New Zealand—the destination of choice

for fabulously wealthy Chinese.

After the United States, Australia, Thailand,

Canada, and the UK.

That's why I came to New Zealand.

To see all it has to offer!

My first stop was in Karaka.

I came to see this stunning, brand-new,

ultra-modern 4,000 square foot, luxury lifestyle home,

sitting on 10 acres of lush countryside.

With four sun-drenched bedrooms,

an expansive high-end kitchen,

and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Plus a heated saltwater pool complete with gas fireplace.

I couldn't wait to get the tour.

So what does a home like this go for?

Well this property is going to auction

and we would expect interest

at upwards of three million.

It is a brand new home,

it's only one and a half years old.

Everything's brand new here.

Wow.

Similar properties have sold in the

four to five million dollars around the area.

Four to five million dollars in the area?

Yes.

So it is a premium area in Karaka.

Is New Zealand still a hot property market for Chinese buyers?

I think New Zealand will always be

a hot property market for Chinese buyers

because of what it offers.

Why are they attracted to this area?

I think it's due to, well,

it's the beautiful environment that Karaka offers,

the lovely openness,

green pastures, fresh air.

There's a very good private school close by,

we do have quite a lot of Chinese people looking in the area.

How many homes in the area

are going to Chinese buyers?

Well, the Chinese buyers,

they've been in the market quite some time now.

I haven't got a percentage

but the last two properties that I've sold in Karaka

have been to Chinese buyers.

How have Chinese buyer affected the property market?

They've offered...

yeah, certainly they've offered competition for local buyers.

Has that affected the prices of the houses at all?

A little bit, yes, yes.

Yes, it has.

Turns out, more than a bit.

According to this report from the Economist,

New Zealand has the most unaffordable houses in the world.

Prices have jumped 75 percent in four years,

largely because of foreign buyers.

And the majority of those are Chinese.

Karaka was so nice that I was thinking of

becoming a foreign buyer myself.

But I couldn't spend all day lounging by

the heated saltwater pool.

I had more luxury homes to visit.

So I was off to Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city,

to check out one of its most sought-after neighborhoods.

I spoke with real estate agent Diana West.

She offered to show me a 3 million dollar suburban home.

It was...a different kind of luxury.

So this house will most likely go for over 3 million dollars?

Absolutely

And so what is the draw to a location like this?

Is it the stunning luxury lifestyle?

Well when you get rid of this and build your luxury home it will be.

But it's the location for the school zones,

you've got Auckland Grammar, Ipsen Girls Grammar,

so it's actually the land value here.

Because it's such, once you get rid of this house,

and build two luxury homes here,

they will be worth easily $3.5 million dollars each.

In this property market,

how many homes are going to Chinese buyers?

I'd say probably 80-90%.

80-90$?!

How has that affected the property prices?

Well it's driven them up hugely

because we've got an influx of population

and seemingly with a lot of funds available

and that has actually driven out a lot of the local buyers.

Has that caused resentment?

Yeah it does.

For a number of years in fact,

the local Kiwi people wouldn't come to auctions

because they said what's the point?

We're going to get beaten so yeah,

there has been resentment.

Okay, so 10 years ago

how much would a house like this have gone for?

Probably a million.

A million.

So prices have basically doubled.

Or tripled in this case.

Because what's happened in the meantime

was the council has changed all the zoning rules,

so you've got properties like this

that would have just been one house,

and now have the ability for multiple dwellings.

Are Chinese buyers still as interested in this market?

There has been a little cooling.

We find in general the Chinese are the first to get on the bandwagon

when they perceive there's a lot of growth in the market,

and then, in general,

they are the first to recede and start to become cautious

when they see the market plateauing

and that's what we believe we're doing at the moment.

The market is cooling a bit.

Yes  it is, a little bit.

Do you think it will ever go back to the pricing of 10 years ago,

before the influx of Chinese buyers.

No, no there's just too much population pressure in Auckland.

Okay.

Particularly in these well sought after suburbs.

Trying to tackle this problem,

the government proposed new laws

regulating foreign buyers.

But Diana thinks its too little too late.

There are proposed laws

that would restrict foreign buyers.

Do you see that affecting the market?

No I don't,

I think it's a bit like shutting the gate

after the horse has bolted.

The real change we saw here

was when they brought in the Bright-Line Tax rules several years ago,

and that requirement was for people

to have a New Zealand bank account

and a New Zealand IRD number,

and that stopped a lot of the foreign speculation

happening from people who did not live here

because they couldn't comply with those rules.

And so that's when we stopped seeing all that happening.

So really, the people who have been buying

for the last couple of years

are generally resident or applying for residency.

So I don't see this ban on foreign ownership

having any difference at all.

I realized that to be able to afford property in New Zealand,

I would need to be fabulously wealthy

to be just moderately well off.

Which gives me an idea....

Banana and Tapioca Pearls in Coconut Milk Dessert - Morgane Recipes - Duration: 4:18.

This Vietnamese dessert

offers an appealing combination of ingredients:

the sweetness and creaminess of sweet coconut milk,

the fragrance of banana and roasted sesame seeds

and the texture of tapioca pearls.

Soak the tapioca pearls in cold water for 10 minutes.

After absorbing water, the pearls will cook faster.

Drain them.

Cook them in boiling water for 8 minutes,

stirring them often.

Cut the fire, the pearls have become transparent.

Wait a few seconds for the pearls to go down to the bottom of the pan.

Do not drain them right now,

because the pearls that have just been cooked will stick to the colander.

Lean the pan to remove the hot water without throwing the pearls.

Add cold water and let sit for 1 hour.

The pearls size will increase.

This pearl cooking technique

prevents the dessert from becoming compact and pasty once cooled.

Meanwhile, grill the sesame seeds for 3 minutes over low heat,

without stopping stirring.

Put them in a bowl and let them cool.

Blend them roughly to help releasing their perfume.

Peel the bananas.

Choose bananas not too ripe,

otherwise they would crush during cooking.

Cut them into chunks.

Filter the tapioca pearls.

Put the bananas in 25cl of boiling water,

Then add: The salt,

The sugar,

The tapioca pearls,

The coconut milk

Mix and leave on medium heat for 7 minutes.

Cut the fire and let it cool for 15 minutes.

Serve in a bowl for each guest.

Sprinkle over one teaspoon of toasted sesame seeds.

Language and the Arrow of Time - Duration: 18:49.

Welcome to the Endless Knot!

Today we're going to look at the direction of time and see if the word arrow can point

the way!

"Time flies like an arrow".

We all know that's not literally true, but it's easily understood by any English speaker.

It's a way of talking about an abstract (time) in terms of something more concrete

(place).

Why do we push meetings back, look forward to tomorrow, fall behind schedule, wait a

long time, and take a short break?.

These ways of understanding the world, known as spatio-temporal metaphors, are introduced

to us so early that they seem completely natural and objective truths, but in fact they're

different from culture to culture, and looking at them closely can open up all sorts of fascinating

avenues to explore.

The phrase time's arrow was coined by English astronomer, physicist, and mathematician Sir

Arthur Eddington in 1928 to describe the asymmetry of time, always flowing from the past to the

future, though the similar phrase arrow of time had already been used in 1917 colloquially

to refer to the ever-flowing nature of time.

Eddington had noted that at the microscopic level processes could be time-symmetric operating

in either direction without breaking any physical laws, but at the macroscopic level things

operated in one direction only, toward the future.

For Eddington this was the result of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics: the

total entropy of a closed system never decreases over time, or to put it another way a closed

system always moves from order to disorder.

Why this asymmetry exists, and why it doesn't on the microscopic level, is still an unsolved

question in physics.

This arrow of time can be seen in many areas of science, including psychology.

We perceive time in only one direction.

We know the past, not the future.

So the cognitive arrow of time, and the language we use to describe it, points in one direction.

However, as we'll see, that direction is variable.

And since we're using an arrow, something that points a direction in space, as a metaphor

to describe which way time points, we should first have a look at the word arrow, and the

arrow as a physical object, and see how it became a symbol, and eventually a metaphor

used in both thought and language to construct our understanding of time.

The word arrow comes from Old English forms earh and arwe (which may have been influenced

in form by Old Norse), which go back to Proto-Germanic *arkhwo and Proto-Indo-European *arku-.

The curious thing about the root *arku- is that it seems to have meant bow and/or arrow.

In the Germanic languages, like English, it produced words with the sense "arrow",

but in Latin it produced arcus meaning "bow", which came down through French and into English

giving us archer and archery, but also arc and arch because of the bow-like shape these

words describe.

The word bow, on the other hand, comes from the Proto-Indo-European root *bheug- "to

bend" because of its curved shape.

The Latin word for arrow is sagitta, of unknown origin, possibly from a pre-Latin Mediterranean

language, from which we get the word Sagittarius, the zodiac constellation representing a centaur

with a bow and arrow.

But we'll come back to this word and astrology and other forms of predicting the future.

The bow and arrow is a very ancient technology.

The earliest archaeological evidence of the arrow, which may or may not have been shot

from a bow, was found in the Sibudu cave, located in what is now South Africa, in which

were also found a number of other technological firsts, such as the earliest bed, the earliest

needle, and the earliest compound glue.

This arrow dates to about 64,000 years ago, but the earliest conclusive evidence of an

arrow meant to be shot from a bow, shown by the groove in its base, dates to about 10,000

years ago.

The technology spread worldwide (except perhaps Australia) and was widely used for both hunting

and warfare.

In terms of archery in warfare in the western tradition, it can be found in Greek mythology

(Herakles and Odysseus are both associated with the bow, and it appears in Homeric battles),

but by the later classical period, when formation fighting was predominant, archery in warfare

fell out of use in many Greek cities, and was even associated with foreignness (for

instance the Persians used archers).

Initially archery wasn't really a part of Roman warfare either, but later in the history

of the Empire, the Romans gradually used auxiliary archers drawn from parts of the empire that

did have a history of archery in warfare.

And it could be said that one of the factors of the collapse of the western empire was

the threat posed by the devastatingly effective mounted archers of the Huns.

During the European middle ages archers became important on the battlefield but there was

a class distinction: the nobility were knights, heavily armoured mounted cavalry, because

maintaining the equipment for this, including the horse, was very expensive, and all the

famous stories of chivalry involved the noble class of the knights, whereas the archers

were of the lower classes (Robin Hood and his gang were outlaws so their weapon was

appropriately the bow and arrow).

