Hey guys it's Trina and it's time for another audiobook wrap up. I do these
videos for every five audiobooks that I finish and just as a quick reminder
I'm only going to be reviewing the narration style and how I liked it and
how it added or took away from my enjoyment of the book overall. I do
review the things like the writing, the story, the characters in my monthly
reading wrap-up so if you want to know more about a book or what I thought of
it overall you can definitely check out my wrap-ups. Anywhere else that I've
talked about any of these books today I will have that linked in the description
below and there are timestamps below if you want to jump straight to one of
these audiobook reviews because you just want to hear my thoughts on that one
over the rest of them. So first of all I realized last time that I reviewed a
couple of audio books that I had DNFed and I totally forgot about another one
that I have DNFed so I'm going to be talking about it now and that was Never
Fade by Alexandra Bracken. This is the second book in The Darkest Minds trilogy
and I listened to several hours - it was about like a hundred and fifty
something pages worth in the print book that I had listened to - and it was
narrated by Amy McFadden and I think she did fine. I don't think that me
DNFing the book had anything to do with her narration. I don't have many thoughts
on her narration though. It was kind of typical, kind of standard, but I DNFed
this book because the story in this book is not suited to audio in my
opinion. I've read like almost 60 books this year and 50%, half, of what I have read
this year has been on audio so I'm very familiar with the audio format. I am very
good at listening to details, picking up those details. I don't usually just miss
big chunks of the thing but when I listened to Never Fade I was missing
everything. I felt completely lost because this book throws you into the
action. You're in a new place with new characters. I had no idea how we had
gotten here. I did not understand what the main character was suddenly wanting,
like what her motivations were now. And I also had realized right before
reading this book that I don't really enjoy Alexandra Bracken's writing. I think
that it's very cluttered, it's very descriptive, and it's not that she's a
bad writer, it's that I personally get distracted
by it and listening to the audio version of one of her books was just not a good
combination for me and my brain and like what I need. So I felt completely lost
and that's over 150 pages into a book and it's like a 600 page book and I just
kind of went... Nah. Not going to do it for another 500 pages. So I DNFed it. Those
are my thoughts on it. Narration, fine. But I didn't enjoy the book in general,
you know? Next up I listened to Windfall by Jennifer E Smith. This is a YA
contemporary novel about two best friends, one has the crush on the other
one, she buys him a lottery ticket for his birthday,
and lo and behold he wins the jackpot and now these two teenagers are trying
to figure out what to do with all this money. The audiobook of this was narrated
by Tonya Cornelisse and I had several thoughts on her narration. She read very
slowly. Compared to all the other audiobooks that I have listened to this
year I had to up my listening speed because I felt she was just reading it
extra slow. I also thought she did terrible terrible male voices. Every
single male character in this book sounded like Barney Rubble from that old
Flintstones cartoon. Just, eh, they just all kind of sounded dim-witted
and that's not the impression I got of some of these characters. Additionally, I
couldn't tell a lot of the male characters apart when they would both be
speaking in one scene. Another thing that I did not like about her narration was
she paused in odd locations. I remember there was this one line that said: "he had
blue eyes and hair [pause] that curled around his temples." Like why did you pause there?
Because I literally thought you were saying he had blue eyes and blue hair.
"He had blue eyes and hair [long pause] that curled around his temples." What? Why is the pause?
Why? What is happening? And that was definitely not the only time it happened.
There were several just strange random pauses in the narration that made me
think, what? Was that the end of a sentence? There was a lot that I disliked about
her narration of this audiobook, however she nailed the main character Alice. I
loved her narration of Alice. So her narration was not all terible
and honestly I did enjoy listening to this story versus reading it myself
because I've read several of Jennifer E Smith's books and I've read all of those in
print format so I did enjoy the audio experience. This just isn't my favorite narrator.
