Open-air museum Ballenberg's difficult anniversary - Duration: 4:05.
Ballenberg's history is as changeable as the weather.
Once a must-see for school trips and families,
today interest is waning.
Is Ballenberg even relevant in this digital age?
The President of its Foundation Board is convinced it is.
Hi, Dres. - Hello, Peter.
Managing? - Yes, getting there.
And yet:
Ballenberg and its traditional crafts are becoming increasingly irrelevant.
Society has changed.
There's a lot more on offer, particularly in urban areas.
We're facing extremely tough competition.
We can see that we're attracting fewer school trips.
That's due in part
to cuts in local government budgets,
for school trips in particular.
The result: financial difficulties.
Last year, the museum witnessed a drop of almost CHF 1 million.
Winter storms made another dent in Ballenberg's finances.
Which is why Peter Flück started a call for donations.
Out of desperation?
No, not out of desperation.
Each year we send out 4 to 5 mailings for donations,
as other institutions do.
We used the winter storms as an opportunity,
since we had over CHF 100,000 in costs that weren't covered.
Building insurance covered the damage to the buildings.
But the CHF 100,000 hit us hard,
which is why we decided to ask for donations.
Fewer visitors are a problem, too.
In 2009, some 300,000 people visited Ballenberg;
last year, visitors numbered just under 200,000.
Urgent action is required, says tourism expert
Urs Wagenseil, of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences.
A drop of 30% is alarming.
Something has to be done - and urgently.
Counter-measures should have been put in place a long time ago.
Strategic decisions are required.
The strategy hasn't been clear over the past few years.
Squabbles about personnel matters got in the way.
In 2014, the director suddenly resigned.
There has only been speculation as to why.
The new management is currently working on a new strategy.
For the first time ever, this year's offering includes a foxtrail.
It marks an attempt to offer the first-ever
departure from what we've done before.
The big challenge in the future will be providing more such
events, alongside our traditional offering.
A foxtrail is like an interactive paper chase.
What's clear is that Ballenberg has to strike the difficult balance
between passing on knowledge and entertaining.
People want to learn, but they want to be entertained, too.
For example, making a nail at the blacksmith's.
Strike the right balance
and Ballenberg should attract more young visitors again,
a point on which the President and Urs Wagenseil are agreed.
And: more international tourists should be attracted too.
Foreign visitors to Switzerland offer tremendous potential in my view.
In that respect, the location
between Lucerne and the Jungfrau region, Interlaken,
is an absolute gift.
But of course Ballenberg's "product" will have to be so well honed
that customers really feel well looked after.
What will no doubt be important, where we have to improve and
put in considerable effort, are social media.
We have those hang gliders, who fly in Interlaken.
A South Korean visitor filmed his flight, and posted it straight away.
Then his friend came, and wanted the exact same pilot.
That shows we can attract people in this way.
Time has stood still in Ballenberg.
To tempt more younger and also foreign guests back again, however,
it's vital to move with the times.

Why do ethnic Albanians do the double-headed eagle? - Duration: 4:24.
Let's do it in Albanian.
Can you say "hello and welcome to Tama Gotcha" in Albanian?
Wait, I have to think.
She has to think.
Maybe she doesn't speak Albanian.
Of course I speak Albanian!
Wait a second.
In my opinion Arjeta has an Albanian shell,
but otherwise to me you're Swiss through and through.
You're a tough woman, you've built up a career.
For me it's totally normal that I graduated from an academic school
and began studying law.
I finished with a degree in journalism.
Then I worked and worked.
Maybe it's just a cliché, but it seems to me
that many 20-year-old Albanians
are getting engaged or even married already.
It's true, people tend to choose a partner quite early and settle down.
On the dating programmes on Tamil television
they always say, "I want a homely wife".
What is a good wife?
A good wife can make pita.
It's important that the wife looks after the children.
I am not opposed to the traditional family model.
I wouldn't mind not having to work anymore.
Girls! Living with your in-laws, yes or no?
There are lots of funny answers, such as:
Your mother raised you, and you leave her for a person you just met.
You are not a man.
And there's something even worse written here.
It wouldn't be decent to translate it.
This is also a topic of discussion among Tamils.
For us, it's normal for the wife to move in with the husband
and live with his family.
I would live with my in-laws.
You would totally do that?
Of course.
Then they could look after the children.
The two of us come across as so modern…
No really! I know of many cases where it's not an issue at all.
On the contrary, the women are happy about being able to work.
Would you do that: live with your in-laws, yes or no?
It seems to me that Albanians
are even more proud of their heritage than other foreigners.
This is how I understand it:
We all had to leave our homeland,
some for economic reasons, others as refugees.
There is such a connection with the place where you are from,
where you have lived for generations.
That's one of the most famous songs about the homeland.
About longing for the homeland.
That's exactly what I mean. All Albanians do that:
the double-headed eagle.
We are extremely proud of people who are pursuing international careers.
If you look at what is trending on YouTube right now:
it's always Albanian singers, such as Bebe – how do you pronounce it?
Actually her name is Bleta Rexha.
In English it's Bebe Rexha.
If you are successful, you are totally hyped.
But if you mess up, it's over.
You get bashed and insulted?
You are a social outcast.
Take the example of homosexuality:
it's still a taboo topic.
If somebody comes out…
Difficult.
It's not well received.
There's lots of comments, but I can't translate them.
Some of it is really offensive.
People think it's a scandal.
Yes, apparently it's not okay to celebrate gay pride in Albania.
Hope you like this vlog. In Albanian we say: …
And we'll see you again next week. Bye.
So lovely, it gives me goose pimples.

