Singing as a Tool - Duration: 11:12.

ever wondered why some people seem to have a gift for music have you ever

wished that you could play by ear sing in tune improvise and jam you're in the

right place time to turn those wishes into reality

welcome to the Musicality Podcast with your host Christopher Sutton after our

recent episode with Gavin young I thought I'd do an episode about the

benefits of singing but then I changed my mind

he talked about how wonderful it feels to sing in a group and how emotionally

uplifting it can be and how it helps connect you with your own authentic

voice and so I was going to do a follow-up episode on how singing is so

much fun and all the benefits it brings and it is fun and it does bring an

amazing range of physical and emotional benefits whether you're singing solo or

especially in a group and I think we will do an episode about that in future

but here's the thing I think a lot of you listening do not consider yourself

singers you're musicians of all different kinds and while the fun and

the benefits are great and will definitely keep you singing once you get

going I just wasn't convinced that it would be

enough to get you to try it out for yourself and if you are a singer you

might be overlooking some of the benefits singing can bring outside of

that emotional and enjoyable aspect I realized that actually the point I

really wanted to share with you and what might encourage some of you to give

singing a try for the first time was the very practical very useful impact of

adding singing to your toolkit as a musician whether or not you ever decided

to get up on stage or join a choir how singing is a tool that any musician

should be able to use and that it doesn't take long to master the basics

enough for it to be this tool for you if you're listening and thinking well sure

but I can't actually sing then please don't tune out check out our previous

episode with George Bevin for clearer evidence that even those who think

they're tone-deaf can learn to sing and we'll have a link in the show notes to a

guide we've written that explains how you can do it so first let's get clear

on what we're talking about we are not talking about developing an incredible

versatile knock-your-socks-off ability to sing we are not talking about

you declaring yourself to be a singer and fronting a band or even joining a

choir what we're talking about is simply getting to the stage where if you want

to sing a certain note or sequence of notes they're going to come out clearly

and with the right pitches that alone is enough to make singing a powerful tool

for you and to give you some idea with the way we teach it at musical you

you're looking at maybe a few weeks of practice to get to this level it doesn't

have to take long so then what's the value of getting to that level of

singing ability if you're not looking to perform as a singer there are a whole

bunch of benefits but the short and simple answer is that it's a way to

bring musical ideas from your head out into the world without the added

complication of finding the right notes on an instrument if you don't have

singing as a tool then it can feel like there's this big gulf between hearing

something or imagining it in your mind's ear and then playing it on your

instrument with singing you're able to bridge that gap or remove the need for

the instrument step altogether let's go through some specific benefits and

applications of singing as a tool first off learning to sing in June is one of

the best ways to train your sense of pitch singing in tune requires two major

components controlling your vocal pitch but also being able to very clearly and

accurately hear and imagine the pitch that you're actually aiming for so as

you learn to sing in tune you train your ears to hear better weather notes a

sharp or flat or perfectly on pitch this is something that you might never have

to do before depending on the instrument you play but it's such a fundamental

skill that you absolutely do not want to overlook you can do pure ear training

exercises to hone your pitch accuracy but learning to sing in tune is an easy

natural and effective way to do it learning to sing also gives you better

audio as well as the real-world pitch training we just talked about

you're also training your mind's ear your ability to Oddie eight meaning

imagine music with accurate pitch in a recent episode we talked about active

listening and how it helps you improve your audio and more vividly remember or

create music in your head learning to sing in tune

similarly develops the accuracy with which you can pitch notes in your mind

singing is also an enormous help for ear training this is something we really

emphasize at musical you and also came up in our past episode with Brent vastra

of learned jazz standards that when you use your voice as part of ear training

exercises you're able to progress a lot faster there are a few specific ways

that your voice can help train your ears as I just mentioned learning to sing

also helps you sing in your mind and that means when you're trying to do ear

training and recognize notes or chords and things like that you have a much

more powerful musical imagination to bring to the task singing also gives you

a way to experiment out loud while trying to do ear training for example if

you're trying to recognize an interval you might sing the start of a reference

song to see if it matches up if you're trying to recognize a chord progression

you might sing along with the root notes of the chords the baseline to see how

those pitches compare and that can reveal the chords that are being used

you can also do some nifty vocal acrobatics for example if you're trying

