Top 5 Greatest Author Feuds - Duration: 5:06.

In life, conflict is inevitable.

This is especially true when it comes

to authors, whose work often serves

as an extension of themselves.

Here's our list of the top five greatest author feuds

in recent history.

Number five, Henry James versus H.G. Wells.

These two great artists started in good standing.

Henry James, older and more established,

initially praised H.G. Wells as "the most interesting

literary man of his generation."

As time went on, however, James became annoyed

with Wells' journalistic writing style,

saying, "so much talent with so little art."

In 1915, Wells published a satire Boon,

in which he parodied James' writing

and depicted a paragraph of his as "a hippopotamus trying

to pick up a pea in the corner."

Wells proclaimed that his writings served a purpose,

and wasn't just fluff.

James clapped back that writing should be nothing

more than an artistic process.

Did you get all that?

Me, neither.

But you can read the full correspondence

published in Henry James, A Life in Letters.

Number four, William Faulkner versus Ernest Hemingway

in the battle over flowery language.

At a lecture at the University of Mississippi,

William Faulkner accused Hemingway of being a coward,

saying, "He has no courage.

He has never crawled out on a limb.

He has never been known to use a word that

might cause the reader to check with a dictionary

to see if it is properly used."

Then, Hemingway retorted with, "Poor Faulkner.

Does he really think big emotions come from big words?

He thinks I don't know the $10 words?

I know them, all right.

But there are older, and simpler, and better words,

and those are the ones I use."

The two never met face to face, and neither backed down

from their opinions.

Number three, Ernest Hemingway versus Gertrude Stein.

Gertrude Stein and Hemingway started out friends

in Paris, reliant upon each other for critique and support.

But when Hemingway was offended by Stein's coined

term, The Lost Generation, they quickly became frenemies.

A rift developed, and Hemingway left Paris.

Stein published The Autobiography

of Alice B. Toklas, in which she painted

quite the nasty portrait of Hemingway.

In response, Hemingway wrote in his A Moveable Feast

that Stein's work contained "repitions

that a more conscientious and less lazy

writer would have put in the wastebasket."

Sick burn, Ernie.

The two never mended their friendship before death.

Hey.

Wow.

We can't believe it either, Owen.

Number two, Norman Mailer versus Gore Vidal.

A renowned instigator, Norman Mailer

was known for physical altercations

with many of his contemporaries, including Gore Vidal.

After Vidal gave a bad review of Mailer's The Prisoner of Sex,

they were set to appear together on The Dick Cavett Show.

Seconds before going on stage, Mailer assaulted Vidal

with a head butt.

Shortly thereafter at a party, Mailer punched Vidal,

knocking him to the ground.

At this moment, Vidal is famously

quoted as saying, "Once again, words fail Norman Mailer."

The two reconciled well before Mailer's death in 2007.

Yay, there is good in this world.

Number one, Mary McCarthy versus Lillian Hellman.

Earning the top spot, this feud is

one that brought a major lawsuit, illness, bankruptcy,

and a Broadway play.

In 1979, Dick Cavett asked his guest Mary McCarthy

about the authors she felt were overrated.

McCarthy called out Lillian Hellman,

saying she was a bad writer and a dishonest writer.

McCarthy went on.

"Every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'"

The next morning, Lillian Hellman

filed a lawsuit against McCarthy, Mr. Cavett, and PBS.

The lawsuit alone destroyed Mary McCarthy's finances,

and diminished her health.

But it never settled, as Hellmann died in 1984.

McCarthy announced that she hadn't

wanted her to die, but rather to live

so that she could see her lose.

In 2002, the late writer Nora Ephron

wrote a Broadway play entitled Imaginary Friends, in which

it's alluded that McCarthy planned

the whole stunt on Cavett's show,

but this has never been proven.

Wow.

That was enlightening, and maybe a little sad.

But when you put yourself out there in any capacity,

you're bound to have haters.

So let's go make a cake filled with rainbows and smiles,

celebrate what these authors contributed to society,

and remember the words they wrote as examples

of passionate lives lived.

What You Never Knew About The Deschanel Sisters - Duration: 5:39.

