Here we are with fellow bike travellers
that I've met on the road
what's your name?
Maria
Ulises
nationality?
Spanish
Mexican
where did you start travelling from?
Mexico
what's your itinerary?
we started in Bogota [Colombia]
then we got to Venezuela
we travelled around Venezuela for a month and half
then we crossed into Colombia from La Guajira border
we're now in Colombia and plan to get to Ecuador next
after Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina
and the go back up: Uruguay, Paraguay, Brasil
Central America y finally Mexico
at the beginning the plan was to cycle through south america
now we extended the plan to central america on our way back
before starting travelling did you save money?
we have save some money for a future trip and those fund we dont want to use them right now
so we're trying to make money while travelling making belts recycling used bike tires
yes, actually our saving were about 50US$
personally that's what I've saved
and that's what I keep aside for any emergency I might have
but travelling you realise you can actually support the trip with funds you gather selling those artisan things to make or simply doing some work
specifically what artisan products do you guys make?
we make belts recycling used bike tires
and that's how we support our travelling
is there anything else you use to support your trip for example how to find accommodation or food?
Yes we do. we camp a lot and usually ask houses or farms permission to camp outside their properties
or we simply wild camp in nature
we ask food collaboration to restaurants when they are about to close
at noon as well we ask if they can collaborate with some food
as well here in Colombia when we ask to camp outside some house usually they also invite us for a bit of food
people are lovely and usually offer us dinner and breakfast
what's your daily budget, an average spending in a given day
how much we spend?
there are lots of days we dont spend anything
there are other days where we might need to buy bike spare parts or something like that
we could be spending, I dont know...1UD$ ?
an average expenditure of 1US$ per day then
how much did your bike cost?
both bikes cost 300US$
300USD$ each?
less. with the dollar/peso exchange he gets confused!
about 150US$ each
300US$ for both of them?
yes for both.
do you have a word or suggestion
for someone that is thinking about travelling by bike
but he/she is a bit fearful or doesnt have any money or time
I think the most difficult part is when someone is trying to start the journey
once you start you realize that the life on the road is actually pretty easy
that one's needs less things to live and to live well and live happy
as well as during the trip one's goes leaving fears behind and those deterrents that are only living in one's mind
in our brains, and that we can overcome them little by litte
what's something you've learnt travelling?
it could be a skill or mental development or spiritual
that one's can do more than he/she thinks
that life isnt complicated and it's all very simple
and that one's can do whatever
travelling is nothing but monotonous
you're constantly learning from when you wake up till when you go to sleep
everything you do is learning. it could be learning how to cook, some thoughts that someone is sharing
you're always always learning
the landscapes you see, the animals you meet
you never get tired of learning in the trip
a final greeting for the people that are watching us
Cheer up and whenever you decide to travel by bike
know that you only need your legs and a bike nothing else
or just your legs even.
Find enjoyment in the game of travelling!
Thank you to our friends Ulises & Maria. Safe Travels!
Ciao! Chao!
