Hi there and welcome! In this video I'm
going to share with you 24 sometimes
surprising things you don't actually
need. Now more than ever is a great time
to declutter your life and eliminate a
lot of the unnecessary hassle that we
all unwittingly put ourselves through
from time to time. And that hassle
usually comes from having stuff laying
around that you don't truly need. Less is
more and I've said this in my video about
10 things and I no longer buy anymore
which I will link up here in the cards
and down below and that is that when you
decide to simplify your life and say no
to the things you don't actually need,
you send a really powerful message to
your subconscious mind which tells it
that "I CONTROL MY REALITY". Having control
of your physical space is very important
to achieving self mastery and that's why
I am sharing some of my ideas on
minimalism here on my channel. I need to
disclaim though: I'm not a hardcore
minimalist. I live in an apartment in the
United States and Utah specifically. I
know some people have an idea of a
minimalist life saying "no more than a
hundred things". I don't necessarily buy
that. There are things that I have that I
enjoy but I try to keep things as simple
as possible and eliminate a lot of the
unnecessary clutter. So some of the
things that I've learned, I'm sharing
here with you in this video. So if you
want to know those 24 things that you
don't actually need, keep watching!
[Music]
I'm Nancy Da Costa and this is my third
video in my minimalism series here on my
channel. If you happen to be new here, I
publish new videos every Monday about
developing your awareness, growing thick
skin, and living an out of the ordinary
life. And yes, living an out of the
ordinary life means keeping things
simple and eliminating unnecessary
clutter and stress as well. So if you
like this video and if you like that
kind of thing, I invite you to consider
subscribing to my channel. Like I said, I
publish new videos every Monday. So with
that out of the way, here's 24 things you
don't actually need. Number one: multiple
belts. Do you have more than one or two
belts laying around in your closet that
you don't wear? Look, it's okay to have at
least one belt. I totally understand you
don't want your pants falling (nobody
does) and it's okay to have maybe one in
another color. But if you have belts in
your closet that you've not worn, you've
not used, and they look like something
else, or they don't fit you, then get rid
of it. Number two: tons of makeup. This
applies to ladies only, but unless you
happen to be a beauty professional or
run a beauty channel, you don't need more
than a couple of shades of eyeshadow.
You don't need more than one eyeliner,
you don't need a lot of those products
that you buy.
I know I've definitely been suckered
into this. In my life, like all women, we
do care about our appearance and taking
care of ourselves but the simple fact is that
aside from a few staples, you don't need
a whole collection of them. Most of the time
you don't so the next time you're about
to buy another piece of makeup to add to
your collection, consider saying no.
Number three: fancy kitchen appliances.
Things like waffle makers, panini makers,
giant crock pots, giant mixers. Unless
you're using those things at least once
a week you don't actually need them. You
can make soup in a normal pot over your
stove. You can use a simple flat pan to
make a sandwich or grill a sandwich.
You don't need a waffle maker. You really
don't. You can make pancakes.
They have the same ingredients and you can
also
use a griddle for that. And a lot of
times these fancy kitchen appliances -
they take up a lot of space. So if you
get rid of them or if you say no to them
or if you choose not to add them to your
registry, you'll find that you won't even
notice. You won't miss any of those
things.
Number four: digital cameras. These days
our smart phones take really good photos.
I actually just sold my old
point-and-shoot that I've had for six
years. I just sold it on eBay. I
don't plan to replace it. Now that's not
to say that you don't need another
camera - if you are recording videos on
YouTube like I record videos on YouTube -
I have an SLR camera to record high
quality videos, but for normal photo
taking purposes, for everyday photos you
can get by just fine with your
smartphone. In fact, your smartphone
probably takes better photos than a lot
of point-and-shoot cameras. And it's one
less thing to carry. So if you have old
point and shoots or point and shoots that
you don't use, consider selling them on a
website like eBay or decluttr. Number
five - baby oil. It's one of those
chemicalized products. I used to use baby
oil when I was coming out of the shower
to moisturize my skin, but I recently
discovered that coconut oil is not only
more natural, it's also way better for
your skin. And it's one less thing that I
need to worry about buying. So you don't
actually need baby oil if you're using
that as moisturizer I recommend trying
coconut oil. It's a natural moisturizer,
it's better for your skin, and while I'm
at it I'm gonna add all skin
moisturizers as well. You don't actually
need them. Maybe something for your hands,
maybe a hand cream next to your bed, that
might be one thing, but you don't need a
whole lot of different moisturizers for
your legs or other parts of your body.
