Because when I got started
I didn't have a car
It's tough to talk about
achieving dreams and thinking big when
you're not in the situation
that you desire to be in.
So my self-image was low, my self-esteem was low
But I started to understand that unless I was
confident about my future - forget my present -
Unless I was confident about my future,
other people would not believe
in where I said I was heading
So I was getting off of the airplane at LAX
Los Angeles international airport
and I had a carry on with me
and I when I went to go turn the corner towards baggage claim,
there were two revolving doors
Two revolving doors.
From one revolving door there was a long line,
maybe 50 people or so,
I didn't count but approximately 50 people
waiting to go through one revolving door
The second revolving door,
there was no one going out of, not one person.
There wasn't a sign that said, "Out of order."
There wasn't any cones up to distract people
from going through that set of revolving doors.
There was just nobody!
When you decide to grow a team in this business,
you're going to grow yourself and grow your team,
with an audience, not in privacy.
Which means that you may be
embarrassed as you grow this team.
Things you thought would happened one month
may not happen.
Goals you set, you may miss.
So this will happen in public
and I could tell you about a lot of
embarrassing moments where I proclaimed something,
I pronounced to the world:
"I'm quitting my job by this time"
and it didn't happen.
Watch this:
So I turn the corner of a revolving door,
50 people.
Now you've got to make a decision to step out
when you want people to follow you.
Nobody's there.
You've got to take a chance. You might be embarrassed.
So I started walking towards the door without a line.
The only thing is, when you do that,
people are looking at you along the way,
like, "Look at this fool here."
"If the door worked, we'd all be over there."
That's what people are going to say about your company.
"If it works so well,
how come everybody's not a millionaire?"
But you can't worry about what people say,
if you're going to lead a team.
So I walked anyway.
And I can hear the people whispering.
They were saying things like, "Watch this."
"Hey, look at him!"
People start pulling out their phones.
But you can't worry about that!
You've got to keep going.
So I kept going!
Right? Like, "Y'all should be over here too."
That's my posture.
Now, the only thing about doing that
is that if it doesn't open,
you gotta walk past those same people.
"I mean, I thought it was open, I just assumed,
nobody was over there, I just tried..."
The explanation: "I thought I was going to quit my job.
I know I'm still here. I know I told--"
So that's why people don't do it!
Embarrassment!
But you can't worry about that. You've got to do it anyway.
So I walked with posture, chest out.
And I hit it.
Now look, when you hit the door
you can't tap.
You can't join a company and expect
to be successful with your toe in.
"I'm going to try it out. We'll give it a shot.
We'll see what happens.
I mean, you know, I'll give it a few months."
It won't work that way!
So you can't tap the door.
It won't open anyway. You've got to hit it.
Now, the only thing about hitting it that hard
is that if it doesn't open,
you're going to be up all in the revolving door,
bag around -- it's going to look bad!
But I couldn't worry about that.
So I walked strong
and I hit the door,
and guess what happened Mastermind family?
It opened! It opened.
True story, it opened.
It opened and I walked around.
Look, for those who know me,
I wanted so badly to turn around say,
"What! Now I told y'all!"
I wanted so badly, so badly...
"What, now y'all been waiting for it."
But I'm too cool for that.
Too cool for that.
But I did glance back over my shoulder
and guess what I saw?
Half the line got over and started following.
This is what I'm telling you.
People just need someone with confidence to follow
They just need one.
They need one deaf person, one 78 year old,
one 19 year old, one black, one white...
Everybody with me?
They need one person that says,
"Look I'll be that person."
How come there's no people?
"I'll be that person."
So you be the example for your company.
If there's no one like you at the top of your company,
you can be that person at the top of your company.
People need an example.
Unfortunately, followers need an example.
They need to see someone who doesn't speak their language succeed,
so they can see.
They need to see someone who's moved to your country
and doesn't know anyone, so that people who say,
"I didn't know anybody in my neighborhood,"
doesn't have an excuse because
you didn't know anyone in the country!
