They take the poison out first
and make sure it's save to drink.
- What? It's a poisonous snake!? - Yes, very poisonous.
WHAT!?
They have pineapples and those Shekwasha lemons, let's have a look.
Ok let's have a look.
"Haisai!" (hello in Okinawa language)
- It's Cathy Cat - It's Haruna from Okinawa.
Let's enjoy Okinawa.
And today we are going to check out fun gifts you can get here in Okinawa.
There is so much fun stuff!
We have arrived at Kokusai Doori, "Internatinal Street."
I heard there are items you can get only here, in Okinawa.
I want to get some great goodies for my family and friends so please tell us.
Actually on International Street are MANY souvenir shops.
Yeah, there are lots!
But among them I know a place that has goods that are better in quality
and a large variety of Okinawan goods. It's my favorite shop so let's go there together.
Let's go to your recommended shop then.
This is the place I'd recommend you. The Washita Shop.
Ok let's check it out then.
There is a special mango shop outside already. - Looks so tasty.
There are some mango here too.
To be honest, I got my friends to send me mango from Okinawa before.
I was really surprised just how sweet they are!
They have a rich taste.
Personally, mango have been my favorite Okinawan gifts so far.
Okinawa famous for mangoes but also pineapples and Shekwasha lemons,
let's have a look.
Ok let's have a look.
There is something that looks like a lemon?
Are those the Okinawan Shekwasha lemons you mentioned?
We use this on Sashimi (raw fish), or add water and drink it as juice.
And people who like alcohol use it as mixer? - That's right you can add it to alcohol too.
- It has a refreshing taste. - Isn't it sour?
It is but if you add a bit of sugar it's just right.
Apparently they have a special alcohol here... That one!
That one surprised me. It has a real snake inside the bottle.
Yes it's a Habu, Okinawan pit viper.
They take the poison out first and make sure its save to drink.
- What? It's a poisonous snake!? - Yes, very poisonous.
The poison is in the teeth.
WHAT?!
THAT'S SCARY!
What's this snake alcohol again?
It's called Habu-shu and it tastes of herbs.
They generally contain about 13 different herbs as well.
Everyone thinks it tastes of animal and go "ewww"
But it's actually a type of alcohol that's said to be very healthy.
We also have tiny bottles for those who want to try.
Oh it's tiny.
That's good as a gift too.
The bottles that contain the snake, you can re-use by adding Awamori alcohol again.
Or just add Japanese sake with a high percentage
and the snake extracts will make it tasty again.
So you can drink it twice.
That's right.
Let's try if we get super healthy with this.
It's said to help with circulation.
What's different to it compared to normal alcohol...
You don't drink it like a drink, you drink little sips over a span of several days.
Try it.
Oh alright...
What does it taste like?
Slightly sweet.
Let's try this. KANPAI! (Cheers)
.....................
Oh!
It actually tastes nice.
The snake is happy to hear that.
The happy snake.
It has a nice fragrance.
It doesn't have a weird aftertaste .
It tastes of herbs.
I didn't expect that from the looks of it.
It smells nice.
Some people can't deal with the snake but
many customers say it actually tastes better than they expected it.
Do foreigners buy it too? - Yes it's popular.
It's a good gift because it has a big visual appearance but tastes good too.
Instead of making me sleepy it kind of woke me up. I feel refreshed now.
There is a famous tea we drink in Okinawa.
I like Lolita fashion, and I love to drink tea.
This is SANPIN TEA.
- The package is cute. - It has little Shisa with it.
What does it taste like?
It tastes of Jasmin tea. It's a type of Jasmin tea.
It's very refreshing and it also has a nice fragrance.
I might get that one for my collection...
Have you heard about Okinawan Black Sugar?
We have many sugar plants and take the essence out of the stem and make sugar.
Can you eat it just like that? - You can, or just add it to your food.
Those are blocks of sugar, so you can add them to coffee too.
There are many ways of using it and it's said to be healthy too.
I see. - It contains many minerals.
Better than white sugar?
Yes, black sugar is famous for being healthier.
This looks good. There are different types in one box.
How cute.
Oh it says these sugars are from different Okinawan islands.
They are from different island farms.
Oh its also written in English! Aguni Island, Tejima Island... and such...
That's interesting.
I like that one here. Thanks for pointing it out to me.
The package is so cute.
Are there any other things that could go into our top 10?
Chinsukou cookies are very famous.
Chinsukou? What's that?
Probably the most famous Okinawan gift. Cookies.
They have these cookies for 100yen in a small size too.
So you can buy them to try them yourself.
Or as gift.
For 100yen the package is actually quite big.
If I buy 10 of them I can hand these to 10 of my friends.
So you can give lots of gifts.
My personal recommendation number one is...
Oh number one here we go.
Beni-imo Sweet Potato tarts.
Is that a type of Okinawan potato?
Beni-imo are famous Okinawan sweet potatoes.
They are turned into a bite sized tart.
That's my personal favorite. - If you say it, I will try it.
There we go Beni-imo Tarts.
That's the one! That's the one!!!
These ones here! I was looking for them.
Face masks? - Yes great face masks!
If you put these on your face with a friend, it will look so funny!
You can wear a beauty shisa face mask.
And your skin gets super nice afterwards.
I have used these ones before, so that's why I wanted some more.
- Soft skin? - super nice.
Shisa are actually Okinawan house guardians.
They also have little Shisa to put up in your house.
In Okinawa you can see many Shisa in front of people's houses.
One has an open mouth, and then the other's mouth is always closed.
But I forgot why...
Let's ask a staff member what that means.
Let's find out.
Here we are, we called over a staff member.
Ok so what are Shisa actually?
They are guardian spirits of Okinawa.
You can see them on rooftops and such, protecting the house.
They guard it.
The one with the open mouth is the MALE. The closed mouth is the FEMALE.
The male sucks in the bad things that could harm the house.
It eats the bad stuff away? - That's kind of right.
So that one then keeps the good stuff in? - You got it!
Are those popular among travelers too? - They totally are.
Since we called you over here, can you recommend us some other popular items?
This is called Ryukyu glass.
Older people in Okinawa add ice cubes to them
an add Awamori alcohol to it when having a drink.
We also use Ryukyu glass at weddings in Okinawa.
This is a quality mark that proves it's designed and made in Okinawa.
So it makes sure its not a fake.
It looks pretty even if you just add water.
Many people use them for Instagram pictures.
I use them at home too. I made my own too.
I use it daily.
Bingata is a dying technique that really draws out the traditional colors.
This is very traditional for Okinawa.
This has a long history.
They also do little hairbands and cute things like that with it.
You can just wear the tradition as hairties.
Washita Shop is a real Okinawan shop.
If you come from abroad we will try our best, if needed using hands gestures
to help you out. We will try our very best so it will be nice if you come visit us.
We are waiting for you.

I got my own Shisa mask now and someone special of you guys will get it.