But eventually the archers won the day, being the decisive factors in battles between the

English and the French such as the Battle of Crécy and the Battle of Agincourt, made

famous in Shakespeare's Henry V, with the English longbow marking the beginning of the

end of the age of chivalry.

Of course archery too became obsolete as firearms were developed, and this is only the briefest

of historical accounts of the bow and arrow, which could also have included for instance

archery in Asia or the Americas or anywhere else in the world.

And there are places named arrow, companies named arrow, and vehicles named arrow, such

as the ship Arrow which was detained in 1856 sparking the Arrow War between Britain and

China, better known as the Second Opium War, and the Avro Arrow fighter jet prototype which

was designed by a Canadian company in the 1950's but ordered destroyed by the Canadian

government in favour of US-designed fighters amid much controversy and even conspiracy

theories.

But we're going to leave these aside and take aim at the arrow as symbol, specifically

a typographical symbol.

As a symbol the arrow shape mimicked the shape of a real arrow, a shaft with a triangular

arrowhead at one end and the fletching (the feathery stabilizing fins) at the other, but

gradually over time the shape became abstracted and streamlined.

There were of course precursors to the arrow symbol that served the same role of pointing

to something, such as picture of a footprint next to a woman's face carved into the pavement

in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus in the first century CE: follow the direction of

the footprint and you'll find the local brothel.

Moving on from feet, if fingers are more your thing, medieval manuscripts are the place

to look.

The image of a pointing finger, called a manicule from Latin manus "hand", was frequently

used in manuscripts to mark or divide sections in the text, a practise that dates back to

the 12th century.

Similarly the Portuguese cartographer Pedro Reinel seems to have established the use of

the fleur-de-lis on the compass rose pointing the cardinal directions, north, south, east,

west.

But the arrow as a typographical symbol really only dates back to the 18th century.

For instance in 1737, the French engineer and pioneer of hydraulics Bernard Forest de

Bélidor published a treatise called Hydraulic Architecture which included technical diagrams

with arrows to indicate the flow of water in the machines.

Interestingly, one of Bélidor's other claims to fame was that he worked for a while on

calculating the arc, that is the curvature, of the earth, and the word arc as we've

seen is related to arrow.

Similarly the German illustrator and engraver Friedrich Bernhard Werner began to use arrows

to indicate the direction of the flow of rivers in his maps and illustrations.

And over time as the arrow symbol became more abstracted it could be put to more and more

uses.

In the 19th century English cartographer Emil Reich used triangular arrowheads along curved

lines to show the movement of troops on maps of battles that accompanied John Richard Green's

A Short History of the English People.

And in the 20th century arrows began to be used in logic and mathematical notation, such

as German mathematician David Hilbert's 1922 introduction of the arrow to indicate

logical implication, and a decade later Albrecht Becker's use of the double-headed arrow

to indicate logical equivalence.

And in 1976 mathematician Donald Knuth introduced up-arrow notation for indicating very large

numbers.

And in linguistics, angle brackets or the greater-than and less-than symbols can be

used as arrows to indicate etymological relationships indicating that a word or sound developed

into another over time.

And of course in this very video I've used the famed red arrow in the thumbnail, which

popular You Tube belief has it will increase the views of the video (we'll see if it

works).

So ultimately the arrow can be used as a symbol to indicate or point to something, to show

direction, or to represent some other type of relationship that at least metaphorically

has some sense of directionality to it.

So let's pause for a moment and consider the words symbol and metaphor.

Symbol comes, through Latin, from Greek symbolon "sign or token".

The word originally came to English with a religious context meaning "creed or religious

belief" as the Creed was a "mark" distinguishing Christians from pagans, only gaining its modern

senses of something that stands for something else in the late 16th century and of a written

character in the beginning of the 17th.

The Greek word is made up of two elements, syn "together" and bole "a throwing",

from the verb ballein "to throw".

So a symbol is literally "a throwing of things together", which thus came to mean

a "comparison" and therefore a "sign of whether something is genuine" or "outward

sign".

This idea of comparison is even more evident in the related word parable, which comes from

Greek parabole "juxtaposition or comparison", literally a "throwing beside".

And fittingly for our purposes, Greek ballein is related to the Greek word belos, which

means "arrow".

And from Greek belos we get the English word belomancy, which is a form of divination or

fortunetelling using arrows.

This was a common practise in a number of ancient civilizations including the Greeks,

the Babylonians, the Arabs and the Scythians, and could be performed in a number of ways,

such as tying possible answers to a given question to arrows and seeing which one flew

the farthest.

And this of course brings us back to fortunetelling again and that astrological symbol Sagittarius,

so let's take a quick look at the word fortune as all our arrows converge on the target.

Fortune comes from Latin fortuna meaning "chance, fate, good luck", which was also personified

as Fortuna the goddess of fate with her Wheel of Fortune.

The word fortuna is derived from another Latin word, fors meaning "chance or luck", which

seems to come from the Proto-Indo-European root *bher- "to carry", a root which also

gives us the English verb to bear and the Latin verb ferre "to carry".

So how then did a root meaning "to carry" produce a word meaning "chance or fate"?

Well if this etymology is correct it would be from the notion of "that which is brought",

so then fortune would literally mean "what fate brings".

And interestingly, that same Proto-Indo-European root also came into Greek as pherein "to

carry or bear" which when combined with meta meaning "over or across", leads to

the verb metapherein "to transfer or carry over", especially in the rhetorical sense

of transferring a word to a new sense, and the noun metaphora "transference".

So in a sense, the word metaphor is a metaphor, from physically carrying something across

to metaphorically carrying over a meaning.

And a metaphor is another type of comparison like a symbol.

So finally let's now return to the spatio-temporal metaphors I mentioned in the beginning, and

see how languages talk about time by comparing it to space.

Because the important thing to realise here is that metaphor is not just a literary technique,

but is in fact a way of thinking.

This was an idea most famously pioneered by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in their 1980

book Metaphors We Live By.

We use metaphor to map understanding from one more concrete domain of experience onto

another more abstract domain.

It's how we get around the problem of thinking about, and speaking about, abstractions.

For instance we borrow from the concrete experience of space to think and speak about time.

What's particularly interesting about this is that different cultures and languages use

different spatial metaphors to think and talk about time, a fact that in recent years has

been explored by cognitive scientists and linguists, such as Lera Boroditsky.

And as it turns out, that arrow of time can be pointed in a number of different directions.

For instance, if you were given a set of pictures that showed different temporal states, like

say a whole apple, an apple with a bite out of it, a half-eaten apple, and an apple core,

and were told to put them in order, if you're an English speaker you'll probably line

them up in front of you from left to right.

But if you're an Arabic speaker you'll probably lay them out right to left, so in

this case it seems that writing direction influences the direction of that arrow of

time, and this seems to hold true for many other languages as well.

These metaphors may even begin before literacy, given that even pre-literate children are

aware that the story in a picture book progresses from left to right as they are read to.

But they don't necessarily map onto other types of temporal thinking, or the language

we use to describe them—for instance, we would never say that Friday is to the left

of Saturday.

Instead, in that sort of situation, in English we use a front-back metaphor when speaking

of time: the past lies behind us and the future lies ahead, we think back on our past and

look forward to the future: Friday is before Saturday.

But the arrow can also point vertically, as Boroditsky found.

In Mandarin, the past can be viewed as up and the future as down.

So for instance the "up month" is "last month" and the "down month" is "next

month".

And when given the same task of ordering pictures, Mandarin speakers were much more likely to

arrange them in a vertical column in front of them.

Now all of these left-right, front-back, and up-down arrangements are relative to the body

of the person using the metaphor.

So in English when we talk about the future being ahead of us and the past behind, we're

using the sagittal plane, from that Latin word sagitta meaning "arrow".

But there are in fact other ways of arranging that arrow without reference to the body,

as Lera Boroditsky and Alice Gaby discovered.

In the languages of Pormpuraaw Australia, such as Kuuk Thaayorre, body-relative spatial

words aren't used but instead the cardinal directions, north, south, east, west.

You wouldn't, for instance refer to your right leg but to your north leg.

People who speak these languages have to always remain oriented in absolute space in order

to use their language.

And what's more, this carries over into their temporal reasoning as well.

When given that same task with the pictures, they would always arrange them east to west,

mirroring the course of the sun in the sky, so a row running left to right if they were

facing north, or a column top to bottom if facing east.

And there seem to be a variety of other shapes and spatial arrangements for time as well,

such as concentric, near and far, up and down hill, and so forth.

Now in English as we've seen, we're accustomed to talking about time in the sagittal axis,

back to front relative to our bodies, with the future in front of us and the past behind.

But this also isn't the only direction that arrow can point.

There are some languages that locate the past in front and the future behind, due to the

fact that we know what has already happened, but can't "see" the future.

This has long been suggested of Ancient Greek, with the word opiso meaning "backward"

in reference to space but "in the future" in reference to time.

A similar claim has been made of the Madagascar language Malagasy (according to Øyvind Dahl),

and other languages as well.

While there has been some criticism of these claims, Núñez and Sweetser very convincingly

demonstrated that this is the case in the South American language Aymara.

The nice thing about their research is that they draw not only on linguistic evidence

of this metaphor, but gestural evidence as well.

And there is one last issue relating to our spatio-temporal arrangements: how movement

is used to think about the passage of time.

One can think either of time moving, as if you are watching a river flow towards you,

as in "the holidays are approaching", or ego-moving, as if you yourself are moving along a path,

as in "we're rapidly coming to the end of the year".

In English, both of these metaphors are available, though this isn't necessarily true in all

languages.

And it turns out, you draw on spatial reasoning actively, so that if you are already predisposed

to thinking of yourself moving in space, by say going on a journey, you are more likely

to think of yourself moving through time.

This sort of thing can affect how we interpret ambiguous phrases such as the sentence "let's

move Wednesday's meeting back two days".

Does this mean the meeting is now on Monday or Friday?

It depends on whether you are thinking from a time-moving perspective or an ego-moving

perspective.

And as a final treat, I'll give you a very brief sampling of my own ongoing research

on spatio-temporal metaphor in Old English.

The full story is much more complex than this, but for now I'll just focus on a few words

meaning past, present, and future, specifically forðgewiten, andweard, and toweard.

