TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE 2017 WHEN, WHERE AND HOW TO SEE IT (SAFELY)

By SPACE.com

On Aug. 21, 2017, people across the United States will see the sun disappear behind the

moon, turning daylight into twilight, causing the temperature drop rapidly and revealing

massive streamers of light streaking through the sky around the silhouette of the moon.

On that day, America will fall under the path of a total solar eclipse .

The so-called Great American Total Solar Eclipse will darken skies all the way from Oregon

to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles (113 kilometers) wide.

People who descend upon this path of totality for the big event are in for an unforgettable

experience.

Here is Space.coms complete guide to the 2017 total solar eclipse.

It includes information about where and when to see it, how long it lasts, what you can

expect to see, and how to plan ahead to ensure you get the most out of this incredible experience.

Update 7/19: Dont forget to check out all our most recent articles about the total solar

eclipse, including tips on where and how to see it.About why sunglasses wont cut it

when youre viewing a solar eclipse, plus a video about how to make your own solar eclipse

viewer.

REMEMBER: Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon,

can cause serious eye damage or blindness.

NEVER look at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection . See our complete guide

to find out how to view the eclipse safely.

WHAT IS A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the disk of the moon appears to completely cover the

disk of the sun in the sky.

The fact that total solar eclipses occur at all is a quirk of cosmic geometry.

The moon orbits an average of 239,000 miles (385,000 kilometers) from Earth just the

right distance to seem the same size in the sky as the much-larger sun.

However, these heavenly bodies line up only about once every 18 months.

Outside the path of totality, skywatchers in the continental U.S. and other nearby areas

will see a partial solar eclipse, in which the moon appears to take a bite out of the

suns disk.

Two to five solar eclipses occur each year on average, but total solar eclipses happen

just once every 18 months or so.

WHAT WILL I SEE DURING A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?

During a total solar eclipse, the disk of the moon blocks out the last sliver of light

from the sun, and the suns outer atmosphere, the corona, becomes visible.

The corona is far from an indistinct haze; skywatchers report seeing great jets and ribbons

of light, twisting and curling out into the sky.

It brings people to tears, Rick Fienberg, a spokesperson for the American Astronomical

Society (AAS), told Space.com of the experience.

It makes peoples jaw drop.

During totality, the area inside the moons shadow is cloaked in twilight a very strange

feeling to experience in the middle of the day.

Just before and just after totality, observers can see this cloak of darkness moving toward

them across the landscape, and then moving away.

These effects are not visible during a partial solar eclipse, so skywatchers are encouraged

to see if they are inside the path of totality during the total eclipse.

FROM WHAT LOCATIONS WILL THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE BE VISIBLE?

The path of totality for the Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse is about 70 miles wide

and stretches from Oregon to South Carolina.

It passes through Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee,

Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

You can use this interactive map from NASA to zoom in on the path and find out the exact

locations from which it will be visible.

You can also check out our state-by-state guide to find out which major cities and prime

locations will fall inside the path of totality.

You may also want to attend one of the many eclipse parties and organized events taking

place around the path of totality.

WHEN WILL THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE OCCUR, AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

The timing of the total solar eclipse and its duration both depend on where you are

inside the path of totality.

At most, the moon will completely cover the disk of the sun for 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Thats about how long totality will last for observers positioned anywhere along the

center of the path of totality.

As you move toward the edge of the path, the duration of totality will decrease.

People standing at the very edge of the path may observe totality for only a few seconds.

The chart below lists the moment of mid-totality and the duration of totality for a handful

of cities that lie close to the center of the path.

west to east, totality will occur later in the day the farther east you travel.

Use the NASA interactive eclipse map to find out exactly when totality will occur and how

long it will last in the location where you plan to observe the eclipse.

Just click on a spot on the map, and an informational box will appear with specific times.

DO I NEED ANY EQUIPMENT TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE?

Anyone planning to view the total solar eclipse of 2017 should get a pair of solar viewing

glasses.

These protective shades make it possible for observers to look directly at the sun before

and after totality.

The following four companies sell eclipse glasses that meet the international standard

(ISO 12312-2) recommended by NASA, the AAS and other scientific organizations: Rainbow

Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical and TSE 17.

Sunglasses cannot be used in place of solar viewing glasses.

REMEMBER: Looking directly at the sun, even when it is partially covered by the moon,

can cause serious eye damage or blindness.

NEVER look at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection.

See our complete guide to find out how to view the eclipse safely.

During totality, when the disk of the sun is completely covered by the moon, it is safe

to look up at the celestial sight with the naked eye.

(See our in-depth safety guide for more details about when it is safe to view the eclipse

with unaided eyes.)

Binoculars are helpful for seeing more detail in the solar corona.

Telescopes are not necessary, but some skywatchers may use low-powered telescopes.

Skywatchers outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial solar eclipse.

Solar viewing glasses allow skywatchers to look directly at the moons progress across

the face of the sun.

You can also view the progress of a partial solar eclipse using a pinhole camera.

For more information, see our complete guide for how to view the eclipse safely.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE VIEWING THE ECLIPSE?

