Waching daily Jun 23 2018

And that's when Vamprah returned for the 2nd time, or maybe it was the 3rd time, it kind of runs together at this point.

Wow! I can't believe all the stories are true.

How did you survive such treachery?

A lot of luck and a bit of smarts. Oh, and guns, lots of guns.

Speaking of guns, I was watching the combat training between you and Striker...

Wasn't that awesome?

Uhh......no I was not impressed

Oh.

You've got an entire armory filled with. Impressive weapons just sitting here collecting dust.

Yeah, well we don't exactly know how to use them.

We kind of just take from Regalius just to take.

Well dental bots I believe a crash course in weapons training is in order.

Hm..

ahhhh...

Let's roll out

Hmm the snow is messing with the thermal scanner.

All units, keep an eye out for Striker.

What are you doing here?

The high lord requested I supervise you.

and if need be provide support.

Supervise? The floor? You think I need the help of maggots?

Be gone with you....your presence irritates me.

(groans)

You're late.

Last I checked there was five minutes left on the clock.

I have been waiting a long time for this.

My Lord Striker, has made his appearance

Of course he did.... keep me posted.

Yes my Lord.

STRIKER

Get out here, and fight me ....you coward

I'm right here.

Oh no you don't.

Echelon one, this is perimeter guard... what's your status?

All clear nothing to report, over.

Hold on!

ahhhhh!

Hello there.

How to Avoid Burnout - Duration: 6:37.

Are you a workhorse,

or are you a race horse?

When it comes to how to avoid

burnout

Productivity Problem Number Six is mental fatigue and burnout.

What does that mean?

I'm Nicole Wipp

and this is Healthy Success 101 where Smart Success is all

about avoiding the burnout

and the overwhelm.

Alright, mental fatigue

and burnout.

Absolutely,

probably one of the biggest enemies

that we have to success.

And yet, it's endemic everywhere.

I mean, if you read any

kind of business journal,

burnout and fatigue are probably

two of the main problems

that everybody faces

in business.

So,

why is this happening?

One of the reasons that

I think it happens is partly

because of that question I asked you at the beginning of

this video, which is,

"Are you a work horse

or are you a racehorse?" What do

I mean by that?

Well, if you think about it one of the

questions that,

you know, I always ask people is imagine

if you went out

and bought a million dollar

racehorse...

How would you treat that horse

when you brought it home?

Would you

run it around the track 'till it

collapsed from fatigue?

Would you feed it crappy food

and keep it up all night?

Would you beat it

and make it feel bad about

itself?

I mean, what would you do

to that horse?

No, You wouldn't do those things to a million

dollar racehorse.

What you would do if you bought a million dollar

race horses you would bring it home,

you'd make sure that its environment

was optimal for its success.

You would give it great food.

You would make sure it had good exercise.

You'd make sure it got the best training

and the best trainers

for it, so that it could be mentally

healthy and at the top of its game.

That's what you would do

with this million dollar racehorse.

So, if you think about it,

are you treating yourself

like that million dollar racehorse

or you treat yourself like a work horse?

And what I know is,

especially if you're an entrepreneur,

or any other really successful

kind of person, if you are ambitious

and you are trying to make things happen,

you're probably treating yourself

more like the workhorse than the racehorse.

And so, think about it.

You could not possibly

expect a million dollar

racehorse to operate at

a million dollar level

if you treated it like a workhorse.

How can you expect anything different

from yourself?

Right? And so,

I really want you to start thinking

about this.

How are you going to change

that dynamic around

and really think of yourself in this way?

I need to treat myself

like a million dollar racehorse instead

of like a workhorse in order to get

the expected result.

We wouldn't do it to a creature,

you know we won't, and we shouldn't be doing it to

ourselves.

The next part about this is really,

and this sort of goes along

with that concept,

is having a tolerance for

unacceptable people

and things

in our lives

and in our businesses. So,

one of the things that happens to so many

of us is that we,

in order to have a really good productivity,

we forget that when we

tolerate unacceptable people

and things in our businesses,

what happens is,

or in our lives,

that those things are chipping away

at our productivity.

And so,

examples of this are having team members that really we

dread working

with on a day to day basis,

or vendors,

or even clients that we

really dislike.