Let's start with the word toweard which in terms of physical space can mean "facing,

approaching" or "towards, forwards" but when referring to time means "future",

so the toweard tid is future time, or in grammatical terms the "future tense" (though as we

know, English doesn't really have one of those!).

The word is made up of the elements to which means more or less what to does today, and

weard which means something like "turned toward" coming ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European

root *wert- "to turn".

We still have that element in modern English words like northward, and of course the word

toward itself.

The word andweard means "physically present" or "opposite, facing" and in reference

to time means "the present".

Literally it breaks down in to the elements and or ond meaning "against, opposite"

and that same weard meaning "turned".

And finally forðgewiten is the past participle of the verb forðgewitan "to go forward

or depart", with gewitan on its own meaning "depart".

That prefix forð means basically what you would expect from Modern English, "forth"

or "forward", so the directionality of forðgewiten is perhaps the opposite of what

we might have expected for a word referring to the past.

Forð on its own can be used in temporal senses as well, referring in those cases to a future

time, much like we would say henceforth in Modern English, or in compounds, such as forðweard

literally "forth-turned" used to mean "onward in time, henceforth, or in the future"

and forðgesceaft literally "forth-creation" used to mean "future state or condition".

Putting it all to together then, the future (toweard) is approaching or turned toward

time, the present (andweard) is physically present or turned against time, and the past

(forðgewiten) is the departing time.

And what this suggests is that the metaphor being used, in these words at least, is one

of arriving, being present, and departing.

There are of course a number of other spatial words used metaphorically to refer to time

in Old English, but this gives an idea of what is going on with some of the main ones.

What's important to note here is that the basic words used to refer to the three times

in Old English are different from those in Modern English which are borrowed from French,

ultimately from Latin, and are thus not native Germanic words.

So this raises some questions: do spatio-temporal metaphors change over time as language changes,

and if so how and why?

Well, I don't know the answers to those questions yet, but as time goes by along that

forward-pointing arrow, I hope to learn more — and I'll report back!

does now, and do it far swifter, if it can learn much more quickly, if it can compete

and, in fact, do everything that man can � except of course look at the beautiful evening star

So predicted Krishnamurti a decade-and-a-half before the emergence of the Internet. I have

previously written about technology�s ability to disconnect us from ourselves. Today, I

would like to explore this a bit further.

WE ARE RATS IN A TECHNOLOGICAL LABYRINTH After performing a series of experiments with

hungry rats locked in a box with a lever, behavioral psychologist B. F. Skinner coined

a term known as �Schedules of Reinforcement� or �Intermittent Reinforcement�.

The experimented went as follows; The rats were divided into two groups The first group

was the Fixed Schedule group who received a food pellet after pressing the lever a fixed

amount of times, say 20. In the second group, known as the Variable Schedule group, the

rat earned the food pellet after it pressed the lever a random number of times. Sometimes

it would receive the food after pressing 10 times, and sometimes after pressing 200 times.

To the second group, the arrival of food was unpredictable. This made the addiction or

reinforcement to the lever a lot more stronger. Skinner found that the first group of rats

stopped pressing the lever almost immediately after the food stopped being supplied. The

second group however was a lot more motivated, and they kept on pressing the lever for a

very long time afterwards.

After returning from our Involution workshops in Europe where I spent 3 months with no smartphone

at all, I�ve become noticeably more aware of the tendency in myself and others of checking

our phone constantly like rats waiting for that stimulating fix; that latest Facebook

message, status or photo, email, or latest shocking news headline.

Most of the emails and Facebook updates are junk, but every now and again you will get

that one little pellet that makes checking your phone once every 10 minutes worthwhile.

THE HEART OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL LABYRINTH One of the feelings that stood out the most

from my technological minimalist experience (a candle lit house with no televisions in

a 2 km radius), is that I found it a lot easier to center myself.

My mind felt a lot more clear and inspired; I found it a lot easier to be mindful, to

find the heart, the center of myself.

I�ve experienced something very similar when researching information. When I Google

something, as you expect, I get a �Googol� of results. Although I have more information

at my disposal, I feel I am retaining a lot less than I do when I solely focus all my

attention on a single book of that particular topic.

Linda Stone, a former employee of Apple and Microsoft, has coined the term �continuous

partial attention� to describe life in the era of e-mail, instant messaging, cellphones,

and other distractions. And it is this �continuous partial attention� that I feel exactly reflects

my own dilemma.

Whenever I immerse myself into an activity, I must do it with the fullest of my heart,

with all of my focus and attention encapsulating that action. It is here that spiritual mindfulness

comes into play.

ESCAPE FROM THE TECHNOLOGICAL LABYRINTH Can externally focused technology and internally

focused mindfulness co-exist? I think they not only can, but they must.

Technology is a tool, an instrument to make our lives easier and better. But it has its

limitations. Technology cannot fulfill us spiritually, it cannot makes us feel more

connected with ourselves � only with the external world.

For spiritual mindfulness to become relevant to our modern day lives, we first have to

separate them from the supernatural and mystical baggage that makes them so difficult for us

to accept.

The moment will come when, as technology simplifies our work and our lives, we will realize that

just like in the Pixar movie �WALL-E� � physical comfort and mental stimulation

isn�t enough. That we want to feel more meaningful experiences in life than having

someone �Like� our witty status updates every few hours.

That moment will see technology reach the point where computers will be able to outperform

us, and humans will scratch their heads and ask themselves � What now?

Technology will never be able to write beautiful poetry like Blake, it will never be able to

compose musical pieces like Bach. That is our purpose with soulwork, to focus our attention

on our inner world, our emotions, our thoughts and passionate desire to express them, that

is what we will have left. That is all that we will have left.

To live with greater presence, meaning, and mindfulness in the technology age is what

we must strive for.

A few years ago a neighbor asked me why I cut my lawn with a push-mower. I told him

that motor-operated lawn mowers are corrupting society; that life is an infinite lawn, a

composition of unexciting simple moments with a few �spikes� of stimulation here and

there.

Cutting the lawn this way has taught me to cultivate patience, to enjoy a task that is

found a chore by most. Trying to get it over and done with as quickly as possible steals

you of the opportunity to engage in the feelings of falling in love with the smells, the textures,

the light formations, sounds and everything that simply existing offers.

The paradox is that the more you accept the unexciting aspects of life, the more exciting

they become.

Unless we learn to embrace these mundane moments, without avoidance or frustration, without

trying to escape the lack of stimulation that this very moment presents, we will never find

peace and will insatiably hit that smartphone lever chasing after that food pellet.

1936 what would we do without it? Well, to be honest. We probably have far less instances of skin cancer

Yes, you heard that right we'd have less skin cancer more people are diagnosed every year with skin cancer than all the other cancers combined

Skin cancer has grown into a highly profitable

8.1 billion dollar a year industry over the last 20 years

instances of skin cancer have increased over

300 percent according to the American Cancer Society one person now dies of melanoma every hour

There's something really strange about this to me, especially since during this exact same time period we've seen a massive

population level epidemic in vitamin D deficiencies

One of the reasons of which researchers claim is due to decreased sun exposure

so why are we getting more skin cancer than ever while we're

Decreasing our exposure to the Sun seems fishy as a disclaimer to this video

I personally think skin cancer is much more complex than just involving chemical exposure to the skin

The topic that I'm gonna discuss in this video today is just about the chemical exposure

The full extent of skin cancer is likely linked to factors from the diet chemicals on the skin

micronutrient deficiencies stress and atmospheric pollution a

Multifaceted cause however today I'm gonna expose a huge truth that cannot be ignored any longer

commercial sunscreens all contain several chemicals that our US government classified carcinogens

I'm about to show you actual chemicals that you can find in nearly every mainstream sunscreen

We've been told to use since we were kids that are well known in government and research circles to cause cancer in humans

Why these are still being sold to us as a cancer prevention? I have no idea. You can make your own conclusions about that

there's so much shady stuff going on these days with poisoning our health that

Sometimes it's difficult to really wrap my head around how all these things seem to always be pointing back to the same sources

conspiracy aside

Let's look at the cold hard facts the following common sunscreen chemicals cause cancer

Tumor growth free radical damage and are all well known endocrine disrupting substances chemical number one

benzophenone

Well, first off benzophenone is actually a known cancer-causing agent on the top 65 list in california you can find

That right on the internet quick google search in this study right here. The researchers showed the carcinogenicity of

Benzophenone in experimental animals, apparently no human subjects were available for testing

I wonder why obviously don't want to be doing that and they don't want to be showing people that this study right here on benzophenone

Showed that and this is crazy breast cancer cells when exposed to benzophenone caused massive

Augmentation it literally made the cancer cells grow a measurable amount during the study

this study right here showed an increase in the case of renal cancer in male rats in an increase in leukemia and

Nephropathy. So there's this big, you know issue with this chemical on the kidney

This study's pretty significant and really supports the carcinogenesis involved with this chemical and your exposure to this chemical

Ensure that the chemical makeup of this chemical can actually inhibit thyroid

peroxidase and therefore inhibit the thyroid hormone pathway in general

This may be a contributor to the current huge

Hypothyroidism epidemic that's going on a population level right now

And this is actually even more pronounced in cases where people are deficient in iodide

The second chemical we have is for MBC are there million names for this thing?