If you've ever wondered why the stars of the TV shows Bones and New Girl look and sound

like they could be related... it's because they are.

Emily Deschanel, who starred on Bones for 12 seasons, and Zooey Deschanel, who currently

stars on the sitcom New Girl, are sisters.

Individually, they're each highly successful actors, and together, they're an inspiring

pair who support each other in a tough industry.

From their childhood in LA to their adulthood as TV stars, here is the untold truth of the

Deschanel sisters.

"You definitely were a really good big sister…"

"Oh thanks.

Not always."

"Sometimes you were mean."

Different plans

As children, the sisters didn't always have the same career goals in mind.

Zooey knew early on that she wanted to act.

Their father told The Hollywood Reporter,

"...from a very early age, our daughter Zooey wanted to crawl into The Wizard of Oz and

be in that movie.

She's always been that way."

Emily was more on the fence.

In a 2009 BuddyTV interview, she said,

"I think Zooey knew she wanted to be an actress from when she was very young.

Whereas I didn't think I wanted to do that."

A lover of art and science, Emily initially thought she would be an architect, but fell

in love with acting from doing high school plays.

By college, she had gotten fully on board and decided to study theater at Boston University.

Mental games

Big sisters often tease their younger siblings, and it's no surprise that for the Deschanel

sisters, the teasing involved acting.

Emily confessed on Conan that she used to try to scare Zooey by pretending to be an

evil alien who had gotten rid of Emily, taken over her body, and planned to get rid of Zooey

next.

"I would kind of torture her.

I was the older sister and it's just the two of us and we would physically fight all the

time but then I'd play kind of mental games with her."

Family business

It makes sense that the parents of two successful actresses would also be in the entertainment

industry.

The Deschanel sisters' mom, Mary Jo Deschanel, is an actress too.

Her professional roles go all the way back to 1967, and she's appeared in notable projects

like Twin Peaks and The Right Stuff.

Their father, Caleb Deschanel, is a successful cinematographer.

He's been the director of photography for more than 20 movies, including National Treasure

and Fly Away Home.

He's been nominated for five Oscars, most recently in 2005 for The Passion of the Christ.

Pretty impressive family.

California girls

The Deschanels were a true LA family, but the sisters have different memories of their

Hollywood childhoods.

Emily loved it.

She told Los Angeles magazine in 2013,

"I grew up near Santa Monica and the Palisades, but we traveled with my dad for his work,

so we always had an outside perspective and appreciated what Los Angeles has to offer."

Zooey, on the other hand, feels the pressure of living in such an appearance-focused environment.

She told Vulture in 2011,

"I just feel like growing up in Los Angeles, you learn, 'Well you're never gonna be the

prettiest girl in the room, so just don't even try.'

I mean, I care about being pretty, but it's not my most valued thing."

Baby cousins

In 2015, Emily and Zooey both had babies within two months of each other.

They swear it wasn't planned, but these little Deschanel kids will get to grow up with a

cousin who's almost the exact same age.

In June 2015, Emily gave birth to her second child, a baby boy.

Soon after, in July, Zooey gave birth to a daughter.

"We couldn't have planned it better.

It's amazing.

Except for the fact that we even work on the same lots and we bring our babies to work

and yet it's so hard to get them together."

Joining forces

The first time the sisters got to work together professionally wasn't until 2009.

"Bones, I love you, you're my sister."

In the fifth season of Bones, Zooey guest starred in the show's holiday episode as a

cousin of Emily's character.

While Emily has never appeared on Zooey's comedy New Girl, there's still time for Emily

to appear as Jess Day's cousin before the series ends.

Fingers crossed.

Role model siblings

The Deschanels are not the only successful sisters in the limelight and they look to

other sibling pairs as role models.

When asked which ones they admire, Emily named the Kardashians and the Arquettes.

Zooey pointed to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen as well as fashion designers Kate and Laura

Mulleavy.

Imagine all the sibling crossover possibilities among these families!

Veganism

Emily is a committed vegan who has refrained from animal products since she was a teenager.

She told Vegetarian Times that animal rights are so important to her that while working

on Bones, she requested, quote,

"... that there's a character to present the case for animals in every episode."

