Are you ready for Part 3 of Pixel THING's Best Unconverted Arcade Games series?
Let's take a look!
Batman
You might think that Batman, this arcade game, was somehow related
to Ocean's smash hit for 8 and 16-bit home computers of late 80s.
But, no.
This was Atari and Numega's own take on Tim Burton's first amazing Bat movie, that
is still my favorite after all these years.
Being based on the same movie would, obviously, seem like the developers shared ideas for
the conversion, but even having the same gameplay elements, they're completely different from
one another.
And the more advanced hardware present on arcades by that time would also offer a ton
more ways to expand that Ocean formula.
The music is a freakin' amazing chiptune rendition of the movie's original soundtrack
and the action is highly frenetic!
And if you love the character as much as I do, you'll also be totally addicted to this
Batman exclusive arcade game!
A.B. Cop
Again, the frenetic action and fast scrolling of Chase H.Q. and Hang-On ended up inspiring
another exclusive arcade game.
Released in 1990, A.B. Cop is set in the future, in where we play the role of traffic cop who
rides an air bike chasing down the bad guys at breakneck speeds!
And that's what "A.B. Cop" stands for:
Air Bike Cop.
It a quite easy game.
We just need to smash into a certain number of bikers before time runs out and do the
same to the stage boss 'til it explodes.
There's also a couple of stunts we can pull off to help us on our mission to stop crime
once and for all:
the ability to jump and an unlimited turbo boost that needs to replenish itself before
being used again.
Applying these two tricks together is a pretty good technique against end level bosses.
And, speaking of this, A.B. Cop is often remembered as the title that introduced the end level
boss to the racing genre, even if I don't see it as a racing game.
Cosmic Cop
Another arcade exclusive, and another cop game!
This time around is Cosmic Cop, by Irem, released in 1991
and also known as Armed Police Unit Gallop.
You probably already knew that!
Right?
But what you didn't know is that it's part of the R-Type series!
Yeah!
Indeed!
We control a space police fighter going against Bydo's space vehicles, so expect similar
gameplay in relation to all other R-Type games.
The weapon system implemented is in where it differs.
At our disposal there's a powerful laser beam and the scroll rate
depends on the player's position.
Quite unusual back then!
Back in 2011 was included in the compilation Irem Arcade Hits and only available for PC
and Mac.
Since it was released that I've been trying to get it for my collection, 'cause I truly
love these compilations, but it has been quite a difficult task.
Besides Cosmic Cop, there are other 17 Irem masterpieces!
Oni – The Ninja Master
By 1995, Banpresto, part of the Bandai Namco empire since 2008, released this obscure fighting
game know in Japan as Oni - the Ninja Master.
The first half of the 90s, and after the huge success of Street Fighter II, would offer
gamers a wide variety of fighting games to choose from, and some developers would even
try to go beyond what was traditional for this genre.
In Oni we fight these extremely powerful bosses, that are so hard to beat, that we could even
invite a friend to join in and play in co-op!
And the sprites and art style are so amazingly beautiful!
Don't you agree?
Sadly, and as you've might imagined, the success formula of traditional fighting games
was broken in this game.
Playing one-on-one against friends was what attracted players to the fighting genre, and
that ingredient was completely left aside in this one.
Even so, try it in co-op!
It's really worth it!
Dead Connection
Did you watch the movie The Untouchables, from 1987, directed by Brian de Palma
and starred by Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia?
The two main characters from Dead Connection really does strike some resemblance to those
two actors from The Untouchables, don't you also agree?
Dead Connection was developed and released by Taito back in 1992, this shoot-'em up
in where we simply have to clear New York from all bad guys.
There are four selectable characters for up to two players and each level demands that
we take down a certain number of thugs, and, being a shoot-'em up, Dead Connection is
a bit different from the traditional side scrolling action that this genre is know for.
Every stage happens in one single screen, but don't let that fool you!
The layouts for every stage are really nice and diverse and the scenery turns to pieces
during the gun fights!
I would've loved to play Dead Connection, back in the day, on my Mega Drive, but it's
a total mystery why it was never converted to home systems.

Desert Breaker
Also, by 1992, Sega released this run-and-gun clone of Mercs, by the name Desert Breaker.
And that was probably the main reason for being extremely rare and never converted to
home systems of the time.
For instance, why did Sega license and ported Mercs to the Mega Drive and not their own
Desert Breaker?
They were scared of a lawsuit, that's why!
Controversy aside, I see it as an homage to Mercs, going further and expanding its formula
with its own tweaks and tricks, like being able to flee from a highly complicated fight,
granting a temporary invincibility and speed.
Weapons can also be upgraded and we can even trade our grenades for special firearms.
So, if you're a fan of Mercs and other similar titles, you must try Desert Breaker.
It's probably the pinnacle of the vertical run-and-gun style!
