Waching daily Sep 22 2017

Defining "healthy" is hard.

Some say weight and health are perfectly correlated, but others don't.

There's a veritable cornucopia of opinions on what good digestive health looks like,

and only a handful of those assessments are in agreement.

And let's not even get started on the issue of what constitutes a healthy diet!

In an effort to lock down some solid information, here's what physicians, researchers, and other

folks in the know have to say when it comes to indicators of good health.

Full, lustrous hair

While brittle, dry, or thinning hair can be signs that something might be going wrong,

the reverse is also true: healthy hair is an indication of a healthy body.

Today show health expert Joy Bauer, says,

"Good hair depends on the body's ability to construct a proper hair shaft, as well as

the health of the skin and follicles.

Good nutrition assures the best possible environment for building strong, lustrous hair."

Nourished by key components of your diet like protein, vitamins, and healthy fats, healthy

hair reflects that you're eating well and absorbing all the good stuff from your food.

Strong nails

Another window into your health is, one might say, right at your fingertips: it's your nails!

Dermatologist Christine Poblete-Lopez, of the Cleveland Clinic says,

"Your nails are a very good reflection of your health.

Many things can occur in the nails that can signify systemic or skin problems."

A pink nail bed without lines or discolorations, as well as strong nails without pitting, lines,

or weakness, are all signs of good health.

However, if your nails undergo changes like discoloration or start to look pitted, it

could be a sign that something is amiss.

Director of Advanced Dermatology and spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology.

Joshua Fox, MD, explains,

"Changes in the nails can be a sign of a local disease like a fungus infection or a sign

of a systemic disease like lupus or anemia."

Let's talk about poo

Ok, so this one is super awkward — but it's also super important.

As Dr. Vasudha Dhar, a gastroenterologist writing for Everyday Health, says,

"There really is no easier way to discover what's happening inside your body than seeing

what comes out of it."

According to Dhar, there's a wide range of "normal" bowel movements.

She explains,

"Everyone's GI tract operates differently based on a combination of constant and changing

factors ─ genetics, hydration, dietary habits, medication use, and ongoing health issues."

Instead of worrying about whether or not your poo meets these purportedly ideal criteria,

focus on what is typical for you.

If you notice symptoms like visible blood, continual constipation, or prolonged diarrhea,

however, it's time to call your doc.

Social support

Some of the most interesting research to come out recently has shown that having friends,

a strong social support network, and opportunities for interaction are all profoundly good for

you.

It seems obvious that this would impact mental health, but research is showing that it affects

physical health, too.

According to a study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, people with

more social connections are

"healthier and live longer than their more isolated peers."

Social connections and relationships affect behavioral, mental, and physical health.

Basically, no aspect of a person's health goes untouched by their degree of isolation

and loneliness.

According to the Harvard Women's Health Watch newsletter, social connectivity can reduce

stress, as well as triggers stress-reducing hormones.

What qualifies as social support?

Offering to help others, giving out advice, and affection all fit the bill.

Say "ahhhh"

Melanie St. Ours, a Baltimore-based clinical herbalist, says that the Chinese Medicine-inspired

practice of tongue reading can be a great barometer of health and wellness.

She told The List:

"It's not a substitute for medical diagnosis, but if you want to get a sense of how well

you're digesting last night's dinner, or how your body is handling stress, your tongue

can tell you a lot."

St. Ours explained further how to read the tongue for signs in an article on MindBodyGreen.

If the tip of your tongue is red, for example, it's a sign that your heart, mind, and emotions

are revved up.

Other tongue signs include a thick coating ─ particularly towards the back ─ which

signals that your digestion isn't performing optimally.

Teeth marks on the sides of the tongue could mean low energy, slow digestion, and that

your brain is hard at work.

Hmm.

Maybe consider checking your tongue before asking WebMD about your latest ache or pain?

The vital signs

According to the BBC, basic fitness guidelines include,

"30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times a week."

Doctors also look at whether a person can do reasonable fitness activities such as walk

a 15-minute mile, carry two shopping bags from the store to the car, and climb a flight

of stairs without getting winded.

Furthermore, having normal vital signs is, well, vital.

