It's often said that the good pass young.
But although their lives were tragically cut short, these stars made an enormous impact.
From Kurt Cobain, to Amy Winehouse and Heath Ledger, all of these stars tragically passed
away before they turned 30.
Lee Thompson Young
If you were raised in the '90s, you knew Lee Thompson Young.
He broke out as the star of Disney's The Famous Jett Jackson.
He then kept a low career profile, before landing on TNT's Rizzoli & Isles, in 2010.
But by 2014, something had changed for the young star.
According to USA Today, the 29-year-old was found in his Los Angeles apartment in
mid-August after failing to appear on set for filming.
He had taken his own life.
The New York Daily News would later uncover that Young suffered from both bipolar disorder
and depression.
When news broke of his passing, TNT network stated,
"We are beyond heartbroken."
"Lee will be cherished and remembered by all who knew and loved him… for his positive
energy, infectious smile and soulful grace."
Kurt Cobain
In 1994, Kurt Cobain was a grunge rock legend with the legions of fans and fame to prove
it.
But despite his success, Cobain was deeply depressed, and using substances.
According to a People story covering Cobain's last days, he was in a very dark place.
After much concern and intervention on the part of his loved ones, Cobain checked into
rehab in California on April 1st, 1994.
But it wasn't enough.
After two days of treatment, he checked himself out and returned home to Seattle.
On April 5th, Cobain took his own life.
He was just 27.
Cobain left behind a note, with a message to his wife, "Please keep going Courtney for
Francis.
For her life will be so much happier without me.
I love you.
I love you."
Amy Winehouse
One of Britain's great rising talents, Amy Winehouse had two albums and several Grammys
under her belt.
But it would be an addiction which would take her life in July 2011, when she
was 27.
According to The Daily Mail, Winehouse would succumb to alcohol poisoning, causing her
to stop breathing and fall into a coma.
Andrew Morris, her security guard who lived with her, said she seemed her usual "bubbly
self" the night before her passing.
He discovered her body the following day.
River Phoenix
By his early twenties, River Phoenix was one of Hollywood's most promising actors.
But a deadly mix of substances ended his career before it ever truly began.
Phoenix's final days were recounted in the book Running with Monsters, by his friend
(and celebrity rehab therapist), Bob Forrest.
In the New York Post, Forrest said Phoenix had been publicly living as a "hippie vegan
pacifist", but had privately turned to substances.
The combination finally caught up with Phoenix on October 31, 1993
at the Viper Room in L.A. According to Forrest, Phoenix looked extremely pale that evening
and even confessed to thinking he was "OD'ing."
Not long after, Phoenix was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital where he passed away, at the age of 23.
Heath Ledger
Dark Knight and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger was one of Hollywood's most respected
young actors at the time of his sudden loss in January 2008, when he was just 28.
According to Us Weekly, Ledger passed of an "acute intoxication," due to the various prescriptions found in his system, per toxicology reports.
In the months before his loss, he described his restless state to The New York Times,
after completing Dark Knight and the Bob Dylan bio-pic I'm Not There, saying, "I couldn't
stop thinking.
My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."
Aaliyah
At the time of her tragic loss on August 25, 2001, at the age of 22, Aaliyah was one
of music's biggest stars.
Despite her youth, she had released a total of three albums and starred in several films.
Tragically, a small plane from the Bahamas carrying the singer crashed shortly after
take off.
Various reports state that there may have been issues with the weight of the equipment
onboard.
There was also trouble with starting one of the engines, preflight, which may have resulted
in engine failure.
Aaliyah reportedly passed instantly.
Selena
Mexico's leading lady in the early '90s, Selena had amassed a legion of fans all over Central
and North America.
But her life would end tragically, when a former family employee — and president of
her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar — shot her at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, in March
1995.
Selena was 23.
Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, explained that Saldivar had been fired from her job
at the family's clothing store over missing money three weeks before the shooting.
Selena asked for the money back and the two women arranged to meet up.
After attacking Selena, Saldivar commanded a 10-hour stand-off while she held a gun to
her own head.
In March 2017, Selena's sister Suzette told ET:
"Early on when she passed away, people told me that time heals your heart and I couldn't
understand that."
"It's more that time helps you deal with what's been put in front of you."
Tupac
Rap star Tupac was quickly building a mega-music empire before his passing on September 13, 1996.
After four bullets struck him in the chest during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on
September 7, he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later passed away.
Tupac was 25.
For years, the rapper's passing has plagued fans and the media.
No suspects were charged in the shooting, and the exact details have largely remained
a mystery.
Biggie Smalls
On March 10, 1997, 24-year-old Brooklyn rapper Biggie Smalls became the victim of a drive-by
shooting in Los Angeles.
Years earlier in an interview, he confessed to being fearful his life would be taken at
any moment, saying, "I'm scared."
Twenty years later, Biggie's mother, Voletta Wallace, told The Daily Mail, "I have a very
good idea who attacked Christopher and I genuinely believe that the LAPD knows exactly who did
too…
It seems to me that it's one giant conspiracy."
Janis Joplin
On October 4th, 1970, Rock goddess Janis Joplin passed at age 27 from a drug overdose in Hollywood.
Her road manager, John Cooke, discovered her body after she failed to show up for work.
Friends say she was upbeat in the weeks before her passing.
Her attorney Robert Gorden said,
"She seemed very happy.
She told me she was thinking of getting married."
"She was also very happy about her album."
The legendary singer's ashes were scattered off the coast of Marin County, in San Francisco.
Jimi Hendrix
Guitar and rock legend Jimi Hendrix passed away on September 18, 1970 in England after a drug
overdose.
He was only 27 years old.
According to Rolling Stone, he left behind a suicide note, written in the form of a poem,
for his then-girlfriend.
Hendrix's friend Eric Burdon said, "The poem just says the things Hendrix has always been
saying, but to which nobody ever listened.
It was a note of goodbye and a note of hello.
I don't think Jimi committed suicide in the conventional way.
He just decided to exit when he wanted to."
The musician once described what would happen after his passing, once saying, "I tell you
when I pass I'm going to have a funeral.
I'm going to have a jam session.
And, knowing me, I'll probably get busted at my own funeral."
