So the gospel for this coming Sunday is the famous gospel about the five wise
and the five foolish virgins who go out to meet the bridegroom with their lamps.
Five of them, the wise ones, bring oil, and the foolish ones don't have enough oil
to keep the lamps alight. As I did a little bit of research into this story, I
realized that I had in my mental image these lamps being small flames, but in
fact, they're more like torches where they had sort of rags dipped in the
oil and that would keep the torches alight, and it occurred to me that many
times we can feel, a lot of us, I think, like we're the foolish virgins, having
run out of oil; we're kind of running...we're running out
of gas, it seems, and the the fire and the urgency of our original faith
seems to be waning, and this particularly at a time when perhaps it's needed most
of all - Christians who are on fire and alive in the faith. And so how do we, how
do we, rekindle that flame in our heart? How do we make sure we never run out of
oil? And the answer, of course, is holiness; it's really learning how to fall in love
again. You know, when two married people are struggling in their relationship,
we'll often sort of ask them to go back to what brought them together to begin
with, you know, and also encourage them to do
what lovers do, which is to spend time together, to communicate better, and I
think the same is true for us, we who were supposed to be lovers of God, when
the flame seems to be drawing low, to remember what brought us together to
begin with: how God drew us so gently towards his Sacred Heart, and also how to
communicate better, to do what lovers do, spending more time with our Lord and
nourishing our own interior life, our prayer life, so that the flame never goes
out, so we never run out of the oil, and we can light other souls on fire as well
because of the flame of love that's in our own heart. So that's my plan for this
coming Sunday, and looking forward to it. God Bless.
