Fasnacht: contemplative, colourful, witty and above all, varied.
A died-in-the-wool Fasnacht participant would wax even more lyrical.
in the specialist jargon of the responsible UNESCO Commission:
It makes a contribution to co-existence,
a contribution to tolerance.
It voices criticism of social issues
and helps preserve the local dialect.
That may sound dry, but it's spot-on in terms of the content.
And convincing enough for the UNESCO delegates.
Adding Basel's Fasnacht (carnival) to the intangible cultural heritage list
takes just a few minutes.
And what does that mean exactly?
There won't be any outward sign of this yet during the 2018 Fasnacht.
There won't be a UNESCO banner or flag
on the Mittlere Brücke.
But in terms of the significance of Fasnacht, and for Basel,
this is a great day.
The candidacy also kept the Fasnacht participants busy.
And at the same time it provided fodder for a punchline.
We don't add any carnival to the World Heritage list without checking it over.
That sounds even tougher than the police vehicle inspections.
Don't be impudent, young man!
A propos impudent:
In the candidacy film and the ten photos included in the
dossier, we certainly were careful
not to include any overly harsh themes.
One has to be a bit careful as regards the jury.
Certain countries are not as advanced when it comes to
criticizing the authorities, and there could be misunderstandings.
So we don't want to conceal it
but we have to be considerate of those who are making the decisions.
After the Fete des Vignerons in Canton Vaud, Basel's Fasnacht is
only the second Swiss folk tradition
to be included in the intangible cultural heritage list.
Will the UNESCO label
attract even more than the 200,000 spectators who come every year?
There will probably be a few more guests.
And there's room for some additional guests,
which would certainly be good for Fasnacht.
But you're not including this in the brochures?
We'll definitely mention the UNESCO
status on the Internet and in our brochures.
There's always a fear that a huge flood of tourists will descend.
That's good.
But neither they nor I were at carnival in Croatia,
although it is also on the list.
We have to be realistic.
It's important for the region and for the city.
Fasnacht isn't just any old event,
it's a cultural asset that is recognized internationally.
As of 19 February, active Fasnacht participants can take to the streets again.
With their decorative lanterns and acerbic wit.
