Destination 2018: Monschau - Duration: 9:20.

The small town of Monschau, hidden away in a narrow valley,

benefitted greatly from the wars that plagued Germany in the 17th century.

Today, it benefits greatly from the tourist industry.

The town's history can be traced back to the 12th century,

when the Dukes of Limburg built a castle.

It's first mentioned in 1198 as Mons Ioci,

a name that went through several revisions before finally being germanized in 1918

due to anti-French sentiment after the First World War.

In 1435 the castle fell to the Margrave of Jülich.

About a century later, imperial troops almost destroyed the castle and the town

at the end of the Guelders Wars,

a complicated series of conflicts that started with an unpaid debt

and ended with the Holy Roman Empire taking control of the Low Countries.

But the town's history may go back even further than the castle.

On the opposite hill is a fortification known as the Haller.

It doesn't seem to have been a simple watchtower:

rather, it's now thought to have been an actual castle.

The theory is that there was no room to extend it,

so the Dukes of Limburg built a new castle instead.

It was, however, the textile industry that made Monschau.

But it's surprisingly difficult to find out how this came about.

Sources seem to agree that one of the first textile manufacturers here was Arnold Schmitz.

The usual story is that he was a Protestant

who fled Aachen during the religious conflicts that resulted from the Reformation.

But this now seems doubtful:

apparently, the Schmitz family was in fact local.

What is certain is that Monschau's remote location meant

it escaped the worst of all those armed conflicts of the 17th century,

allowing its textile industry to quietly grow.

The breakthrough came with Johann Heinrich Scheibler.

His family came from near Cologne,

but he'd been an apprentice at the textile factory in nearby Imgenbroich,

then married the daughter of his master

who just happened to be the widow of a textile manufacturer from Monschau.

He set about modernizing the factory

and exporting high-quality fabrics all over Europe and even to Egypt and Persia.

In Monschau, he built the Red House.

The door with the helmet let to his private apartment;

the door with the pelican to his company headquarters.

Today it is, of course, a museum.

Scheibler's brother-in-law Bartholomäus Troistorff had also founded a factory here,

and his son built this villa for himself.

It's now owned by the town

and used for exhibitions, receptions, and civil wedding ceremonies.

The second half of the 18th century was the high point of Monschau's textile industry.

Unfortunately, the remoteness of the town, which had facilitated its growth,

now hampered it, as the Industrial Revolution almost passed it by.

A railway was eventually built in the 1880s, but even that didn't help.

It closed about 100 years later and is now a cycle path —

but one with an unusual status.

Over to the left of me is Germany.

Over to the right is Germany.

But I am in Belgium.

In 1920, as a result of the Versailles Treaty,

the districts of Eupen and Malmedy were ceded to Belgium.

But this left the railway crossing the border several times,

and so the following year the line and the stations were also handed over to Belgium.

And to this day the path remains on Belgian soil.

Now, you may wonder what's the big deal.

After all, both Germany and Belgium are Schengen Area states,

so it's not as if you need a passport or anything just to cycle or walk along here.

But it is a big deal if you have an accident.

Call the emergency number, and you'll almost certainly get through to a German dispatcher

who will have to pass on your message to a German-speaking dispatcher in Belgium.

To help them, signs at regular intervals carry information

to pinpoint the exact location.

German paramedics will probably be first on the scene,

but the German police won't be allowed to do anything.

That's complicated enough as it is.

But things get even more complicated if somebody decides to sue.

If all the participants are German citizens, then German civil law applies.

In all other cases, the only advice anyone can give you

is find a lawyer who specializes in international law.

Fortunately for Monschau, it narrowly escaped destruction

as US troops advanced into Germany in 1944:

they were able to take the town without much of a fight.

And so it was preserved to become a popular tourist destination.

You may have noticed in the video that I was extremely unlucky with the weather.

In fact, one of the most irritating aspects of my visit

was all the locals telling me I should have been there the previous day.

Fair warning though: even on a rainy day at the tail end of the season

the place was full of tourists.

As I hinted, Monschau has no train station,

but it does have a regular bus service from Aachen.

The SB66 runs as a limited stop service

Mondays to Fridays until the early evening.

