themselves to things.

And they're super resistant to breaking.

Byssal threads are 5 times stronger than our strongest tendon, the Achilles.

These threads contain a group of catecholic compounds which let them stick to a variety

of wet surfaces, through bonds on the sub-nanoscopic molecular level!

Because this adhesion works so well in water, it has been looked at for use in surgery and

even for the U.S. Navy.

And now there's another group who want this stuff.

Dentists.

Scientists have tried using a dental bonding material made from catecholic compounds and

it is very promising.

Implants adhered with this material had a 10 times stronger bond and a 50 percent increase

in toughness!

It's still in it's early stages but this sounds super promising!

Less broken or displaced implants mean less trips to the dentist.

Which is basically life goals, let's be real.

You know those nights where you're like "eh, I realllly don't feel like brushing

my teeth" so you don't?

Do you know what that does to your teeth?

Find out here.

Do you hate the dentist or are you one of the few people that love it?

MAJOR WWE Debut REVEALED! Call-Up Plans LEAKED?! | WrestleTalk News Sept. 2017 - Duration: 4:44.

Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News - I'm Oli Davis.

Major WWE Debut Revealed Mickie James - while your return to WWE last

year hasn't been a roaring success, you'll always be remembered for that incredible feud

with Trish Stratus, culminating at Wrestlemania 22.

Alicia Fox - you have a career spanning nine years in WWE, one of the company's longest

for still active female performers.

And Dana Brooke - you might not have been the smoothest in the ring, but you had so

much potential, a great look and promising mic skills.

Ladies, it's been an honour watching your careers.

But sadly, now, Asuka's gonna kill you.

Last night's Raw revealed that the undefeated NXT Women's Champion will be debuting on

Monday nights with a very creepy promo package, finishing with the end card tease 'Asuka

Coming Soon'.

Going by how long it took Emmalina to debut with those 'Coming Soon' promos, expect

Asuka to show up on Raw in early 2019.

Thankfully, she'll apparently debut much sooner, with Cage Side Seats reporting Asuka

will appear in mid-October for her first match at the Raw pay-per-view TLC, while Dave Meltzer

claims she's expected for a November call-up, in time for Survivor Series.

It all really depends on when Asuka will be medically cleared.

WWE revealed she broke her collarbone at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III last month, in her

match against Ember Moon.

With an estimated recovery time between 6-8 weeks, this would put her return in early

to mid-October.

In the meantime, Asuka vacated her NXT Women's Championship - which she held for over 500

days - to head up to the main roster undefeated.

A streak that, according to Dirty Sheets, will continue on Raw.

The site broke that Asuka would be going to Monday nights last month, reporting that Vince

McMahon initially wanted her to drop the title on her way out of NXT, but Triple H fought

to have her called up to the main roster undefeated.

According to their report, Asuka won't lose until after she's captured the Raw Women's

Championship.

The problem with all this is that Raw's women's division is very light on over talent

right now.

Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax have been the only really protected performers, with Sasha Banks

consistently losing her title defences and Bayley out with injury.

The rest of the division - Mickie James, Emma, Dana Brooke and Alicia Fox - have been afterthoughts.

That's reportedly why Raw has been building up Emma in recent weeks, adding her to the

Women's Fatal Four Way match at No Mercy - so when Asuka does debut, she'll have

credible competition to defeat.

"Asuka is going to dominate the division.

She's going to go through everyone on her march to the Raw Women's Championship."

GFW Not Selling To WWE?

One of the major stories from last week was Sports Illustrated's report that GFW (the

new name for TNA) were "hemorrhaging" money and parent company Anthem could be looking

to sell their tape library to WWE.

Appearing on Wrestling Observer Radio, Impact Wrestling President Ed Nordholm denied that's

the case, claiming: "We're invested in this company.

We're growing it...It makes no sense for me to sell it [to WWE] for that kind of price.

I'd rather keep it, put it up on the app, and monetize it myself."

The app Nordholm's speaking about is the Global Wrestling Network - a streaming service

to rival WWE's, and one for which they have rather large plans:

"We want it to be a generic place for AAA, NOAH, if we can persuade New Japan or anybody."

WrestleRamble Punishment The punishment for this month's WrestleRamble

battle between myself and Luke Owen is to record a cover version of a WWE entrance theme.

