U.S. gun crimes continue into 2018 - Duration: 0:44.

2017 has been a year racked by mass shootings in the U.S., and a series of violent gun crimes

on the last day of the year has added to the grim tally.

A 37-year-old man fired more than a hundred rounds on sheriff's deputies in Colorado,

who were responding to a noise complaint.

The ambush left one officer dead and four others injured.

The suspected was also shot and killed.

Meanwhile in New Jersey, a 16-year-old boy is in custody after he fatally gunned down

his parents, sister and a family friend.

The teenage suspect's brother and grandfather managed to escape unharmed.

Iran protests leave at least 12 dead - Duration: 1:53.

At least twelve people have died in clashes between protestors and police as anti-government

protests in Iran become increasingly violent.

The demonstrations are now well into their fifth day and are getting larger.

Ro Aram reports.

The protests are being described as the largest to strike Iran since its disputed 2009 presidential

election.

They were first sparked on Thursday in Mashhad with demonstrators voicing their anger over

Iran's stagnant economy and alleged government corruption.

They soon spread nationwide, developing into a condemnation against clerical leaders in

power since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, as well as President Hassan Rouhani.

Rouhani has tried to downplay the significance of the protests and said on Sunday that Iranians

had the right to criticize, but must not cause unrest.

He also stressed on Monday that Iran "has seen many similar events and passed them easily."

Meanwhile, police said that among those killed was a policeman, who was shot by a protestor

- the first reported fatality among security forces.

Hundreds of people have been arrested and state television aired footage of a ransacked

private bank, broken windows, overturned cars and a firetruck that appeared to have been

set ablaze.

U.S. President Donald Trump continued his tweets in support of protesters into the New

Year.

He described Tehran as "failing at every level despite the terrible deal made with them by

the Obama Administration."

He added that the "great Iranian people have been repressed for many years.

They are hungry for food & for freedom."

Iranian state television quoted Rouhani as saying that Trump had no right to sympathize

with Iran because he has previously called the Iranian people "terrorists."

Hyundai Motor Group aims to sell 7.5 million cars in 2018 - Duration: 0:48.

Korea's largest automaker, Hyundai Motor Group, revealed its New Year's goal of selling a

total of some seven-point-five million cars in 2018.

Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors announced on Tuesday that they aim to sell

nearly four-point-seven million and two-point-nine million vehicles respectively.

Although the exact figures haven't been released yet, industry experts have been speculating

that the group sold more than seven-point-two million cars last year.

The 2018 business plan aims to sell 300 thousand more cars than last year, but is 700 thousand

lower than the carmaker's initial target announced last January.

The cut down is attributed to falling demand in its primary markets including China and

the United States.

Single digit morning lows under bright skies - Duration: 2:05.

Good afternoon, we kicked off the new year under mostly sunny skies and higher than average

temperatures.

Seoul will top out at 2 degrees Celsius.

Daegu and Gwangju will get up to 7 and 8 degrees.

The air will get colder and drier as the week goes on, expect to have mostly sunny skies

dominate for the whole week, while Jeju and southern provinces will have snow and rain

at times.

It's time to set your New Year's resolutions... but according to a recent study only about

8 percent of us who set goals achieve them.

The experts all highlighted that it's important to have realistic and specific plans that

you can stick to it.

With that, let's take a look at the international weather for viewers around the world.

While most regions in South Korea will have mostly sunny skies with higher than average

temperatures, most cities in North Korea will have freezing afternoon highs but bright skies.

As for the rest of Asia, China will have a similar weather pattern to Seoul with lows

plunging to nearly minus 10 degrees Celsius with lower single digit afternoon highs.

Meanwhile, Melbourne will hit 22C today with showers in the morning and evening.

Heading to North America, an extreme cold warning has been issued in Montreal, you will

have a brutally cold few days there, while the Chicago area is off to a frigid start

to the New Year as well.

As for South America, Bogota and Sao Paulo will have unstable weather conditions.

