Photo book review: Beyond the dark veil [Post mortem photography] - Duration: 9:34.
Hi friends, welcome to the Street Level Photography channel
Today begins a new section called Photo Books Reviews
We will make reviews of photo books, not only concerning street photography, but all photography in general
Before talking about today's book, I would like you to remember a scene from the movie "The Others"
It's a 2002 movie with Nicole Kidman, which perhaps many of you have seen
The protagonist in a scene finds a book in his hands
flipping through the book he notices that it is a book of the dead
with images of the deceased depicted in different poses
for several years I thought this was a film fiction
actually, I later discovered that this kind of photography really existed in the past
called post mortem photography
subjects were photographed, even in particular poses. But these subjects had already died
This premise was necessary, because the book that I present today deals with post mortem photography
But we see it together in the summary we have prepared
The title of the book is "Beyond the dark veil"
The author is Thanatos Archive
The publisher is Grand Central Press & Last Gasp
it's a 200-page book with about 150 images

This book is a journey into superstition
it is a journey into the history of photography
and this is what I would like to talk to you about mainly
but it is also a journey into a distant era that no longer exists
The reason why we are talking about the history of photography is this:
if we consider that photography was born in 1839
the birth of post mortem photography dates back more or less to 1850
and remained in use until the early 1940s
so we have about 100 years of practicing this kind of photography
then we must consider this type of photography a large part of the history of photography
Before the birth of photography, those who wanted to have a portrait of the deceased had to resort to painting
so few could afford a painting on canvas
With photography we have an opening even to the poorer classes
so they too could have an image of the deceased
In the Victorian era in the mid-800s, there was a very high infant mortality
therefore, post mortem photographs were the only images of children that parents could have
It must be said that in post-mortem photography there is also a lot of superstition
If we think that post mortem photography was also practiced on those subjects who had a picture even when alive
then there we talk about superstition

Post mortem photography also had a tragic course, in my opinion:
in the beginning there were only portraits of the face of the deceased
then the deceased was photographed lying on a sofa, as if he were sleeping a deep sleep
in the end the dead were photographed in attitudes of daily life
with objects in his hand that would remind him of his earthly life
After having made this premise on post mortem photography
let's see now how this book is structured
As you can see, the book is divided into six chapters
The first chapter shows subjects on the deathbed or during the pre-mortem phase
so they were sick subjects who were known to be dead soon
The second chapter concerns children and families. it is the biggest chapter of the book
The third chapter concerns adults
In the fourth chapter, also very interesting, we have images of crimes, murders and tragedies
The fifth chapter contains photographs of mourning
and the last chapter, very interesting, shows us images of dead pets
The quality of the book is excellent
Each chapter is opened by historical and detailed information on the type of photo treated
each photo has a caption that explains the details
there are images on full page and others a little smaller
the book is full of images
some are shocking, like those concerning children
in other parts the book is moving, especially in the chapter dedicated to pre-mortem
there we find so much dignity and awareness on the part of those who know that it is going to go away
these two elements mix together and explode from the eyes of the photographed people
really creepy this chapter!
I really liked it.
The book, as I said, is not macabre as it seems
it's a book about stories: true stories, stories of despair, even touching stories
so according to me, it's a book to buy
