I'm currently a janitor at a gym.

We have a stairwell that leads down some stairs to a door that doesn't open because we lost

the keys years ago.

One night, there was a loud banging sound coming from the door.

Sounded like someone was banging it every second for a couple minutes.

I stood at the top of the stairs and listened and watched, and it stopped.

It started up again a few minutes later.

I went back up there to see and it stopped again as soon as I got there.

Told my manager the next day and had a locksmith come in.

He got the door open and it's just an old supply closet that's empty.

Every so often someone hears a banging sound coming from the door at bottom of the stairs.

This time on Ask Rad Rat, we talk about Lil Wayne, we talk about

subscription boxes, and we talk about creative skateboarding. Let's get into it.

Welcome to Rad Rat Video! Here on the channel, we talk about all kinds of

skateboarding topics. Subscribe so you can see stuff like trick histories, game

reviews, learning tricks on the Shred School, catching up with pros on Retro

Rippers, all kinds of stuff, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. So today we're

doing Ask Rad Rat, where I answer all of your questions ,and I've got a few of

them for you today. First one is from JC and he asked, "is

creative skateboarding like Richie Jackson, William Spencer, Daewon Song a

fad, or is it the future? It takes a ton of talent, but it can come off as gimmicky

and some skateboard purists are turned off by it. On the other hand, could it be

that skateboarding has progressed to a point where switching wheels in midair,

doing backflips, and grass manuals are the next logical step?" So I thought that

was kind of interesting, and he wasn't sure whether he should put Daewon on

that list or not, but you've seen a lot of stuff that he does. It doesn't really

make it to video parts, but Instagram and stuff. Manualling and switching wheels and

all that kind of stuff. Is that the future of skateboarding? And to me I

think that there's only so many categories that you can really have a

shot at being the best at. Imagine if you're just starting skateboarding, and

you want to be the next big gap guy. You want to be like, you know, the Jamie

Thomas of today. Well guess what? You're going to have to go to El Toro. You're

going to have to go to the Lyon gap. What's that, a 25 set? You know, and you might

not be able to do that. And it might be just a ridiculous level that you're going to

have to reach. But there's so many other things you could do. You could be the

first guy in the world to do a Natas spin on that rock over there on the

beach, you know. You could come up with a new way to do something, and you could

still be interesting. Now there's a level of doing that on purpose and

just being weird just for the sake of being weird, but if that's what you

actually enjoy doing, if that's the challenge you can put to yourself, if you

like blazing new new trails for yourself and doing stuff that no one's ever done,

then I think that that's perfectly fine. And I think that we're going to see more

and more of that. One of the things I was saying about as well, is back in '92 when

there is the tech explosion. Everyone was doing pressure flips and late flips and

all kinds of triple flips and every combination you could possibly think of.

I think of that like a brainstorming session in the skateboarding world. So

you go from the late '80s, where people are still doing no complies and bonelesses

and then you go to '93 - just five years later - the scene of the skateboarding

world had changed a lot and if it weren't for that huge brainstorming session that

everyone went in on together, then the 90s wouldn't have had all the tricks

that it had. So you really - you were able to pick out the hardflips and the inward

heelflips and, you know, a couple of different tricks over here that ended up

being really good, and going off with them and building on and doing them down

gaps and everything. So if you think about all that kind of stuff with

switching wheels all that, that might not last, per se, but something else that you

come up with, or the way that you skated this -- that might just be this generation's

brainstorming session that will inform the future of skateboarding. Okay, next

question was from Wesley Williams who asked, "Should Lil Wayne have a skate

brand?" And so I looked it up, and he kind of does, but not really. He's got two

things. He's got TRKFT, which is a clothing brand, which is supposedly like

skateboarder inspired, but it's not really skateboarding. He's got Sqvad Up

"SQVAD" - it has a 'v' in it. It's a mobile skateboarding game. It's for Android and

iPhone. It doesn't work on my tablet or my phone, so I can't play it. I really want

to play it, just to do like a quick look at it and show you guys what it's like,

but it just, I don't know, it's not compatible. So I thought about that a

little bit, and let's say he started a deck company just for the sake of argument.

Does he -- is that something that really makes sense? So the thing is, he's

been skateboarding for like six or seven years or something like that, and

he's been doing it consistently. You know, he's got his own skate park, he has pro

skaters come over and skate with him. He is a skateboarder. Yeah, he's not the best.

He's not pro-level, and it's not his main passion.

Obviously it's music. But he's a skater. If you want to make a skateboarding

brand and do skateboarding related stuff, I think that would be totally fine.

