It makes me happy that foreigners appreciate it.
It makes me happy that we have a common topic to talk about
Martial arts and similar are Japanese traditional culture.
Hey guys it's Cathy Cat and today we've come to Brilliant Star decorations.
Which is a Japanese fashion event. Today the theme of the whole event is called
"Princess in the World Garden" and it means it brings together Lolita fashion brands
and Japanese style fashion brands from all around the world.
This time we are gonna go and ask the people here
if they know the word "Cool Japan" which has been used on Japanese TV
and if they can tell us what "cool Japan" things Japan offers in their countries
and what they can recommend you. Let's go and Ask Japanese.
Everyone is all like "Cool Japan" and foreigners love Cool Japan.
But what is this "Cool Japan" concept?
I was wondering that too.
What actually is so cool about this "Cool Japan" concept?
I don't actually have an actual experience of it really.
Being in Japan, we don't really grasp the concept.
But it's the thing that people abroad like parts of our Japanese culture.
And that makes me happy.
Inside the Cool Japan frame seems to be anime, manga music and such.
What should foreigners come to enjoy in Japan?
I don't really know much about anime and such.
But I want people do discover Japanese music and Japanese fashion.
What music do you recommend? - A band balled GLAY
Why Glay? - I have loved them since middle school.
It's the music of my school days. I want other people to enjoy it too.
I like the music and I like Anime.
Right now I love the anime "Shokugeki no Souma" which is about food.
That anime is so entertaining!
- It's not connected to cute fashion at all. - It's about food?
In general people make food and fight each other.
Winners and loosers get decided in it.
It's really funny and I love eating good food too.
So I enjoy seeing the food scenes.
But it also describes human growth. I can really recommend it.
Somtimes anime have really deep messages in them.
Yes exactly! Having serious themes inside all the jokes makes it more interesting.
It's not a cute anime but I like it a lot.
I didn't expect a fun answer like this.
I think a big part of "Cool Japan" culture is anime and manga. The 2D world.
Similarly, I think it's anime too.
They call it "Cool Japan" but mostly it's Anime being released abroad.
Is there a good Anime you watched recently?
I have been supporting Sailor Moon for many years.
During the year are always a few new anime that I support.
This year many international Lolitas are here.
Sailor Moon has become world famous. What does that mean to you?
At the start I didn't know it was world famous. I found that out once I got older.
It makes me happy to have a common topic to talk about with international people.
It's easy to have a conversation about it right. - Yes.
Are you watching an Anime now? - I like Black Butler.
That fits your current clothing style quite well!
I read the manga before starting Lolita fashion actually.
What part of Cool Japan culture do you want people abroad to enjoy?
Anime Manga of course and then Japan-only traditional things.
Not sure if that's part of it but also Japanese buildings and such.
Anime. There are many new Anime these days I enjoy watching.
Some I just watched the first episode, but I am curious for more.
Japanese traditional wear, martial arts and similar are Japanese traditional culture.
That's Cool Japan in my opinion.
I personally learned Japanese archery. So that's my Cool Japan image.
I learned Japanese archery too. - You did? Wow.
It's a very Japanese sport. - It is.
The first thing I think of is Anime and there are many followers of it abroad.
There is also the Japanese food culture that's very Cool Japan.
In my opinion Cool Japan is Lolita fashion, Gothic fashion and Japanese wear.
Subculture wise I really love Anime and Manga too.
This part of our culture is getting popular not only in Japan but
people all over the world start loving things from Japan.
When people are really passionate about our culture, that's Cool Japan to me.
Is there a Cool Japan anime or manga you can recommend?
I am actually really into "Attack on Titan".
Wow that's a surprise.
I didn't see that coming.
I love the series lots. The story and the characteristics, everything
I love it all and am looking forward to the continuation of the story.
What's Cool Japan culture to you?
I think it's Anime and Manga but also cosplaying.
Cosplaying used to be a small part of Japanese culture.
But that changed. I think parts of Japanese culture that are popular abroad
are called "Cool Japan." So I think Anime is a big part of it.
What Cool Japan anime do you recommend?
The Magician's Bride is a fantasy Anime that I like.
That one is pretty good.
I like the fantasy world it creates. It is set to be happening abroad.
but it contains a lot of Japanese emotions.
The movement of the main protagonist are very Japanese.
It's one of these Anime that show abroad through a Japanese filter.
That is quite fun.
- That's Lolita fashion for me! - How shall people enjoy it?
At this Brilliant Start Decorations event, many people from abroad are taking part.
This is a great chance to get to know international lolitas so I want others to join too.
Wear Lolita and make international friends. - exactly.
What's good about cool Japan culture?
I write Japanese ballads and poetry. I think this is a wonderful part of Japanese culture.
People abroad like it too and I think that's wonderful.
Is it hard to make these? - No it's easy. Anyone can do it.
Please give it a go. - I shall try my best.
People often say it's anime and games.
I think Lolita fashion is a part of it.
There is a lot of culture in Japan that Japanese people are not aware of.
Dolls, plushies and such.
It would be great if we could promote it more abroad.
Those were all our questions. Thank you. - Thank you Cathy!
Now, Cool Japan - Cool Japan is actually a brand concept
that has been used by the Japanese government to
"brand" Japanese culture abroad or like it explains how
Japanese culture is branded abroad, but popular culture.
Meaning not just the traditional things, but anime, manga,
music - they're kind of starting to recognize that that is actually a
big thing abroad that would influence people positively
about their culture, about Japanese culture.
Many years ago, it used to be sumo and sushi that people were saying,
but nowadays many people say it's fashion, it's music,
it's anime, it's manga - so it's different things that are now influencing
people positively and give them a positive opinion of Japan and Japanese culture.
So that's the big branding of Cool Japan culture.
There's lots more about that - if you're curious, look it up.
Interesting to find out that some people didn't actually know the title!
And the director of Ask Japanese is dancing behind the camera!
He's doing a very traditional dance there.
Lovely, very lovely.
So yeah, what do you think is Cool Japan culture in your opinion?