As published in the BBC report, normal, healthy vital signs include,

"a resting pulse of about 70 beats per minute, and a respiratory rate of about 16 to 20 breaths

per minute."

Mind, body, spirit

Proactively managing your mental and emotional health is another key sign of being healthy,

especially since, according to the U.S. government's Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion,

disorders like depression are strongly connected to other chronic diseases like diabetes, heart

disease, and cancer.

Furthermore, as David Goldberg, a professor at the Institute of Psychiatry in London,

told Psych Central,

"...not only do many chronic illnesses cause higher rates of depression, but depression

has been shown to antedate some chronic physical illnesses."

Exercise, meditation, therapy -- they all have their benefits, that in turn benefit

each other.

To your health!

One thing that people often find when trying to make healthy changes is that it can all

feel totally overwhelming.

But, if you find that you want, or need, to make some changes, it's okay to take things

slowly.

Add in a few things that you feel good about.

A salad at lunch, an afternoon walk, or calling a friend for support, can actually go a long

way.

It EXCEPT Pennywise dances to anything pt. 23 - Duration: 3:49.

I used to live in a small building downtown. One of the reasons I moved out was the bad neighborhood, including this guy in the apartment right over mine. It was a weird looking fella who mostly kept to himself.

Around midnight though, there was frequently a strange noise that got on my nerves. It wasn't loud, to be fair, but I have really light sleep so it was hard to get my eyes shut with those little bumping sounds going on and on. It reminded me of high heels walking about, but not as loud, as if the person causing the noise was actually trying to be silent.

After a few days, i realized the pattern was always the same, like a recording played over and over with random intervals in between. And that went on for the best part of an year, always the same sequence of bumps, slowly tattooed into my mind, sometimes for hours straight during the night.

It was only several years later, helping my daughter with her homework, that I learned a little bit of morse code. She knocked on the table with her knuckles and a shiver immediately went through my spine as I recognized that exact pattern. When i asked her what it meant, she laughed. "It's the easiest one, daddy" she said. "It's the one to call for help.".

Why Did Kim Jong-un Call Donald Trump "Dotard?" | What's Trending Now! - Duration: 3:23.

The word "dotard" has started trending after Kim Jong-un used it to describe

President Donald Trump. Welcome back to What's Trending, I'm Adam Bozarth. Please

be sure to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE for more. North Korea's dictator Kim Jong-un

released a statement on Thursday, criticizing US President Trump for his

antagonistic speech at the UN. You might remember hearing about this

speech, particularly this moment where Trump seems to forget Kim Jong-un's name.

Yes. You heard it right.

Trump referred to Kim Jong-un as Rocket Man. And Kim returned fire in this war of

words. In his statement, Kim says of Trump, "He is unfit to hold the prerogative of

the supreme command of a country, and he is surely a rogue and a gangster fond of

playing with fire, rather than a politician." He continues, "Action is the

best option in treating the dotard who, hard of hearin,g is uttering only what he

wants to say." Kim ends the statement with, "I will surely and definitely tame the

mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire." Kim's words caused quite a stir in the

United States, especially one word in particular. Dotard. Merriam-Webster

tweets, "Kim Jong-un calls Trump a mentally deranged U.S. dotard. Searches

for 'dotard' are high as a kite." Because, let's be honest, it sounds really

offensive and made up specifically for Donald Trump. So what does it mean

anyways? A dotard is "a person in his or her dotage," which is "a state or period

of senile decay marked by a decline of mental poise and alertness." Kim

Jong-un is calling Donald Trump senile? Would a senile old man forget his

wife came on a trip with him to Florida, even though she's standing right behind

him? "On behalf of myself, our Vice President...

