Car And Driver Reviews New Audi RS5 2017 review - Duration: 6:58.

The new Audi RS5 is refined, comfortable and easy to live with, but the switch to a downsized

V6 dents the fun.Verdict The Audi RS5 is ballistic in a straight line,

sticks like little else in the corners and yet it's refined, comfortable and easy to

live with at the same time.

However, buyers can get 90 per cent of that feeling from a slightly less powerful car

in the A5 range - and this top-end model just isn't as sharp as its rivals from BMW and

Mercedes.

It's also missing a crucial ingredient that made previous models fun - a great engine. It's

not too difficult to guess what Audi is planning when it launches a new model - first we had

the all-new A4, which spawned the A5 coupe.

After that came the hotter S5, and now we've driven the brand new, top-of-the line RS5,

the quickest of the lot.

What we didn't expect, however, was the move to a turbocharged V6 from the previous

RS5 model's stunning V8.

That's why we were intrigued to find out if the new compact executive flagship can

really take on the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe and BMW M4 with its new downsized powertrain.

It's not just the engine that's shrinking, as the new model is also 60kg lighter than

before.

That bodes well but, unfortunately, our first drive indicates that the Audi RS5 is destined

to keep the same position as before relative to its rivals - it can't match them for

driving thrills. The new engine is a big part of that, as it feels - and sounds - flat.

It's nowhere near as exciting as the old V8, nor the V8 in the Mercedes.

Even the turbo straight-six in the BMW M4 has more character.

Similar to the unit in the S5, the V6 appears to have been designed to deliver performance

on a spec sheet rather than excitement on the road.

It'll do 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, and does feel extremely quick when you hit the throttle,

but the dull engine note and torquey power delivery mean it's more like a big diesel

than a frantic, exciting petrol in character.

The torque figure of 600Nm is eye-catching on the spec sheet and you can certainly feel

it on the road.

From 1,900rpm to 5,000rpm it surges, though the top-end is sacraficed somewhat so short-shifting

is the way to go here.

The eight-speed tipronic automatic gearbox is pretty good, changing gear quickly and

smoothly.

A parp from the exhaust on each upshift will please some (and annoy others), but the gearbox's

only real issue is the set of plastic, click paddles on the back of the wheel that feel

cheap.

The RS5 is mighty in a straight line, especially as that four-wheel drive system means the

wheels stick to the road under power - and it's the same story in the corners.

It's easy to throw into bends and launch out of them, relying on the clever torque

control system to send power where it can help pivot the car around the apex. There's

loads of grip, but the RS5 is still behind the M4 and C63 in terms of fun in the corners.

It tends towards understeer unless you push it really hard - something that requires perfect

road conditions (or a track).

The others feel more playful and rewarding at ordinary speeds.

The RS5 is great if you simply want to go really fast down a great road, but we'd

like it to make the whole process feel more special.

The RS5's quick steering and grippy chassis are complimented by a stiff suspension set-up

when you select Dynamic mode.

This reduces roll and makes the car feel sharper - and the steering is weighted well and has

a decent amount of feel.

It's still a little way behind an M4 on that front, though.

Flip the adaptive dampers into comfort mode and the RS5 settles down very well.

It's much more refined than a BMW M4 when you're driving normally, and felt pretty

comfortable on our French test route.

While the RS5 has a dual character with its driving modes, it's clearly focused on comfort

over ultimate sharpness.

The Dynamic mode doesn't make it feel like a different car, just a slightly stiffer one.

That cosseting character is in evidence again on the motorway where the RS5 is quiet, composed

and, yes, comfy.

The seats, driving position and high-quality interior all contribute to the RS5's 'fast

cruiser' feel.

Of course the torquey engine means overtaking is a cinch, and it's more economical than

before as well - though 32.5mpg isn't exactly frugal.

If you're thinking of buying an RS5 on the basis that it's a fast all-rounder that

won't cost the earth to run, an S5 - or even the 249bhp high-power four-cylinder petrol

- is a whole lot cheaper to buy.

You still get all of those things that make it a top motorway cruiser and, as we've

explained, the RS5 doesn't quite deliver in the areas where a truly great performance

coupe should excel.