Number six - shaving cream. Same thing! You
can use coconut oil as shaving cream as
well. This is something I've also
discovered. So literally no coconut oil.
Kills two birds with one stone. Number
seven - cable TV. Do you really need to
watch cable TV? Seriously, you can
probably get by with YouTube videos. I
personally love YouTube. I love watching
my favorite creators put up videos
online every day or every couple of days
and I don't use Netflix personally, but
Netflix is something that you can get as
well. You don't need cable TV. I don't
even know how much it costs. I know I
remember it was kind of at least $50 a
month. I'm not sure that if that's
accurate (I didn't research it before
recording this video) but if you've got
cable TV, you really don't need it. You
can get by with a regular TV. At a
minimum, you can watch stuff online. Your
news online. We don't need cable TV.
Number seven - a landline phone. These days
everybody has a cell phone. Nobody uses
landline unless you're in an office
setting. You don't need to be paying for
a landline phone. Personally, I haven't
had one in years. I don't miss it. I think
it's a bit outdated. I think usually
people who have it are not as up on
technology as some other people, but you
yourself you don't actually need a
landline phone. Use your smartphone.
Number eight - the news. The news is really
really bad for your psyche. You don't
need to watch the news. You don't need to
read the news. Sure, there's some global
events you can quickly Google them. You
can find stuff online, but the general
news, like the local news of the
different awful things that have
happened in your local area. You don't
need it. It adds no value to you and to
add to that, newspapers and things and
periodicals, use an e-reader. Use
something like a Kindle Fire or an iPad
or a tablet of some sort to read your
news or just use your laptop. You don't
actually need the news. First of all you
don't need the news in your life and you
definitely don't need to collect
periodicals. Newspapers, magazines, and
whatnot. You don't need any of that.
Number nine - a bath mat. You don't need a
bath mat. I don't know what the purpose
of a bath mat is. I think I had a bath
mat for all of five minutes. I actually
slipped on it. I don't think it's
necessary. I think it's just another
waste of money. You don't need a bath mat.
Number ten - refrigerator magnets. Do you
collect a lot of spammy swaggie type
refrigerator magnets from different
people or different organizations?
Honestly I think it looks a little bit
tacky. It's not to say that you can't use
a magnet to put something on your
refrigerator that is useful, but to have
a refrigerator covered in magnets -
personally I think it's a bit immature. I
think it looks juvenile. You don't need
excessive magnets.
Number eleven - birthday cards. I don't know
anyone who does birthday cards.
Personally I think my mother-in-law
sends birthday cards. I personally when I
receive a birthday card or if I receive
a birthday card, I'll just take photo and
then recycle the card.
I appreciate things electronically. I
think that we could all do a little bit
of our part to save paper and have
less waste, and the truth of the matter
is you don't actually need a birthday
card. You can just make a phone call and
the other person would thoroughly
appreciate just talking to you for a few
minutes. No need for birthday cards.
Number twelve -
you don't need tons of photo albums. If
you have old photos and albums laying
around, it might be time to consider
looking into a scanning service. Ways to
get your old photos scanned and archived
electronically. This is something that I
personally haven't done yet, but I plan
on doing it. I do have old photo albums
that are taking up space and they do
have a little bit of sentimental value -
I'll give it that, but what I plan to do
is actually scan those photos and keep
them electronically. That way I can keep
the memories while getting rid of it, but
my point is you don't need a ton of
photo albums. If anything, if you have
pictures that are important to you, the
best thing to do is to actually make a
canvas print and hang them on your wall.