At other times of the day and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays,

the less-frequent 66 takes over.

Both these buses take about an hour to reach Monschau.

They don't call at Aachen's central station,

but they do call at Rothe Erde station for local trains to and from Cologne.

By car, Monschau can be reached from the A44 autobahn,

leaving at the Aachen-Lichtenbusch exit

and following the signs for Monschau.

But there is one thing you need to bear in mind about this route,

and that is that between the towns of Roetgen and Konzen it passes through Belgian territory.

Although it is a German road, and it's not even connected to the Belgian road network,

it is still subject to Belgian law.

You'll notice this because it has a 90 km/h speed limit

instead of the usual 100 for a German road.

There are also different regulations regarding things like, for example, blood alcohol limits.

As far as I know, Belgian police don't actually patrol the road

looking for Germans breaking Belgian road traffic regulations.

But if you have an accident, then there may be a problem.

There is an international treaty allowing German paramedics to respond;

but if there's any violation of traffic regulations to be investigated,

that will be handled by the Belgian police and the Belgian courts,

and they will do so according to Belgian law.

In addition, there are a couple of points

where this road crosses the cycle path that I mentioned in the video,

which is also on Belgian territory;

and there you will face the same kind of issues,

so it's even more important than normal to watch for cyclists.

Wheelchair uses will find Monschau challenging, if not completely inaccessible.

Even if you're not in a wheelchair,

some of the footpaths up the Haller can get rather slippery underfoot,

so be especially careful in wet weather.

And finally, I am very happy to report

that at least somebody was pleased to see me.

Marble Rose (acrylic painting) - Duration: 3:06.

In the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7lESHvmD0I

I painted a plywood panel with a marble background image

and now I want to paint a motive in acrylic color on it.

I use an adhesive strip to tape an area on which

I'll paint a semitransparent strip with the spatula.

The adhesive strips are peeled off and the acrylic is allowed to dry.

Now the motive - a rose - is painted on it.

I choose a watercolor-like style, which doesn't

destroy too much the marble background.

Have fun watching.

Thank you for your interest.

Imjingak new year's eve festivities to take place for first time since 2016 - Duration: 1:59.

next we have our conn-young standing by at the imaging resort in in gyeonggi-do

province where New Year's Eve festivities are on young with the venue

is fairly near the military demarcation line separating the two Koreas how close

are you to the border exactly sodium Ginga Cruiser is only seven kilometers

south of the military demarcation line and some 15 kilometers away from the

North Korean city of Kaesong right now I'm standing in front of the imaging of

pavilions peaceful where the lights are turned on to welcome 2019 and behind me

it's really dark so it's hard to see anything but that's the northern side of

the border where North Koreans will also be celebrating the start of a new year

although there's no way to say for sure what kind of celebrations are taking

place in the North tonight South Korean visitors here at Ames inget resort are

hoping for further improvements in inter-korean relations this year saw a

lot of improvement in relations between the two Koreas with a number of

inter-korean summit taking place I hope the road to peace will open up next year

they say North Korean leader Kim jong-un will visit Seoul so hopefully the road

to peace does open

the in Zynga resort was already one of the most famous tourist attractions

related to the Korean War not only for Koreans but also for

foreign visitors but after the historic communism summit back in April the

number of visitors nearly tripled the resort is a symbol of hope for

reunification between the two Koreas and it could see even more visitors next

year as Seoul and Pyongyang continue to work together to achieve lasting peace

on the Korean Peninsula that's all from me for now but as more people gather for

the festivities I'll be back to bring you more of the

atmosphere on our later newscast Daniel

Welcoming the new year at Seoul's Bosingak Pavilion - Duration: 2:50.