We dread working

with them. They give us a headache.

They us ulcers.

You know, all of these kinds of things,

and those type of scenarios

are really ones where

your productivity can't possibly

be at its peak level

because when you tolerate unacceptable

people and things in your

life,

you just can't focus on

the things that are moving you ahead.

What's happening is your attention is being pulled to those

things and it's being pulled toward this

sort of negative cycle that we

get into when we have unacceptable people

and things in our lives.

So, it's really a massive part

of our productivity.

So, you know especially

I do a lot of

work with high performing

female entrepreneurs

and high performing females

in business,

and I will,

I'm saying this directly to you ladies,

that if this is one of your things,

unacceptable people

and things, that's really something that you

want to start working on right away

because I know for you

this happens to be one of the biggest challenges

that you face.

And then, the other one is just simply

you know if you feel like you have the weight

of the world on your shoulders,

it's really because you probably do.

If you feel like you're pulling around

500 weight behind you.

It's probably because you are.

Because these types of things,

the way we treat ourselves,

workhorse versus racehorse, tolerances

for unacceptable people or things,

these are things that make us feel like

the weight of the world is on our shoulders

and that we're dragging around that 500

pound weight,

but the reality of the matter is

that you can't have maximum productivity

if that's how you feel.

So, let's change this dynamic,

start treating ourselves like that million

dollar racehorse and then the results

will follow.

I promise you.

Now,

we are at the end of

the six major productivity problems,

but the best is yet to come

because I'm going to be sharing

with you in this next video,

My nine quick

fixes for these productivity

problems,

and while you can't

implement all nine of them at once,

for most of you that's going to be impossible.

These are things that are pretty easy

that once you pay attention to them

and you get them done,

you can see massive gains

in your productivity.

So, come on out

and watch that video

with me next.

The world was new

Something true

The thrill of youth

We were proof

Strobe lit rooms and dirty bars

Spending nights inside our cars

We Got a TV Show! | HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT - Duration: 4:49.

What is up ladies and gentlemen?

Welcome back to the channel.

Today we have a very big announcement to make.....

something that we have been working towards for over five years.....

We have just received the great news that we are going

to be hosting our fist travel television show.

The show is called Budget versus Baller,

and it's going to be airing on the newly launched Tastemade channel on YouTube TV.

We founded this channel way back in 2012

as basically a resume to pitch travel television show concepts.

It feels very rewarding for us to come full circle

and finally get the opportunity to host our own travel show on a

dynamic platform like YouTube TV.

But we would not be here without the continued support of you,

all of the Vagabuddies out there.

Thank you so much.

We did this together.

For those of you who don't know what YouTube TV is,

it's a cutting-edge new platform

for those of you who want a couple of your favorite television channels

combined with the best of digital content.

Right now it's only available in the United States

where for $40 a month you get 50 + channels

including CNN, ESPN and tons of other major television networks

YouTube TV also recently added three

digital first networks, including Cheddar,

The Young Turks, and our partner Tastemade.

Tastemade is launching a ton of cool original programs over the course of 2018,

including our show Budget Versus Baller.

We could not be more excited to partner with Tastemade.

We've worked with them numerous times in the past,

and Tastemade has a lot in common with our style of travel and exploration.

We can't wait to see where this collaboration takes us.

The concept of Budget vs Baller is very simple:

Alex and I get to a new city;

we have a brief round of trivia.

Then one of us wins a baller budget

while the other has to get by on a shoestring.

We're going to be on the road for the next six weeks

filming in Europe, Asia, and North America.

The show will premiere on Tastemade in September,

and the episodes will be a full thirty minutes long.

This summer we'll be very focused on filming Budget versus Baller,

but we're going to do our best to keep weekly content

coming at you here on the YouTube channel all summer long.

So we appreciate your patience as we work towards completing a goal

that we've had for a very, very long time.

To do that we're going to do our best to create content while we're on the road,

and we're also going to be doing a lot of live streams,

both on Instagram and on YouTube.

Additionally, we're rolling out two concepts that we're really excited about:

Before- You- Go Guides and Virtual Vacations.

Before- You- Go Guides is everything we think you need to know

about a destination before you go,

from the cost of a visa to must-try foods and cultural do's and don't's.

