Team Starkid's A Very Potter Musical is honestly one of the most iconic interpretations of
the famous Boy Who Lived aka Harry Potter.
And since it is the famous Boy Who Lived's birth month, I thought we would go back and
revisit the infamous 2009 musical and basically tear it apart because A Very Potter Musical
is utter trash.
First off, let's take a look at that opening scene right here right now.
Let's take a look.
3, 2, 1 OOH!
Do you see that?!
Do you see that right there!
Darren Criss sitting on his suitcase in the middle of an empty stage when the light comes
on-OH it's so iconic.
Like I don't get it.
This musical was created by a bunch of college students that were probably high with a budget
of $150 that they spent most of that $150 on one giant chocolate bar!
And yet they're still able to create this super iconic opening with the gorgeous lighting
with the stinger and the Darren Criss acting Darren Criss/Harry Potter like and GRRRR!
It's so iconic, it's so ingenius, there's no better way to open a musical.
Okay this is the best way to open a musical and Starkid did it.
Everyone quit now while you're ahead.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, put your screenplay down.
I don't care what you're working on.
But I can tell you what can beat that opening scene, okay?!
The very first opening song!
This opening song is literally so good that it's still one of the most iconic Starkid
songs ever and this is like their very first song they ever presented to us in the public
form.
The very first song is their best song and it's...what?!
How do you start a musical like that?!
These are college students!
And they're doing this fantastic work right off the bat, right out of the gate...whatever
else you wanna say.
Like this genius opening scene automatically thrusts you into this magical world and you're
automatically part of the world!
You don't have to go through some three first chapters where you're with the Dursleys and
oh there's a snake coming out-NO!
No.
You're just automatically with the magic.
You are in the Harry Potter world!
And it's magical!
Everything about this first opening scene is magical and I don't know how Starkid did
it, but it's the best opening scene of all time.
Now ignoring that iconic, beautiful, artistic opening scene, let's look at the cast of this
musical okay?
So we can see just how problematic all of this is.
Because first off, we have Harry Potter being played by THE Darren Criss.
That's right, THE Darren Criss which has played multiple roles on television, mostly Ryan
Murphy productions, had some Broadway moments, and this was our very first introduction to
him.
This beautiful, beautiful man who can do no wrong.
He is the best Harry Potter anyone could be, Daniel Radcliffe probably included.
And he portrays it so naturally because he probably forgot most of his lines so he just
kind of said he'd think what Harry Potter would say in that moment and since Darren
Criss is a huge Harry Potter fan, he was able to do it super naturally and super in character
and it's genius.
And then we have the brunette, equally gorgeous Joey Richter playing Ron in a red wig.
And the reason why he's wearing a headband throughout the musical is because the role
of Ron is supposed to be ginger, that's like one of Ron's main personality traits and the
wig didn't fit.
The wig, that's how cheap this production was, was that they would spend most of their
money on a candy bar but not on a decent sized wig for Richter, even though I know it was
Richter's fault because Richter shaved his head before the show.
Why would he shave his head before the show?!
Jaime Lyn Beatty played Ginny which is such [incomprehensible].
It's no secret that the movies completely botched Ginny's character and Jaime Lyn went
in and snatched it up and fixed it and made it super, super, super, super, super good!!!
Her singing voice, oh!
Her singing voice!
That Harry ballad.
*Jaime Lyn Beatty as Ginny Weasley singing "Harry" from A Very Potter Musical*
It still breaks my heart even just thinking about it.
Gorgeous job, Jaime.
Wonderful job!
The wig fit you.
So good job for not shaving your head right before the performance @ Richter.
But of course, I gotta talk about the person that stole the show.
I am talking, of course, about Lauren Lopez as Draco Malfoy.
Lauren Lopez as Draco Malfoy: I can't go to Pigfarts.
It's on Mars!
You NEED a rocketship.
Listen I don't want to say this is the most accurate portrayal of Draco Malfoy, but I
do want to say it's probably my favorite.
She's rolling on the ground, she has this super ridiculous posh accent, Tom Felton knows
about her and I think he approves and she just gives a whole new light to the character
that we would have never interpreted before.
Like who would have thought Draco Malfoy could be comedic relief.
I'm sure most of the Harry Potter fandom, but Starkid was actually the one who took
that idea and made it into reality with this beautiful trash work of art musical.
And I guess that's like my whole thing with why this whole musical is just utter trash
is because it's not a professional production, but I still enjoy it way better and way more
immensely than probably most of the Harry Potter movies.
Definitely Harry Potter 3.
I did not like Harry Potter 3, tbh.
HE WAS THEIR FRIEND!
But basically, this whole musical, this 3 hour musical, is an ode to Harry Potter.
It is an ode to the Harry Potter fandom.
You get vastly improved character arcs, you get excellent in-depth dives into fandom ships
such as Draco and Hermione or Ron and Hermione, flaws and errors that occur in the series
are tastefully pointed out and then tastefully mocked.
Rightfully so, in some to most cases.
Cedric Diggory: Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders!
Dumbledore: What the hell is a Hufflepuff?
And A Very Potter Musical overall is just a very good experience.
And the whole thing is just trash, as I said earlier.
Because why can a group of probably high college students make a better interpretation of a
classic book series than 8 movies with over a billion dollar budget.
It blows my mind!
And again, it just comes down to the passion of it all.
The fact that these people, these kids, were just fans and they just grew up with the series
and they wanted an honest interpretation of what the series in their heads looked like.
And that translated into our reality, like the fans of Harry Potter's reality.
If you love the magical world of Harry Potter and you love it and the fun side, not just
the serious, angsty, Harry's being possessed by Voldemort side of it, uh, he was their
friend.
HE WAS THEIR FRIEND!
If you like just the magical world of Harry Potter and you love just the richness of the
friendship and the richness of the relationships and the richness of the characters, you will
love A Very Potter Musical.

But you need a rocket to get to Pigfarts!
Oh I don't have a floor to roll on.
Mm.
Oh this scene's ruined.
*end theme* Thank you for watching my video!