Still, many buyers will be happy simply knowing that their car is the fastest, most expensive

A5 in the range - and of course the cabin's red stitching, Alcantara trim and sport seats

mean it has the best interior of the bunch.

Audi's always impressive interior design is out in full force here, beating all comers

with its neat, clean styling, hi-tech infotainment system and beautiful materials all around.

The exterior matches that, too - it's aggressive without being overblown, and the sporty exterior

add-ons really suit the RS5.

The LED headlights with vents at the sides hint at previous RS models, and the wider

grille gives the Audi a very smart look.

iDesignX Live Summit Presentation - Paul King - Duration: 22:20.

Okay just for the sake of my facebook

live feed I'll just show everybody the

audience there and i'll tell you why

later why i'm actually using facebook

live as well. It's part of one of the

tips that i'm going to be talking about

today so I hope we have lined that up

okay. Okay, so, when you're lining up a

video you don't want to have too much

headspace first tip for the day, okay?

easily just about a hand. Alright so, my

goal today is to help you to take your

teaching to the next level and I think

the fact that you're here today means

that you're a hundred percent committed to that.

Video, YouTube, second largest

search engine in the world it's really

like a giant learning platform isn't it?

is there anything that you can't learn

on youtube? How to videos for everything.

How to you- your plumbing breaks down,

doesn't matter what type of system

you got. It might be obscure somebody's

got a video on, to help you to fix that.

You want to bake a cake? Doesn't matter

what type of cake, somebody's going to

have a video on that. You go to ikea like

i do you come home and you put

everything you know in reverse back to

front and falls over there's a video to

help you. You can never read those

instructions. They're terrible. So, there's a

video for everything and so what you

need to do is you need to get on the

bandwagon to engage your students and

leverage your time with video.

My goal,

as I said is to- to help you create learning videos that will take it to the

next level i'm going to go through a

bunch of tips that's going to help you to

do that it's not that difficult.

First tip, first big tip, and this is the saying

that some of you may know, oor those in

the industry know the best camera that

you have is the one that you have on you

who hasn't got a smartphone on them

today? I didn't think so. Okay, some people

sleep with them next to it next to them.

Now, you've got- you've got the phone on

you at all times.

If you know how to shoot a decent

video at the end of this conference

today like I'm going to do I'm going to

interview a couple of people. Now, wouldn't

it be great to go home and having

interviewed a couple of other

professionals from your area related to

what you do that you can share with your

students or your learning organization

or your business. So, if you know how to

use a smartphone effectively you can do that.

so as I was introduced before my

name's Paul King. I've been in education

for over 20 years. Lots of different

roles. Developer, social media strategist

for seven years, I've developed websites, I've

been a teacher for 20 years and I do

I've done video production. I've been

involved for the last five years and now

i have my own video production company.

So, you can see a bit of a timeline here.

so in the early days with the scratchy

videos, no sound then you've got in the

middle that you've got a high-end

production set up there or camera that's

used in movies, TV, etc., and then you got

your smartphone. Now, if you went back 20

years, the high-end production camera the

smartphone is the same quality is what

you had 20 years ago in the studio. So,

you've got this amazing piece of

technology in your hand you just need to

know how to use it. So, I'm going to go

through seven mistakes made by amateurs

and how you can easily avoid them.

First one so many people do this. Where's my

other phone? We're looking at our phones

we always look at our phones like this

and then we see something- oh, let's film

that. No, it's like that. What are your

screens look like? They look like that.

