hello friends my name is Arith Härger and today I'm going to talk about Sunna
the Nordic goddess of the Sun now I know some of you are here to watch videos
with a more academical background and supported by sciences but speaking as an
archaeologist when we come across certain artifacts related to religion
and spiritual context we really have to understand why and how our ancestors
worshipped the gods what was the true purpose we have to try to enter in our
ancestors' minds as best as we can to understand these things to understand
what's in front of us when we exhume artifacts related to spirituality and
religion so that's why I am here in this channel also talking about the gods so
let's do this
Sunna or Sól is the Nordic goddess of the Sun she rides
across the sky on a chariot pulled by two golden horses - "Alsvinn" (very fast)
and "Arvaker" (early rising, Sunna is the very symbol of the Sun and its power
and as you might've guessed our gifts to us are exactly the same emotions and
feelings the Sun give us such as energy motivation enthusiasm happiness warmth
joy and so on I know that there are people who don't like the Sun or its
light but I'm also talking about the emotions and feelings the Sun gives to
the land itself the Sun gives power energy vitamins health it helps in the
creation of life and in the growth of all living things
so disrespecting the land the natural environment and the world itself is
disrespecting life and that is something this goddess will disapprove
so, obviously as I have said before the powers of this goddess are related with
the power of growth of all living things especially plans
this goddess belongs to a group of northern sky gods and just take in mind
for instance our daily actions towards the natural environment and our
pollution we make that might harm the ozone layer which unfortunately is still
a problem very present is a great disrespect towards this goddess not just
this goddess but to the other sky gods not just from the Norse Pantheon but
also to the other gods the other sky gods of the other pagan pantheons
Sunna is the very light that warms the hearts of those in need so she can be called upon
to give you energy motivation and enthusiasm and all the feelings those
motivations give such as happiness and joy so she is the light in the hearts of
those who lie in the shadows and in the cold emotional depression so she can be
called upon by those who are trapped in such melancholic conditions and in
sadness now imagine the importance this goddess had to our Assessors to those
people who worked in the fields harvesting their crops to the people so
attached to the land the Sun and sunny days gave life to both animals and
plants which give assistance to mankind now imagine the northern parts of Europe
where most of the year it's winter it's cold and snowing and only a few months
of Sun and the warmth of the Sun and bright days so this was something to
praise something to worship, it was something that was really important to
our ancestors - the Sun - and the gods related with the sky and the energy and the
power of the Sun for instance we have that mythological
account - Norse mythological account - about the giant who comes to Ásgard
to build that Great Wall and he tells the gods that he will build that wall
wall in just three seasons it just needs one winter one summer and another winter
obviously our ancestors . . . had their yearly festivities all the equinoxes and all
the solstices they celebrated during spring and autumn and such but for the
northern peoples of Europe when it came to to work in the fields
and such and all life around them it was really just these two seasons winter and
summer a very long winter and a very short summer so the Sun and brighter
days was really really important to our ancestors from at least northern Europe
even if you don't like the Sun and it's brightness and it's heat just like
myself I can't go out there without getting my ghostly-pale skin completely
burnt completely red and the brightness of the Sun really hurts my eyes
but we have to take in mind that the harsh conditions in which our ancestors
lived during winter so the coming of the Sun really gave them the vitality the
power and the energy of the Sun really empowered them thus creating better and
healthier communities now I have said this before in other videos
it is the curiosity and maybe if you think about it it's not a curiosity at all
but the term the English term for the Sun well it's Sun and it comes from
the goddess Sunna and other Nordic countries Scandinavian countries such as
Norway and Sweden the name for the Sun is Sol and so his in the southern
countries of Europe such as Portugal and Spain where the name of the Sun is also
Sol, so as you can see, as we can all see
the Sun once was really important to our ancestors from all over Europe and of
course outside Europe in other continents and I've also said this
before that the Sun is female in in northern Europe and in southern Europe
the Sun is male but this only happened with the romanization of the southern
countries and after that the Christianization of the countries and as
I've told you in Portugal and Spain the Sun is still called Sol and before the
romanization of this these countries of the peoples of these countries people
actually worshipped a Sun Goddess during the Chalcolithic, the Neolithic had
ended and people stopped worshipping fertility gods and gods of the land and
started to worship a unique sun goddess because she gave them all the energy and
all the fertility they needed in the land and in their lives
now how to honor this goddess, well it's curious if people knew the sacrifices and risks of
spirituality the true sacrifices I'm afraid there will be a lot more
atheists in the world but if we want to make things simple if you want the gods
to help you, you also must help the gods and the first thing we learn in the
northern European pagan traditions is that a gift calls for a gift so the gifts
of this goddess to us it's not only brightness and energy but all the good
emotions and feelings these energy awakens such as motivation and
enthusiasm health and vitality so she is the perfect Goddess you can call upon you
can worship for instance if you are in a very deep emotional depression
and unfortunately I have experienced depression and it really is a very dark
room with no windows no doors no holes you can use to escape and this goddess
really is the light in darkness she can help you to give brightness in your in
your head in your mind in your thoughts and warmth in your heart if you are the
type of person who needs an altar to worship certain deities in the case of
Sunna or Sól, the Nordic goddess of the Sun, you will want to include in your
altar certain objects which symbolize the Sun somehow and of course
you will want to decorate your altar with gold red oranges and green colors
you will also want to include in your altar flowers, plants, tend to them care
for them, keep them alive to show the respect you have for delicate living
beings that depend so much in the energy of the Sun to live but they just don't
depend on the Sun they also depend in your love your patience your protection
so you are creating a task, an useful objective in your life to help you to
keep your mind off of things that might harm you it's a great way to honor
this goddess, showing her that you respect the life that she helps to maintain and
that through you life continues with your patience with your dedication
the runes are also a great way to communicate with the gods and somehow be
connected with them and in the case of this goddess -Sunna - the best runes you can
use are of course Dagaz and Sowulo
if you are the type of person who likes to give
offerings to the gods in the case of this goddess you would like to gift her to
give offerings of fruits and drinks made out of fruits
never forget that this
goddess was very important to our ancestors as well as all the other gods
associated with the Sun the pagan holidays revolve around the
yearly cycle of the Sun and the control the Sun has of the earthly seasons