people all across the country are ready to celebrate the coming of a new year

our reporters are braving the sub-zero temperatures to show us how Koreans are

partaking in the celebrations first let's turn to our Parque June at the

iconic pushing out pavilion Heejun how are things looking over there right now

hey Daniel it's that time of the year again here at the pushing a pavilion

which is one of the most famous and most popular places to be at New Year's Eve

now we're expecting around 10,000 people to arrive here tonight so as we drop

closer to midnight things are going to get even crazier you're probably going

to hear the noise right now things heating up behind me now we are actually

have around a couple of hours left until the actual bell-ringing ceremony but the

crowds milling around are clearly excited and ready to celebrate there is

no way to really escape the freezing cold even if you wear lots of layers and

use heat packs but that's not stopping families couples and friends from coming

out on the streets and having a blast in the final moments of 2018 now let me

share with you the excitement here at pushing doc take a listen this is my

first time experiencing this event so I'm just really excited to be here and

I'm just excited to see all the stuff that's going to go on I came from Pusan

I've only seen this event on TV and it's my first time to come in person I can

really feel the yeren atmosphere and I'm so excited I'll be watching the bell

ring tonight and I hope everything goes well next year honestly I'm still

getting used to saying 2018 I can definitely see the yeren vibe over there

anything particularly special about the opposition GOG event this year

well the event itself isn't exactly something new and we've been covering

this every year but what I can tell you for sure is that things are going to be

even more exciting and even more livelier than ever before now let me run

you through some of the key vines for tonight's you're probably going to see

the timetable for the ceremony right now but what's going to happen is the line

of itself is an especially new but there is something a bit extra this year next

year marks the 100th anniversary of emerged first independence movements and

establishment of the country's provisional government's so we do have

special events prepared for bats but of course the highlight is the actual bell

ringing ceremony sixteen people including a Seoul mayor will be ringing

the bell and this year's eleven notable citizens include Eagleton a surgeon best

known for saving a North Korean soldier who was shot while defecting to the

south and speedskater is hawa who's a world record holder and won two gold

medals for South Korea at the Winter Olympics they're going to strike the

bell 33 times which is a Buddhist tradition that we use here in the South

so I'm going to be bringing you live updates on that but for now

happy new Daniel

syamuさんの復活が賛否両論!?& お知らせ Legendary Japanese Meme's Return Is Underwhelming? - Duration: 3:49.

Hey, kids it's me PDRsan

Since Syamu (legendary Japanese meme) came back he's put out 3 videos

the reaction has been pretty divided

especially yesterdays

Singing Senbonzakura For The First Time In 4 years

Let's take a look at some of the comments

It's a hard watch

This isn't the syamu we wanted to see

This is not the real syamu

Stop using syamu

#Don'tforgivehisagent

This is not the syamu I want to see

He's not your cashcow

Forcing him to act weird is just cringe...

A lot of people seem to be mad at syamu's agent (who people think are pulling the strings behind the scenes)

Personally I think

the legend of syamu has just become this huge huge thing

whether he has someone helping him or not I don't think it's possible for him to live up to the huge expectations

but

I do have to agree that yesterdays video was bad

and not a so bad it's good bad

just plain bad

A lot of people also said this in the comments

but it just came off as forced

It was just sad to watch

What I personally think is good about syamu

is something that comes naturally

What do you mean?

Much like Bunzin, syamu's videos are usually so bad that they're funny

and the fact that he's oblivious to that adds to the comedy

The weird confidence he has and the way he sometimes lashes out at viewers makes for quality cringe

because this is something natural trying to recreate it just comes off as akward and not funny

I see

so yesterdays video was more like syamu trying to act like syamu

it was on the verge of self parody and I think that's what struck a nerve with a lot of people

but he's only put 3 videos out, so I'm still hoping that he can recreate some of the magic that made him so funny

Yeah

and Syamu's agent!

I don't know how much of syamu you're controlling

once syamu's videos get monetized, you better pay him the money he deserves!

if you don't they'll be hell to pay

we're watching you

Dude

That's creepy even for you

so the year hasn't ended yet

but I doubt I'll hit a million subs in the next few hours

You should of asked for help ages ago!

so I will

not apologize to the Charisma Brothers today

Not this again

I've asked Tomi Tomi to contact them, so it's up to him whether I can meet them and apologize

You can do it Tomi Tomi!

so the year has once again come to an end

man does time fly

To everyone who started watching recently

People who started watching this year

people who have been watching for a while

and my overseas peeps

Thank you so much

it's because of you that I was able to continue what I love for another year

thank you so much

here's to a great 2019

You're nuts

M: I'm nuts?

M: You're right about that

M: That's why you love me right?

Please give me a thumbs up if you enjoyed the video(^o^)b