They don't look like that. Okay, so first tip

you shoot horizontally in landscape not

in portrait. However, I would say and

there was somebody who mentioned this today,

if you're shooting video specifically

for certain social media sites like

snapchat

or say Instagram then yes it's okay to

hold it like that because their videos are

vertical. But, for most videos you need to

shoot horizontally and we've all seen

news broadcasts and there's breaking

footage and someone's got their iphone

like this and there's you know black on

either side and just this little strip

or YouTube videos like that. It's a

really simple tip but just that alone

can make a big difference with your

video. Hold your phone horizontally. Next

tip, you-re you've done 10 takes and then

you finally nailed it. you're getting

to the end of the video and someone

calls you on the phone. You know how many

times this happened to me? Set your

airplane mode to on. Okay? and then you

won't give those interruptions and you

will get them and it'll always happen

Murphy's Law little always happen when

you're doing your best recording so

that's another tip for you and don't

forget to turn it back off again to

receive those important calls. You might

think at the end of the day; Gee, haven't

got many calls today. Okay, next tip is

when you talk to somebody. You usually talk

to them at a high level. Okay? That's what

you need to film now I've got my tripod

set up today I'm talking to myself here

but I'm looking at myself at eye level

so to speak. I'm looking at my audience

obviously and i'm talking to them at eye

level. If the camera was really low or

really high would be a bit strange so

you've got two shots there now one with

the camera really low and a lot of

people they'll use where's my little

gorilla pod thingy here. They set it up

and they put on the cafe table or the

desk and it's like that you know and

you're talking down to people and when

you talk down to people it's like you

have more authority or more power you

know unless if your politician or something but

you don't really- that's what you- you

don't want to project that. You want to

come across as natural as personable as

warm and so you want to talk at eye

level if you hold it up too high now

you've probably seen movies where you

know there's a reason why they have the

higher shot so he's looking down the

person they diminish their weak you know

and if you use the camera too high as

well, your message is diminished as well

so that tip hold or set up your camera

at eye level so to set up your camera

and to have it steady, I use a tripod. Now,

people use selfie sticks I was at there

for yesterday I was going to use a

selfie stick and because i'm a bit of a

bit of a shaky hand was like yeah more

shake so I just- I didn't set up my

tripod I just held my hand against the

glass because you've got the nice light

come in and took a shot like that i

recorded myself like that. If you haven't

got a tripod, there's different ways you

can hold your elbows in like this and

steady your shot. You know different ways

that you can use it. But, if you're

serious about video and creating

smartphone videos invest in one of these.

They are about $95 at the end of the

presentation there's a link to a whole

lot of gear that you guys can get from a

good friend of mine Pacific hifi in

Sydney and Frankie's got a link there so

you can get actually really good prices

on this and some other devices i'm going

to talk about today so if you do get a

tripod once again if you get it like an

inexpensive one it might only come up to

here or here here you wanted to come up

trying to reconnect okay very good, that's the

internet here so you want to make

sure you buy it and you don't get home

and then you know you're still looking

down so you need to get a decent tripod

so this is a great one here because I

can actually pull this out I've got a

monopod as well and what I love about

this is i can easily adjust it and level

it because on professional stands you've

got to adjustment there let's say you're

on an uneven surface you're shooting

outside now we now go to adjust this

leg, I've got to adjust that leg

with this under here just pull out that

and it just- it moves it with this does

the same so it's a really good tripod.

I was looking around myself when I

started recording smartphone videos for

a decent tripod. Okay, so, we're back

online here. Next tip

and I'm breaking this tip right now; use

your back camera when you can not your

front camera. Now, the back camera is

always higher quality. So, if you've got

someone else to set up the shot for you

like I haven't got someone there

monitoring my shot. So, I'm using the

front camera but if I had the back

camera it would be higher quality my

phone's 8 megapixels compared to 12 okay?

So, on some phones, there's a big difference. So,

if you if you've got someone else with

you, set up- you get them to set up the

shot and in my online course, we are going

to all the the details about framing a

shot properly which would be here like

an hour later however when you're- if you

can use your back camera not your front

camera if you're by yourself obviously

you're going to use the front camera but

that's where you need to get good

lighting and in actual fact there's really

poor lighting up the front here I'm

surprised it's got a better light but then

you know go with what you've got so the

next tip is I'm recording my video now

we're used to looking at screen, aren't we?

