The Physics of Sound: How and Why Sound Heals

The following is excerpted from The Humming Effect: Sound Healing for Health and Happiness

by Jonathan Goldman and Andi Goldman.

An examination of the majority of spiritual paths and religions on this planet reveals

an overriding belief that sound was the primary force of creation.

Examples of this come from the Old Testament (And God said, Let there be Light)

and the New Testament (In the beginning was the Word).

It comes from many other traditions Egyptian, Hopi, Mayan, Polynesian, and more which

all have creation myths that invoke the power of sound.

It is said in the Hindu spiritual path that Nada Brahman everything is sound.

A female voice mandala made visible by a CymaScope

Even from a Western scientific perspective, we talk about the Big Bang, signifying

that the creation of the universe was somehow sonic in origin.

Modern scientists, like our ancient mystics, tell us that everything is in a state of vibration,

from the electrons moving around the nucleus of an atom to planets in distant galaxies

spinning around their suns.

From the very tiny to the very large, everything vibrates.

As many of our modern physicists understand, energy and matter are interrelated.

Thus, if all forms of energy are putting out a vibration, all that energy can be considered

sound, whether we can hear it or not.

Frequency

Sound is energy that travels as a wave.

The wave enters our ears and travels through our auditory pathways into our brain, ultimately

affecting our breathing, heart rate, and nervous system.

We experience this wavelike energy primarily as a phenomenon that we hear.

However, these waves also pass into our body, affecting us on a cellular level.

Sounds are measured in cycles per second, or frequency, as measured in hertz (Hz).

Slow-moving waves of sound create deep tones.

A sound with a frequency of 60 Hz, for example, is very bassy and low.

A sound with fast waves, such as 1,000 cycles per second, would be a relatively trebly and

high-pitched.

The lowest note on a piano has a frequency of about 24 Hz, and the highest note is around

5,000 Hz.

Our range of hearing extends from around 16 Hz to around 16,000 Hz (or sometimes higher

young children, for example, can hear upwards of 18,000 Hz or more).

However, just because we cant hear something doesnt mean a sound isnt being created.

As an example, our friends in the ocean, the dolphins, can project and receive frequencies

upwards of 180,000 Hz thats more than ten times our best range of hearing.

Sounds with a frequency below the human level of hearing are called infrasound; sounds with

a frequency above the human level of hearing are called ultrasound.

Resonance

Knowing that all matter vibrates, we can move on to explore the idea that every object including

every organ, bone, and tissue in our body has resonance, or a natural vibratory

state.

Theres been much speculation on how to determine the natural frequencies of a healthy

organ.

Some find that they are within the audible sonic range (between 16 Hz and 16,000 Hz).

Others find that they fall well below this audible range or, like ultrasound, far above

it.

When the body is healthy and balanced, these vibrations are in harmony with each other.

When the body is imbalanced, it is in a state of dissonance the resonant qualities of

its constituent parts are in disharmony.

One of the most extraordinary demonstrations of the effects of sound and resonance was

conducted by a visionary Swiss doctor named Hans Jenny.

Dr. Jennys seminal work titled Cymatics (a Greek word that means wave form),

whose first volume was published in 1967, showed the effects that sound waves have upon

different types of material, including water, pastes, and other liquids.

Dr. Jenny placed these substances on a steel plate and vibrated the plate with a crystal

oscillator, which produced an exact frequency, and then he photographed the effects.

He photographed liquid plastic (a material similar to Silly Putty) that formed into an

object resembling a sea anemone, and lycopodium dust (a material similar to talcum powder)

that took on shapes resembling the cells of the body.

Some of his most amazing photos were of water, which took on astonishing geometric forms,

depending upon the vibrational frequency that was used.

Dr. Jennys work demonstrates the extraordinary power of vibration that is, sound to

create form.

While the structures and forms he created with sound were not living creatures, many

of them certainly look as though they were.

You can almost imagine that, with a divine sound coming from a sacred source, in the

beginning the Word could indeed create life.

What is equally important with regard to Dr. Jennys experiments is that the effects

are repeatable.

If you take the same substance and expose it to the same frequency that Dr. Jenny used,

you will get the same result.

This consistent structuring a certain vibration leads to a certain form is a

manifestation of resonance.

If the vibration changes, the structure changes in concert with it.

Several people have carried on Dr. Jennys work in the twenty-first century, including

Alexander Lauterwasser of Germany and John Stuart Reid of England.