That way you see them all the time.
That's not to say that all photo albums
are defunct - I think it's nice to have a
wedding photo album or like your baby's
first photos, but excessive photo albums
are completely unnecessary. Number
fourteen -
rental car insurance. You don't need
rental car insurance. Most credit cards -
if you book a car - if you book a rental
car, most credit cards have that
insurance along with it whenever you use
a credit card to book a car. You don't
need to pay, I don't know how well how
much it is like thirty dollars a day for
rental insurance, don't need to pay for
it. You don't need it. Next time you rent
a car, if you ever do rent cars, just
decline the rental insurance option.
Number fifteen - magazines. You don't need
a stack of magazines - read your articles
online, or if you really like photos and
things just go on Pinterest. Number 16 -
excessive toys, whether or not for
children or for pets. The simple fact is
your child or
your pet does not need a ton of toys. I
can't speak as a parent. I'm not a
parent. I don't know what parenting is
like, but I do have a dog and to be
honest with you we've given him toys in
the past and either he's ripped them
apart in 15 minutes or less or he
ignores them because he has his favorite
toy that he plays with all the time. So
you don't need excessive toys. If you
have a lot of toys laying around and
they're not being used, just get rid of
them.
Number 17 cookbooks - you don't need
cookbooks. Cookbooks used to be nice once
upon a time, but the fact is you can
Google a lot of new recipes online and
there's always new recipes coming out.
People are always creating new things, so
you don't need cookbooks. Next time
somebody gives you a cookbook, just say
thank you and then just sell it to
someone else or give it to somebody else
who might appreciate it, but you yourself -
you don't need cookbooks. Number 18 - books
that you won't read more than once. If
you have books laying around that you
bought and you read it one time, or you
bought and you never read it,
then it's time to get rid of them. You
don't actually need them. There are these
amazing places called libraries where
you can borrow books for free and you
can return them and I know I'm being a
little bit sarcastic, but I'm trying to
emphasize the point that you don't need
books laying around that you won't read
more than once. You can just go to the
library, borrow it, read it, return it
clutter free. Number 19 - old smartphones
that you no longer use. I myself
sometimes I'll use an old phone to
listen to music in the car because I
don't like to plug my normal phone in
and out all the time (I like to charge it
as little as possible) I like to give it
a full charge of not be charging it all
the time because it's bad for the
battery, and sometimes I've used my smart
phone to listen to audiobooks or listen
to other things in the car, but the fact is I
have an iPod that I use in the car only,
and it works just fine. If you have old
smartphones laying around that you don't
use, you can wipe it and then you can
turn around and actually recycle
it or if it has some value left you
might actually get like a small gift
card.
I know Apple does this. I don't know
about
other manufacturers, but you can
actually get money back for your old
smartphone. So if you have an old
smartphone laying around that you really
don't need, I'd take a look at wiping it
and getting rid of it. Number 20 - old
cords and chargers for things that you
don't even have anymore.
This is something I mentioned in my last
video - if you have old cords old chargers,
excessive USB cables that you don't use
or you don't need - just throw them
out just get rid of them now if you
happen to charge your phone in different
places, it's okay to have extra phone
chargers and one of the things that I
will share here - one way to make a
charger lasts longer is to add a little
bit of black masking tape over the edges.
That way it kind of keeps them
intact and it prevents the bending. I try
not to bend the chargers, the charging
cables at certain points because then it
starts to fray, which isn't good. But you
can use the masking tape and get those
charging cords to last longer. Having
said that, if you have charging cords for
things you don't even want anymore,
it's time to throw it out. Normal
household waste. I don't think you can
recycle them and just get rid of them.
Clear them out - you don't need them.