Melania really wanted to be with us. She's really..." I mean, yeah, but dotard? Where

does that even come from? That sounds like AP English stuff. How come the

Rocket Man speak English for better than me? It turns out that the North Korean

reporters have a very old translation book. Associated Press reporter Jean H

Lee tweets, "I've been inside [Korean Central News Agency's] newsroom. They're

using very old Korean-English dictionaries." And "dodart" is actually the

closest word in English that the Korean news agency could find. South Korean

journalist Jihye Lee tweets, "The Korean original statement [literally translates to]

"old beast lunatic"-- which is translated into "dotard." Well, regardless of how you

translate it, it has a lot of people on social media buzzing. John Robie replies,

"I would totally buy a mixtape from Old Beast Lunatic." Gustavo Sorola writes, "You:

Rocket Man. Me, an intellectual: dotard." Funny or Die jokes, "dotard (noun): a word you

didn't previously know existed, but google today and said, 'Damn, that's pretty

accurate.'" Rob Delaney tweets, "100% Trump's team

printed out fake definitions of the word "dotard" so he didn't have an epiphany and

start crying." So what do you think of this nuclear war of words? Let us know in

the COMMENTS section below. For more stories like these, go to whatstrending.com.

ラブライブ サンシャイン仕様【JZX100チェイサー】アニヲタが乗る痛車にスティーブがドキドキ試乗!スティーブ的視点 Steve's POV - Duration: 12:03.

Sato-san, this car sounds awesome!

Thank you! I'm still running the stock catalytic converter too.

I just changed the muffler only!

It sounds incredible.

Where do you live?

Yokohama.

This is quite a car you got!

I assume you like anime?

Yes I do! I like anime and cars too so I combined the 2 into this car!

It's very impressive!

You got a lot of monitors in here!

I like a lot of monitors!

Is this car considered an "Itasha"?

Yes it is!

But it isn't even close to being a hardcore Itasha yet.

You're gonna make it even more crazy than this?

Yes! I have plans for an upcoming Itasha event.

This car won't stand out at a hardcore event like that...

This car doesn't stand out?!?!?!

No, it doesn't... it needs to be wrapped with more characters!

More characters than it has on it now???

Yeah.. I only have a little bit on my rear window right now.. It needs more!

Have you been watching Steve's POV for a long time?

Yes.. I found your RX-7 videos first.

Did you like that car?

Yeah, it looked really clean!

Did you like the LEDs?

Yes!

A lot of foreigners take a liking to Japan because of anime.

But I am totally different...

Honestly, I had no interest in anime at all.

Even now I don't really watch any anime...

The characters seem cute, but I really don't know anything about them...

You're surrounded by cute characters all over this car!! LOL

It's kind of like you're driving with a bunch of girls!!

So you must really like anime?

Yes I do!

So when you put love for cars and anime together, this is what you get!

Yes, people who love both usually have an Itasha like this; meaning a sports car with anime on it.

I'd love to go to an Itasha event sometime.

Please invite me sometime.

You got a lot of stickers on this car too!

But I don't see a Steve's POV sticker anywhere....

I don't have one to put on the car!

I'm gonna hook you up with one!

I'll put it on the car for sure!!

How old are you?

I'm 24.

A lot of people say that young people aren't into cars anymore...

young people don't mind taking the train or buses and have no interest in owning a car.

Have you liked cars all your life?

When I was really young I Iiked trucks a lot.

Big trucks like that one in front of us?

I have an older brother who got into drifting in high school.

I was influenced by that and got more into sports and drift cars like this.

The clutch seems very hard on this car... is it a twin plate?

Yes.. its metal twin plate clutch.

So it must be pretty hard to get moving from a dead stop...

Yes it is...

It grabs really hard and fast...

It must be hard not to stall it...

Yeah.. its pretty hard, especially because it doesn't engage until pretty far up on the pedal.

It's easy to stall it!! LOL

I like the color of this car a lot.

The color is called Candy Red...

I belong to a club named Freestyle. Candy Red is the official team color.

It sounds so good!

That is awesome!

It sounds like a jet!!

I love it!!

That's awesome!

This is a really fun car!

You probably never get bored of driving it!

Sato-san, I appreciate being taken on a drive with you...

but I've never actually driven a Toyota Chaser before...

I know we just met, but would it be ok for me to drive your car a little bit?

Yeah, that's ok... I mean you came all the way from America...

I want to go home with good memories of this car!!

I hope you like it!

Thank you so much!!!

But one thing! Please don't laugh at me if I stall it, ok?

I still stall it all the time, so don't worry!!

I better say it now so I'm not embarrassed when it happens later!