But which WWE entrance theme should we cover.

A whopping 16,000 of you have voted...and almost half chose Nia Jax's 'I'm Not

Like Most Girls'.

Oli is already one-nil up and it's all on the line.

Tune into WrestleRamble to see who is the most not like a usual girl...ultimate thrill

ALERT: Vice President Pence Barely Escaped An ASSASSINATION Yesterday And NOBODY Is Talking About It - Duration: 1:31.

Yesterday afternoon Mike Pence was busy visiting Pennsylvania for the 9/11 Memorial honoring the heroes

or Flight 93.

It was during that visit that he escaped an assassination attempt.

Right before Pence flew into town, the Secret Service caught wind of William Robert Dunbar's

plan to take out the Vice President.

Dunbar, a 22-year-old National Guardsman from New Jersy, was arrested on duty for saying,

'If someone pays me enough money, I will kill the vice president.'

That's right, Dunbar wanted to KILL Mike Pence.

It seems like he simply lacked the courage to do so without some backing.

Luckily, he was reported for his violent rhetoric and sent to the County Prison in lieu of his

$250,000 bond.

Luckily for us, this would-be murderer was stopped in time and VP Pence and his wife

were able to make their trip safely and successfully.

They even released this beautiful video of Pence's trip and commemorative speech for

our fallen heroes of 9/11.

If you are glad that Vice President Mike Pence is still alive and the perpetrator was arrested,

celebrate with an Amen.

If you want to help warn him, Trump, and everyone else how dangerous and deranged these leftists

are becoming share this and let the world know.

RIP HOME BUTTON - iPhone X - Duration: 2:38.

Before the iPhone, phones looked like this.

Introduction to the iPhone now phones look like this.

The iPhone has always been about touch interfaces, from the keyboard to the user-interface, to

even operating the hardware but it relied solely on touch, at least until recently...

The iPhone has had a few key buttons, the sleep/wake, volume up/down, and the Home Button.

The Home button has been our way for the last decade to return to the home screen from any

app with a single press.

With a long press, it's been the way to get Siri's attention.

With a double press, I'm presented with all my most recent apps.

With a triple press, I'm able to easily turn on VoiceOver, Zoom, Magnify, along with

other Accessibility features.

And with a rest of my finger, I'm able to unlock my phone, use Apple Pay, and download

apps with Touch ID.

As you know the Home Button plays many roles when it comes to the functionality of our

phones.

You see, Steve Jobs has never been a fan of buttons, from the first Mac having no arrow

keys to the iPod shuffle having no buttons at one point.

It was actually a selling point for the iPhone to have as few buttons as possible.

Apple is continuing this tradition with the release of the iPhone X and the removal of

the Home Button.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus foreshadowed this design change a year ago when the clicking

Home Button was actually ditched in favor for a capacitive touch surface with haptic

feedback.

But what does this mean for functionality?

Over the years Apple has included new ways to interact with the functions of our phones.

For instances, I just raise my iPhone to wake it up.

I can tell Siri to adjust my volume.

Speaking of Siri, "Hey Siri!".

In iOS 11 on the iPad you can access other apps through split screen, the dock, and Control

Center.

Speaking of Control Center, in iOS 11 I can easily tap my accessibility shortcuts and

find individual functions in the new customizable Control Center.

But what about Touch ID?

With the iPhone X, Apple has ditched the fingerprint sensor in favor for Face ID, a facial recognition

system that is able to uniquely identify you.

This acts a new method for unlocking your phone, Apple Pay, and downloading apps.

That's great and all, but how would we return from an app back to the home screen?

The iPhone X is all screen from the ears to the chin.

Similar to iPad's dock in iOS 11, the iPhone X will have one as well, pull up and easily

access the new Home Button, a virtual home button.

Although the physical home button is long gone, the functionality is all still there.

What does this mean for the remaining buttons?

What about other devices?

We'll have to wait and see but I bet you, expect less physical buttons.

R.I.P Home Button.

Rest in peace.

Thanks so much for checking out the video.

Let me know if you're going to be buying the new iPhone anytime soon.

If you like this video give it a thumbs up if you haven't already.

Be sure to check out the video that's generated just for you on screen.