all the time we're used to looking at the

screen we watch videos watch facebook

whatever it might be and recording video

and looking at the screen oh I'm not

looking at the lens you can see the

difference there I'm looking at the- the

lens and the screen there's only a

slight difference but you're not looking

at the camera. it's really important to

look at the camera because people feel

like you're speaking to them. You know in

a lot of professional video shoots so

many people theyr'e looking on there and they

just look to the side like that and they

just don't realize how dodgy that looks

like- you know? Or how shifty it looks

so if you are looking at a camera don't

look away like that either just keep

looking at the camera and there's

another thing as well people do. They

replicate the lens. So, they look at the

camera which is great but then they-

cameras don't blink and they start like

this as well and they- you know they don't

blink either and it looks you know

bit scary actually so when you're- here's

another tip when you're looking at the

lens or the camera think-

imagine it's your best student, your best

friend, best person in the world because

then if you're doing that how're you going

to talk to them? More conversational tone,

you're going to be a lot warmer you know

you're going to be totally different

than just thinking oh it's the lens there

okay in my online course I go into a lot

of details actually because what I found-

what happened to me is that I've been

behind the camera for many years and

that was my thing someone say oh you

might want to get in front no now I'm

behind the camera behind on behind the

camera and I thought- I've filmed

literally hundreds of teachers like you

guys they can just present you know

front of a lot of people students they

get in from the camera it's like oh Hi, I'm

Paul and- and it happened to me too it's

a normal thing. I- there's only one out of

ten teachers and anyone really it can

just present naturally now I was the

same and I learned techniques so that I

could present naturally and

authentically to camera and on my online

course, I'm actually going to details. So, I

think it's really important you might

have a great looking video but then if

you can't present well it's still not a

professional vide. Poor presenting good

looking. Okay, next tip next tip and the

gentleman was presenting before on

video. Also I mentioned this, just briefly

you need to lock your exposure when

you're presenting. So, let's say for

example today I'm interviewing somebody

after this event. What I'm going to do

I'm going to go into an app because I'm

on Android it's called open camera don't

figure it out, you'll have a link to

download all these tips at the end of

presentation. Open camera and you can go

in that's got the lock you can see the

lock there that's actually from open

camera is a whole lot different settings

but the most important one is locking

that exposure. In actual fact talking

about front-facing and back facing

facing cameras I can lock my exposure

with the back-facing camera, not with the

front-facing camera because it's not

higher quality- high enough quality

but anyways what you need to do is lock

it because if not exposure is amount

of light coming in. OK? So, if particularly

if you've got a lot of light behind you

which you'd normally want to avoid you

want the light in front of you you can

get- if people are moving around if you

even if you're moving around you can get

a lot of change in the exposure and that

makes a really amateur look you know the

videos going dark and light you're

becoming dark and light so what you do

is you get the exposure right by

clicking on the screen usually on your

face if you're exposing to the face I'm

something on the neck if I want to just

a little bit darker and then you lock it

on for those on iphone you can click and

hold I think iphone 6 and 7 and then

you'll get the option to lock your

exposure so make sure you lock your

exposure. How am I going for time? OK?

Hopefully good okay so I've gone through

those seven tips now I'm going to talk

about one device that will totally

transform your smartphone videos. There's

a saying in the industry and it's

absolutely true, audio is seventy percent

of your video not 50 not 60 but 70 now

we've all experienced watching really

good-looking videos on the internet with

really poor audio most people will put

up with it for 5 10 seconds unless that

message is so vital to you that you want

to keep listening to it you'll just go

somewhere else especially these days

with so many choices what does it feel

like when you get a call on the phone

and its really scratchy it's really hard

to hear. Do people- do you get annoyed with

that? Is it just me? I get really annoyed

with that and the same with video however,

if the video quality isn't that good

but the audio quality is really clear

then people will still watch it. Okay?