to identify a harmonic interval meaning two notes played at the same time being

able to sing those two notes back individually transforms that interval

into an ascending or a descending one and that might make it easier for you to

recognize in time as you get better you'll probably do these things in your

head or skip them altogether but while you're learning it's really helpful to

be able to experiment out loud by singing the third way singing can help

with ear training is by really testing whether you heard what you think you

heard in a lot of cases

I would say that if you can't sing back what you heard then you haven't really

understood it by ear one example would be recognizing a chord as major or minor

you can listen for the overall sound of the chord but that tends to be prone to

mistakes particularly in a real musical context and it gets harder as you try

more ambitious chords like seventh chords or extended chords but if you're

able to sing back each note of the chord that both tests that you truly heard

what was going on and gives you a clear set of notes to explore and evaluate to

identify the chord type for example you might identify the sulfa name of each

note or the intervals between them and that will tell you the code type for

sure if you find yourself struggling with a pitch related ear training task

the chances are that you aren't actually hearing clearly enough yet to be able to

sing back each of the notes you're listening to once you practice that and

you use singing as a tool in this way the actual task tends to become much

easier so that's how singing as a tool can help you with ear training but

there's even more benefits beyond that the next couple I wanted to share have

to do with creativity the first is that singing enables easier and freer

experimentation and creation in music yes you can sit with an instrument and

noodle around with scales or patterns and try to create something but that's

both more complicated and more limiting compared with doing it directly with

your voice your singing voice is the most direct path to bring musical ideas

you imagine out into the world you have total freedom of pitch so you're not

trapped in memorized patterns or what happens to work well or match your level

of instrument technique and you can immediately express what you want to and

then analyze it after if you want to translate it onto an instrument or write

it down as we talked about with Davin on the last episode singing is the most

natural and direct form of musical expression available to us it may seem

intimidating at the outset but once you break past that little barrier it's in

normal natural and liberating to be able to

create music with your voice the final benefit of singing as a tool that I

wanted to touch on was communication being able to express musical ideas with

your voice isn't just helpful for private creation by yourself like we

just talked about it's also hugely helpful if you're collaborating with

other musicians if you don't feel able to express your ideas with your voice it

can be very frustrating in a band or another group to have to try to

translate what you're thinking onto your instrument before you can share it if

instead you can just quickly and easily sing the idea you have in mind you skip

all of the instrument specifics and complications and you can bounce ideas

back and forth immediately and directly so this was meant to be a quick five

minute episode but it turns out there's quite a lot to say and I haven't even

close to covered all of the benefits that come from getting a basic level of

singing under your belt so if you're feeling inspired please go ahead and

take the next step at musical you we specialize in helping people go from

zero to being able to sing confidently and reliably in tune we have a dedicated

roadmap to show you the way there'll be a link to that in the show notes and we

would love to help you make singing a valuable tool in your musical life we'll

also have a link in the show notes to our free guide so that if you're not yet

ready to join musical you there's still some easy next steps there to get you

and your singing journey if you have felt limited in how you can express your

musical ideas or you found ear training challenging or you've wanted to know

that if the need arises yes you can absolutely sing simple things and sound

good then I hope this episode has encouraged you to add singing to your

musical toolkit thank you for listening to the musicality podcast

A Random English Lesson with an Important Message at the End - Duration: 7:54.

- Come check this out, alright what I'm gonna do is

empty trash, empty trash.

Empyting how many, wow.

This might take some time.

Hello everybody this is Jack from ToFluency.com

the trash just emptied it is complete.

Now the reason I'm doing that is because I've spent

around six hours, yes six hours over the last two days

going through all my files on my laptop

and on my main computer and this is something

I've wanted to do for awhile, sometimes when I opened

up my computer and think about doing something new.

I'm just overwhelmed by the amounts of files there.

Things a little bit crazy, and I wanted to get rid of

a lot of things and to organize everything

so that I can start creating with blank spaces.

Before I talk about why this is important to you

as an english learner let me tell you about

my mornin, I woke up at 6:45 am and I was hopin to

go downstairs to get a cup of tea instead of coffee.

We're gonna talk about that soon, and to sit alone

with my thoughts just to enjoy that cup of tea.

As soon as I started moving my daughter woke up.

And one day soon I will have a morning alone.