Then I listened to The Burning World by Isaac Marion, which is the
sequel to Warm Bodies. This is a zombie apocalypse story and the first book
followed the point of view of a zombie and it's basically a zombie romance. This
second book totally took the story in more of a traditional zombie apocalypse
story and to me I was a little bit bored by it because that's not what I liked
about that first book, which was so unique. You know, it was different than
every other zombie story. But I digress. I've talked about it in a wrap-up before.
This one was narrated by Jacques Roy. His voice is exactly how I pictured the
main character. I read the first book in print format, I watched the movie
adaptation of it, his voice was like perfectly in line with my head canon of
how this character should have sounded. He embodied this character very very
well. Personally, I don't really think that the way the book is formatted
really suits audio. There are two points of views. We have a point of view from
one main character who's in first person and his point of view will give us
flashbacks from his life as well as memories from another character whose
mind he is able to access. So you've got his point of view and then two different
types of flashbacks. Then you have a second point of view that is thrown in
which I guess is like the collective zombie point of view because everything
is like, "We watch. We wait. The world is burning and we're waiting to rise," and
stuff like that, so it's like this weird collective type of point of view. The
transitions from narration to flashback, or from character to the collective
point of view happen so quickly that while listening I wasn't always aware of
what part of the narrative that I was in so I was getting confused. However, I
enjoyed listening to it because I do think that's the only way that I got
through this entire book because like I said I was a little bit bored with the
typical zombie apocalypse story. So I did appreciate having the audio available to me.
If you're thinking about reading this book but you aren't sure if you're
really interested in a sequel to Warm Bodies, audio might be the way to go for
you, but you know, I do think on audio this story might be a little bit more
confusing than if you just read it in print if you have that option. Next I
listened to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling. I got the
US edition, which is narrated by Jim Dale. That was the only edition that my
library had available. I know that the UK version is also very very beloved so I'm
not trying to say one is better than the other, but this is the one that I listened
to. This was my first time listening to any of the Harry Potter books on audio
and I loved it! It was so amazing! I just loved getting to experience this
very familiar world and story in a brand new format - new to me format. I thought his
voicing was fine with everything. I had no issues with it at all. I just
thoroughly thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the voices are different than
what I had imagined for myself but that doesn't mean he's an unskilled narrator.
Honestly guys, if you haven't listened to any of the Harry Potter audiobooks and
you can, definitely check them out. It was just very very delightful. I loved it so
much. I don't have much else to say because I loved it. You know, what else
do you need to know, it's Harry Potter. I loved it. [laughs]
And the last audiobook I'm reviewing in this wrap up is Ramona Blue by
Julie Murphy. This is a YA contemporary summer romance about a girl who just
broke up with her girlfriend and her childhood best friend moves back to town
and she realizes she might start having feelings for him, which is a surprise to
her because she always thought that she was a lesbian, only attracted to girls,
and now she's learning that her sexuality it's a bit more fluid than
that. She still likes girls, which is always acknowledged throughout the book,
but now she thinks she might possibly be bisexual because she's exploring a
relationship with this guy. This audiobook was narrated by Therese
Plummer and [sigh] she did such a great job. I love the book itself - the story, the
writing, the characters - and I absolutely adored the narration as well. I thought
she just did great with it. I really felt like she brought the story and the
characters to life, she brought the emotion when it needed to be brought, and
this is set in a small southern town and so she reads the main characters with a
very subtle southern accent. She did a great job and
it really added to my overall enjoyment of this book and this story itself so I
really loved the audiobook of this. I would highly recommend it but I think
the story itself is wonderful no matter which format that you choose to pick it
up in. So that is it for this time. Those are the last five audiobooks that I have
completed. Out of these 5, my favorite absolutely was Harry Potter but I feel
like that's a given so I really want to encourage you guys
to read Ramona Blue if you're at all interested in this story. It was just
a fantastic story and fantastic in the audio format. I would love to know if you
guys have read any audio books lately that you love or you think that I would
really enjoy. Please leave those recommendations in the comments below.
Thank you so much for watching and I will see you in the comments. Bye!