Tell us in the comments section what info you're dying to know before you go, and we'll do our best

to incorporate that in future videos.

Virtual vacations is our take on slow TV.

We've combined our favorite drone, gimbal, and cinematic footage with sound effects and great music

for 15 to 30 minute visual vacations that are going to take you to paradise.

Whether it's playing in the background at work or on the big screen at home,

get comfortable.

Maybe crack a beer or pour yourself a glass of wine,

and get ready to get taken away.

If you want to stay up to date with the latest dispatches from the road

and get sneak peeks behind the scenes of Budget vs Baller,

make sure that you're following us on Instagram@Vagabrothers

and our personal accounts @Markoayling and @ alexthevagabond.

To sum it up, we're going to be on the road until early August,

and the show will premiere shortly thereafter in early September.

We're already in destination number one.

So go over to Instagram to find out where that is and use the hashtag

#Budget vs. Baller or #BVB to keep the conversation going online.

In the mean time, make sure that you have notifications enabled on Instagram and here on YouTube

so you never miss when we go live, publish a new video, or post a new photo.

In short, we're stoked!

We're going to go to some amazing places this summer.

So in the meantime, stay curious, keep exploring,

and we'll see you on the road.

Peace.

I Tried To Re-Create These Corgi Macarons - Duration: 11:34.

- Okay, so, here we are.

This is Eating Your Feed, my name is Niki.

Today my friend Adam is challenging me to make macarons

shaped as corgis.

It's this shop called Honey & Butter in Irvine, California

that makes a bunch of different types of macarons,

one of them is this thing called a uni-corgi.

A uni-corgi is a corgi with a unicorn horn.

It looks really easy based off of the video

'cause it shows her just like piping the shape

of a corgi and then they fill it with what looks like

a chocolatey filling and they kind of just

pop it right on top.

Everyone loves a macaron.

Never made macarons and I've never made any type of food

in the shape of an animal before.

As always today, very talented,

Tasty chef producer Rie is here.

How hard is it really?

- In my opinion,

it's one of the most difficult design to make.

So, you just need to practice.

- The feet of a macaron is when the cookie rises

and so that's like an important mark of a macaron.

So, if you don't have feet, that's a bad macaron.

Great.

If I struggle, I'll give you a call.

- Okay. - I found a Tasty recipe,

I'm gonna just make regular circular macarons first

and then if that goes well,

I will graduate to the uni-corgi.

Look out world.

What if I'm so good at this?

So, I printed out a template,

I've seen other people use it when they pipe it out

so that it's relatively the same size and shape.

So, ,that's underneath a piece of baking paper.

200 grams of powdered sugar,

110 grams of almond flour,

100 grams of egg whites.

Shabam.

Stripe city, population me.

50 grams of sugar for my meringue.

Big bowl.

An important thing is that the almond flour

and the powdered sugar are as fine as possible.

So, the way people do that is to throw it in

the food processor.

(laughing)

What am I doing wrong?

There we go.

Oh yeah, this (bleeping) gonna be fine.

So, I'm gonna make my meringue

which is like the base for this cookie.

A little splootsch of tartar.

And then I'm just gonna whip 'em.

That will give us the firmness and structure

for this light and fluffy cookie.

What a weird thing.

These things come out of chickens.

Oh, that looks pretty stiff.

Oh, what's that thing?

I'm really scared to do this.

- What are you doing? - If you can like

lift it over your head and it doesn't come out

that means it's ready, right?

I could really (beeping) myself over this morning.

Whew.

And I guess that just all of it, it all goes in.

We're not going any food coloring,

these are just gonna be plain macarons.

And now we fold.

Don't over mix, don't under mix.

We wanna get it to like a ribbony consistency

so that it is fluidy, it like holds it shape.

Wow, these were very stiff peaks.

I'm gonna go a little bit more.

Yeah, that's kind of innate.

I'm gonna stop mixing, I think we got it.

So, I'm gonna be baking with a convection oven

which like blows hot air throughout

and so you don't want any paper flapping back and forth

so I'm jus using a little bit of the batter

that kind of like spilled over

and I'm putting it on the corner of my baking paper

so that it stays down.

I don't have much experience piping

but when I was like a kid and watching people bake,

it was always like the most appealing part of it.