Wow! The clutch pedal is almost all the way up and....

I'm so sorry!!!

I'm sweating bullets!! Sorry!

That sound is interesting!

This clutch grabs really high!

Yeah, I know!

Sorry! Sorry!

I'll get it for sure with a little more practice.

Just don't laugh at me ok?

What a terrific sound!!

This car is fast and light too!

It's pretty much untouched original...

How much horsepower does it have?

It's rated at 280hp.

It's very light and responsive.

It really winds up fast too!

I think the twin plate clutch helps with that...

It also sounds very fast!!!

I drive a lot of cars and they are all different in many ways...

The way the clutch grabs... the way they handle and steer...

It takes a little time to get used to those differences...

This steering wheel looks like its from a video game or something...

I saw Fast and Furious cars had steering wheels like this with buttons all over it.....

I wanted a wheel like the ones in the movie.

I like this car!

Have you ever sat in the passenger seat of your own car before?

A few times, yes...

You had someone else drive?

Yes, I let my friends drive before.

What is it like to sit in that seat?

It's completely different sitting here than driving myself.

I like to see my car driving from another car as well...

When this makes it on Steve's POV you will be able to see it a lot!!

Oh man... another traffic light.

I think this is the last light we are going to hit...

I hope I can take off smooth finally!

I did it!! High 5 Sato-san!!

That was pretty smooth I think!

Can I downshift and blast this tunnel a bit??

Wow!!!

This car is really fun!

Yes!!! I did it!! LOL

I finally got it at the end of our drive!! LOL

Thanks so much for letting me drive your car!

You are welcome! Thank you for driving it and liking it!

I would like more foreigners to know about this kind of Itasha car.

The Toyota Chaser is very popular in Japan for drifting.

This car was never sold in USA so many Americans don't know about it.

Apparently it is very popular in Russia.

Thank you again so much!

American style handshake!

I hope we can go driving again like this sometime!

And if you come to USA, I'll let you drive my Hakosuka!!

That would be fun!

See you again!

Thank you very much!!!

Justice League NEWS Iris West And Henry Allen CUT From Justice League? Will It Effect Flashpoint? - Duration: 6:49.

what is good YouTube warstu here with a video on the Justice League movie so

you are less than 2 months away from the official movie coming out on the 17th of

November let the hype begin so we all know there were some screen testings a

couple of days ago I think it was Wednesday night even though people who

attended this event were supposed to sign a non-disclosure form stating they

would not talk about this to anyone and if they did they could be sued so a news

report without really news reports like website reports I guess you know but a

log reports are coming out that two actors have apparently not been in the

assembly cut the source isn't very reliable because it doesn't state who

actually said it it's just a case of he said she said who said what

so apparently Lex Luthor isn't in near San Walker so Batman news calm reported

this but let me stress this guys it's not 100% because the article on his blog

site doesn't list who said it so if you can't say who your source is it didn't

happen so if this is true the footage could still be used on the extended

blu-ray so apparently Lex Luthor was meant to break out Arkham Asylum with

Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson who was also ruining the room idli being cut now

that he isn't going to be involved with a Matt Reeves movie if that's true and

it was supposed to have some scenes with its Steppenwolf

but if this is true it doesn't really mean that Jesse's out as such because

it's not the final cut it's just an assembled cut they could put them in

that last minute they could use is they could use the footage he filmed in the

extended blu-ray so it doesn't really mean he's out properly let me know guys

what you think's down below so Batman is calm also reported the following

exclusive kursi Clements scenes as iris West cut from Justice League now guys I

don't understand how you can use a word exclusive when there's no source it's

literally there's no interview I will link the

article down below guys there's literally no interview that says that

the actor confirmed it no one's confirmed it's just someone that he said

she said went to the screening it literally could be made up I'm not

saying it could it is made up I'm saying it could be made up so it's kind of

interesting because the actress described her role in Justice League as

f in sick but fans may never get to see them sources tell Batman news that

Clemmons character that iris West has been cut for the movie now guys this is

gramma Klee worried wrong because this is not the final cut it's not like we're

in November and the movies out this is a kind of assemble cut many movies have

had screenings beforehand and they've added a lot more than taking stuff out

to take it with a pinch of salt so the article says she's been cut she was in

the latest Comic Con trailer from July she had a sick scene with a flash

breaking the screen so I think this is quite important that it dropped her out

because does this mean that Henry Allen is also being kicked out I think this is

pretty viral because if they've cut that does that mean they've also cut Henry

Allen's scene from the first two CD trailer when he was in jail with his

father and it hinted that reverse-flash a bar for frame Henry Allen's frame

Henry Allen for Nora Allen's death which proves reverse flash actually existed in