The following are two photos taken by Reid showing the beautiful geometric forms that

water took on when vibrated by two diverse frequencies on a CymaScope, a device similar

to Dr. Jennys.

When you think about the fact that the human body is mostly made of water, its easy

to realize how powerful the effects of sound can be upon us.

The voice of author Jonathan Goldman rendered as a visual pattern by a CymaScope

Lets now examine two different (almost diametrically opposed) ways in which sound

can be used for healing.

Both involve the concept of resonance.

How Sound Can Heal: Method One

For this first method of healing with sound, lets visualize a healthy body like an orchestra

that is playing all together in balance and harmony.

Lets call this music the symphony of the self.

Using this metaphor of the body as an orchestra, what happens when the second violin player

loses his sheet music?

Pretty soon that violin player might begin to play the wrong notes and the wrong rhythm.

Usually, in a very short amount of time, the rest of the string section begins to sound

off.

In fact, as this dissonance develops, youll begin to notice that theres something wrong

with the entire orchestra.

It just doesnt sound right.

This is akin to a part of our body vibrating out of its healthy -resonanceits vibrating

out of tune and out of ease, and we then say that this part of our body is diseased (dis-eased).

One of the basic principles of using sound as a healing modality is to restore the part

of the body that is diseased back into a state of healthy resonance.

It is very much like getting the sheet music back to that string player.

It seems appropriate at this time to honor Dr. Peter Guy Manners, one of Jonathans

mentors and one of the great pioneers in the field of sound therapy.

Dr. Manners passed away at the turn of this century, but he had been engaged in the research

and practice of sound healing since the 1950s.

His work focused on finding the correct frequencies to restore healthy resonance to different

parts of the body for different conditions.

He created the Cymatic Instrument (now known by other names), which had the ability

to project over six hundred different combinations of frequencies (which he called commutations)

in order to strengthen an imbalanced portion of our anatomy.

Due to some legal issues, his work (and his instrument) was not as well known at the time

as it perhaps could have been.

However, today trained practitioners in the field of sound healing readily employ numerous

devices based upon the work of Dr. Manners, with remarkable healing benefit.

Although we have been introduced to many different types of instruments designed for sound healing,

our preferred instrument is one that doesnt require electricity or batteries, has an owners

manual thats really simple to use, and is free.

This instrument is, of course, our own voice.

And its what weve been teaching for dozens of years.

Please note: we are not talking about using the voice in a musical fashion such as singingthats

entertainment.

Were not talking about getting up in front of an audience and singing Strangers in

the Night or whatever song turns you on.

Here, in relation to sound specifically utilized for healing, were talking about the concept

of entrainment.

The term entrainment comes from physics, and it describes the way in which the vibrations

of one object can affect the vibrations of another object.

Through entrainment, we can synchronize or harmonize one vibration with another.

For example, we can use our own voice to vocalize a tone through humming that can entrain vibrations

in other parts of our bodies, bringing them into a state of balance.

There are many ways to use entrainment for sound healing.

At a basic level, you can use vibration humming to restore the natural resonance of an

organ or system.

When an organ begins to vibrate out of its natural frequency, its energy becomes blocked.

The organ then becomes vulnerable to potential imbalances deterioration, disease, viruses,

bacteria, and so on.

When we reinforce its natural frequency, the organs resonance is restored, it regains

its energy, the intruder energy that was causing damage ceases to exist, and the organ is restored

to health.

You might also use different rhythms to influence bodily pulses, such as our heartbeat, respiration,

and brainwaves.

Or you can use sounds that are slightly out of tune, called beat frequencies, which

can be applied in a specific manner to influence brain waves.

We will discuss some of these uses of entrainment later in this book.

How Sound Can Heal: Method Two

With this second method, sound is used in an opposite manner.

Instead of focusing on the organ and reinforcing its healthy, natural vibratory state, this

method focuses on the intruder that pathogen or energy that is causing harm to the organ.

You can find videos of people shattering wine glasses with their voices on YouTube.

Even such reputable shows as the Discovery Channels MythBusters have recorded the

phenomenon.

When a singer is able to match the resonance of the wine glass with his or her voice with

great amplitude (volume), the glass begins to vibrate and ultimately shatters.

This ability of sound to disintegrate matter has been known for a long time.

Remember the story of Joshua and the walls of Jericho in the Old Testament?

Joshua and his men blew horns and gave a great shout and the walls crumbled.