Oh, it's coming out.

Was I not supposed to cut the bag until the stuff was in?

(beeping)

(groaning)

These look relatively close to each other.

Okay.

There's like a tapping thing that I have to do

to kind of get rid of all of these little air bubbles

that you can see.

(tapping)

So, now I have to let it rest for like 30 minutes.

I don't know why.

So, what we wanna check is that there's like a smooth film

that has created on the top layer so when I touch it

it shouldn't like indent.

Oh yeah, pretty solid.

285 for about 15 minutes.

Oh, man, it's flapping.

Okay, so, it's been 15 minutes,

I'm gonna take them out now.

So, they do have feet but it's little.

Okay.

So, these are cooled.

Ooh, they're sticking a little.

Yeah, they're a little under done.

Good, huh? - Yep.

- So, I'm gonna try regular macarons again

because the consistency of these,

there's no way I would've been able to pipe a corgi.

Attempt number two.

I think the recipe was spot on,

I don't think I need to change a whole lot there.

It was just really the mixing and the bake time.

No, it does go this way.

How did I do, what's happening?

(soft music)

We're stiff.

Ready to sift in the flour and sugar.

So, I've got red and yellow food coloring

to make, hopefully an orangy corgi color.

Why do they look so different?

What the...

I am being tested.

This is weird.

Are we sure this is foo coloring?

Looks like icing, right? - Yeah, this is just icing.

(beeping)

- I found orange.

Wow, a little bit of that stuff goes a long way.

It's a little thick still

but here's where I gotta be real careful.

I'm gonna stop, all right.

Ooh, I'm making a mess.

This already looks better.

Okay, definitely more pippable.

(tapping)

Those are gonna set for 30 minutes.

I have batter left over,

should I try making shapes?

I'm an expert.

So, the corgi kind of had a biggest head.

So, he's kind of got a funky ear.

All corgis are different.

Oh, what a disaster.

I also think my orange is a little too pale.

We are making improvements.

Okay, let's go.

All right.

So, we have feet,

we got nice round edges.

I think I definitely got more of a rise out of these.

I think I still over mixed which is crazy.

I definitely need more orange.

These corgis are pretty pale,

this is like human flesh color.

I think I'm gonna make a filling.

I think what I'm gonna do is a ganache

and I learned how to make the ganache

when I make the crepe cake.

Bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop.

(groaning)

I'm gonna do a one to one ratio of a chocolate to a cream.

Cool.

Oh.

Hot cream over chocolate

and then that's going to sit for about 30 seconds

and then I'm gonna mix it.

I think it's gonna thicken as it cools.

Get it to room temperature and then I'll...

All right, oh no.

The whole bottom came out.

That does not look half bad.

Not delicate at all.

I don't know if it's like I haven't let them cool enough.

Yeah, I don't know what it is.

- It's under bake.

After you bake, peel one.

If it stick in the paper, that is under bake.

- But these feet are better, right?

- Mhm. - My ganache's too wet.

- Did you put it in the refrigerator?

- No.

- Maybe that's why.

- Day two, macarons.

So, Rie said my last batch where under baked,

so I gotta do a better job getting them baked properly.

I also realize that these are like gluten free,

dairy free cookies.

200 grams powdered sugar,

110 grams (grumbling).

Super fine.

We are not going to over mix this.

Shoul I try counting?

One, two, three, four, five.

Okay, we wanna do a little more than I did last time.

11.

12.

24, 25.

35 feels good.

My instinct is to go a little bit more

but I think that's what I did last time.

This is it.

This is definitely more orange than last time.

I'm gonna continue to make the little circle cookies here

just to make sure I can get a good bake on them

and then whatever leftover batter I have,

I'll practice some piping corgis.

(tapping)

All right, so the batter is gonna set

and then we'll be ready to bake

and I think the corgis are gonna have to bake longer

than the little ones.

Pretty stable there.

Let's go, oven time.

Rie recommended taking them out

and seeing if it'll peel off relatively easy.

That means it's completely baked.

I'm gonna go test one, see where we're at.

I think it's okay.

I'm gonna let them sit and dry.

I turned the oven off, I left the macarons in there

with the door open a little bit so that it will dry out.

