I have been watching a lot of Jordan Peterson's videos one of his topics that
I find interesting is of the shadow which YouTube channel bitesize
philosophy has a neat playlist of clips regarding that topic watching the
several clips and lectures about the shadow reminded me of the anime series
Tokyo ghoul watching nice guy and human kaneki transformed into brutal and
dangerous school was like an illustration of a real-life person
accepting their inner shadow so what is the shadow the shadow is a concept
coined by the Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung the shadow is
the unknown darkness of our personality and resides deeply in our unconscious
due to human tendency of repressing primitive and negative emotions or
impulses quite paradoxically accepting this dark side of your personality can
be regarded as one of the ways to becoming an enlightened individual the
author of this concept Carl Jung has a nice way of summing it up in his book
psychology and religion unfortunately there can be no doubt that man is on the
whole less good than he imagines himself or wants to be everyone carries a shadow
and the less it is embodied in the individuals conscious life the blacker
and denser it is at all counts it forms an unconscious snag sorting our most
well meant intentions with the concept defined we can begin talking about Tokyo
ghoul in this video essay we will be examining ken kaneki transformation from
human to ghoul and how it relates to the Jungian concept of the shadow
to start off let's go to the beginning of Carnegie's character when toka first
saw him in his starving state she offered him the arm of a human however
we see that kaneki is incapable of accepting it Kenickie denies his new
life as a ghoul and instead embraces the humanity that is left inside of him this
brings up our first idea of the shadow it's easy to think of yourself as good
and so here we are with all this reliable infrastructure and because of
that we don't really have to compete with each other much I mean some you
don't compete for food you don't compete for shelter or some people do but not
very many so it's really easy to think of yourself as good because you're not
doing anything nasty to anyone but ghouls
are always competing sometimes they compete with other ghouls for food or
compete with the doves in order to live or in a sense compete with their own
fundamental nature to blend in with human society such as learning how to
eat human food without a disgusted look all these characteristics combine to
make ghouls feel evil they have to put their goals first and reside to harmful
ways to attain set goals essentially the idea of competition gives ghouls and
evil nature for Kenickie situation it is definitely easy for him to think that
he's a good person before he turned into a ghoul he was just a regular human he
could hang out with his best friend he day he could eat food at restaurants and
enjoy desserts and he could roam around safely in the daytime this is relevant
because pre-surgery kaneki didn't have to compete for food or shelter as all
these services were provided to him so in his day to day functions since kaneki
isn't competing with anyone he isn't doing anything wrong the idea of not
competing makes kaneki believe he is good person despite kaneki slowly
connecting with his ghoul side he still remains in the belief that he is a good
person for example when kaneki encountered a moan in their first fight
he didn't kill him and this scene kaneki was mentally holding himself back from
killing a person to stay firm in his ideology of being a good person you can
also say that he's repressing his ghoul sight or his dark nature however kaneki
believing he's a good person because he's harmless is a concept that Jordan
Peterson would disagree with the main reason being is that a good person is
contemptible this is something I did learn from young is that you cannot be a
good person until you know how much evil you contain within you it is not
possible and it's partly because you just don't have any potency like if
you're just naive if you're just nice if you'd never hurt anyone you've never
heard a fly you don't have the capability for any of that why would
anyone ever take you seriously there are a good amount of times where this case
applies to kaneki almost every character in tokyo ghoul never takes kaneki
serious up until his white hair toca never took kaneki serious even when she
saw that he was a one-eyed cool Tsukiyama
downright foiled him into his grand gourmet plan and kaneki was horrific ly
beat down by Jason because he looked like an easy and familiar target
because of this kaneki is never seen as a threat and is constantly getting hurt
but how this can affect a person brings us to the next idea of the shadow
accumulation of resentment you're trying to impress the people that are there and
you're trying to get them to like you and so you maybe get jabbed out a little
bit and you laugh and you know you're you go along with everyone so that they
like you and then you go home and you're bitterly resentful about the way that
you were put down at this party and that's gonna make all sorts of
aggressive I wish I could have said it's gonna make all sorts of aggressive and
venj vengeful thoughts sort of flashed through your imagination with the
examples I mentioned earlier kaneki was jabbed at plenty of times but
what we need to know is if kaneki had an accumulation of aggressive emotions
towards these situations and the only way to do this is to venture deep down
into kaneki subconscious the time that we're down here we see several events
from Carnegie's memory that led to resentment referring back to the jordan
Peterson clip he spoke about how resentment can lead to vengeful thoughts
the particular memory that kanji is resentful of is in his memories with his
deceased mother we see kaneki praising his mother for being a strong individual
she works hard for others much to the point that it over works her and even
kills her this led to kaneki being forced to stay with his aunt who treats
him less than a human being making for a very lonely experience despite going
through all this pain kana he still believes his mother is a great person
throughout the time were in his subconscious
reezy forces kaneki to face the truth on this situation she presents to him a
series of events and hypothetical situations that kaneki would never want
to happen or happen again but for these circumstances to not occur kaneki will
have to hurt people kaneki will have to end his ideology of being a good person
and to stop letting himself get harmed a lesson that his idolized figure taught
him his mother kaneki will have to discard her
current feelings for his mother and instead bring out the feelings that
reside deep in his subconscious from here kaneki finally reveals his true
vengeful thoughts after facing this inner ordeal we now have the final idea
of the shadow the integration of the shadow the whole time that we're down in
Kentucky's consciousness we are also interacting with Riza who is a figment
of his imagination every word and sentence that she says all carry the
goal in mind of overturning Kentucky's good-guy personality the whole time she
is forcing kaneki to face the selfish destructive and immoral impulses and
capacities of his subconscious not only that but any manner of her presentation
she seems very mischievous and malicious but since R is a is part of Carnegie's
consciousness everything she says we can't assume is actually kaneki telling
himself kaneki subconscious is reminding kaneki
himself just how bad of a person he actually is on the inside
in other words Riza is kaneki shadow from here on
kaneki begins to accept his shadow with open arms he decides to stop being a
harmless person to start using his actual strength to accept his vengeful
thoughts and most importantly to eat Reesie as a way of fully accepting
himself kaneki has finally become enlightened with his true self
kaneki is now one with his inner shadow