With sufficient amplitude, sound is powerful enough to cause any object to shatter when

its resonant frequency matches that of the object.

This second approach to sound healing focuses on using sound to disintegrate whatever pathogen,

malignancy, or energy is causing harm to the body.

In the early 1930s, a scientist named Royal Rife invented an instrument that was said

to be able to shatter cancer cells and their pathogenic precursors (he believed that all

cancers were caused by bacteria and/or viruses) with high-frequency vibrations.

He developed a microscope that allowed him to observe these pathogens, and then he worked

with high-frequency vibrations to find the correct frequencies for destroying them.

Whether his treatment of those with cancer still holds true or not, his work with high-frequency

sound was incredible.

Recently, we were sent a link to a video for a TEDx Talk by Professor Anthony Holland,

a musician-scientist at Skidmore College, discussing his work shattering cancer cells

and bacteria with high-frequency vibrations.

Among other things, the video has some astonishing visuals of this phenomenon occurring.* It

truly demonstrates the power of sound to heal.

Many of us are familiar with the use of high-frequency sound, called ultrasound, to construct images

of babies in utero.

These ultrasonic frequencies are also often used to disintegrate kidney stones.

The possibilities dont stop there.

For example, Jeff Elias, M.D., of the University of Virginias medical school is using ultrasound

to treat Parkinson-like tremors.

We first heard of his work on the national nightly news.

Dr. Elias was treating an elderly woman with such bad shaking from tremors that she could

not write her name with any sort of legibility.

Using an fMRI to view her brain, Dr. Elias trained a beam of highly focused sound energy

on the area of the brain where damage had occurred.

The procedure lasted less than a minute.

About ten minutes later, the woman was asked to sign her name, and her script was lovely

and legible.

Any surgery to address the womans tremors would have been extensive, and recovery would

have taken close to six months.

In contrast, the ultrasound treatment was brief and noninvasive, and the womans recovery

time was almost instantaneous.

It was astonishing.

The reporter covering the story asked Dr. Elias what other conditions might be treated

with sound.

He suggested that there were many different possibilities.

What is perhaps most significant about the work of Professor Holland and Dr. Elias is

that it has been filmed, which vividly validates the power of sound to heal and transform.

Celebrities Who Surprisingly Decided To Bare It All - Duration: 7:00.

For certain celebrities, being is just part of the job.

Actors and models pose for racy ad campaigns all the time, perform love scenes in the buff,

and strip down for music videos and sexy magazine spreads.

And while celebrity skin is mostly used to titillate, sometimes stars will use the eye-popping

power of their birthday suit to bring attention to a good cause.

Those are the A-listers we're featuring here, along with the real reasons these famous folks

bared it all.

Demi Lovato

As a champion for body positivity, Demi Lovato has been open about her struggles with eating

disorders and addictions, and she now frequently speaks out about the importance of accepting

one's body.

In a September 2015 interview with People, the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer said,

"It's important for me to show people you can go from hating yourself, to loving yourself

and being proud of your body and the skin you're in."

A few weeks later, Lovato asked Vanity Fair photographer Patrick Ecclesine to shoot her

in an impromptu, make-up free, and un-retouched session.

For Lovato, it was an important moment, and one that coincided with the release of her

album, Confident, which she said, quote, "finally represents who I really am."

Lovato continued,

"It's empowering and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can

overcome the the obstacles of body image issues."

"...you can feel confident in your own skin."

Adam Levine

Maroon 5 crooner and The Voice star Adam Levine is no stranger to racy performances, like

his raunchy turn in the 2014 video for Maroon 5's song "Animals", which sparked a controversy

with the sexual assault support group, RAINN, who described it as "dangerous depiction of

a stalker's fantasy."

But long before Levine got in the buff on behalf of the band, he did it for a good cause:

the Britain-based testicular and prostate cancer awareness charity, Everyman.

Shot for Cosmo UK, Levine appeared, sans clothes, with only his girlfriend's hands covering

up the goods.

Gillian Anderson

As an active PETA supporter, X-Files star Gillian Anderson has appeared in many ad campaigns

for the activist group, and she's personally reached out to governments around the world

to protest alleged animal abuses.

In 2013, Anderson also partnered with an organization called Fishlove, which strives to raise awareness

about unsustainable and destructive fishing practices.

Anderson, and many other celebs, stripped bare and posed with striking creatures from

the deep.