Aug. 21, 2017, may be one of the worst traffic days in national history, some NASA representatives

predict.

Although about 12 million people live within the narrow band of totality, approximately

25 million reside within a days drive of it, and the agency has estimated that the

population inside the path of totality may double on the day of the eclipse.

With that in mind, make sure you plan for extra travel time, especially on the day of

the eclipse.

Most hotel rooms inside the path of totality have been booked for months or years, so you

may not be able to stay inside the path the night before.

When selecting a location where you plan to view the eclipse, keep in mind your proximity

to food, water, parking and facilities.

Attending an organized eclipse event is an ideal way to make sure those things are close

by.

Traveling even short distances could be difficult in some areas, and midday in the middle of

August can mean punishing heat in many parts of the country.

WHEN IS THE NEXT TIME A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE WILL BE VISIBLE FROM THE U.S.?

In 2024, a total solar eclipse will darken the skies above Mexico and Texas, up through

the Midwest and northeastern U.S.

He challenged the omnipotence of the gods.

See, because like you, they play judge, jury, and executioner.

But Prometheus took away their power.

I need your help.

My past is coming back to haunt me.

Hello, Oliver.

Welcome back to purgatory.

Oliver, do you copy?

There's an A.R.G.U.S. supply ship on the eastern shore.

That's on the other side of the island.

Slade knows where it is, go now!

Hey.

Hey! Oliver says there's a boat on the eastern shore.

You lot won't make it in time.

I'll take my own chances.

William's younger than you were.

The obsession with milk, rice and vitamins in the Philippines - Duration: 7:09.

The obsession with milk, rice and vitamins in the Philippines

The milk lobby has long been very effective in convincing people that milk is an essential

part of good nutrition.

Nowhere more than in the Philippines.

Filipino parents are utterly convinced that milk (and

vitamin pills) are essential for the health of children, along with excessive rice consumption.

The end result is still a whole lot of child malnutrition

among Filipino children.

Milk products for children in the Philippines Most Filipino mothers will breastfeed, I'm

happy to say.

Yet at some stage the milk products appear, and

kids who are 5, 6 and 7 can still be found lying on the floor sucking out of bottles.

Sometimes 5 or more bottles a day of milk formula.

And the ads on TV will promote the benefits to children of different milk products, often

with exorbitant claims of benefits like increased height and

doing better in school.

Truth in advertising laws are not heavily enforced here, you soon discover.

There are even milk products aimed at the elderly, with ads

showing Lolo finally remembering his wedding anniversary thanks to the brain-revitalising

benefits gained.

And I say "milk products" because you see very little fresh milk here.

It's not really a dairy country.

Dairy cattle do best in temperate climates and not

in the tropics.

So mostly what we're talking about is canned powder with added chemicals.

Yet despite the encouraged consumption of milk products, malnutrition and specific nutrient

deficiencies (anemia, Vitamin A deficiency, Vitamin D deficiency, calcium deficiency,

etc) is rife throughout the country and very notable in

kids.

Diets tend to be high in carbohydrate and fat, whilst

low in protein and vitamins.

Carbohydrate allows bodies enough energy to move about, but it doesn't

build growing bodies like protein and vitamins.

The Australian diet by comparison.

I grew up like a typical suburban Australian through the late 60's and 70's eating the

standard Australian diet.

Meat and three veg dinners.

Bowl of fruit on the table.

Eggs for breakfast.

Vegemite sandwiches for lunch.

And my (Aussie) kids grew up much the same, except with a bit more variety than meat and

three veg.

Still, always meat and veges and carbohydrates in a healthy proportion.

And I ended up with 6' tall sons with no stunting.

And know what?

No milk products!

And no daily vitamins!

Never once had a doctor in Australia say "Give this child milk!" or to prescribe multivitamins.

Never happened, nor did it ever happen with anyone else I knew.

Eldest son Greg had a bottle of milk (ie milk, and not powder) at night up until he

was maybe 2.

Jeremy never drank from a bottle in his life.

And I was the same.

No living memory of ever drinking milk, which means I must have been

very young the last time I had any.

Yet in Australia you don't see stunted kids.

You don't see kids with brown stumps in their mouths where

teeth used to be.

And it has nothing to do with the consumption of milk and vitamins, rest assured.

It has all to do with balanced diets.

The consumption of enough building blocks (protein and vitamins) to

make kids grow normally.

Better alternatives to the Filipino diet The common response you get when you suggest

to Filipinos that their kids should eat better is that

they can't afford it.

And yes, this is often the case.

But I whilst I acknowledge that many people can't

feed their kids on steak and an array of fresh fruit, there are still changes that can be

made to get the balance right.

Protein: Fish is fairly cheap, and it's a fine source of protein.

And legumes like mung

beans (mongo) are 24% protein, and full of iron and calcium!

And they're cheap!

And eggs are a great kid-food.

Low in harmful cholesterol, and loaded with protein.

Nature designed eggs as baby-food.

My kids eat eggs every day, and they are all solid muscle.