the DC EU but there was rumors that his scene had been cut as well so it appears

there's gonna be no a direct link between iris and Henry Allen to Barry

Allen in the Justice League movie if this is true which is a massive shame

guys because the flashpoint movie is coming out so you could have presumed

that they could start the flash story in this movie because obviously in Suicide

Squad bad mother Superman we don't really have any story by him so

who else has been cut from the movie super guy from the movie guys and let me

know in the comments down below we would keep you up to date with all the latest

Justice League movie news all your I do guys's hit a notification button down

below so the info within this video is just rumored and nothing has been

confirmed no sources were listed no names

no nothing so guys take it with a pinch of salt Batman news.com does report a

lot of things and most of the time he is right he has been right a few time

acquired good few times but we can't believe this hair guys because there's

no sources can we have a Barry Allen with our eyes West to me that's like

having a super manner without Lois Lane it would just seem odd if that wasn't

going to be the case and it's very strange to be honest guys because we do

have the flashpoint flash solo movie coming up and to take arts West out of

this and potentially Henry Allen would be very strange I know it's a Justice

League movie it's more about the origin of the whole team rather than their

father and stuff but if you're gonna have cyborg father in it and potentially

cyborgs and mother in it why wouldn't you have Barry Allen's girlfriend or

Barry Allen's future girlfriend because we don't know what version of Barry

Allen's we've got we don't know if he's with iris West because I've been in the

comic books iris West gets married to barry allen like they're gonna get

married spoiler in the flashes before so we

don't know what version of iOS west this is so i was really looking to see it

getting a first look at eyes west scene as she said her scenes were sick so if

this is true i really hope it's not true i'm very disappointed that we're not

gonna get the first glimpse at iris West and potentially Henry Allen because

obviously the flashpoint storyline is an alternate universe where Nora Allen

Barry Allen's dead mother is alive so it would make sense to set something up in

this movie that could have a knock-on effect for the flashpoint movie but no

one currently knows when that movie's coming out it could be 2020 could be

2019 we don't know guys but that's all the

news about for today so please like subscribe and comment if you want to

guys and that would help the channel massively hit a notification button to

never miss any videos any flash videos or arrow videos just as leave it as DC

EU videos any live streams anything guys so we will catch you very soon guys in

the next video will actually be the latest information on of the four night

crossover but a DC TV version so that video will be coming out tomorrow night

at the usual time and then we have I have another just to see video

following it at some point anyway guys I will catch you soon catch ya later

Vaccine industry celebrates Disneyland measles outbreak operatio - Duration: 5:34.

Vaccine industry celebrates Disneyland measles outbreak operation as a huge success, seeks

to model similar outbreaks for more fear propaganda

Theres nothing quite as effective as a good outbreak story to keep the masses in

line when it comes to vaccines.

While resistance to vaccine mandates and the CDCs vaccination schedule have been steadily

growing in recent years, there is no doubt that the mainstream media can manipulate an

outbreak story very effectively to frighten some who were unsure into vaccinating their

children.

This was recently confirmed by a study which sought to determine how best the media can

manipulate an outbreak story in the most compelling way.

The study was published in the journal Vaccine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 28 December

2014 and 8 February 2015, 125 people were diagnosed with measles after visiting one

of the Disney theme parks or having contact with someone who did.

Interestingly, according to that same report, only 45 percent of these patients were unvaccinated,

but the mainstream media made sure nobody knew that.

The research team set out to see which stories received the most play, particularly on social

media, with a view to using the same strategies in the future.

The authors went on to examine how best to get a pro-vaccine article to go viral.

Their conclusion?