Taking you to Europe,..

Rome and Madrid will enjoy a mild and sunny start to the New Year.

Lastly to Africa, major cities will enjoy bright skies along with mild to warm highs.

IOC welcomes N. Korea's interest in participating in 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics - Duration: 1:50.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made clear in his New Year's address that the North is

highly interested in participating in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

And the wheels are turning with both the IOC and the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee

saying that they relish the North's interest.

The International Olympic Committee welcomed North Korea's interest and willingness to

participate in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, held this February in South Korea.

In a media interview,... the IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said the IOC will closely cooperate

with the organizing committee for the PyeongChang 2018, the Korean government, and North Korea's

Olympic Committee.

And the head of the PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committee, Lee Hee-beom, said it is a positive

sign from North Korea,.. and a New Year's gift.

IOC President Thomas Bach said in his New Year's message that the IOC will keep monitoring

the situation closely to ensure the safety of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics,...

stressing his support for the Olympic message of hope and peace,... and looking beyond political

division.

On Monday,... North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said in his New Year's address that the North

wishes the success of the Winter Olympics in South Korea,... saying his country is willing

to take the measures necessary for sending North Korean athletes to the South.

Kim also suggested the two Koreas could meet immediately to discuss the required steps.

North Korea didn't participate in the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics in South Korea.

It's the first official work day of 2018 for President Moon Jae-in... and we can expect

the South Korean leader to have a jam-packed schedule today.

Hojun, just a day after New Year's Day, what's happening at the Presidential Office.

Mark, right now as we speak, a special luncheon marking the start of the new year, hosted

by the President, himself, is happening under the slogan 'A Worthy and Just Country.'

He invited representatives of each sector of society to the event; among the 246 guests

are political and governmental leaders, heads of conglomerates, and 18 ordinary citizens,

who, the Blue House said, were exemplars that the rest of the nation can empathize with

and be encouraged.

According to the press briefing that took place this morning, special musical performances

will take place.

President Moon will deliver his new year's greeting to the guests, which will be followed

by those of the Chief Justices of the Supreme and Constitutional Court as well as Prime

Minister Lee Nak-yeon.

I'll bring you more updates as the event develops.

Now, earlier in the day, President Moon made a brief visit to the National Cemetery, paying

his respects to the nation's fallen heroes at around 8 am, along with top government

leaders and his senior aides.

During his visit, he left a message in the visitor log saying he will prepare for the

100th anniversary of the national foundation,... once again settling the dispute that the date

modern Korea was founded in 1919 when the country's provisional government was established

in Shanghai during Japan's colonial rule.

South Korea, U.S. working closely for joint response to North Korea: U.S. State Dept. official - Duration: 2:09.

Pundits and experts have been reading between the lines of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's

New Year's speech.

The verdict is that it was pro-South Korea... and very clearly anti-American.

While the analysis goes on and we await the next developments,... the U.S. State Department

has come out,... saying Seoul and Washington are closely cooperating on a unified response

to the North.

Lee Ji-won has more.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's New Year's speech sparked a flurry of speculation and

analysis worldwide, especially within the U.S.

Amid concerns Kim is attempting to drive a wedge between the alliance with his 'pro-South

Korea, anti-U.S. stance',...

Voice of America reported Tuesday that an official from the U.S. State Department said

it's working closely with Seoul on formulating a joint response to the North.

And to South Korea's welcoming of Kim's comment on his willingness to send athletes to the

PyeongChang Olympics in February,.. the official said the U.S. is certain the South will host

a safe and successful Winter Games.

This comes as Kim warned the U.S. that the entire mainland is within the range of his

nuclear weapons,... while, expressing North Korea's will to take part in the PyeongChang

Games and that they sincerely hope the event is held successfully.

Many watchers say the young leader's two-track approach is a ploy to shake the South Korea-U.S.

alliance.

While most of the U.S. media sees Kim's willingness to join the Olympics as a gesture of reconciliation,..

