Hello friends my name is Arith Härger and today I'm going to
talk about the rune Thurisaz, now before I start I just want to tell you
that if you have seen previous videos you might have noticed that I do not
speak about the alphabetic equivalent of each room and it's important to know
obviously especially in history and archaeology so we might know what our
ancestors wrote and to compare the symbols with the pre-historic earliest forms of
writing such as Ur-Runes and Proto-Runes but what I want to do in these
videos is to tell you about the meaning of each rune and the mythological
connections with each rune and how to use them in rune reading so with no more
delay let's get started
Thurisaz is the rune for tendency of
changes and the will of the Destiny, Thurisaz literally means "Thurses" or "Giants"
so it is connected with strength and resistance but it's also connected with
enthusiasm self-empowerment breaker of resistance and the struggle against
unconsciousness and male sexual prowess it's a rune of conflict so the use of
physical strength and brutality to break any kind of barrier through force it's
implied in here so it's a rune connected with conflicts and disputes
this rune is directly connected with chaos destruction and defense connected with
instinctual will without self-consciousness it's a rune to awaken
the will to action and breaking any resistance of blockages of body mind and spirit
the name of this rune is an ancient title to the Thunder God
Thór and it has been suggested that the form of this rune represents Thór's hammer
Mjölnir although some think that this merely
represents a thorn in a stem
in mythological terms this rune is connected with lightning and thunder so you can already see the
connections with the god Thór and his weapon
Mjölnir, his weapon being the destroyer of Etins Giants and trolls and
everything that represents the forces of chaos
so this rune is also connected with protection - protecting - but protecting
without a strategic thought in your head purely uncontrollable wild rage
so this rune is very much connected with God Thór, one of the most beloved deities to our
Norse ancestors there are many accounts of Thór losing control in a variety of
situations unjustly killing Giants just because he lost his temper almost
getting himself killed in Utgard after the Giants outsmarted him
losing his hammer and having to dress like a woman to recover it and killing the
giant Thrym in the process and challenging and wanting to kill on sight
the giant Hrungnir beneath the Hall of Valhalla after Hrungnir being under the
protection of Odin the protection of a guest protected by the laws of
hospitality and this last one wasn't something our Norse ancestors would
forgive nor forget going against the laws of hospitality trying to kill
someone beneath their own roof under the protection of the host so at first
glance it seems that Thor is portrayed as a mindless dummy but keep in mind
that the pagan gods are very much like us they have many qualities and many flaws
and when Thor is connected with this rune - Thurisaz - he is the personification of
mindless rage no control whatsoever and the implications of it, it might cause
harm not only to oneself but to others around you and irreversible damage
after the creation of the nine cosmic worlds and the victory of the Æsir
over the giants order was installed and every race had a place to dwell but
this order was imposed by force and no matter how many times the gods wage war
against Giants the Giants would rise again and again attempting through
physical force magic and trickery to upset the cosmic order so imposing
something by force will always have repercussions and the struggle to
maintain order without self-consciousness it's like trying to
row your boat against the tide and going nowhere instead of rowing with the flow
now let's go for the meaning of this rune in a rune-reading and let's start
with its upright position so this rune suggests boundaries and in old norse
times this was often physical marked by tickets of hawthorn so this means that
when this rune is drawn in a rune-reading and in its upright position you
it's important for you to know your own limits be that physical or mental
there will be certain limitations in your life certain boundaries that are not meant to
be broken yet you must confront such boundaries with contemplation so don't
force something you are not yet ready to confront hasty decisions made now in the
present will later be regretted this rune is also a symbol of sharp objects
such as knives but it's also associated with fangs and thorns and snakes and so
on the things that might cause you harm the things that go deep in your flesh
cut it open it and exposing you so this indicates a time of personal risks and
there may be people around you who have not the best interests at heart so this
rune can also be used to protect yourself such as the thorn protects the
Rose so will Thurisaz protect its bearer
any boundaries ahead of you must be confronted with a clear reflection of what goes inside you the very
thing you must expose and analyze before you take the right course of action so
this is the time you have to learn how to wait to be patient this is not the
time for hasty decisions you might be facing betrayal speaking of business
matters so this is the time that you have to be ready to defend yourself very
soon but this might also indicate that luck is coming your way in the form or
disguised as a challenge tradition states that this rune when used as a
charm will blunt the weapons and words of your enemies Thurisaz is also a
rune of regeneration and fertilization just remember that this rune is
connected with the God Thór and Thor being a God connected with the fertilization of
the land and his weapon Mjolnir helping in that process just as the
Lightning heralds the rains upon the crops so will Thurisaz break any
barrier so that new beginnings may come and speaking of fertility let's talk
about the inverted meaning of this rune in many Scandinavian poems "thurs" is
described as being harmful to women in the poem Skirnismál or "Skirnir's
journey" Skirnir is a servant of the God Freyr and Freyr being a God associated
with fertility so Skirnir is sent to win a girl
the God Freyr is in love with and anyway the girl is not easily convinced so
Skirnir threatens her with a number of curses among which "thurs" a very negative bindrune
reversed Thurisaz is related with the problems especially
sexual and menstrual problems women might encounter so this indicates that
when it's inverted it's connected with reproductive problems when this rune
appears inverted it is a good sign if you are in doubt of your actions it
tells you to do nothing at all inverted it only emphasizes the warnings
it gives in its upright position so be careful with your choices because you
might be walking into a trap
if you are going through a period of difficulties
just remember that everything depends on your attitude the clarity of your
intentions the firmness of your will
once again unthoughtful decisions at
this point can cause regret if you act out of weakness your own rash decisions
will prove to be your undoing so review your situation pause and
reflect give yourself some time and then proceed cautiously now in terms of bindrunes
if you want to include Thurisaz in in a bindrune just remember that this
rune is very powerful when it comes to magical work related with curses but if
your aim is destruction and unleash the power in you unleash the beast in you
and strength Uruz is a very good rune to bind Thurisaz with
but just remember that Thurisaz is also a rune for protection and when you include
Thurisaz in another bindrune you are asking to place thorns in front of those
who might cause you harm or perhaps you want to protect your family or those you
love so good runes to bind Thurisaz with Algiz, for instance, and Inguz
and earth Allah or Othala or Othila