Include a clear bottom-line message explaining the meaning of vaccination. (Related: Learn

how the mainstream media manipulates the facts at Outbreak.news.)

The team discovered that articles that only contained anecdotes or stories were not likely

to move anyone to action, while articles that contained facts and statistics did marginally

better.

To really get people frightened and motivated, they determined, an article must clearly

explain the bottom line, or gist, of vaccination.

The study skirts around the issue of what this bottom line is, but one can only imagine

that it would run along the lines of: If you dont get vaccinated you will put others

in harms way and leave yourself and your children vulnerable to terrible diseases.

Vaccination, on the other hand, is 100 percent safe and 100 percent effective.

The problem is, this is simply not true.

Vaccines are neither 100 percent effective nor perfectly safe.

In truth, they contain ingredients and adjuvants that many people are not comfortable with,

and carry the risk of serious side effects.

(Related: CDC lies Measles outbreaks confirmed among children already vaccinated.)

As an example of this, lets examine the vaccine package insert for the MMR (mumps,

measles and rubella) vaccine, as posted online by Merck, the vaccines manufacturer.

First off, the growth medium for the vaccine contains recombinant human albumin the

serum albumin found in human blood, derived from aborted fetuses.

This would already be enough to disturb the consciences of thousands of potential patients,

but youll never hear the media breathe a word about it.

Next, theres the fact that while stating that safety and effectiveness of mumps

and rubella vaccine in infants less than 12 months of age have not been established,

the insert advises that in outbreak situations, health professionals should administer the

vaccine to infants between 6 and 12 months of age.

What?

After theyve just confirmed that they have no idea if its safe to do so?

Then theres the fact that the insert warns against giving the vaccine to pregnant women,

and even stresses that women should not fall pregnant within three months of receiving

the shot.

How many women are aware of this?

Finally, there are the contraindications and precautions, which are too numerous to list

but include:

Anaphylaxis can occur in patients allergic to eggs.

Vaccination can result in febrile respiratory illness or other active febrile infection.

Patients who are in any way immunosuppressed cannot receive the shot or they could die.

Though the insert claims the vaccine isnt likely to result in infection, it does warn

that excretion of small amounts of the live attenuated rubella virus from the nose

or throat has occurred in the majority of susceptible individuals 7 to 28 days after

vaccination, and that after vaccination the virus can be transmitted to a baby through

breastmilk.

And then theres this:

Death from various, and in some cases unknown, causes has been reported rarely following

vaccination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines. [Emphasis added]

Bet you never read about that after

the Disneyland outbreaks.

(soft inspirational music)

- I feel like, oh look at all the friends I have,

and all the fun things we do together.

That's easy to portray.

That's what Facebook is and Instagram and all these things.

People are proud to show how they fit in.

It's exactly the opposite if you're looking to make friends.

- I think that if you're trying

to quit your day job to become an entrepreneur

you should be very confident in your product or your service

but more importantly very confident in yourself.

- We don't want them to worry about okay,

I can't really go gym or I can't be physically active

because of a clothing.

That should not be a barrier.

- And so I think most people at my school

believe in climate change.

It's not really an issue in that.

But a lot of people don't really feel

the personal connection.

- It's so true when he says

And it's because with paint you can always just fix it.

Weekend Reflection - September 24, 2017 - Duration: 1:58.

- Hello everyone and welcome to our Weekend Reflection

brought to you by Spirit Juice Studios.

This week we focus on the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 20.

And I must admit, that this gospel is very challenging.

In the parable he talks about a landowner

who has a vineyard, and he goes out

to hire laborers for the work.

So they start working in the morning,

and they work all the way until the end of the day.

And then you have other people

that come and they work at midday,

but then there are those who only come

and they work one hour,

and they get paid the exact same amount as everybody else.

When you think about this story, it seems really unfair,

especially for an American who

lives in a capitalistic society.

I'm thinking, okay I'm gonna work all day

and then somebody's gonna come for one hour

and get the same paycheck as me?

Being called to the vineyard,

hearing the call, and getting to the vineyard and working,

letting your life be about that,

is the gift in and of itself.

For those people that say,

"Well, I'll just live my life the way I want to,

"and on my deathbed I'll make a confession."