So it can show up under a lot of different names

This study showed a variety of chemicals in the breast tissue including the 4nbc in women that were undergoing a mastectomy

Out of the seven women who had the 4nbc concentrations present in their breasts six of them

Actually had it at the at the tumor site. So it was it was showing up where the tumors were growing

This study showed that with dermal exposure to hairless hairless rats. The rats actually had a dose-dependent

Increase in uterine weight from the 4mbc this study right here

related the 4mbc along with a couple other UV filters these other chemicals that I'm mentioning here to a greater indication of

neuroblastoma and showed that they have some gonadal and thyroid hormone inhibiting

effects so

reproductive and thyroid hormones again

A lot of this goes back to all these chemicals are damaging our reproductive hormones and they're damaging our thyroid

So the third chemical is Avobenzone

again, a lot of different names that this can can slide under I mean if you see anything like any of these names

You know with these crazy chemical formulas like I shouldn't be around your skin. That's just common sense

This stay right here showed that there was a massive amount of free radical production

when this chemical was specifically exposed to the Sun so

This chemical supposed to protect you from the Sun and when it is exposed to the Sun it

Degrades immediately and turns into a huge free radical stress on your skin. Okay, that makes sense

Dad, you're so sunburned. I can't move because it hurts too bad. Oh

This is awful

so this study right here showed that the use of

The Avobenzone along with a few other of these these chemicals that I'm mentioning are here in combination

So basically a sunscreen caused an increase in the production of inflammatory cytokines

Which the cytokines are basically a huge biomarker indicator of inflammation

including tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 6

The study also indicated and they they mentioned that these signaling pathways were increased between 2 and 10 fold

so massive massive increases

so Chemical number 4 is

Homosalate again different names for it that it can go under in this this handbook of cancer prevention on page 21

They list that the in vivo effects of this chemical on the fact that it actually does have a mutagenesis

effect for increasing

instances of cancer they concluded that since it was just

During the use of sunscreen and just in vivo that it should be safe to use. However, I'm not really sure what that means

I mean he's showing to cause cancer when you use it from sunscreen, so I'm not sure how that's safe

Whatever these recommendations you gotta take stuff with a grain of salt with some of this research recommendations

You have to use a little bit of your own common sense. All right, the chemical number five. We got octo cry lean

So this study right here showed that again octo cry lean in combination with these other

UV filter chemicals that I'm talking about here

increased reactive oxygen species production on the skin at about the 60-minute mark

the amount of reactive oxygen species are OS on the skin exceeded that of the

Control group so it took about an hour to get a massive boost in the basically free radical damage on the skin

So the study right here showed

Again a large when exposure to octo crying a large increase of free radicals

An in cumulation of free radicals on the skin when there was an increase in exposure and then this article right here

from the dermatology review

It showed that there was a paradox with this chemical causing free radical damage on the skin

even though it was meant to reduce the amount of free radicals produced and

You know, there was a claim that it is a minimal side effect

However, you know several studies showing the same exact same effect when people use the octa-pie lean

they're literally increasing free radical damage and inflammation on the skin when exposed to sun so

Alright the next chemical is octane NOx 8 and

octa NOx 8 has been shown in this study that it's gonna produce free radicals and more free radicals on the skin as well as

when it's combined with the AVA benzo and it persisted and they had to stop the exposure to this chemical because

It got so bad in that study

And since you guys know that I really heavily believe that the key to health is hormone optimization

I put together a list here of the hormone disrupting side effects of these chemicals as well and there are a lot of them so

Let's go through

Benzophenone as well. This study showed that basically the uterine weights of the subjects were increased fourfold

before X when exposed to

Phenome this study right here showed that benzophenone itself was able to attach itself to the estrogen receptor

Literally to bind the estrogen receptor and had these uterine trophic effects which uterine growth effects on rats

Who were overreact amazed?

Pronounce that correctly said that basically that their ovaries taken out. So it was like independent of having ovaries

So they went all the way to the genetic level to look at the effect that this had on the hormonal pathways of the male

Zebrafish before you guys say anything. I mean they picked these animals for a reason

common endocrine and neuronal

subject for a lot of studies because of

Similarities in the in the nervous system to humans

So it showed that the chemical this benzophenone caused estrogenic activity and the embryos and the brains of the fish

So the European Commission is also listed benzophenone as a chemical that has the potential to cause endocrine disruption

So it's well known by governments. So this study right here showed a dose-dependent

increase in estrogen receptor binding of benzophenone

With the derivative that was competing with the 17 beta estradiol molecule and it basically supports the claim

That this benzophenone chemical is a xenoestrogen that does bind human estrogen receptors

All right. Now for NBC also has some research showing its endocrine disrupting effects this study

They included these other chemicals as well

but they showed that there were negative effects induced by these chemicals and animals which include reproductive effects and

developmental toxicity and disruption of the hypothalamic pituitary thyroid act axis

very very important axis anything that's damaging your hypothalamic pituitary axis in general which communicates with your thyroid with your

and with your gonads and with your kidneys and

You know other organs anything that disrupts the hypothalamic pituitary axis is no no good

so this study right here again on the male zebrafish showed that exposure to the benzophenone and

Camphor UV UV filters like for NBC had a massive feminization effect. So they basically

Saw that it caused this Vitello genin

Which is a blood protein that's usually only present and in females it caused an increase in males and it caused

Alterations in the gonads along with the decrease in fertility and reproduction

So if you want to castrate yourself as a guy you might as well go you can go rub some 4nbc on your skin

So this study showed that for NBC compact the the compound itself can elicit

estrogen receptor alpha and beta activity

So this study on the medaka, which is a Japanese fish showed an increase in

Production of this Vitello gen and again and Coria Jenin which are basically female blood proteins

They're highly expressed in the female

you know ecosystem like biological ecosystem as well as an increase in the mRNA expression of

estrogen receptor alpha in the liver

so this study showed that there was actually a decrease of testosterone levels after the application of

This for NBC and other sunscreens so literally putting - putting sunscreen on your skin is going to decrease your testosterone levels

Alright, so a home oscillate. We've got a few studies here

This study took six of these these UV filters including Hamas elite and they all had estrogenic effects and endocrine disrupting

Effects they were able to bind to estrogen receptor sites in different

Pathways in the bodies then in the body than regular estrogen molecules

So it had a more far-reaching estrogenic effect than even regular, you know

An endogenous estrogen so study took a look at 18 different UV filters again

Including Hamas elite and they showed that every single one of them has an estrogenic effect. Most of them having multiple effects

Not just one single estrogen effect

So it has far-reaching effects the study right here showed and they looked at a couple of these

salicylate compounds that can be found in sunscreens as well as a couple of the camp for compounds they found

distinctive estrogenic and

Anti-angiogenic activity again why we rubbing this stuff on our skin. Come on

So a study was done and they found the estrogenic

effects again of all these filters including the mas late and they looked at the androgen receptor effects of the filters the

anti-androgen

Effects of these compounds included the inhibition of gene expression of the DHT induced luciferase molecule and a few others as well

this study showed that the effect that musk fragrances have

So one thing with Hamas Lee it can be found in clones and stuff that had a negative effect on it

He'll basically it increased estrogen at a bad effect on the androgen levels and on the productive hormone progesterone

showed that they

Inhibit the s receptor alpha that they inhibit androgen receptors and they inhibit progesterone receptors

So auto cry lean

basically

they exposed in this study the exposed Auto Carlene to rats and

A couple of these other chemicals that were fed pre mating during pregnancy post pregnancy

With these chemicals the neonatal effect was an enlarged prostate

delayed puberty

Altered uterine gene expression and they all all these chemicals affected the reproductive organ weights

And as if this is not bad enough this study right here showed that the use of sunscreen

increased the skin absorption of herbicides and pesticides

When it was used so let's add some more heavy metals and endocrine disruptors to the mix

Why don't we so the skin is our largest organ? Obviously see it's the most absorbable and reactive to the outside world

Why the hell would we want to rub all this nasty shit on our skin directly into our blood streams?

Now most of you at this point are probably wondering what you could do to naturally protect yourself from the Sun

How to build your character - Part 2: Equipment and stats - Duration: 12:05.

Ahoy!

This is the second part of the "how to build your character" video series.

In this video I'm going to talk about equipment and stats: which item you need, what you should

aim for in its craft options and slots, and what your goal should be with each of the

important stats.

First of all, let's talk about critical rate.

The higher, the better basically.

Initially you should aim to get 50%, but later on the ideal for dungeon farming in parties

is probably 69%.

Why 69?

Well warrior's debuff called panic cry and force blader's debuff called hard luck give

the target a total of -31% critical rate resistance, which basically means your critical rate is

increased by 31%, which makes it 100 if we ignore the base resistances for now.

If your character is going to be participating in PVP often then it might be worth going

over 70%.

Your base critical rate is 5%, and rings are the most basic source of that, but even with

the optimal rings you've got 37% rate only.

That means you're going to need at least 20-25% from other sources.

Some classes like Force Shielder and Force Blader have it easier, since they can achieve

60% critical rate without any serious effort, whereas a wizard for example will need critical

rate from almost every source possible.

I will talk about those sources soon.

As for the other stats, for any dungeon below tower of the dead b3f I think around 6000

attack rate and 800 accuracy is enough.

But as with everything else, it won't hurt to have more.

Attack, amp, critical damage and penetration should be as high as possible.

They basically define your damage, so you just can't have enough of them.

The same goes for defense, defense rate, evasion and damage reduction too.

Just try to get as much as possible of them without sacrificing too much of your damage.

Now health steal is a very important stat to talk about.

Once again, link in the video description of an explanation of how it works.

Initially, you're going to need like 5% or more while your damage is still low under

level 150, which you can get from a ring or gloves for example.

But once you learn the rune and max it, I don't think it will be necessary to get any

more health steal from other sources.

Health steal limit is something you should also get from rune, and wear a pair of vampiric

earrings to increase it further.

This is probably your best friend when it comes to surviving in dungeons or fields.

Many people seem to believe that defense or evasion from earrings is better, and in some

situations they may be right, but personally I think health steal is the best thing you

can get to stay alive.

Of course in wars and other pvp acitvities you should have a pair of earrings with defense

to replace them temporarily.

Now let's move onto the items.

First thing to consider, is that the critical rate you can get from rings is limited to

32%, or at level 200 it's 33%.

So if you've got a special ring like killian or tempus, there's space only for 1 more ring

with 15 or 17% critical rate.

The other 2 should give you damage instead.

Ideally, Tyrant's ring for one, and a critical ring for the other one.

There is an alternative, to use a ring of fighter or sage +10 because it also gives

10% critical damage and some attack, defense and attack rate.

However, I, as well as pretty much every top player I've seen on my server believe that

critical ring +2 or higher is better for damage later on.

Let's move onto the amulet.

Amulet is one of the main sources of maximum critical rate.

Luckily, the amulets from awakened hazardous valley nowadays are available to just about

everyone.

Now, in my opinion, 1 or 2 more percent of maximum critical rate is far more important

than more amp or critical damage from the epic options.

That is, of course if you can fill it with rate.

Amulet of pain +6 or +7 may serve as good alternatives until you can farm an orphidia's

amulet for yourself.

And for PVP, an amulet of resist is a very good idea to keep in your inventory.