Especially if you consider the mainstream appeal that it would have. The

last time that happened, there was a -- well maybe not the last time -- but the one that

comes to mind is Pharrell. He had his Ice Cream Shoes, and they had a skate team

and all that. I think in Skate 2 maybe, there's like a sponsor challenge. You can

get on Ice Cream, but you know, in theory, if that was done really well, that could

help promote skateboarding in a legitimate way. We're not talking about

the Olympics, we're talking about a skateboarding brand. So you know, I

wouldn't have a problem with it if Lil Wayne decided to do something legitimate

with skateboarding. As long as it was real. If he was just putting his name on

something and it was generic, then that would kind of suck, but I think he could use

his popularity to do a lot of good for the skateboarding world. Okay last

question is from me._.sb who asked about skate subscription boxes like fun box

monthly and Krakbox. So these are kind of interesting. So they've been in the

video gaming world for a long time. I watch a lot of gaming channels on

YouTube, and a lot of those guys are sponsored by these things. So there will

be different t-shirts and toys and a lot kind of stuff, and so they've recently

started to get their way into skateboarding, and I really personally

don't see the point of them at all. Me._.sb, he had gotten one before and I asked

him what it was like, and he got some 51 millimeter wheels. They didn't

ask him what size, so he just kind of got those, and luckily he said that's close

to what he skates anyway. But for me, I skate 56s usually. 51 would be a little

bit too small. I don't know if I'd ever use them, you know, and I'm paying for it

right? And I would just throw it in a box. He also got some wax, which he didn't

care about. You get stickers, you get a t-shirt. So your t-shirt will be the

right size, at least, because you tell them in advance. But I just don't really

get the point. And Krack will apparently give out decks randomly every now and then

as well. So I personally don't get the point. I think 90% of that stuff would go

into my box of loose skate parts. I have extra bushings and, like

broken base plates and all that stuff just goes into the box. I think most of

that would end up there. I don't need a new block of wax every month, you know, I

almost never use it anyway. So for me, it just doesn't make a lot of sense and I

think that if it's anything like the gaming world, they're going to start

trying to take over YouTube anyway, and probably burning bridges for potential

sponsorship, but I don't want to be sponsored by them anyway, because I just

don't really think it's necessary. I don't think it does any good. If you have

money to blow, and you think it's fun to just open up a box and get a weird color

sheet of grip tape or something, then go for it! I don't think is anything wrong

with it, I just wouldn't personally ever use it

and I don't really see much of a point either. So that's it for these ones. If

Cam Newton Is a Product of Panthers Offensive Line - Duration: 2:47.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton struggled last season, one year after winning the league

MVP, and the sports media can't seem to figure out why.

And there's an endless list of explanations.

It was a Super Bowl hangover, Cam is lazy, he scrambles too much, he suddenly forgot

how to throw in the pocket, which is my favorite by the way, because it's just another example

of the sports media completely ignoring the wall of 350-pound men that stand in front

of the quarterback.

Offensive lines matter.

What did the final four teams last season, the Patriots, Steelers, Packers and Falcons,

what did they all have in common?

It's not just they had great quarterbacks.

They also had great offensive lines.

So it's no surprise that a quarterback, who likes to throw off his back foot downfield,

needs a lot of time in the pocket.

And that's okay.

If there's anyone who can bail himself out of pressure, it's Cam Newton.

But that doesn't mean it's sustainable.

And just look at the correlation between Newton's Raw QBR and ProFootballFocus' offensive

line rankings since Cam's second year in the league.

When the Panthers o-line is in the top 10, Cam is in the top 10.

When they're not, Cam isn't as good.

And I know it sounds cliché, but you're supposed to build a football team from the

inside, out.

Running backs and wide receivers are luxury items that are only effective if you have

a good o-line.

Hell, I wouldn't call quarterbacks luxury items, but you put Tom Brady behind Seattle's

offensive line, his career is over before Week 4.

That's why I find it amazing everyone sh*ts on Russell Wilson, Eli Manning or Andrew Luck

for having a bad game, when they have three-tenths of a second to throw the football.

It's the same thing with Cam Newton.

Now, there is some hope for Carolina heading into this season.

The Panthers are fairly strong at center and guard, with Trai Turner, Ryan Kalil and Andrew

Norwell.

But their issue has been on the outside, at the tackle position, which presents a problem

with a QB who likes to scramble like Newton.

That's why the Panthers shelled out $55-million over five years for Ryan Kalil's brother,

Matt Kalil, who made Sam Bradford look like Peyton Manning last season before he hurt

his hip in late September, and Minnesota's o-line all went to hell.

Assuming he stays healthy, the Panthers should do a much better job protecting the quarterback.

That's why I'm predicting a bounce-back year for Cam Newton.

But unlike the media's narrative, I think it has less to do with Cam, and more to do

with his offensive line.

Language Keeps 🙉⏩🤦🏻‍♂️: Why Emojis Became the New Ancient Runes - Duration: 6:53.

In the new Emoji movie, it's no coincidence that the main character's name is Gene.

Language is evolving.

Emojis are the new ancient runes, and by runes I really mean hieroglyphs.

Hieroglyph is a Greek word that means: sacred writing.

The way we hold our phones is how we used to hold sacred objects.

It's how we would pray, or reach out our palms for life-giving food and water.