Vitamins: Vegetables (gulay) are the best source of vitamins available.

Yet there are many who simply won't eat them, because they think that's

what the poorest of the poor eat.

Bad mistake.

They should be a part of every meal.

And seasonal local vegetables can be bought at the local market economically.

If kids grow up on them, they get used to eating

them.

Carbohydrate: Proportionally no plate should contain more than 1/3 of a carbohydrate source,

be that rice, potatoes, pasta or noodles.

Not 90% rice-mountain with a splash or brown water and a teaspoon of

fatty pork.

Our household rule is 1/3 rice, 1/3 vegetable, 1/3 meat.

And we have a house full of healthy kids.

No stunting.

No rotten teeth.

So it clearly works.

7 Things You Need To Know About Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House communications director - Duration: 5:37.

President Trump has a new White House communications director: Anthony Scaramucci.

The move has prompted a bit of a shakeup, as Press Secretary Sean Spicer has resigned

from his position.

What can people expect out of Scaramucci?

Here are seven things you need to know about him.

1.

Scaramucci is a Wall Street hedge fund manager.

He was Goldman Sachs' vice-president of Private Wealth Management and co-founder of Oscar

Capital Management before founding SkyBridge Capital, the investment firm that now manages

$11.4 billion in assets.

2.

Scaramucci is known for being a media savant.

Per The Atlantic:

Like Trump, Scaramucci's knack was not so much business acumen — SkyBridge was a notably

poorly performing fund — but salesmanship and courting the media.

Nicknamed "the Mooch" by reporters, he hosted a splashy annual conference in Las

Vegas and was a frequent media presence.

It's easy to see why Trump likes him.

3.

Scaramucci has described his politics as being "socially inclusive, fiscally responsible."

Scaramucci told Gawker in 2015 that's how he describes himself because he hates labels.

He did say that he is a loyal Republican voter, with the exception of voting for Barack Obama

in 2008.

While Scaramucci decried the gap in compensation between CEOs and workers in the interview,

he said that school choice was a viable way to reduce compensation, and told people that

they shouldn't victimize themselves over inequality.

"Life is unfair," Scaramucci said.

"So the first thing you gotta do is end the bitterness and the disentitlement syndrome,

where you're like 'I'm behind the eight ball so therefore I can't get out.'"

Scaramucci also said that people should reach out to "mentoring communities" and non-governmental

organizations and avoid drugs.

In 2012, Scaramucci tweeted out support for gun control:

We (the USA) has 5% of the world's population but 50% of the world's guns.

Enough is enough.

It is just common sense it apply more controls

— Anthony Scaramucci, August 6, 2012

4.

Scaramucci was critical of Trump in 2015.

After Trump went after hedge fund managers, Scaramucci declared that Trump has "a big

mouth."

"You're an inherited money dude from Queens County," Scaramucci said on Fox Business.

"Bring it, Donald."

He also called Trump "another hack politician."

5.

However, Scaramucci has become an ardent supporter of Trump.

He served on the Trump campaign's fundraising committee and was on Trump's transition team.

After a potential job as the Trump administration's business liaison fell through, Scaramucci

has been working in the Export-Import Bank.

Scaramucci has been an attack dog against Trump's critics; some examples include: (H/T:

Weekly Standard)

Back in December, Scaramucci defended Trump's waffling on climate change, saying that "there

was overwhelming science that the earth was flat" and that "we get a lot of things

wrong in the scientific community."

In January, he criticized media hysteria over Trump's calling NATO obsolete, saying that

people should stop "setting their hair on fire" and "don't need to run around

like crazy."

In February, he speculated on Twitter that the bombing of a Jewish community center might

be connected to Democrats' "effort to incite violence at Trump rallies."

In April, Scaramucci told CNN's Chris Cuomo that Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner was

"like Alexander Hamilton."

"He's got the trust of the president.

He's very, very thoughtful.

He knows how to bring people in," he said.

"That was Hamilton's great gift at a very young age."

Scaramucci also shares his new boss's distaste for the media.

In June, after he was the subject of a now-retracted CNN story that attempted to link him to the

Russian Direct Investment Fund, Scaramucci said that media organizations everywhere needed

to "tighten up editorial standards."

"Once you start to lose your integrity and your reputation as a news organization, people

start to get tone deaf," he said on Fox & Friends.

6.

Scaramucci's appointment as Trump's business liaison fell through over the sale of his

stake in SkyBridge.

The sale of his stake in January involved firms connected to the Chinese government.

Scaramucci hasn't sold his stake in Skybridge yet; it was supposed to be finalized on June

30, but has faced a number of setbacks.

7.

Spicer, Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon really didn't want Scaramucci to serve as Trump's

communications director.

"This was a murdering of Reince and Bannon," a chief White House official told Politico.

"They said Anthony would get this job over their dead bodies."

Spicer was concerned that Scaramucci had zero experience in communications.

However, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, National Economic Director Gary Cohn, and Deputy National

Security Advisor Dina Powell all supported Scaramucci for the position; they won over

Priebus, Bannon and Spicer.