Your weapons and helmet are the best sources of critical damage, and if you're a class

that needs it, critical rate too.

For example when I was a wizard I needed 7% rate from both weapons and helmet to achieve

high enough critical rate.

But a force blader might need to consider going full damage, and putting amp in the

3rd slot when making endgame items.

The craft option of your weapons and helmet should be critical damage in almost all cases.

However, a budget option that also works very well for a long time, is to get a helm with

8 or more % of critical rate as craft option, and fill 1 of the slots with rate, and the

other 2 with damage.

That temporarily lets you save some money on weapons without rate, or allows you to

reach very high rate, possibly over 70%.

The rest of the armorparts should have all skill amp up as craft option and at least

1 slot.

Whether the slot is empty or not, it gives your item more defense, so it's always useful.

Now let's see what to fill those slots with.

Suit and gloves are the only armorpieces that can give you maximum critical rate.

Now initially you might want to fill 1 slot of your gloves with health steal to help you

stay alive, but later on that will be kinda useless.

Most endgame builds have 3% max rate in both gloves and suit.

Initially, you can also fill the slots of your suit with HP, as it may help you survive.

Another thing to note here, is that many developing players tend to aim for gloves or suit with

amp craft, and 7% amp in slot instead of maximum critical rate.

But think about it, do you want to deal 100 more damage with your hit, or have 2 more

% chance to deal triple damage?

It's your call, but I don't think sacrificing critical rate is worth it for amp as long

as it can have max rate in 1 slot.

As for your shoes, before you can afford amp scrolls, HP and HP steal limit are both good

options to fill them with.

I personally prefer HP steal limit as I mentioned at the earrings.

I used to have +20 of that in the shoes of my wizard and that helped me survive in lots

of places.

But later on, since the only thing in the slots of boots that can increase your damage

is amp, you should fill all its slots with it.

The thing about amp, is that it suffers no penalty for being in multiple slots of the

same item.

For example if you try to fill 3 slots with critical damage or rate in a helmet, the last

slot gives only 1%.

Similarly for maximum critical rate, first slot gives 3% if extended, and the other 2

only 2% each, so it's not really worth doing that.

However, amp gives 8% in all 3 slots.

So basically, if any of your items serves its purpose and has an empty slot, fill them

with amp for your endgame set.

Bracelets.

Sage and fighter versions are very good for a start, because they give you a bunch of

skill amp, and at lower levels attack rate can be very useful to get rid of those annoying

blocks.

But as you progress your character, you're going to need more maximum critical rate,

and siena's bracelets are ideal for 2 more % of that.

So getting a pair of those is usually a good idea, even if their addditional benefits are

worse.

However, later on you're going to realize how awesome penetration is, and those bracelets

are a really good source of that.

So I think once you get your full set with 7 or more amp, and weapons over +15, you can

start focusing on penetration in your bracelets.

You may find that even with pretty bad options, the +50 penetration is often the best choice.

But still try not to buy the worst one out there just for that.

Let's talk about vehicles.

I see a lot of new players buying an astral bike after weeks of farming for it only for

the defense.

I think that's a terrible idea.

Chances are, you won't even notice +50 defense or so.

The astral board from the mini boss in port lux is good enough until you can afford a

blue bike with something that actually helps you.

Fortunately, nowadays blue bikes with attack in slots are actually quite cheap.

But vehicles can also grant you critical rate, so if you want that, you should think about

a K-red board first of all.

It's in the item shop for something like 7 vouchers.

I know that's actually really expensive, but it still might be cheaper than a bike with

5% rate.

Belts, arcanas, carnelians, talismans and epaulets don't really need any explanation

I suppose.

Just try to get the highest you can afford.

Belt might have a priority over the rest because it increases your damage the most probably.

Charm is the only item that can increase the duration of your battle modes.

That is something that can be extremely useful.

However, if you want to buy a charm just for that, you may want to save up some more money

and get one with a stat that's actually useful.

For example amber gives damage reduction, which I believe is the best option for regular

players.

The duration increase starts at +5 by the way, so I don't think you should get anything

below that.

Just a quick thought about effectors: for the offensive ones, your best bet is probably

penetration.

If you're a force blader, you should aim for an art of curse effector with 90% defense.

That is the most important thing about that effector.

Don't bother with the other 2 stats if you can't afford a perfect one, just make sure

the defense component is as high as possible.

Now for the pet, your trustworhy companion.

This is probably something random for new players, because you can't control the outcome

of pet training.

So basically, you should just keep trying until you get something that you consider

useful.

However, a hint: the best 2 things you can aim at in the normal slots, are maximum critical

rate, and critical rate.

Max rate is probably the best because you can get a total of 10% from 1 pet, which would

let you replace max rate in your suit or gloves with amp for example.

Costume is the last thing to consider I believe.

It's similar to pets, so critical rate related things might be the best.

6% rate can be achieved if you fill all 3 slots with it, which is quite a lot.

I suppose it's best if you get your max rate from pet and your rate from costume.

However, if you're a regular player, filling a costume's slots with attack or magic attack

will give you +60 of it, which is pretty good for a start if you can't afford anything better.

Attack scrolls for costumes are practically free after all.

Costumes can also have penetration it their slots, which is a good idea if you don't

need rate from them.

Putting the same thing in costume slots doesn't have diminishing returns like regular items

by the way.

The culture war between doctors and midwives, explained - Duration: 6:00.

It's one thing to lose our patients to doctors but to those charlatans?

It makes me sick.

That's an episode of the Mindy Project, in which a fight brews between Mindy Lahiri

- a doctor - and a midwifery practice.

Midwives!

Who the hell do you think you are?

Let's say I have a heart attack.

How would you handle that?

Would you, uh, rub eucalyptus leaves all around my chest, huh?

This is an exaggerated sitcom plot, but the idea points to a long-standing culture war

between doctors and midwives - that's rooted in race and class in America.

Alright, ladies. Let's go downstairs, let's set up appointments with some real doctors.

Midwifery is an incredibly common practice in a lot of countries.

In the UK, midwives deliver about half of all babies, including Kate Middleton's.

In Sweden, Denmark and France, midwives oversee around three quarters of births.

But here in the US, they participate in less than 10 percent of births.

In these countries - the ones that tend to rely on midwives more frequently - maternal

mortality rates are a fraction of America's.

In fact, maternal mortality has risen in the U.S. as it has declined elsewhere.

So if midwives are popular and effective in many other industrialized countries, why is

the U.S. medical system still wary of them?

The answer is complicated.

For most of human history, babies were delivered by midwives.

Midwifery can be found in the Old Testament.

They were respected for bringing their knowledge and training to childbirth.

In America, midwives were integral to both indigenous and immigrant groups.

And in the South, they known as "granny midwives."

Midwives have always existed.

It's just that we have changed over time.

That's Patricia Loftman, a midwife of 37 years and a member of the board of directors

for the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

When you look at midwifery, say in the time of enslavement,

the midwife was actually the

person who made certain that women were able to produce healthy babies.

Now, after slavery

ended she was no longer valuable because she was not making certain that there was a continued

slave labor.

I want you to meet Mrs. Mary Coley.

A midwife who lives in Albany, Georgia.

Generally in the South, most of these women were black women taking care of women, both

black and poor white, because during the days of segregation you could not access hospitals.

In the mid-to-late 1800s, the professionalization of medicine became a major trend, and male

doctors began taking control of childbirth away from female midwives.

It was determined that in order to get women into the hospital, you had to get rid of these

midwives who were taking care of all of these women in the home.

All of these women who had been attending births all of these years, they were blamed

for maternal deaths, infant deaths.

Two days ago a baby, delivered by a midwife, died, when it

ought to have lived.

My examination showed that its cord got infected.

And you all know what that means.

Something wasn't clean.

Joseph DeLee of Chicago, the most influential OB-GYN of his day, called midwives,

"relics of barbarism" and "a drag upon the science and the art of obstetrics."

In the South especially, much of the attack on midwifery was rooted in race.

One Alabama doctor dismissed black midwives as having

"fingers full of dirt and brains full of arrogance and superstition."

Some states outlawed home-birth midwives, while most others created new regulations

that made it harder to enter the profession.

By the 1950s, a vast majority of women gave birth in hospitals, attended by doctors.

But something changed in the 70s: Middle-class white women wanted more of a voice in their

maternity care and that led to a rise in midwifery.

Except this time, most midwives were white women.

The US currently has around 15,000 certified midwives.

It's a growing profession, but still overwhelmingly white.

Just about 5 percent of the nation's midwives are women of color.

In addition to being from the community and understanding not only linguistically and

culturally what women need,

midwives of color protect women in a system that is hostile

to them.

With black mothers three to four times more likely to die from causes related to pregnancy

or childbirth, there's evidence that empowering midwives might change outcomes for moms and

babies.

Researchers found that some states have clearly done more to integrate midwives than others.

And while there are many factors that can influence maternal and infant health,

many states with the least integration

also had some of the highest rates on key indicators including

premature births, neonatal mortality, and C-sections.

In recent years, groups like the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

have become much more welcoming to licensed midwives.

We're all in this together.

But that hasn't resolved the culture war between doctors and midwives just yet.

There is a role for a midwifery and physician collaborative relationship.

We're not enemies.