The ganache yesterday wasn't quite the right consistency,

so I'm gonna go for more of a buttercream,

chocolate buttercream is essentially

butter, half a tablespoon of vanilla.

Yum.

Maybe my butter should've been a little soft.

That's creamy.

More powdered sugar.

Quarter cup of cocoa powder.

So, I put in one tablespoon of milk

and just a little more, so I'm just slowly incorporating

all of the ingredients.

It tastes good and it looks like a good buttercream

and it's gonna be like a sweet heart attack.

So, it's been 30-ish minutes.

Oh ho ho, baby, yeah.

Yeah.

Let's see how these boys look.

Oh yeah.

Look at that.

Yes.

I gotta go get that buttercream

'cause I'm gonna put these on them.

This is a goopey.

Little corgi poo.

It works.

I made a sandwich cookie.

Should I give this little doggy poopey eyes?

(wheezing)

Just like the video.

These aren't perfectly shaped

but I have a top and I have a bottom.

Mm.

Now the uni-corgi.

I'm gonna make two batters:

one just orange.

Let's make some ears.

I have to make another batch now.

I need a white, black, and red.

I'm gonna try and mix it and then split it up.

Oh, (beeping).

Well, this is going to be very black.

That's okay.

Oh yeah, that's a good red.

Three colors.

Okay, I got my corgi face up.

White on the ears and a unicorn horn,

a line down the middle, nice big ol' eyeballs,

an oval for the mouth.

Not looking too bad.

Oh, it looks so cute!

All right, I got a lot of work to do.

They need their white eye dots.

My first one was definitely the best.

It really just kind of went downhill from here.

Okay, it's been roughly 30 minutes,

these corgis have set and they are ready to bake.

Look at this ear, it lifted.

We're good.

All right, putting them back into dry.

I realize that one tray is completely missing

the one white eye dot, so I really only have one tray

of viable macaron corgis.

I think we got at least one good one in there.

I think they're done and I'm gonna go get 'em.

Uni-corgi!

Man, I really hope they peel off.

Oh, yeah.

I'm really worried that bow tie

just is completely gonna break off.

And the horn.

Please don't break, please don't break, please don't break.

Ahh, I'm squishing it.

Hey.

Uni-corgi, check it out.

(squealing)

I'm really surprised actually.

All right, buttercream.

Oh.

Oh no.

I shouldn't have put it in the fridge.

Can I warm it up?

Stand by.

(soft music)

my buttercream was too cold,

I microwaved it 30 seconds and it's nice and soft.

These look like bellies.

That wasn't great.

Obviously not enough frosting on that side.

It looks like doggy poo.

I think I did so good.

One ear's way bigger than the other.

The bow tie's a little bit blobby.

But he's got a good unicorn horn

and he's got a cute face.

Let's tell Rie.

- Oh!

Did you go to the store and bought it?

- No, I didn't!

I made these.

You didn't think I could do it.

- To be honest...

(laughing)

- You can be honest now.

- I'm so surprised.

(laughing)

Can I eat it?

- Yeah, let's eat one.

- Nose to nose.

Nice, like, inside it's kinda chewy,

outside it's crispy.

- It's just so sweet.

- Oh, good. - Right?

I did so good, no one thought I could do it.

(laughing)

That's my favorite feeling.

All right, so, I figured out how to make a good macaron

and I figured out how to pipe them in the shape of corgis

and get a good bake on them.

Made a chocolate buttercream filling.

I feel, this is the closest I've ever gotten

to like nailing a video.

Took me two ays to be able to make three

that look kind of okay.

But the restaurant has like tons of these to sell

which is really, really cool.

- I think you nailed it.

Wow. - I'm gonna put this

on my resume.

I can make uni-corgi macarons.

(soft music)

- [Man] Oh, yes.

(camera shuttering)

(soft music)

Better Video Impersonations with AI | Two Minute Papers #258 - Duration: 2:33.

Dear Fellow Scholars, this is Two Minute Papers with Károly Zsolnai-Fehér.

Earlier, we talked about an amazing technique where the inputs were a source video of ourselves,

and a target actor.

And the output was a reenactment, in other words, a video of this

target actor with our facial gestures.