Anderson's portrait, in particular, looks to have taken an insane amount of guts as

she appears topless with a monstrous conger eel draped over her shoulders.

Other stars who have posed for Fishlove include Helena Bonham Carter, Dougray Scott, Ben Kingsley,

and Gotham's Sean Pertwee.

Laverne Cox

Actress Laverne Cox has been on the forefront of transgender issues since her breakout role

in Orange Is The New Black.

Since then, she's been a powerful advocate for advancing transgender narratives in media,

also starring as the first actual transgendered woman to star as a transgendered woman on

a broadcast series in the CBS drama, Doubt.

When Allure approached Cox to appear in their annual spread of celebrity portraits, she

was hesitant, but eventually came around, saying,

"Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might

be inspiring to some other folks."

Cox spoke with Access Hollywood about the shoot, adding that she did it for personal

reasons as well.

"...part of it was, for me, celebrating this time in my life.

Celebrating my body."

"And I like to foreground my intelligence and talent, but our bodies matter too.

And loving and accepting our bodies is really important."

David Cross

Comedian and actor David Cross approaches his activism with humor, even if veers off

in a dark direction.

In a behind-the-scenes interview for his shoot for PETA's "Rather Go Than Wear Fur" campaign,

Cross got serious about what he views as the outdated practice of skinning animals to make

clothing out of their fur.

"I see absolutely no reason to skin an animal and use its fur.

It's completely unnecessary."

"But we've evolved, we have science and technology you don't have to have fur."

Mel B

Spice Girl Mel B recreated Janet Jackson's iconic Rolling Stone cover in her pictorial

for the breast cancer awareness charity, CoppaFeel.

Like Adam Levine, Mel B also relied on Cosmo UK to shoot a risqué, yet high fashion photo,

while promoting an important message in the process.

Speaking with the mag, Mel B described a scary personal story that inspired her to get involved

with the charity, saying,

"I found a lump when I was 17 and freaked out."

"It turned out it was nothing, but it terrified me.

Ever since, I've always been one for checking, then double checking."

Ashley Tisdale

Former Disney starlet Ashley Tisdale is another actress who decided to strip down for Allure's

celebrity portraits in 2011, and while she told the magazine that she uses a grueling

workout schedule to maintain her figure, the shoot was more of a rite of passage than it

was about showing off, saying,

"I'm 25, almost 26, but people think of me as much younger because I look young."

"Being in this shoot was me saying, 'I'm not just the young girl everybody thinks I am.

I'm actually a woman.'"

A year after the birthday suit shoot, she appeared in a few episodes of Sons of Anarchy

as an escort, and her next risque role wouldn't come for another four years when she played

a stripper in the forgettable Amateur Night.

For now, Tisdale is appearing in the adult animated series, Ginger Snaps on ABCd, the

digital arm of the Disney-owned network, so it seems Tisdale still hasn't really strayed

far from home after all.

Dennis Rodman

Basketball superstar Dennis Rodman was both the first man, and the first athlete to participate

in PETA's "Rather Go Than Wear Fur" campaign.

Featured in their "Ink Not Mink" series, Rodman told PETA that his animal activism was inspired

by a short video Pamela Anderson made, which exposed the practices of the fur industry,

saying,

"If you actually look at [the video] firsthand, it gives you a different perspective on animals

and how they're treated."

His PETA appearance certainly wasn't Rodman's first rodeo.

In 1995, Rodman famously went for Sports Illustrated.

Other stars appearing in PETA's Ink Not Mink campaign included Dave Navarro, Chad Ochocinco,

and Steve-O.

Katy Perry

As an outspoken supporter of Hillary Clinton throughout the 2016 presidential election,

Katy Perry worked for over a year on the former Secretary of State's campaign.

According to The Telegraph, Perry even went so far as to knock on doors to drum up support

for her candidate, as well as perform rally concerts right up until election night.

She also partnered with Funny Or Die for a get-out-the-vote video in which she encouraged

people to get out to the polls looking however they do when they roll out of bed.

For Perry, that's so she cleverly claimed.

The video drove nearly five million sets of eyeballs to her cause.

"I know that I have the right to vote."

"Did you read it?

Or briefly scan it?"

In today's video I want to show you...

how to make some sandwiches from Guatemala.

They are called "Shucos"!

Shucos in English would be translated to "Dirty"

Good!

They're more similar to hot dogs, just Guatemalan Style!