We are colleagues who need each other.

computer I'm very excited about the new computer and for those who you don't

know the story about the computer I purchased a new iMac in the fall so it

was in late October I got it up and running in November the I had troubles

with the computer ever since I first got it it crashed three times and finally

the last time it crashed it had to go back into the store cuz they said they

just couldn't help me over the over the phone in terms of customer support

support and finally the last time it went in I said to Apple I said I don't

want it back I said I want you to take it back give me a refund for me for it

and I will upgrade to an iMac Pro which the iMac Pro is just came out in

December and if you look got them they're a really really

high-end computer so so that's what I'm live-streaming to you tonight I was

trying to get that transferred over with the backup and that sort of thing and I

got it up and I got it working in time to do the livestream so I'm a half an

hour late so you're not late Sam it was actually me tonight so crazy and lazy

when turning left should you be scanning for stop signs

across the way to see if you should yield to through traffic you should

definitely be scanning the cross traffic crazy to be not so much looking for

through traffic but what you should be looking for is looking for pedestrians

who might be crossing the street on the cross traffic that's what you need to be

doing so oh yeah ah yes match rev now you're gonna hear my little pet peeve

about match revving okay there are some channels here that will tell you that

match revving is something that's going to improve your driving that's baloney

absolutely baloney rev-matching has absolutely no place in everyday driving

of a manual transmission okay the purpose of rev matching it is a

racing technique and the purpose of Reb matching of using your heel toe on the

brake and throttle at the same time is to throttle up shift down and maintain

the same speed and the reason for that is when you go into a corner in a

rear-wheel drive vehicle when you're racing at high speeds when you brake you

lift the back end of the vehicle up so what race drivers are doing is when they

Rev match they're throttling up they're maintaining the same speed in a lower

gear and then they're maintaining the equilibrium in the vehicle so the back

end doesn't lift up because if the back end lifts up at a high speed in a corner

what's gonna happen is you're gonna get what's called over steering where the

back end of the vehicle kicks out and that's what racecar drivers are

preventing when they Rev match in everyday driving just slow the vehicle

down and then just shift down it has absolutely no place in everyday driving

and these race car drivers who are rev-matching in a manual transmission on

a track have spent thousands and thousands and thousands of hour

rev-matching I have been double-clutching for ever since I was in

my early 20s actually probably before that when I was on the farm

double-clutching nan synchromesh transmissions and even I don't get it

right in my car because my little Honda there when you're going up a hill you've

got to come down and you've got a double clutch to get a nice smooth shift on a

hill to get it going so rev-matching if you're just driving

everyday manual transmission you don't need to rev match okay alright so an art

practising for the DMV in Lincoln Nebraska class Oh license

how should I adjust my speed to make a left turn or right turn at a signal or a

stop sign so anarta if you're not coming to a stop

on a right turn you have to get down to sort of eight to ten miles an hour and

on a left turn it's going to vary depending on how big the intersection is

on a left turn you're going to be anywhere from sort of 12 to 25 miles an

hour on a left turn and again on a right turn you're gonna be sort of 10 to 12

miles an hour and you want to get to that speed before you start making the

turn that's going to really help you out in terms of your turns get your speed

first and then work the steering wheel in higher vehicles

commercial vehicles when you're shifting a non synchronous transmission those

types of things we always tell students get into the gear that you're going to

go around the corner in before you start going around the corner in that way it's

going to allow you to have more control when you're going around the corner

alright this video on right-of-way is recommended learning to drive and

determine the right-of-way give right away to others there you go so that's

all good yes and how to learn to drive there are a couple of exercises in that

video that are really good and I come back to again I say this again and again

and again to students if you're asking me how much you have to turn the

steering wheel or when you should start turning a steering wheel on a corner you

really should go back to the parking lot and do the exercises in that video and

master the primary controls of the vehicle the steering wheels the brake

and the throttle once you master those three controls and you can back up

around corners you can back up in a straight line for a

long distance you can background corners and those types of things then carry on

and start moving out onto the road but you really got to master the

fundamentals of driving before you start going out onto the roadway okay Liam

what is your preference for a hand over hand versus hand to hand steering the

taught us hand to hand because of airbags and driver's ed but I really

dislike it okay Liam yeah I don't like hand to hand either there just isn't

enough control and you can't move the steering wheel fast enough I am really a

hand-over-hand person and I did they give you a reason

Liam about why hand-to-hand they felt that that had something to do with

airbags the only thing that I have heard about airbags is that we've moved our

hand position to eight and two which is in my mind uncomfortable and does not

allow you to have good control over the vehicle and eight and two is because of

the airbags come deploying out and what happens is you get forearm injuries you

get broken forearms and those types of things so that's the only other reason

so so yeah hand to hand unless the driving Authority where you're gonna

take your test requires you to do hand at hand for the purposes of the test I

would just do hand hand over hand okay otherwise you know just move on with it

all right okay so we got all that an artist

question we got that Sam is here so Sam here's a question for you Sam if you're

still there did you notice a big downturn in the number of students and

driving tests that you were doing at the end of April like sort of through the

the last three weeks of April and into the first week of May and now it's

starting to pick up again once we're getting into the end

early June because I'm just trying to gauge the viewership on my channel

versus what's really happening sort of in driver education and the number of

students and whatnot who are actually getting a license so have you noticed a

downturn in April there in terms of driver's tests and whatnot there we got

okay random random guy does it hurt when you get hit by near near what it got cut

off there oh okay if you get hit by an airbag it airbags

when they first appeared on high in cars and when they first came out in the late

1990s there were quite a number of people who in fact were being injured by

airbags because what happened was is they they didn't have the timing of the

airbags quite right what was happening was is that the collision was occurring

the person was coming forward and as the person was coming forward the airbag was

still deploying and it was still inflating so what happened was the the

person's body was coming forward like this even if they were restrained by a

seatbelt their head and whatnot was coming forward the airbag was coming out

and you were getting a collision and oftentimes for many people with airbags

in the early adoption of airbags on cars people would get broken under their eyes

their skull would their I this part of their face would be broken their nose

would be broken and they would sustained serious injury to their face now airbags

are much better because now what's happened is they've got the timing right

on the airbags so when the person is coming forward the airbag has already

fully deployed and when the person's face hits the airbag the airbag is

beginning to deflate so airbags are much much better now than what they were when

they first came out in the late 1990s uh

yeah Sam I had a way it was odd because I was doing Veda in April doing a video

every day in April and I was thinking that the views on my channel we're gonna

go up when in fact my channel just tanked in April so it was pretty pretty

disappointing doing all of those videos on Veda and then just see the tip

channel tanked so yeah that's what happened okay food what is the perfect

time to warm up a normal car and start driving

Fuad you need 15 seconds you need the oil pressure to come up and as soon as

the oil pressure comes up you can start driving now of course the vehicle is the

engine is still cold it's not warmed up so only drive it moderately for about 15

or 20 minutes until the all the operating temperature comes up and then

you can start really whaling on it after a while and racecar drivers and other

car enthusiasts will tell you that as well don't start gassing on it until it

actually warms up but you but you only need the oil pressure to come up and

then you can start driving it moderately if it's a fuel-injected vehicle okay

Liam they teach three and nine and said with hand over hand your arms are

crossing over the steering wheel more so there's a higher likelihood for injury

okay that Liam that makes sense that definitely makes sense because that's

one of the things that we teach in martial arts if somebody's got their

arms crossed like this we grab this arm here and put it over but you know

there's there's a possibility for injury but I think I think it's I think it's

low I don't I'm not sure I completely buy into that Sam what do you think

about that in terms of hand over hand and airbags and that idea now that we

should use hand to hand or what did you call it milking you called it milking

the cow for hand to hand there okay Jonathan hi I'm drivers test next month

what do you recommend before going okay so Jonathan if you haven't done the

basic maneuvers already learning the primary controls and being very

comfortable with the primary controls look at that video on learning to drive

and do those video those exercises in that video as well for a driving test

there's always four components doesn't matter where you're taking your road

test in the world or what class of licence it is speed management space

management observation communication those are the four fundamentals of any

road test so speed management posted speed limit

or the flow of traffic whichever is less that's how fast you drive the vehicle

space management don't get near any fixed objects don't get near other road

users stop the correct stopping positions at stop sign

intersections before the crosswalk before the stop line before where the

two roads meet if there isn't a crosswalk line or a stop line stop in

traffic so that you can see the tires in front of you on the vehicle in front of

you make them clear contact with the pavement and two to three second

following distance for space management ok so then you've got observation you

have to observe so you have to have a good scanning pattern in place you're

looking far down the road you're checking your mirrors your center mirror

far down the road wing mirrors far down the road check your your instrument

panel and then far down the road and when you're doing reverse maneuvers

you're gonna do a 360 degree scan before you move back and then when you're

backing up every vehicle length you're gonna stop the vehicle and look forward

and make sure you're straight in those types of things and then finally every

time you turn the vehicle you're going to to shoulder checks one approximately

just before you start the manoeuvre and then a half a block from the turn you're

gonna do another one and then immediately before you start moving so

you're going to do two shoulder checks for every time you move the vehicle

laterally so those are the four components of any road test okay what

else so that's basically it so then there's another video here on a mock

road test and Koryo get that up for you have a look at that as well Jonathan

that'll give you a good overview of what you need to do ok Silas why should you

why should you warm a car up and how can you tell when it's warm

ok so Silas you don't need to warm the car up you don't need to let it sit

there an eyelid you only need to let it run for about 15 seconds and then you

can drive off you can tell when it's warm when the when the engine

temperature gauge gets up to operating temperature and you'll get used to the

car and where the engine temperature is sitting and if that engine temperature

goes too high you need to shut the vehicle off because you're going to blow

off the engine because it's too hot and it won't run properly ok now even though

that engine temperature gauge if you feel like you're going to start racing

and gassing on it and doing all kinds of goofy things even though the engine

temperature gauge is up to temperature the drivetrain the transmission and the

differential and all those types of things aren't up to temperature so you

got to drive it probably for about a half an

forty minutes before the entire engine drivetrain and everything is warmed up

to operating temperature if you're gonna start racing and doing goofy things with

it so know that that you can do a fair bit of damage if the vehicle and the

drivetrain not just the engine but the drivetrain as well is not warm okay we

we can talk more about that as well just answer some of these other questions

here all right um I'm not sure why that

happens you would think they would be great views with the beta series yeah

the Veda series was kind of a failed exercise Sam it didn't really go over

too well Don and actually I had a I had a consult with Tim Schmoyer which some

of you may know he has a YouTube channel and he does how to do YouTube and he's

been doing it for a long time I really like Tim stuff and I had a

consult with Tim and Tim gave me some really good feedback and we both agreed

that the beta series was not one of my better series so so we're gonna try so

you're gonna see some new stuff coming up here and actually I would also like

to hear people's opinion about the new channel art I got new channel art done

on the YouTube channel if you're watching it on the replay as well be

JFS a two things opinions are on automatic truck transmissions not fond

of them myself slow shifting and our block heaters really not useful outside

of nineveh jf sa yes I agree with you on automatic transmissions I am NOT a fan

of them there's no way that automatic transmissions are going to be able to do

the work of manual transmissions in terms of fuel economy and they're

certainly not going to be able to pull super bees through the mountains for

some time coming you know anything under 80,000 pounds I think automatic

transmissions on the flat are gonna do just fine and that is reflected in most

of the fleets in the United States now being automatic transmissions here in

Canada and on the west coast of the United States I think there's still

mostly 18-speed transmissions and yes block heaters are a must on diesel

trucks still most places where it gets cold if it

gets down to minus ten you need a block heater on a diesel truck or it's still

just not going to start all right Sam yes I call milking the cow I do hand

over hand all the time and don't think about the airbag situation at all there

you go and I and I I agree too Sam I don't think about the airbag situation

either I do hand over hand Ryan hi Ryan how are you just listening while finding

okay random guy was told my driving structure the point of no return what

does that mean random guy was he talking about yellow lights like yellow traffic

lights because what we talked about in terms of the point of no return on

yellow traffic lights is that you're just you're so close to the intersection

within one vehicle length of the intersection if you're that close to the

light and the light goes yellow you're not going to stop it's point of no

return you can't you can't get back how to pass

parallel parking for the driver's test Kel's Kel's what you need to do start

with the learn to drive video which I think Cory has already put up here and

get control of the primary controls as well go up and get some of those 1 meter

tall 36 inch tall pylons the delineators from your local rental shop you can rent

