Hey you lot, hope you've all had a great week.
Today's video is a little something I recorded a little while ago, still part of my Mexico
travel journal which you might be pleased to hear I am close to finishing so I can't
wait to share that and the whole of the journey with you all.
But I recorded this, honestly because my camera was already set up from recording something
else, I didn't really plan on using it, but when I posted a picture of this piece
on instagram a few people asked if I had a video on painting in this sort of minimal,
basic style.
And since I've not been about much this week, which I'll talk about in a second,
I didn't have a lot of time to record something that I thought would be good enough quality
to put up here on my channel.
Which made this the perfect little clip to go to.
So I decided to keep it in real-time just so you can see..
I think the thing with time lapses is that they make everything look easy and natural
and, its easy to make that assumption especially when you see a painting as loose as this one.
So I wanted to keep this at normal speed just so you can see that my mark making is still
quite careful and considered, despite it looking like I just kind of whipped this together
in a few seconds.
Now I'm really happy with how this turned out, obviously I've been working on improving
this simplified style, mainly in landscapes, and I was surprised with how I managed to
achieve just the look I've been struggling to get, and how it just kind of happened by
accident.
I can't say that I've got it all figured out yet, I do have to admit this kind of happened
by chance, so I can't say to you, 'this is how you do it…'
What I do think helped me with this one was keeping my colours very restricted.
So I went in with this approach of just blocking in all the things that were a certain colour
first, so I started with the skin, I was looking at a picture for this by the way, a picture
I took while I was on holiday, and I just focused on the areas that were bare skin,
and looked at them just as flat shapes that I could lay down on a page and kind of connect
like floating puzzle pieces.
I don't know if that makes a lot of sense.
It's almost like, if you've ever done a paint by numbers, and if you don't know
what I mean, please google it and it might make more sense.
I turned the photo I was using for reference into a paint-by-numbers in my head and I put
down each area onto my paper one at a time.
I did the same thing when I laid in a layer of shading on the skin and then again for
the clothes and the hair.
And that approach made things so much easier, carving things out one area at a time, and
I think that's what got me the results I wanted.
One thing I do struggle with is remembering that that's the approach I'm taking, and
I think that comes up more when I'm doing more complicated landscapes, I get caught
up in a certain area, forget that I'm doing one colour at a time…
So I hope that's made a bit of sense anyway.
Maybe it makes more sense just to watch it and see what I'm doing.
I hope you like this real-time version of things, I don't do this here often, more
on Patreon, but doing it over there has taught me how much people appreciate it and what
they can get out of it so I hope it's made a little difference.
Other than that, how are you guys?
Long time no chat!
As I said at the beginning, I've not been around much.
I was at a music festival over the weekend.
And omg, first of all, I had the most amazing time, so lovely to get away and just be out
in the sun, listening to great music and spending some good quality time with friends, I did
a little bit of filming so hopefully I'll be able to show you some when I get the chance
to edit it.
But the best part has got to be that I actually ended up meeting one of you guys!
It was just incredible, its the first time I've met one of you in person and I feel
so bad cos I didn't even get your name, I hope you're watching, I was just so like
taken aback and overwhelmed with the moment and how lovely you were.
Yeah it was just out of this world, the most amazing experience and I can't really get
over it.
So I had a fab time, got home on Tuesday and I've been trying to finally settle back
into normal life.
I'm gonna get back to a normal work schedule, finish this travel journal and start on some
really cool fun new projects for my art and for this channel so I'm really looking forward
to it.
I think it might be August before I'm fully caught up and back into a proper rhythm of
things but in the mean time I'm still aiming to at least keep up with a video going out
a week.
It may just be more casual sketchbook stuff like this, which I know most of you don't
mind.
But yeah, I've said all the things I needed to say, I hope you've enjoyed this video
and have had a lovely week.
I'll see you all in the next one!
Bye!