From there I did the normal mornin routine,

my son didn't want to put his shoes on he didn't want

to get in the car he didn't want to go to school.

But when he got to school he had a great time.

And he hasn't been to school for a couple

of days because there's been a lot of snow recently.

Well let's just say not that much snow, but the roads

have been icy and I went to the gym, mainly to sit

in the sauna and the steam room to try and clear

this sinus problem yes I'm still suffering

two weeks later, it's difficult to get a doctor's

appointment, but I'm trying new things.

Things like Vitamin A, and Zinc and Garlic

and a few other things that have arrived to our

house today, and then did somethin very excitin

I went through the car wash, our car was dirty.

Because of all the salt and grit on the road

but it was also crazy inside the car.

And luckily today they were givin away free car washes

which made me very happy.

There was no line when I got there but soon the word

got out and there were cars backed up right

to the road of people trying to get

a car wash, so I went through the car wash which

was like a little disco, it was very interestin

and then I vacuumed out the car.

First I had to get rid of a lot of things again

and put things into bags so the car now is organized

my computer's organized I'm pickin up on a theme here

like I said in one of my latest videos, or my latest video.

I'm lookin at minimalism, and organization

so that I can feel more creative and free to go

whichever direction I want to go.

I then sat here for about two hours waitin for

my pain to go away so I took some of this Aleve,

I don't want to take pills all the time but

my god it's been quite painful.

I've called a couple of doctors, they're not taking

new patients so I'm gonna call some more soon.

And finally the pain has gone away and when it does

I feel fantastic, I feel good I feel creative

I feel energetic and motivated.

But you know when you're sick it's difficult

to really do anything because the pain is just too much.

I then had some delicious chicken soup.

And I'm trying to limit the amount of coffee I drink

so I only had one cup, today that's a lie I had two at home

one at the office, which is pretty good for me.

So I'm trying to reduce coffee and milk because apparently

milk is bad for your sinus problems.

I'm not gonna talk about sinuses all the time

because I'm gonna get rid of the sinus problem soon.

And then started lookin at new cameras because I'm

interested in technology and there, my pain was still there

so I didn't feel like doin anything.

And whenever I look at new cameras, I realize this one

that I'm using right now is fantastic,

and I know how to use it and I keep getting better

at using it, so there's no need to get anythin else

right now, though I might be tempted if a new camera

comes out later, in the year.

For the rest of the day I'm goin to edit this video,

which is kind of meta, I'm going to do some language

trainin, pick up my son, get some Sushi,

and hopefully have a lovely evenin at home.

It's actually feeling quite warm outside so I might

spend some time walkin at some point too.

This has been a bit of a different video,

by the way I will leave some of the key words

and phrases that I use in the description.

So that you can learn english in a natural way

which is what we like to do here.

But if you picked up on a bit of the theme,

it's about minimalism, it's about getting rid of

things you don't need and I think when it comes to

learning english this is important too.

Because it's very easy and it's temptin to buy six

books to sign up to different courses, to think about

going away to the UK or America or Malta to take

an immersion course, and sometimes you can go to YouTube

and watch all these videos and you get different types

of advice and you're thinking okay I'll take

a grammar lesson or should I take this type of lesson?

And what I'm tryin to say is do what works for you

create a study plan and stick with it.

Allow it to evolve and change according to what's workin

and what isn't, but don't let other things try

to distract you and also think about creatin a space

at home, at work or elsewhere.

Where you can just focus on working

and get organized if this is stoppin you from

learnin english, I'd love to know your thoughts on this

do you have a place where you study?

Do you have a routine that you have?

Do you sometimes get distracted,

by different types of things?

Please let me know, I want to learn from you so I can

make better videos for you too.

And just again, I'll let you know, I'll leave some

key words and phrases in the description.

So that's been my day, not very productive

I've probably procrastinated quite a bit.

But you know health first, I'm gonna get organized

and then I'm gonna pump out videos and lessons

and podcasts for you guys.

Once the chaotic period is over, and once things

start to become a little bit more routine.

So again happy new year, go watch that video I made

on Tuesday where I talk about goals, and how you can achieve

your fluency goals in 2018.

As ever thank you so much for watchin,

and one last thing be sure to read my comment

I'm gonna leave a comment, which is important

be sure to read it, thank you again.

(upbeat music)