4 of them there less than $10 for a day and go down to a parking lot at a church

or grocery store parking lot or a movie parking lot or someplace like that and

just set the cones up and drive around them and you'll be able to work with

your primary controls yes Sam I agree tim is really great and

you know the consult session that i had with him for the hour he just gave me

some really awesome feedback on my channel and i really feel like you know

i think it was a good thing that the computer kind of went down for the last

couple 2-3 weeks and i haven't been making videos because i think its kind

of allowed me to really reflect on where I want the channel to go for forward

from here and Tim gave me some really great stuff so I'm really interested in

hearing what people have to say about because I'm getting a new intro done for

my video I'm gonna change the beginning of my

videos and I and I was kind of working on that with the Veda series and also

like I said I've done the the I've done some new channel art and I just you know

I'm really looking forward to people's feedback and the feedback I did put up a

pole for the new channel art and people gave me good feedback about that I think

about 70% of people smart drivers really said that they really liked it so you

know if you're watching on the replay and you like the new Chandler give it a

thumbs up and that'd be really great okay Silas I don't know this is related

to the video but how do you improve sense of direction I feel scared because

I may get lost and do not know how to get back

alright so Silas definitely look on the on the video they're on route planning

and navigation and one of the other things Silas if you're driving an older

vehicle and you don't have one that tells you northwest-southeast

then go out and get one of those compasses that you can put on the dash

which will give you directions north east south and west and that way as well

I don't know where you are in the world Silas but a couple of things one of the

things I live in Vernon British Columbia and we have mountains on the east and on

the west side of town so if we're going north or south you have you know you

have a mountain range on the north are on the west and on the east and when I

drove in Melbourne Australia I lived there for five years and if you were

driving now let me see your East West and you knew where North and South was

because often times you could see the cityscape of Melbourne Australia and you

could see the bay and you knew where the bay was because you knew we're no south

east and west were and so if you get a direction of where north south east and

west are it's going to give you a better sense of direction as well that video

navigation of route planning will show you how to go through Google Maps it'll

show you how to use Google Maps it'll also show you how to use your phone and

how to use the the map app on your phone and as well I'll show you how to use a

GPS unit and whatnot so all of that will help you out in terms of sense of

direction navigation okay so Liban I'm taking the exam in a

new area how do you avoid missing turns when the instructor says to do so I'm

trying to avoid going too fast or too slow yes living

you really want to try to get up to the posted speed limit as quickly as

possible for the purposes of a road test as I said the speed limit for the

purposes of road test is either the posted speed limit or the flow of

traffic whichever is last and you want to get up to speed as quickly as

possible the driving examiners are good at giving you directions and giving you

directions early they're gonna say you know at the controlled intersection turn

left and it's going to be three or four blocks before the controlled

intersection and when they say controlled intersection is going to be a

yield sign a stop sign or a set of traffic lights that's what they mean by

a controlled intersection when they say uncontrolled intersection most of the

time that's you're on a major road and they want you to turn onto a minor road

so they want you to turn at the next road so if they say turn left at the

next control uncontrolled intersection that means the next street they want you

to turn left and most driving instruct examiner's are really good because they

do it all the time they know you're nervous they know that you're under

scrutiny and that you're prone to making errors because you're you're you know

you're being tested so they're good at giving you lots of advance notice in

terms of where you need to turn in those types of things Fouad there's a brand of

airbags you can kill the driver even at small crashes so I think that is better

to deactivate the airbag yeah I would definitely want to find out about that

that airbag but most airbags now are safe they've improved them a lot and

they've done a lot of crash testing on airbags to make the to provide maximum

safety to vehicle occupants and pickup truck airbags on the passenger side can

be turned off if you have people who are smaller I think it's smaller than 80

pounds in the front seat as well there's a sensor in the seat to indicate that if

there isn't a passenger in there or the passengers to light the airbag won't

activate so the technology is getting much much better in terms of airbags and

those types of things okay Sarah my driving instructor where'd you go my

driving instructor told me you are not checking your blind spots correctly can

you please tell me when should I check them while driving okay

Sarab okay are you Sarab are you talking about shoulder checking is he or she

saying that you're not shoulder checking correctly for the purposes of your blind

of your checking your blind spots all right liban oh you are most welcome

living and thank you for the compliment and thank you for the compliment for

Cory - Cory does some great work on the channel here and it really makes it all

of this possible for me to do the work that I can do and it's I tell you the

the channel has really got a great boost when Cory's come on board and done the

work he has that's for sure okay mystery can a person with cerebral palsy Drive

and if so how are they graded someone asked me and this is why I'm asking you

mr. e so what you need to do mr. e is I don't know where you live and Ryan's

here and I know Ryan is driving with hand controls and mr. e what you would

need to do is there is an organization and if you can't I think if you're in

the States if you contact the DoD the Department of

Transportation they will give you the name of the organization so you need to

contact them and then they will do an evaluation and oftentimes they want you

to go to your medical doctor and get a certificate of you know like you get a

medical done so that you bring that certificate to the to the the center

that's going to do the testing for people with disabilities and essentially

what they'll do is sometimes they'll have the driving instructor sometimes it

might be just an occupational therapist the driving instructor in the

occupational therapists at least when I used to do driver rehabilitation it was

myself and a occupational therapist and we would take you out in the vehicle and

we would do a driving assessment to see if there if you were a candidate to be

retrained or to be trained to get your license so there you go mr. e so you're

in Chicago Illinois I can look that up for you mr. e send me an email Rick at

smart drive test comm and I'll look into that for you in terms of Chicago I think

I could find that information for you and then you would just simply go for an

evaluation and then you would move forward from there okay all phase how

are you the seat great evening Dorcas just wanted to come

in to you for your help thank you very much that's great didn't darkus just

remind me you did just get your license right I'm we're correct on that I think

I remember there's been it's been really great I mean there have been many many

smart drivers who have been passing their their tests in the last month or

so I mean it has just been really great to hear people say that they passed the

road test and I had a part in that it's just been really great in I mean this

morning somebody from Dubai passed the road test I had another smart driver

from Belgium asking me questions this morning so it's just been it's been

really great all the people in the world ok clockwork I'm glad to watch again I

was wondering if I'm driving with my parents and the tags are expired and I

get pulled over when I get a ticket or like clockwork I'm not the the driver is

going to get the tickets because you should have been dry you should have

done a pre-trip inspection and knowing that everything was the the decals were

valid on the vehicle so go get those done and don't drive around without with

expired decals okay so Sarah so you need some help with shoulder checking so

Sarah you need to shoulder check two times for every time you move the

vehicle laterally so when you're turning for example you need to shoulder check

approximately half a block before the turn and then you stop and you need to

shoulder check again if you stop there for some time

at the intersection and you're going to turn then you need to shoulder check

again immediately before you turn now if you're going to lane change or move the

vehicle laterally sit mirror signal shoulder check so you got to turn your

signal on have a lock shoulder check at the same time and check your mirror to

make sure that there's a space there and you can fit into the gap and then three

flashes on the signal minimum and then once you start moving over immediately

shoulder check again so that's when you shoulder check for the purposes of

driving and checking your blind spots while you're driving so that's what you

need to do okay all right Silas my mom tells me ahead of time for example to

make a right turn at the next light and change lanes but I get confused and can

remember any tips I can keep messing up Silas if you're not hearing the

directions that your mom is giving you while you're driving what is it that

you're thinking about or concentrating on that is causing you to tune your mom

out or you're not processing that information because what it would seem

to me as a driving instructor is that there's a lot going on and it's not that

you didn't hear your mom it's the fact that you've got so much going on in

terms of what you're concentrating on and you're driving and you're focused on

that that you're not listening because those driving instructors and Sam will

probably say the same thing as what I'm about to say is that I know for a fact

that when a when I'm in the car with a student and he or she is doing a

left-hand turn I just stopped talking because I know for a fact that the

student isn't listening to what I'm saying and it's interesting the truck

there's a truck video that I just put up about three weeks ago about right turns

in a truck and I hadn't been in the truck for a couple of week couple of

months and I was concentrating and trying to shift the truck and drive the

track and so you see me there's some big pauses in that video because I'm trying

to I'm trying to concentrate what on what I'm doing and I'm trying to talk to

the camera at the same time so if you've got a lot going on and you're

concentrating and your mom is trying to give you directions it's not that you're

not hearing or it's just that you've got a lot of other stuff go on and what I

might suggest Silas is that you have a look at that video learning how to drive

and then go back to the parking lot and revisit those fundamentals again because

again I come back to that same point again and again and again slow speed

maneuvers working in the parking lot with the pylons and doing those

exercises in the parking lot will improve your overall driving so do not

negate that go back to that and revisit that and that will help you with that

again all right Hall phase do you get health benefits

when you or a Cal driver or a bus driver most places Hall phase you do get

benefits when you're a transit driver because you're part of the Union

depending on which coach company or bus company that you're working for you will

get better fits with them okay two weeks tomorrow

there we go door cuz that's really awesome then you passed a road test

that's really lucky really great Hall phase are you to become how like the

hall phase what's a cal driver Cal Cal Cal sorry

CDL driver I mean you can become you can become a CDL driver you're gonna be just