Well if you get that chance,

what a tragedy that we would try and cheapen God's grace.

Or miss an opportunity to live life in the spirit.

Remember that Jesus said,

"My yoke is easy, my burden is light."

And sometimes I think, "No Jesus, your yoke isn't easy

and light, this life is difficult."

But life without Jesus is a heavy yoke.

It is filled with despair,

it can be filled with hopelessness,

because this life's true meaning is found in Jesus,

who is the way, the truth, and the life.

Brothers and sisters if you have been called

to carry your cross early,

it's not a curse, it's a blessing.

And for those that come in late,

for those that join the fold,

we pray for them and we rejoice

that they receive the same reward as us,

the gift of eternal life,

the gift of reconciliation with the Lord.

#2 Were suicides in Micronesia really increasing?┃Social Problems of Micronesia - Duration: 6:41.

One of the earliest research question on Micronesian suicide was whether suicide rates were really

increasing.

This was an important early question because before the 1980s, we really had no idea what

the suicide rates were because there were no official statistics on suicide being compiled.

The first real recorded attempt to answer this question was by Francis Hezel.

In his publication on suicide in 1976, titled Micronesia's Hanging Spree, Hezel noted

what appeared to be a sudden increase in Chuukese youth suicide.

Though a crude first attempt to look into suicide in Micronesia, his article gathered

much outside attention on Micronesian suicide.

However, for many members of the Chuukese community, they did not really regard suicide

as a major cause of alarm because they contended like many neighboring Pacific societies that

suicide has always been part of their society.

A manifestation of a old cultural trait.

This was a reasonable view because there are oral traditions of suicide throughout all

of Micronesia.

According to Hezel, one can find

"Tales of sweethearts, promised by obdurate parents to others in marriage

leaping hand in hand from spectacular heights; of old men, broken in health and spirit, paddling

away in canoes never to be seen again; of shamed young men jumping from coconut trees

before the eyes of their families".

Hezel's search into the archives further supports the notion that suicide has always

been around in Micronesian.

He finds old protestant missionary and catholic priest reports that recorded multiple instances

of suicide throughout Micronesia.

For instance, one report dating back to 1899, showed that at a missionary boarding school

in Moen now called Weno there were six hangings within a period of two years.

Four unsuccessful and two successful.

The school directress found it necessary to train a group of young boys to cut down victims

in future emergencies.

As of this point, the answer to the question on whether Micronesian suicides were increasing

was inconclusive.

What Hezel needed was a more systematic study to gather more and better data.

At the time that Hezel's first article appeared, a cultural anthropologist named Donald Rubinstein

was doing field research on the small coral island of Fais in Yap State.

Two years later, Rubinstein partnered with Hezel, to plan the first systematic study

of suicide in Micronesia.

With this study, they will be able to finally gather answers.

Like finding out whether Micronesian suicides were really increasing as Hezel suggested,

or as others have suggested, suicides in Micronesia have always been high, and a big part of society,

perhaps a manifestation of a old cultural trait, a cultural way of resolving conflict.

Hezel and Rubinstein, conducted an epidemiological survey.

They collected all the available official statistics from hospital records and court

certificates of deaths throughout Micronesia from 1979-1981.

From these death certificates, they followed up by interviewing the friends and family

members of the suicide victims following the guidelines of psychological autopsies to get

information on victim's "family background, education, work history, health, use of alcohol

or drugs, mental problems, and the events leading up to the person's suicide, and

how the suicide actually occurred"

The amount of friends and family members of the victims of suicide they interviewed, numbered

in the hundreds.

What Hezel and Rubinstein found through their research definitely confirms the fact that suicide

has increased from the early 1960s to early 1980s.

Suicides were doubling every decade from the 1960s to the 1970s, and the 1970s to the 1980s.

With the most dramatic increase in suicide during the 70s.

It was not until the early 80s that suicides began to show signs of decline.

However, that was to be short lived because suicides made a comeback in the mid 80s, showing

no signs of decreasing.

Hezel and Rubinstein's research not only provided the answer to whether suicide rates were increasing

in Micronesia, but also provided answers to other important questions on Micronesian suicide.