Number 21 - you don't need an electric
kettle. This is something that we've
learned this year. We've actually gone
through two electric kettles that have
corroded. There's a lot of magnesium in
the water here in Utah. That's something
that we just learned, but my point is
they still would have broken down. The
fact is if we had just gotten a stovetop
kettle from the very beginning (and by
the way we have a stovetop kettle right
now) that's what we're using, we've just
decided to stop with the electric
kettles. They were costing us a lot and
not serving us. So if you don't actually
need an electric kettle, get a stovetop
kettle - a really nice stovetop kettle,
stainless steel and it'll last you for a
long time if you take care of it. And you
don't have to worry about electricity or
anything like that. Number 22 - you don't
need exfoliator products. This is another
beauty product that's sold and people
think that they need it, but you don't
need the exfoliator products like the
different things that you put on your
skin. Get a back brush if you want to
exfoliate or scratch your back you can
get one of those brushes that they sell
on Amazon. That's okay to have but a lot
of those exfoliators for your skin -
they're not actually good for your skin
most of the time. It's ok
sometimes but you're not meant exfoliate
every day and you don't actually need
them in all honesty. They're
just beauty products they're just trying
to sell stuff they're trying to make
money all fine but you don't really need
those things. Number 23 -
you don't need paid credit monitoring
services. This is something I talked
about in my video about things that I
don't buy anymore - the simple fact is if
you want to check your credit score, if
you want to get your credit report, you
don't need to pay for it. You can use a
service such as Nerdwallet which I use
and there's others like Credit Sesame
and Credit Karma which I don't know much
about. I've never used them so I can't
attest for them, but you can get all that
information in Nerdwallet for free and
it doesn't cost you anything.
Nerdwallet didn't pay me to make this
video it's not sponsored but if you need
credit information you don't need to pay
for it. You can just go and get that
Nerdwallet or one of those websites.
And finally the 24th thing you don't
actually need are those little app
subscriptions you might have on your
phone. The thing with apps and smart
phones in general is a lot of really
amazing apps have come out in the last
several years and apps - they're also
they're distracting but they also do
service they do help make things a
little bit easier thanks communicating
on mobile devices but sometimes when you
get an app for the first time you have
to pay a monthly subscription fee for
some of them (not for all of them). Have a
look at your credit card statement and
look at those recurring fees and think
to yourself if you actually need those
recurring app purchase charges. I know
it's one thing if there's an app that
you use and you have to buy at one time
that's one thing I'm not gonna address
it but if you have apps that are
charging you two dollars a month it
doesn't seem like a lot but those little
charges add up over time. If you don't
actually need that subscription go in
and cancel them. Now is a better time
more than ever for that. So there you
have it - those are 24 things that you
don't actually need in your life. And I
know that those were a random list and
some of them are a little bit minor, not
that big a deal, but I found that
a lot of these things if by just
consolidating and just getting rid of
stuff, it actually just makes life easier
and clearer. And helps you think better.
So I hope you enjoyed it and before I go
I just want to say one thing - You don't
need most of the things that you buy.
You don't need most of the
things that you buy. The fact is most the
time when we buy stuff we usually do it
mostly to impress other people or to
elevate our social status. The fact is
you don't actually need to do that. You
don't need to keep up with the Joneses.
You can live a simple life or you can
have a simple home and it doesn't need
to impress anybody. It can be clear and
clutter-free and just have the things
that you need, without the things that
you don't. But just keep in mind next
time you're buying something next time
you're about to make a purchase really
ask yourself is it something that you
actually need? Can you live without it?
Can you get by without it? Because the
fact is if you can do that, if you can
build that practice in, you'll save more
money over time and you'll have way less
hassle in your life. Because you won't
have to go through these decluttering
phases of getting rid of stuff that you
don't need. Now I want to hear from you -
are there things that you've discovered
you don't actually need? Is there stuff
lying around? I hope that you like
this video. If you liked it give it a
thumbs up here on YouTube it really
helps me out a lot and of course if you
haven't already, consider subscribing to
my channel. I publish new videos just
like this one
every Monday. Thank you so much for
watching! You guys are awesome! Thank You
for being with me here towards the end
of the video, and I will catch you next
time. Buh-bye!