fine

liam is it okay to cross a double yellow line to pass a bicycle

probably not Liam you would probably want to wait until the line gets to be

it would really depend on where you are whether you're gonna cross that double

line or not but there's a video here as well how to change lanes look at that

video Cory be able to find that for you and it'll tell you how to move around

somebody that's smaller like a cyclist or those types of things but essentially

you know it's like changing a lane you got a signal mirror signal shoulder

check shoulder check three flashes on the signal look again move out around

and then signal back and come in right okay Hall phase hello hello hello we got

everybody here okay Oh CDL driver there we go okay yes so

easy to become a CDL drivers I think in most places you have to be a minimum age

I know here in British Columbia you have to be nineteen years old to get a class

one CDL license which is tractor-trailer and then it's just a matter of going

through truck driving school and getting your license and so I mean as long as

you have you know you're you don't have too many speeding tickets because really

the goal of going to truck driving school or bus driving school is to get a

job excuse me at the end of that right so you need to have a fairly clean

criminal record if you are driving in the States or working in the States as a

CDL driver you need to be drug-free because you're going to be drug tested

when you go into the states it got distracted there sorry I shouldn't be

reading the comments what I'm talking so that's what you need to do and as long

as your your abstract you're driving abstract because to go to to get a job

as a CDL driver they're gonna ask you for your drivers abstract we all have

the drivers tract that the licensing authority keeps

and it shows all our speeding tickets and and tickets and crashes that we've

had or any other traffic Highway Traffic Act infractions that we've had so keep

that clean if you're gonna go on to become a CDL driver okay and then it's

just a matter of going to driving school and then you know getting a job and in

those tapes things oh there we go i Sam says I agree with you sometimes

I'm having a conversation with a student and all of a sudden the student stops

talking because of something going on and I'll remain quiet too so they can

concentrate yes and on what they're doing yes so Sam agrees with me that

sometimes the traffic situation demands the drivers entire attention and if the

driving instructor or the mentor is talking to that student and the student

doesn't hear them the reason is is because the student is concentrating on

the traffic situation because the the overarching competency for you to pass a

road test is to demonstrate to the examiner that you have due care and

control of the vehicle in a fluid driving situation in other words that

driving situation is changing all the time and driving examiner's want to know

that you can change your driving habits to remain safe in changing situations of

driving this is why driving is so complex and I come back to this again

the six factors of the driving task right the driver the vehicle traffic the

road light and whether those are the six combinations of are the six criteria of

driving that are always changing and make it difficult and they can come

together in one situation maybe completely innocuous harmless or another

situation can be really dangerous so know that can we go on a raid after the

stream absolutely Hall phase it may be a little bit tough for us to get together

but that sounds like fun sounds like fun okay guau Makia I didn't

say that right I do apologize how do I judge the front and back of my car when

parking in a tight spot okay the best way to do that and I've had this

question a little bit over the last few weeks how

do you judge in a tight space one of the best ways to learn where your vehicle is

in space and place if you were in the least bit doubt get out of your vehicle

and actually have a look and I don't counsel you to do that on a road test do

not actually don't do that on a road test but when you're learning how to

drive and you're still in the novice phase of driving get out of the vehicle

and have a look and this is especially important if you start moving up to

bigger vehicles if you start moving up to pickup trucks and you start moving up

and towing trailers and boats and recreational trailers and you start

moving up to buses and those whatnot if you were in the least bit of doubt when

you're parking or backing up that vehicle or in a space that's really

tight get out and look and put that skill in place because you look like a

complete amateur if you just keep going and you back into something but if you

actually get out and look then you don't look like an amateur you only look like

an amateur when you hit something so get out and look don't be embarrassed to do

that because it's gonna be much more embarrassing if you do hit something so

that's how you're gonna learn space in place and the other video that I would

counsel you to have a look at is have a look at the blind spots around your

vehicle video and that will show you how big those blind areas around your

vehicle from when you're sitting in the driver's seat okay

ela failed my first test on Friday sorry about that

that's unsuccessful on your attempt there between them apparently had to

cancel my signal light that turn it on and get not keep it on thoughts okay

so then right again at about 10 meters between them apparently I had to cancel

my signal light then turn it back on again Eli I'm I can't I can't comment

specifically because I don't know the exact situation I and you know I wasn't

there in the car that sounds it sounds a bit dubious because if it's a short

distance between one right hand to the next right hand turn I would have just

counseled you to leave your light on but your your signal light on now what I

would cancel you for the next time Eli is higher driving school and do a

practice driving test as Sam says Sam is driving lessons with Big Mac Sam this

Sam yo yo he works as a driving instructor for rukhi auto driving school

there in the Bronx in they do practice driving tests for about twenty dollars

it's really inexpensive in most US states so if you can get a practice

driving test do that and then you'll know for sure whether you're ready or

not and you'll know which skills and abilities that you have to improve in

order to be successful on a road test and as well it's just great twenty

dollars spent even it's fifty dollars it's still a bargain because you know

you're gonna pass your road test for sure okay let's see just drive a crappy

car so you don't have to worry about hitting the curb yeah unfortunately you

can't hit the curb on a road test you can touch the curb but don't don't hit

the curb there we go okay Hall face can you show us how to invade paying tolls

I'll tell you a funny story about that Hall face some years ago when I drove

truck we used to run the East Coast salon and of course for those of you who

are on the east coast of the US around New York yeah 20 bucks come on down

there Sam so the tolls of course is there's a toll on the Massachusetts

Turnpike there's tolls on New Jersey Turnpike in you know

across the George W Washington Bridge the Verrazano in onto Staten Island and

all those types of things and of course one of the dispatchers was going on

about how this truck driver named whiskers of course whiskers was a

harley-davidson motorcycle rider and he had big white beard and he said whiskers

never pays tolls blah blah blah right so I'm trying to figure out how to get

around the tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike I'm like how the heck do you

get from Buffalo to Boston without paying a toll and of course I'm trying

to figure this out because we used to avoid the hope that the toll on i-90 by

going down across our highway State Road 17 in New York State when we went from

Buffalo to New York City well we used to avoid the toll and I'd do everything I

could to avoid tolls and then finally about three or four weeks later I ran

into whiskers and I said whiskers how do you avoid the toll in the Massachusetts

Turnpike he starts laughing he looks at me he goes I don't avoid the towline

just go down the Turnpike so what people are telling you about voiding tolls

isn't necessarily true sometimes sometimes it's just cheaper to pay the

toll there you go that's my tip Matt's my my two cents on avoiding tolls in the

US okay Jim or do you need to use signal lights when doing three-point turn now

jammer I don't some places will not get you to do our you don't have to use turn

signals for doing three-point turns however the three point two turn video

that I do here I do get you two signal and again if you do signal when you're

doing your three-point turns it demonstrates to the examiner that you

have do care and control of the vehicle and that you can communicate to other

traffic when you're doing maneuvers on the roadway so I would encourage you to

use your signals while you're practicing and learning how to do your three-point

turns okay oh it's unfortunate okay so Sam the student was unsuccessful on the

practice driving test or the student was unsuccessful on the d-o-t test okay Liam

I'm from New York and I see the license plate covers everywhere

there you go or they just accidentally spill plain on their tags there you go

okay they have clear ones that the store plate when okay clockwork I mean what

would you recommend doing if you run it a gas and you were stuck in traffic

clockwork I would really recommend that you not run out of fuel if your fuel

tank gets down to a quarter of a tank put fuel and it's just so much easier

than running out of fuel if you do run out of fuel because I know that it is

inevitable and that at some point you may run out of fuel you need to get the

vehicle off the road as quickly as possible so if you are running down on

the e on your fuel tank then make sure you drive in the outside lane so you can

get the vehicle off the roadway okay so Sam so the student got fifty five on the

practice driving test and I'm sure that student felt a lot better about spending

the 20 bucks and doing a practice driving test and finding out that he or

she was not ready to take the d-o-t test and then went back and did a bit more

work and was successful on their d-o-t test so yeah I really really encourage

you and I used to call it a mock Road test it's actually a practice driving

test so do a practice driving test before you go in and take your test if

you're not taking driving lessons if you're taking driving lessons you're

gonna be okay because your driving instructor is going to tell you whether

you're ready or not and those types of things okay Hall

phase four automatic tolls you can actually avoid paying tolls because

electronic rolling only reads plates unlike the normal total Tollbooth there

you go well you guys will have it can have a

discussion about that no I'm not gonna intervene because some might you know

there's some ethics going on there ela do you need to turn your signal off and

on again when turning right twice at ten meters between and this was one of his

complaints ela I can't like I said I can't comment on that

I don't know and would counsel you to do Eli is to go and

hire driving school and do a practice driving test and that and that driving

instructor will be able to give you that specific information in and around where

you are taking your tests at the driving Authority because I just can't comment

on that specific information that's just too specific for what I'm doing okay

so I I think we're up to 45 minutes here I think we're gonna if anybody has any

other questions or whatnot I think we're gonna leave it there for

tonight and because it's Memorial Day weekend in the States and we'd certainly

like to honor all the veterans in the United States so and yeah

was driving with one hand doing rolling stops or stopping after the stop lane he

forgot to signal and making a right turn etc etc so so the student had his

license from Puerto Rico and didn't realize that driving for the purposes of

a road test is a very different exercise than driving normally like we do every

every day so there we go so yes the student had to learn that there was a

different set of criteria for the purposes of passing a road test okay

weekend in the United States when there is a statutory holiday or a long weekend

you need to be more perfect no hollowface you don't need to be more

perfect you need a very different set of driving skills for the purposes of

passing a road test and Sam and I'll both tell you because I'll tell you Sam

and I drive differently wouldn't we actually drive as opposed to preparing

and helping students get ready to pass a road test okay do we wave to oncoming

traffic to pass before you start absolutely not Nick mice on for the

purposes of a road test do not wave to other traffic or wave other traffic on

okay just stop put the vehicle into reverse that way you've got your signal

on and you've got to reverse lights on in the traffic behind you knows what

you're doing and if they're there they're they're gonna go around you and

yes Hall phase we're gonna go up and do a rade okay so that's what you need to

do and as well know macmeister when they get you to a parallel park for the

purposes of a road test they're not gonna do it on a busy street and many

different licensing authorities are actually going to get you to do it in a

closed circuit area in other words you're gonna do it sorry you're gonna do

it in a parking lot or something like that alright so thanks everybody if you