We are gonna need...

Bolillo bread (french bread)

we are gonna need shredded cabbage,

the weiners!

If you don't like the spicy ones, you can use the regular weiners.

Whichever you prefer.

We are also gonna use avocado

Mayo, Ketchup & Mustard...

To start off I will show you...

just how easy they are to make, and they're delicious!

The cabbage will soaked in boiling water...

for a short amount of time.

It doesn't have to be cooked, just soaked.

then, we just drain the water and let it cool.

Once it cools, we'll add vinegar, salt & pepper and onions!

& if you want to add some chili peppers, you can do that as well.

if you like it spicy.

Now I'm gonna make the guacamole!

Now for the cabbage...

I'm gonna add a little vinegar.

just enough to give it that vinegary taste.

I don't really measure the amounts so we just calculate =]

I decided to upgrade the shuco to a Mega Shuco!

We'll see how this goes...

I'll be back in a few to check on this...

So lets see...

I'm gonna flip the meat

This is coming out sooooo good!!

Now we're gonna put the wieners on the grill...

The wieners are cooking nicely.

The meat is ready!

Look how delicious it is!

This is gonna be soooo good!

The secret to these "Shucos" is...

the bread! French Bread!

We have to toast it to have that warm crunchiness.

If you don't want to throw it on the grill...

you can also use your toaster.

The important thing is to have it warm and toasty.

Okay, so the bread is ready.

the meat and wieners are ready.

so lets do this!!!

Mayonaise,

the meat, (carne asada)

& the wieners!

I'm using the original sausage because I don't like it spicy.

& now we're gonna put the guacamole

now the cabbage!

now we put the mustard,

and then the ketchup!

This looks so delicious!!

Now we're gonna close it & cut it!

This is the Mega Shuco!

Bon Appetit!!

U S REGULATORS AND BLOCKCHAIN ADVOCATES TO DISCUSS ICO IMPLICAT - Duration: 3:33.

U.S. REGULATORS AND BLOCKCHAIN ADVOCATES TO DISCUSS ICO IMPLICATIONS ON OCTOBER 12

BITCOIN NEWS The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

(SEC) declared this summer that initial coin offering (ICO) tokens were subject to federal

securities laws.

Just recently, the regulatory agency announced that it would hold an investor advisory committee

meeting on October 12 to discuss the implications of blockchain technology for securities markets

THE SECS INVESTOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE PLANS TO DISCUSS THE IMPLICATIONS OF ICOS

U.S. Regulators and Blockchain Advocates Plan to Discuss ICO ImplicationsIn two weeks, the

SEC intends to hold a committee meetingto discuss blockchains and initial coin offerings

(ICOs).

The meeting will be held at the SECs headquarters in Washington D.C. and will be open to the

public.

In addition to the discussion, the organization has added two new members to the investor

advisory committee; Allison Bennington and Mina Nguyen.

The committee was established through Section 911 of the Dodd-Frank Act and has nineteen

members.

Agenda: October 12, 2017, a meeting of the Securities and Exchange Commissions

Investor Advisory Committee, explains the SEC announcement.

Discussion regarding blockchain and other distributed ledger technology and implications

for securities markets.

SECS PRIOR WARNINGS The meeting this October follows the regulators

recent warnings about ICOs and startups selling ERC-20 tokens.

This year, the ICO market has raised billions so far despite having any regulatory infrastructure.

Three weeks ago, the SEC agency warned of ICO schemes again and forced four firms to

shut down token sale operations.

The regulator even called the crowd sales pump-and-dump, and market manipulation

schemes. Additionally, the SEC chairman, Jay Clayton, explained during a panel discussion

this month that ICO investors dont truly understand the risks involved with token sales.

THE MEETINGS PARTICIPANTS WILL INCLUDE BLOCKCHAIN ADVOCATES

The meeting will include a few speakers from other regulatory departments and the blockchain

industry.

This includes the former financial tech advisor at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission

(CFTC), Jeff Bandman; the president of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC),

Michael Bodson; the co-founder of the blockchain company Chain, Adam Ludwin; and a representative

from Nasdaq.

Ludwin has presented blockchain topics to U.S. congressional leaders and members of

the Federal Reserve in the past.

The SECs meeting in October should bring more light to how U.S. regulators perceive

the nascent ICO industry and how they plan to protect investors and apply legislation

to these popular token sales.

How do you think the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will handle ICOs?
