The Volkswagen up! was introduced in the Netherlands in 2012.
It was available in Germany a bit sooner. It was introduced in the Netherlands in April 2012.
The first German car was sold in December 2011.
The up! had to replace 2 cars. First, the Fox. It was super cheap and built in South America.
That was apparent. The quality wasn't great.
Second, the Lupo. It was built in Europe, but that was a rather expensive car.
This had to be the solution. A relatively affordable car that is built in Europe; in Slovakia.
There are 2 other factories, in Russia and India, where up!s are built,
but those are for other markets than the European one.
The up! has 2 body types: 3 doors and 5 doors.
What more can I tell? There are 2 triplet brothers. Twins.
Whatever. Škoda and Seat have up! versions called Citigo and Mii.
Those are comparable cars with the same engine.
There are differences in options and finish, but the basis is the same.
The engine is a 1.0 3-cylinder ranging from 59 to 89 hp.
The up! has an electric version as well, the e-up! or 'eup'.
It's up to you how to pronounce it.
That version has 81 hp. Electric hp. You should say kW.
Many kW, I don't know how much. The variety on biogas has 61 hp, but that's the same engine.
ENGINES gasoline, electric
The cars for sale on Marktplaats.nl.
Nearly 1,100 up!s are for sale at the moment. That's a lot.
The devision between the 3-door and 5-door cars is about 1:4.
Automatic transmissions are rare. About 50, so that's not many. 1:20.
On the other hand, you don't want the automatic transmission. We'll talk about that later.
Prices range from 4,500 to 27,000 euros.
The cars with a combustion engine end at 20,000 euros, but the young EVs are more expensive.
Those go up to the 27,000-28,000 euros.
If you drive it as a business car, a 2017 car has 4% additional tax liability.
If it's older, it can be 0% up to 5 years after the first registration. Keep that in mind.
PRICES minimum, maximum
Before we're discussing the things to watch out for, the reasons why to buy an up!.
First, it's a small car with a good finish.
It's a Volkswagen, so it's quality.
The handling is fun. It begs for more hp, which will be solved. There will be a GTI in 2018; that's fun.
I'm looking forward to it now I've driven this car for a few hours.
Finally, the up! seems reliable, but there are things to watch out for.
Many of those you'll notice instantly with the cars from the first series.
This happens more often. The first model years of a new car have childhood diseases.
Let's talk about the transmissions first, especially the ASG.
That's a robotized manual transmission.
It was sold as an automatic transmission. That transmission is...
If you want an automatic transmission, take it for a test drive. It's a strange one.
It doesn't shift gears smoothly.
It's not a sexy transmission. This doesn't have to be a bad thing.
Fine if you can deal with it, but some people thought there was something wrong with it.
It's fine, but it's a transmission with a certain character.
The manual transmissions in the early model years have a problem with going into reverse.
Check if your car does this correctly.
Sometimes you have to try 5-7 times to get it in reverse. That's not nice.
Some cars have a problem with the cooling fan not switching off, even when the car isn't running.
It keeps cooling and drains the battery.
The cooling-fan module has to be replaced to solve the problem.
Cars stop running with dirty camshafts, especially cars used for short distances only.
When it suddenly has to cross a longer distance, it can stall.
This isn't an expensive repair. The sensor can be cleaned, after which you're on your way again.
It can happen when you drive short distances.
Those who drove with 17 inch rims complain about lack of comfort.
That's logical with such big rims under a small car. This makes it bumpy.
That can be explained. If you have a car with that size rims, see if you like it.
Finally, about the powertrain: the timing belt lasts 3 years or 50,000 km (31,000 miles).
Whichever comes first. I think every 3 years is a lot, so I'm telling you.
It's a maintenance thing, but still. I wanted to tell you.
About the interior: people complain about the satnav in the early model years.
The Garmin systems crash and start spinning on the screen.
Drama, so an early model satnav screen can be used for a suction cup for your smartphone.
That's the solution Volkswagen chose.
If you buy an up! now, you get a Volkswagen Connect app.
You install it on your smartphone and use it in a Volkswagen holder on the dashboard.
That's your satnav. Nothing's wrong with that, because smartphones are always up-to-date.
Car satnavs aren't, unfortunately.
There's a thing with the interior ventilation.
There are complaints about moist in the up!. There aren't many vents, so that could explain it.
Cars with A/C solve this quickly, but you may have to defrost the windows on the inside in winter.
That's not nice. People complain about the radio reception in the early model years.
The first months of the first model year have cars suddenly pulling to the left.
That's because the software wasn't great, but an update solved this problem.
This solved the car suddenly turning left.
Lastly, the car we're driving today. It's a fun version in blue.
Unfortunately, you often see gray and black even though it's a fun city car.
It's blue with the Fender sound system. It sounds good.
59 hp, so it's the weakest engine variety, but it's fine for what we did today.
It's for sale at the Pon dealer in Barneveld and it's a little over 10,000 euros.