This requires only a few minutes of video from the target which is usually already available

on the internet.

Essentially, we can impersonate other people, at least for one video.

A key part of this new technique is that it extracts additional data such as pose and

eye positions both from the source and target videos, and uses this data for the reconstruction.

As opposed to this original Face2face technique from 2 years ago, which was already mind-blowing,

you see here that this results in a new learning-based method that supports the reenactment of eyebrows

and blinking, changing the background, plus head and gaze positioning as well.

So far, this would still be similar to a non learning-based technique we've seen a few

episodes ago.

And now, hold on to your papers, because this algorithm enables us to not only impersonate,

but also control the characters in the output video.

The results are truly mesmerizing, I almost fell out of the chair when I've first seen

them.

And what's more, we can create really rich reenactments by editing the expressions, pose,

and blinking separately by hand.

What also needs to be emphasized here is that we see and talk to other human beings all

the time, so we have a remarkably keen eye for these kinds of gestures.

If something is off by just a few millimeters or is not animated in a way that is close

to perfect, the illusion immediately falls apart.

And the magical thing about these techniques is that every single iteration we get something

that is way beyond the capabilities of the previous methods.

And they come in quick succession.

There are plenty of more comparisons in the paper as well, so make sure to have a look.

It also contains a great idea that opens up the possibility of creating quantitative evaluations

against ground truth footage.

Turns out that we can have such a thing as ground truth footage.

I wonder when we will see the first movie with this kind of reenactment of an actor

who passed away.

Do you have some other cool applications in mind?

Let me know in the comments section.

Sex and the City: Carrie, the Perfectly Imperfect Woman of Her Times - Duration: 15:30.

"I'd like a cheeseburger please, large fries, and a Cosmopolitan."

Twenty years ago, Sex and the City introduced us

to one of the most iconic TV protagonists of all time:

Carrie Bradshaw.

"I had to wonder: are we the new bachelors?"

Her character lived the fantasy of being a successful writer

who could afford a Manhattan apartment and a closet full of expensive shoes.

"I have this little substance abuse problem.

Expensive footwear."

And Carrie represented a new form of agency.

"For Carrie she was a writer too, that was the thrill of her.

She loved the idea of trying to form her life

into little short stories."

As she put her experiences into her own words,

she embodied the idea of being the writer of your own story --

going your own way.

This new vision of the empowered, self-reflective single woman in her thirties

still captivates us to this day.

"The only time we don't speak is during 'Sex and the City.'

She gets Carrie fever, but soon as the show is over

she's right back to being my soldier."

So we couldn't help but wonder... what gave Carrie that "it" factor?

And what did her popularity say about her times?

"The fact is sometimes is hard to walk in a single woman's shoes.

That's why we need really special ones now and then --

to make the walk a little more fun."

Now, back to Carrie.

Sex and the City framed Carrie as attractively flawed --

"Some flaws can be good."

"Flaws are the best part."

her shortcomings didn't make her damaged --

they gave her complexity.

And this characterization made it seem more appealing to be oneself,

with all of your flaws, than to be perfectly put together.

"I would never be the woman with the perfect hair

who can wear white and not spill on it,

and chair committees and write thank-you notes.

And I can't feel bad about that."

The opening sequence visualizes this message:

we see Carrie out in New York,

when a bus bearing her picture drives through a puddle and splashes her.

This sequence sets up the theme of Carrie being fabulous

but far from the flawless image on that bus.

The show often reminds us of Carrie's imperfections

through scenes where she looks stylish, then falls or gets clumsy.

Of course, the pretty, clumsy woman is a common comedy trope.

But Carrie's falls are a statement that she messes up.

The takeaway is that she is more interesting and charming

because of her ability to fail, get back up and walk it off.

The show juxtaposes attractively flawed Carrie

with Big's younger, more refined wife, Natasha.

"You know, she's shiny hair, style section, Vera Wang.

And I'm...you know, the sex column they run next to ads for penile implants."

Carrie envies Natasha's poise and sophistication --

but the show implies

that Natasha's flawlessness makes her boring

and that Carrie is inherently a more fascinating person

because she's not so impeccable.

In season two, the girls compare the Big/Carrie/Natasha love triangle

to The Way We Were,

and Carrie likens herself to Barbara Streisand's character, Katie.