Bloomberg reports that it puts ties between the two countries to the test.

The New York Times also reported that Kim's words are merely aimed at alleviating international

sanctions and to brew discord between South Korea and the U.S.

South Korea and the U.S. share one goal of denuclearizing Pyongyang,.. but have different

ideas on how to achieve it.

President Moon Jae-in wants talks and negotiations,.. while U.S. President Donald Trump continues

to emphasize sanctions and pressure.

Korean trade ministry expects sluggish growth in exports in 2018 - Duration: 2:48.

Looking back at Korea's economy last year, the country's exports for 2017 hit a record

high.

And much of that was from the boom in semiconductors.

Yet the prospects for 2018 don't seem quite as bright.

Our Cha Sang-mi reports.

Korea's traditional growth engine, exports, set a new record last year.

The trade ministry announced Monday that the country's total outbound shipments for 2017

jumped nearly 16 percent on-year... to nearly 5-hundred-and-74 billion U.S. dollars.

That's the largest total amount for a single year since data was first compiled in 1956.

Imports also surged 17-point-7 percent to a little over 4-hundred-and-78 billion.

For the year, Korea posted a surplus of 95-point-8 billion dollars, up from 89-point-2 billion

in 2016.

Shipments from Korea accounted for 3-point-6 percent of all global exports, bringing the

country's ranking to 6th place from 8th the year before.

Most of Korea's main products -- 9 out of 13 product types -- saw a rise in shipments.

Semiconductors accounted for nearly 60 percent of the year's exports, followed by petroleum

goods at over 30 percent and then petrochemicals and ships.

And it was a landmark year for memory chips,... shipments of which reached 90 billion dollars

for the year, more than the country's total exports back in 1994.

The trade ministry said Korea has diversified its export markets, reaching out to countries

in Southeast Asia, Central and South America, India and the Commonwealth of Independent

States, and seeing large jumps in export growth to these regions in 2017.

(KOREAN) "We would like to find a new trade market

away from the China and U.S.-centered trade.

Through the New South Policy and the New North Policy we will strive to expand our trade

map."

Yet the prospects for this year don't look quite as dazzling.

The Trade Ministry expects a 4 percent growth in exports in 2018, but highlighted a few

risk factors that could hit growth rates.

Financial uncertainties stemming from monetary normalization in major economies and a rise

in global protectionism could slow export growth.

But while Korea may face a stronger local currency, higher interest rates, rising oil

prices, and geopolitical risks, the Trade Ministry promised to strive hard to attain

4 percent export growth for 2018.

Korea's working population shrinking fast - Duration: 2:03.

South Korea's estimated fertility rate was among the lowest in the world at just one-point-two-six

births per woman in 2017,... ranking a lowly 219th among 224 nations around the world,

according to CIA's World Fact Book.

As a result,... the working age population is also set to decrease rapidly, changing

the country's demographic structure.

Kim Hyesung reports.

South Korea's working age population is shrinking fast.

According to the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs on Tuesday, the number

of working people in the country, those aged between 15 and 64, will plunge by nearly 19

percent between 2017 and 2037.

This is far higher than the OECD average, whose working age population is estimated

to edge down by just zero-point-one percent over the next two decades.

In South Korea, the population under the age of 50 will fall by double digits, while people

aged between 60 and 64 will go up by more than 23 percent, and those above 65 will soar

by 118 percent.

In OECD countries, however, those aged under 40 are estimated to fall by less than four

percent.

The population aged above 40 will grow by around one percent, but it's a more gradual

demographic change than that of South Korea.

Since reaching its peak of over 37 million people in 2016, South Korea's working age

population has started to drop due to the country's ultra-low fertility rate of one-point-two-six.

The working age population, which accounted for about 73 percent in 2017 will drop below

60 percent by 2037, meaning more financial burden on the working population as welfare

costs are set to soar.

With this demographic time bomb ticking, experts say specially-tailored policies are essential

to ensure there's enough work for the growing senior citizen labor force.
