Every studio experience we have
improves our work together, we always try new things
You can only improve
You can improve things with vocal maturity
and learn to accept all you can do with your voice
with all the range you can have
Fabien has a lot of ranges
so it's very interesting to be able to use that voice
more and more often
The more time passes
the more the voice takes an important place in Wheelfall
I really love Scott Walker
and I really wanted to find that depth
he creates with his singing
"Black Bile" was the occasion
to experiment on that
On The Atrocity Reports
the singing is the main element
with the rythm section
That was the challenge
Drums are very important here
there are some very technical parts
I took it as a challenge really
All the music I play use drum machines
and reproducing a drum machine
with my actual drums
is something I've always wanted to do
Years ago I heard some drum'n'bass
and went: "How does the drummer do that?
Wait, it's a machine playing?
It sounds so good!
How do you do this?"
With Fabien we listen to a lot of indie hip hop
We send each others many bands
it's almost never metal music
Machines are everywhere
It's just a palette for me
Fab was very directive
but because he was right
When he sent me the demos to work on it
the drums were already there
He had already programmed them
I just had to readapt that to a real drumming
Fabien brings 95% of the songs
afterwards we work on it
Throwing away some parts changing some others
adding a few ones
He always came with a base
we always talked about it altogether
Sometimes at rehearsals we didn't touch our instruments
only listening to some demos and talking about them
we talked about the songs we want to keep
what had to be removed
what we had to rework
We can try to give it a meaning here
to totally let yourself go
On the Atrocity Reports
as the singing is more important
we may have structures
that are much more regular song structures in a sense
Of course it's a good thing
to make the message clearer
As long as you don't simplify your message in its meaning
And they don't do that
I'm totally into it
They had to do it, I think it's very smart
Maybe we had a raw diamond
and we we cut it to keep only the essential
So the music is: "in your face"
The spontaneous and "in your face" side of the songs
matches the state of mind they had
when they started writing this record
At least that's how I see it from the outside
We had to beat it!
efficient, in-your-face songs from the beginning to the end
Even if some songs
are out of the ordinary of course
what's bred in the bone comes out in the flesh
As a listener
I enjoy it a lot
There's a straight catchy side...
most of the songs go straight into your head
You must be ready to get beaten down
and enjoy it
