Hello guys
In this video we're going to go over one of the tools for Unity that we at EpixVR find
indispensable for mobile development, and that tool is the Unity Remote App.
So what is the Unity Remote App and what is it useful for?
If you've ever developed any applications for a mobile platform, you know how slow and
frustrating the development process can be, because you're developing on one platform
and then deploying to another.
Anytime you make a change, whether to your code or art assets, your whole project needs
to be rebuilt, packaged, compressed, and then redeployed to your testing device before you
can see any effect.
On a typical day you'll be doing this tens or hundreds of times, so this can obviously
add a lot of friction to your development workflow, which can discourage you from taking
an iterative approach to development and encourage you to make more monolithic changes, and that
in turn can lead to more debugging time and more friction.
So to get around this, one of the first things we can use is an emulator that runs inside
our development machine to make the development process faster.
In Unity you can do that with Visual Studio's Android Emulator on Windows, but you can't
do that on macOS, so you can only do it on one platform.
This is where the UnityRemote app comes in.
The way that UnityRemote works is that instead of you having to rebuild your project every
time you make a change and wait for it to deploy to your testing device, Unity instead
sends a frame-by-frame screenshot of your game to the target device, so that you don't
need to compile anything and can see your game running instantaneously.
On top of that, Unity will also read any input from the device such as gestures or taps and
send it back to your game.
So you get an app that shows you your game running while you can also use any input mechanisms
you've registered to see how your game plays out.
Let's download a sample application for Unity and run it with the UnityRemote app
to see what this will look like.
So the first thing we need to do is download the app to our phone.
You can find the links for the app on Google Play Store and Apple App Store in the video
description.
Once you have that installed, run it and make sure it's running correctly.
It's going to give you a message saying "Connect this device with a USB cable to
your computer.
Press PLAY in the Unity Editor to test."
There's two ways UnityRemote can connect to your computer, either through USB or by
being on the same WiFi network.
Obviously if you can use USB that will be the faster and more stable connection.
So I've created an empty Unity project and added the Tower Defense Template package from
the Unity Asset Store.
It's basically a mobile-optimized demo game you can use as a template, which also has
some tutorials you can go through.
So let's run it using the Unity Remote app to see how it works on your device.
Once we have the package installed, we're going to go to 'Scene->MainMenu'.
This is the main scene we're going to run.
If we run the Unity Remote app now, we're not going to see anything, and that's because
we still need to do some configuration inside the editor.
Let's go to 'Edit->ProjectSettings->Editor.'
Over here we have a few settings specifically for the Unity Remote app.
The first one is 'Device.'
We can choose between any Android or iOS device, or a specific device.
You can only connect to one device at the same time, but you can have multiple devices
connected and switch between them.
Since we're testing on iOS, let's choose 'Any iOS Device.'
Next we can specify the compression algorithm.
The two options are JPEG and PNG.
JPEG uses lossy compression, so it trades higher speed for lower quality.
Since we're connected through USB cable, we can choose the higher quality option (PNG),
and it should run fine.
Next option is resolution.
Resolution can be downsized in order to run compression faster, because the thing that
Unity Remote does is take a screenshot of your game every frame and send it over USB
in order to simulate running the game on a device.
If we can get our resolution to run on 'Normal' without any frame rate hiccups, then we should
go for the highest resolution possible.
Finally we have the 'Joystick Source,' which is the input source.
We can either use our phone for input, so we can detect gestures and taps, or we can
use our local computer.
If we're developing for mobile, presumably our application has been optimized for mobile,
so we can go with the 'Remote' option.
That's it for the Unity Remote settings.
Now we can go ahead and hit play, and this time we're going to see the game run on
our phone.
If you hold your phone in portrait mode, the resolution is going to look weird.
So it's better to hold it in landscape.
Now we can go ahead and try it out.
As you can see, the frame rate is a little slow.
The thing you need to remember, and this is mentioned in the documentation, is that using
the Unity Remote app is not an accurate representation of your real game.
It won't reflect the real performance of the game on a mobile device, because Unity
Remote is running the game on the computer and not the device itself.
So you always need to run on your actual device from time to time to make sure everything
is working properly.