"Ladies, I am having an epiphany.

The world is made up of two types of women:

the simple girls and the Katie girls.

I'm a Katie girl."

Katie is an outspoken activist who doesn't get the guy in the end,

but she's the one viewers like and root for.

"Your girl is lovely, Hubbell."

"Your girl is lovely, Hubbell."

Of course, in Sex and the City, the Katie does get the guy,

so the show is again endorsing the idea that flawed is irresistible.

Carrie Bradshaw showed the world what a fulfilling life could look like

for single women over thirty.

Even the fact that she didn't have kids, or particularly seem to want them,

was pretty ground-breaking.

"I don't even have time to eat this cookie."

"How is it?"

"It's so good I forgot to have children."

Carrie was an alternative version of modern womanhood in her time --

an ideal that encourages us to aspire to imperfection --

that encourages us, still, to embrace the messiness of the journey.

"As we drive along this road called life,

occasionally a gal will find herself a little...lost.

And when that happens, I guess she has to let go of

the coulda, shoulda, woulda, buckle up and just keep going."

When Sex and the City first came out,

it was revolutionary for a show to focus on sex and relationships

from an honest, female perspective.

"I'm sort of a sexual anthropologist."

There's something incredibly positive

about seeing a female protagonist as the lover --

the one doing the desiring of the guys --

rather than being the beloved or the object of desire.

"For me the show is really about, um, the fact

that women don't need to be defined by men, or by marriage."

"More and more single women of a certain age

are looking for a certain thing.

And that certain thing does not necessarily involve a certain ring."

It's easier to sum up

what Carrie's three friends want from their love lives --

Charlotte wants a picture-perfect marriage,

Samantha wants great sex,

and Miranda wants independence and control.

Carrie says --

"I am someone who is looking for love.

Real love."

But what exactly love looks like to Carrie Bradshaw

takes six seasons and two movies to pin down.

"Just tell me I'm the one."

She's so obsessed with love

that she sometimes gets a little carried away.

"Don't get carried away!"

And her defining romantic trait seems to be

that she needs conflict in her relationships

in order to feel satisfied.

"I'm used to the uh, you know, the hunt.

This is...effortless.

It's just...it's freaking me out."

In season two, Carrie dates a guy who strikes her as too normal,

so she tears apart his apartment looking for proof

that something's wrong with him.

Her need for struggle explains why for the entire series,

Carrie's completely fixated on the elusive man

we know as Mr. Big.

"I mean you're obsessed with talking about Big

and frankly, we can't take it anymore."

"It's out of our league."

"What is this, an intervention?"

"Yes, stop her before she obsesses again."

"With her love interest Mr. Big she believed they belonged together.

And in a very good romantic comedy that works out,

and in life sometimes that's a pathology."

Big keeps Carrie constantly guessing about their relationship status.

He's hot and then cold, and refuses to commit to her,

"Why is it so hard...for you to factor me into your life

in any real way?"

yet all this manipulative behavior just makes Carrie double down

on her mission to make Big love her.

"Something about him... you should see me around him.

I'm-I'm not like me.

I'm like, together Carrie.

I wear little outfits -- sexy Carrie, casual Carrie."

Each of the women on Sex and the City has a defining relationship with a man

who's not the person she expected to end up with.

This man offers her the chance of a more fulfilling happiness.

For Carrie, that person is Aidan.

When the two of them start dating in season three,

Aidan's openness and loving nature make him the anti-Big.

"My folks are coming to town this weekend and I want you to meet them."

On their first date Aidan tells Carrie --

"I don't wanna be a jerk, but I-I can't date a smoker."

This symbolizes that to be in this relationship,

Carrie will have to change her ways and break her self-destructive habits.

But Carrie can't adapt to a healthy relationship

and the opportunity it offers her for growth.

She's so unsettled by her drama-free relationship with Aidan

that she actually gets night terrors.

"The irony is Aidan's acting exactly the way I wish Big would have behaved,

and I'm behaving just like Big."

"Maybe you don't believe it's for real unless somebody plays hard to get."

It's not long before Carrie goes back to her two main addictions:

smoking and Big.

"I'm having an affair with Big."

"I swear to God I think my heart just stopped."