But today our sacred writings aren't on the walls, to behold.

Our sacred writings are our in our hands…to be held.

This is a worship pose.

Our hands come together around the phone, similar to prayer hands, but they're also

open, receptive to what the phone gives us: we send out messages into the ether, and then

we wait, hoping for replies, news, and notifications.

Our palms are open to technological alms.

Tones and ringtones, alerts and banners.

Is it the internet of things or the Internet of tings?

What hasn't chimed in?

Which brings us back to emojis.

Like hieroglyphs, Emojis help us tell stories.

Emojis help us bring play and creativity back into our communications.

Each emoji has a particular meaning, a "right" way of using it, and digital language snobs

will tell you you're using emojis wrong.

It's the same way I used Runes in the title because it sounded better than hieroglyph,

which sounded better than ideogram, and like any ambiguous-looking emoji, used in the right

context, you probably knew what I meant.

That's the state of our language.

We use words when they sound good.

Or rather, we use good words in wrongs ways because they sound right.

Which means it's no coincidence that over time the word ironic has come to mean coincidence.

It's how language works: meaning emerges with popular usage.

We do the same thing with emojis.

Each emoji morphs with context.

Emojis are the rise of an old concept in a new form: many ancient languages used graphic

symbols to capture a concept or idea, and that is what emojis do.

Because Emojis go beyond English, beyond Japanese.

Emojis don't speak Russian.

They don't speak Chinese.

Emojis speak human, and their meanings evolve with each person and culture.

It's like emojis speak body language, but more than bodies, emojis speak our minds.

Emojis represent how we see the world, which is different from how the ancients saw their

world, and that is why emojis look like this, and hieroglyphs looked like that:

With emojis, we're all going back to kindergarten.

We can turn ideas into pictures.

Each text is show and tell.

And this could be a good thing.

Together, we're learning to communicate again.

We're expanding our understanding of language, so that we can use language to better understand

ourselves.

Emojis, like good punctuation, help us get the point across.

The way we choose to get the point across represents our personality.

With emojis, we're expressing our feelings and sharpening our creativity.

We're turning ideas and emotions into pictures, because words aren't good enough.

With words, can you say what you mean?

Deep down?

Is there language for that?

We don't always have the words, but soon, we might have a new written language.

Emoji English.

Emoji Chinese.

I say this in jest because emojis themselves will evolve, or they'll be replaced by another

idiographic language that better captures how we see the world, but either way, we're

merging our modern words with the proto-writing style of the ancients.

As much as I used to cringe, and...often still do, one day, all but our most formal communication might look

like this.

As I said in the beginning, it's no coincidence

that the main character's name is Gene: Emojis are about expression, and it's pretty

obvious that as the movie unravels, Gene will learn to express himself in new ways.

Love it or hate it, we're all like Gene: one emoji, many smilies.

So what's happening to English?

By adopting these emojis, by using emoticons, are we taking a step back?

Are these runes ruining our language?

Or are we returning to something fundamental?

Are we learning to speak a language that words alone lack?

Because Language is doing what it's always done:

Evolving.

And that's the point.

Love it or hate it, language evolves.

If it didn't, we'd still be speaking old English.

Not even.

We'd still be speaking caveman.

The firsts sounds that popped out of their mouths, those would be our words.

But language, like life, evolves.

Just as today we don't spake

Shakespeare's English, our descendants won't speak our English.

And while the emoji movie might be a bad idea, or a dark horse success, or a big hit,

it follows the rules of evolution.

If unfit to survive, the movie will die on arrival, but emojis, the bigger idea, will

continue to thrive.

You are as large as your ability to express yourself.

contains multitudes.

So, a lot of movies- I don't know so much animation but- there's

there's a lot of lack of narration these days. It's a lot of action and special effects.

But, they haven't got the story with it.

You just sort of walk out feeling empty, don't you?

Yeah, there' was a classic gag on- back in- in-

Before Toy Story was released, actually.

On the Pixar Website.

Because, there were so many technologies back then

before films came out

and there was- Just when Jurassic Park came out

And it got panned for it's story being- you know, a little

But, the story was a little lax.

They caught into the guys at Pixar.

And it was quickly pulled down.

But, it was Rex from Toy Story. with his big foot stomping down, and it said "Story matters"

Whereas the slogan for Jurassic park was "Size Matters"

For the T-- For the T-Rex

That always stuck with me as the importance of story at Pixar.

Even like I deal with educational videos

You know, the story is important as well.

No matter how small the video. There has be some sort of story within it to create that interest.

Well before I was, you know working for the big corporates.

I was actually teaching at TAFE.

And, so I was teaching computer animation.

And computer graphics at TAFE

For about 7 years.

That's Fantastic.

you know that's my background as well. So, I had many is in TAFE.

I absolutely loved it.

I love teaching people about- not only the techniques, but

the history and how we got to where we are now.

You know? It's an incredible journey.