Zooey, on the other hand, is not vegan — but her sister did inspire her to try out the

lifestyle briefly.

She explained to Vulture that when she found out she was allergic to dairy, eggs, and wheat,

she thought she might as well go full vegetarian, explaining,

"In the back of my mind, I was like, 'It'll be easy!

I can't have that stuff anyway.'

But I didn't realize you have so few options in the end.

To be a gluten-free vegan is, like, the most difficult thing you can possibly be.

And I lasted, like, six months."

The main difference

When asked by Women's Health how the two sisters are different, Emily said her younger sister

is more fearless, explaining,

"In seventh grade this kid didn't invite Zooey to his bar mitzvah.

And she went right up to him and shouted, 'Why didn't you invite me to your bar mitzvah?'

I just love that.

She is fearless.

I would have called my mom crying."

"I always thought you were very cool."

"Oh really?

I tried to play it cool."

"Would played it cool.

I was less cool."

REYLO Roundup News & Interviews About Kylo Ren & Rey Star Wars Last Jedi - Duration: 10:21.

Hello everyone I came across some interviews and articles about REYLO from the last few

weeks I thought you might like.

First up we have an article from People magazine interviewing Rian Johnson about Kylo Ren and

Rey's Force Connection scenes from the Last Jedi.

Rian said ...

"For those force connections, I needed them to talk.

And I thought that the hardest thing that Rey could possibly be faced with is being

forced to talk to this person that she completely despises.

And also the audience, we hate him coming into it.

She had to be our proxy and so that's why in those first few conversations, she is just

spitting in his face."

Johnson says that the key to the actors' chemistry in those scenes was that they were

both physically present on set for each other.

"Every single time we shot one of their sides, the other person was off camera,"

he explains.

"Even to the point where Adam flew to Ireland just to be off camera for Daisy's stuff,

which was essential because they're such intimate conversations.

And that also meant we had to shoot each of those scenes twice basically, which meant

the rehearsal time was really important.

And my editor Bob Ducsay did an amazing job then of making it feel kind of seamless after

the fact."

"Intimate conversations," indeed.

At this point Johnson is well aware that with the action that unfolds in The Last Jedi,

he has stoked the flames of the "Reylo" fandom, so we asked him how he feels about

being the chief architect behind a potentially devastating romantic tragedy.

Rian replied "Well I'll say the two characters and how they interact, like in The Force Awakens,

the interrogation scene, that was one of the most intriguing scenes to me both on the page

and when I saw the scene that J.J. Abrams created."

"So I think he set up this very interesting dynamic.

And then to get to play with it in this movie and now, to get to hand it back to J.J. and

see how it gets resolved, I'm really, really excited to see what happens."

Well, I'm so impressed, how sweet is this!

I was wondering if they were filming together each of these scenes because the emotions

they have in those moments were so convincing and the editing was really clever.

Knowing that these two were together for all of those Force Connections just makes me love

this movie even more, what a great team Adam and Daisy are.

There was an additional People magazine article with Rian Johnson about Kylo Ren's shirtless

scene, Rian says...

"It's all about those Force connection scenes.

The keyword being intimacy.

And the idea that this was a way to just, why not step that up?

The idea that, what's even more uncomfortable having a conversation face to face with a

person you don't want to, is if they're half-naked during it, while you're having

to do it.

And so it was just another way of kind of disrobing Kylo literally and figuratively

a little bit more, and pushing that sense of these conversations becoming increasingly

more intimate."

Not to mention the fact that by this point during filming, Driver's physique was particularly

photogenic.

Rian said "Adam looks so damn good because he'd been training hardcore for the past

six months for those fight scenes.

I'm like, 'Eh.

He looks so good.

We should put him up there.'

Meanwhile on Twitter I came across a post by Emo Kylo Ren that Rian Johnson liked, it

says:

No Hux I definitely have a girlfriend

we speak with our minds she has a magic cave where she does syncopated

snapping and she's super good with a lightsaber and

like so strong with the force no I don't know her last name

but she definitely isn't made up

In a recent interview Daisy and Mark Hamill had in Shanghai about the Last Jedi, Rey responds

to what I believe to be questions concerning Poe and Rey.