"And also, I'm smoking again."

In season four, Carrie sees Aidan again,

and urgently wants him back --

probably because he's no longer right there waiting for her.

"But I lie in bed at night, and I think about us.

And I think about you holding me, and--"

"You broke my heart!"

Once they get back together,

Carrie tries again to adjust to a traditional, relatively stable relationship

--

but it's like she's physically allergic to it.

"My body is literally rejecting the idea of marriage."

At this point it's clear that Carrie is a kind of love junkie --

which is really more of a drama junkie --

she's someone who's always looking for her next hit of romantic struggle.

And we wonder if that "love" she says she's looking for

is really the pain of unrequited or dysfunctional love.

"Did I ever really love Big or was I addicted to the pain?

The exquisite pain of wanting someone so unattainable."

Emily Nussbaum at the New Yorker has called Carrie, quote,

"the unacknowledged first female anti-hero on television."

Nussbaum argues that before Sex and the City,

the single female protagonists we saw on TV

were what she calls "you-go-girl types"

who both empowered women and appealed to men.

But Carrie didn't necessarily fit this mold.

Her unique fashion showed she was dressing for herself,

not for the opposite sex.

"My relationship is at a standstill, so instead, I'm evolving my look."

Meanwhile, she inspires mixed feelings in female viewers.

In the popular game of deciding which Sex and the City character you'd be,

many viewers at the time would have said Carrie --

"It's like I'm you.

Or I will be when I turn thirty."

That's because the other three were all clear, rigid types.

It's easy to point to others in your life as Mirandas, Samanthas and Charlottes,

but Carrie was more multi-dimensional

and most of us perceive ourselves to be likewise, complex.

"Carrie Bradshow is the individual.

She's the person who's following her own path."

But at the same time, as Nussbaum points out,

many female viewers didn't want to think of themselves as being a Carrie

when she was making bad decisions.

In our Miranda video,

we talked about how Miranda Hobbes has gone from

being the most disliked main character on the show

to becoming an aspirational figure today.

Meanwhile the public perception of Carrie herself

has arguably gone in the reverse direction.

Carrie's surface qualities made her a delight to be around,

"You broke up with James because he was too small.

This guy's too big...

Who are you, Goldicocks?"

but they also masked deeper problems in her mindset.

It's easy to laugh off Miranda eating cake out of the garbage,

but it's more unsettling to see Carrie chase after an emotionally immature man for

years

and spend her money irresponsibly.

"I spent $40,000 on shoes and I have no place to live?

I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes."

Since Sex and the City we've seen plenty of

complex female antiheroes,

but often these are women who act immorally,

yet are exceptionally powerful or accomplished.

But Carrie's shortcomings and vices are closer to our own.

"This floor is non-smoking."

"I have an addiction, sir!"

It's actually pretty rare nowadays to see a female character on TV like her

who's as openly needy, neurotic, and self-absorbed yet still likeable

as Carrie could be.

So you could say that Carrie was revolutionary

in that she provoked uncomfortable feelings of identification in viewers

who could relate to what she was going through,

even when they didn't want to.

"Maybe I've dated men who were wrong for me.

But who hasn't?"

Like its heroine, Sex and the City contains some interesting contradictions --

the women spend most of their time talking and thinking about men.

"How does it happen that four such smart woman

have nothing to talk about but boyfriends?"

But their female friends are the ones

they share and analyze these sexual adventures with --

"Our Saturday morning ritual: coffee, eggs,

and a very private dish session."

and these ladies are the platonic loves of each other's lives.

"Maybe we could be each other's soul mates.

And then we could let men be just these great, nice guys to have fun with."

So while they do spend such an extended period fixating on romance,

along the way these women prove themselves

to be very independent, career-focused, friend-first people.

"The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all...

is the one you have with yourself."

All of these contradictions of the show are embodied in Carrie,

and that's what makes her so maddening, inspiring and fascinating.

"Maybe some women aren't meant to be tamed."

And so it's only fitting that 20 years later

we should raise a cosmo to this trailblazing TV antihero

who opened up a whole new world of possibilities.

"I wanted to let you know that I'm getting married.

To myself.

And I'm registered at Manolo Blahnik.

So thanks!