They can hear the message obviously it

has to be engaging as well so this mic

here that i'm showing you. Got the little

packet somewhere. Okay, this is- this is a

lavalier or lapel or lav mic and this

particular one is road which is an

australian brand i particularly like it

you can plug it directly into your phone

this one

right now on facebook and this is

actually an extension you can get as

well if need be. Normally, I don't it need if

I'm presenting to about this this close

to the camera, I don't need it but today

I'm using it just in case. Get an

extension for under one hundred dollars

it makes a massive difference with your

videos this is also another option as

well this is also a road directional mic

that you can plug directly into your

phone however on mine, mine's a bit a

little bit unusual because the input and

the cameras are really closer you

actually see the microphone sticking out

but on most phones you don't so if you

want a directional mic the difference

between the two the lapel mic and I'm

wearing- I actually got two, one from

the video crew and my own is

omnidirectional so it picks up about

five to six inches around you so it's

really good to you know have a nice

clear sound and not too much background

sound whereas the directional mic it

picks up sound wherever you pointing it to

so if you're sort of run and gun thing

where you're filming someone,

interviewing someone else this might be

a better option I always prefer the

lapel in my situations. So, that- if you're

serious about video buy one of these it

makes a huge difference any if you for

any reason you you don't want to or you

can't, then, just make sure you find its

really close to you because even with

the DSLRs which are really professional

cameras that- you know- the reason below

cost they use those in movies and shows

like house of film with with the canon 5d

DSLR but the microphones are terrible in

the industry just about always record

the sound separately okay on different

recorders. I know we've got one here

and then we sync it up later but you

don't really want to do that with the

smartphone in fact before I used to go

and try and record videos and

professional setup can take hours

sometimes by the time I set everything up

i'm just doing myself and like so

exhausted I can't do this video anymore

now I've just got a room at home or

elsewhere and I've just got everything

set up put put the phone on frame the

shot plug in the mic and away I go so

easy so quick or if you're out and about

like I said the best camera you have is

the one that

you have on you and we all have it with

us so to finish off i'm just going to

show you or talk about three ways to

maximize the effectiveness of your smart

phone video so once you've got out there

you've recorded some videos how can you

maximize that now everyone in this room

would know that it's good practice

anyway to have captions on your video

okay but I found out quite a good

workflow is if i upload my video to

youtube and then there it does captions

automatically you go through and you

just tweak it and you correct it you

save it and then you can actually export

down as an SRT file which is the file

that you use to upload and then you can

upload to Facebook now if you're using

facebook. Facebook group to your students

or Facebook pages or you want to promote

something absolutely necessary to have

captions on there because people look at

their Facebook feed and look at videos

it implies without sound now so if you

haven't got the captions there. They don't

know what you're talking about you won't

you won't get them in, and so if it's

interesting they may click on it but

seventy percent of people view videos on

facebook without any sound at all next

thing you can do is you think's tracked

the audio now podcasting is really big

and it's been around for a while but

apparently it's growing and it's just

going to keep growing podcasting people

you know they're out for a run or theyr'e on

the train they want to listen to experts

they want to listen different

interest podcasting is really big so

there's lots of different apps on your

phone and programs I'm not going to go

into that now that you can extract the

audio then you can use it as a podcast I

put on soundcloud iTunes a whole lot of

different places okay and which of

course makes it more accessible for

visually impaired students and third

thirdly you can use the transcript that

you have tweaked that add to it and put

up a blog post you know the most

important thing with your websites these

days with SEO is to have blog pieces in

there to be the content expert doesn't

matter about keywords and all that

anymore that just doesn't make much

difference at all it's being an expert

in your area

so blog posts are the best thing you can

possibly do for SEO okay so they're the

three tips and okay so who feels ready

to to go and get out there and film okay

few of you fantastic because you know

what that's the key just get out there

and do it practice and each time you do

it you'll get better at it okay so as a

Bonus today I'm going to- you can jump

onto my website and you can download the

note. They're the notes that I've been

talking about today seven common

mistakes so you can grab those there and

also the second bonus for my

up-and-coming course. I actually filmed a

workshop on creating professional

looking videos with your smartphone and

I'm putting that together as an online

course and i'll be doing other workshops

as well and in different cities as well

so if you want to grab a seventy percent

discount just for attendees then you can

jump onto my website as well there

should be a flyer in your in your bag as

well about this okay so I was asked

before I was interviewed before so why

use smartphones and when should you use

professional videos but the beauty of

smartphones is you know you can create

quick and easy videos let's say we have

a classroom of 30 students you're not

going to bring a professional video crew

in to film that it's not cost-effective

however if you're going to be showing a

video to hundreds or even thousands of

students then that's when you step up

and you bring in a professional crew or

if you're going to have a video that's

representing your organization that's

when you use a professional crew as well

at intro outro we also do virtual

reality videos and what we're doing now

with we're doing a whole lot of training

videos at the moment where we're setting

up first aid forklift and a few other

areas where training organization's

can just go in and say okay our students

want to do this it's all set up for them

they download the app there it is they

can do the training and save a lot of

time particularly in areas where you

know safety is an issue or they need to

get experience first

ok so that is my presentation hope you

enjoyed it and I enjoyed being part of

the conference today. Thank you everyone.