From Damascas to Bex: a patissier's story - Duration: 2:04.
Welcome. I'm Mahmoud.
I'm a Syrian from Damascus.
There was the language difference at first.
Anyone who leaves their country, like tourists, faces this:
a new language, new surroundings.
It was not difficult for us to integrate in a new, different place.
School integration was easy for our kids,
even though it's different from Damascus.
The teachers were surpised how quickly they made friends and learned French.
They'll progress, God willing.
The hardest thing initially
was receiving an F permit.
It makes it difficult to move around.
I can't leave Switzerland.
The other thing was I couldn't find work.
I am trying to get off welfare so I can get a B residency permit.
It'll make things easier in future.
The cost of living is high here compared to Syria.
For me the most important thing is that the children
can finish their studies.
The whole family is happy here.
If my children want to stay here
I'd have no problem staying too.
But I'd still want to go home to visit.

50th anniversary of the Merian Gardensn - Duration: 2:00.
1,500 different varieties of bearded iris grow and bloom here.
With such great names as Sixtine C., Carnaby and Back in Black.
Most of them are historic varieties
from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The area of 180,000 m2 also has a rhododendron valley
and a garden with medicinal plants.
The grounds on the edge of the city once
belonged to the large landowner Christoph Merian.
He left his huge fortune to the city of Basel,
with instructions to use it for people's wellbeing.
The gardens are also intended to serve this purpose.
We believe that nature, green spaces, do us good
and that flowers make people happy.
The Merian Gardens also help with
education, and in that sense are a place for teaching.
Specifically, this means that each year, 30 school classes from Basel can
learn more about nature and agriculture in the Merian Gardens.
On several days throughout the year.
On this morning, class 3c from the Niederholz school is learning
all about apple trees, pests and beneficial insects.
I think it's really cool, as you can do new things here.
I also enjoy discovering nature.
Is there anything you don't like as much?
Hm. Not really. Apart from the earwigs.
Class 3c will visit the Merian Gardens again in autumn
and will be able to harvest the fruits of this nature course - the apples.
We believe that we are also sewing the seeds
of an appreciation of nature and respect for nature
and for a life later on
of pleasure in this natural environment.
The Merian Gardens of today
were once a wedding present for Christoph Merian.
For the past 50 years they have been a gift for the whole region.

'If you want to keep your job, adapt!' - Duration: 2:26.
I'm well integrated in Switzerland.
I landed, so to speak, in Bulle
and got a warm welcome.
My family joined me 5 months later.
The kids fitted in well at school,
my wife found work.
It's just a question of adjusting,
being willing to adapt.
Because they are respectful and hard working.
Perhaps more flexible.
They are very capable.
Normally, if someone emigrates,
it's because their country's in trouble.
When they opt to leave,
they're ready for anything.
Young people who come here
are prepared to work an hour extra
or come in on Saturdays,
because sometimes we have to work
on Saturdays, Sundays or during the night.
This could put pressure on those in the industry
who aren't used to it.
Regarding the workers
already in Switzerland:
if they adapt,
they won't be unemployed.
If they refuse to adjust
they will find themselves out of work.
The idea's not bad.
If all the companies and employers
involved in construction
were to apply the law,
there'd be a level playing field.
I prefer to hire someone locally
because I know him
and he's here,
even if he costs more than someone from
Zurich, Geneva or Portugal.
I prefer that.
I think it's right
to try to employ
people locally.
But I wonder if it's really possible?
And will it all work out?
