today we're gonna talk about how to install an extruder an extruder a fan
and a bed so I need to go over a couple of things so first of all we have our
fan port which is D9 right here then we have our second extruder which is D7 our
first extruder which is D10 and then our bed which is D8 over here we have
our thermistors these are used to tell temperature so the first one over here
is extruder one then we have our bed and then we have our second extruder so to
connect it what we have to do is first we'll start with a fan so we're going to
use the notch connector on the fan and connect it to our fan port right here
next we're gonna connect one of the extruders so what we're going to do is
we're going to connect to our port right here and we're going to screw that down
then we'll do the other side now doesn't matter for plus and minus on these
so there is the other one now we're going to connect the actual extruder to
the bed now we're going to connect the next extruder and this is gonna be our
extruder for the first extruder
and we're gonna connect the thermistor connector for that now polarity doesn't
matter on this for plus or minus as well so that's connected now we're gonna do
the bed so first I'm going to connect the actual thermistor which is the white
port in the center and finally the two connectors for the bed keep in mind that
polarity is well here for voltage is not a factor
and in a moment I'll show you how to connect the USB port to the computer
okay to connect the USB you're going to connect the big side to the MKS Gen L
board and the small side of the computer and you're gonna hear a beep now keep in
mind once it's energized you don't want to touch this area in a moment I'll show
you how to load the Marlin firmware okay we're gonna open up a marlin folder for
bug-fix 1.1.9 we're gonna open up the Marlin sub folder now we're gonna
search on pins for the MKS Gen L and we're gonna open that up and as you can
see inside here we have the definition for the board but down below I want to
show you something this is, "MOSFET_D_PIN 7", that's the extra extruder that
was added for digital pin 7 and then down below we have what's called the
include and it says, "pins_RAMPS.h", this is the definition of
all the pins on your board not just these so we also have this which is chip
select this is used for a custom stepper like the TMC 2130 which I'll cover in
future tutorials but now I want to open up, "boards.h" and show you what that
looks like so you're gonna search on boards and open that up and then down
below what you see right here this is a definition or name of the actual board
that we're going to use in the Marlin folder for motherboards and that's the
definition of the board that we just looked at for pins for MKS Gen L so I'm
going to close out of here and I'm going to find the Marlin solution file or dot
Ino and open that up okay now that we're in
the Marlin solution file or the IDE we're gonna do a search on, "motherboard"
and what we have here is the default name which is, "BOARD_RAMPS_14_EFB" or extruder fan and bed
we're gonna change that to the name that we copied out of the boards file and now
it's, "BOARD_MKS_GEN_L", now we have to also add an
additional extruder to our definition so we're going to say there's two extruders
instead of one and then we have to change down below our thermistor type
now what we have here are defined thermistor types now the default one is
what most of you will use if you have a custom one then you can pick another
number but down below here we have our first thermistor which is already
defined but now we got to do the second one and we're gonna call that one as
well and then we also have to define our bed so let's see if we can find that
real quick look here it is so we're gonna call that default one as well and
then there's thermal protection that are on by default and remember to always
watch your printer when it's active or energized with power so the next thing
we want to do is we want to select the board port number and in this case I
believe it's on port three so we're good there and then we want to select the
actual board type which in this case will be the Arduino mega 2560 and so now
we're going to compile and upload and in a moment I'll show you in Pronterface
how we tested
okay before we can test it we have to energize the actual power for the 12
volts so I'm going to connect the power I've connected the connectors over here
already so keep in mind that safety is paramount when we're doing this okay so
as you can see now it's energized so you should not touch this area just like the
USB and at the moment I'll show you how to test it okay we're going to open up
Pronterface executable we're gonna connect to the device as you can see we only
have one extruder to choose from here so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go
over to settings options and I'm going to search on extruders I don't change
that from 1 to 2 and then okay I'm gonna close Pronterface application and now I'm
gonna reopen it now as you can tell after we connect we now have a tool
count of either 0 or 1 I'm going to show you how to turn on the second extruder I
have the temperature set here 75 degrees Celsius so I'm gonna change that
60 so it's a little bit less dangerous and always keep an eye on your printer
when it's active with extruders or the heat bed so I'm gonna click set and as
you can tell that you're starting to rise over here for the second extruder
so now I'm gonna turn on the bed the bed is active as well so the next thing that
I want to do is I want to turn on the fan so you can see how that works so I'm
gonna type, "m106 p0" which is for the first fan and then,
"s200", is the speed so I'm gonna press send and I'll show you what happens on the
MKS configuration
and now that you see the fan is running I'm gonna turn the fan off in this case
I'm gonna take the speed to zero and press Enter I'll show you in a moment
what it looks like
