Waching daily Jan 21 2018

- Like if we're talkin' flavor town, this one is like

it knocks you right the (beep) out in the face.

(swooshing) (creaking)

(popping) (upbeat music)

- When people think of curry,

they think of curry in like Asia.

- My knowledge of curry only expands

from Trinidadian dishes.

- People try to make it like an Indian thing.

- Outside of the east Asian community,

I don't know how common it is for

people to consume or know about Japanese curry.

- So today, we will be trying different

types of curry from around the world.

(whooshing) (upbeat music)

(pops)

(whooshes)

- [Woman] Hmm.

- Hmm. Mm.

- So like in Idian dishes, or at least

in my family, I don't want to speak

for everyone, we don't really say this type of curry.

We'll say, Tikka Masala, or this type of dish.

- So it's definitely different from Japanese curry.

- Slightly spicy, it's slightly sweet.

- And the color is such a brilliant color.

- Whenever my family makes Caribbean dishes,

the curry is like a deeper color.

Like a deeper brown.

- I've had curries like this before,

but this isn't like necessarily what my family would make.

We don't really make mango based curries.

- India's so diverse. Yeah.

- [Woman] It's good. - It's really good.

(upbeat music)

(pops)

(whooshes)

(whooshes)

- This is what I'm talkin' about when

I said that curry was darker.

- Looks like something my mom would make at home.

- Look at the stainage.

- Oh wow. Yeah. - Yep.

- That is so tender. Sorry.

Just talkin' with my mouth open.

- It's a lot heartier.

It almost feels like a stew. - Mm hmm.

- It's also drier which I think is interesting.

- The juices are like almost like the sauce part of it.

- This is actually like really good.

- Definitely expanded my mind on what

curry is and it is delicious (laughs).

- I would eat it again. (whooshes)

(upbeat music)

(pops)

(whooshes)

- So this is the kind of curry that I ate growing up.

- It's like sweet and tangy.

- It smells really good.

- Usually it has like a lot of

potatoes and carrots and meat and stuff.

- I like the consistency of it.

- It's really good.

- It's not from somewhere unseemless.

- Right?

- Where you can just normally have access to.

- This is definitely. This is it.

- I totally understand that it is

nearly impossible to describe curry as a type of food.

- It definitely expanded my mind out of Asia.

- Curry, defining it and understanding it is really complex.

- We're limited by the language we have.

Whereas these authentic dishes

have different words for them in their own regions with

a larger breadth than just what

the word curry to us can contain.

- [Woman] Bone.

(laughing)

(whooshing) (creaking)

How NASA Engineers Use Origami To Design Future Spacecraft - Duration: 4:21.

Origami is the ancient art of Japanese paper folding. For thousands of years it has been

used to create stunning works of art. But origami has also been used in more surprising

ways, like car airbags, stents and even space exploration. What we want in space are large

structures, not necessarily massive, but large. Which means you can make them out of thin

materials, and whenever you can make them out of thin materials, you can use origami

to fit them in these rockets. Many space projects have used the folding principles of Origami;

the solar array wings on the ISS use a z folding pattern and the Mars Exploration Rover used

a fan folding pattern. Because the biggest rockets we have right now are only about 5

meters in diameter, we have to come up with a way of folding up this very large structure

into spaces we can launch it inside a rocket, and once it gets to space it can unfold itself.

And origami is one mechanism by which we can do that, because it gives us the underlying

mathematics of how large thin sheets fold up. One origami project currently in development

at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab is The Starshade, which is essentially a giant, star blocker.

Have you ever tried to take a picture of someone when the bright sun is beating down on them?

All the detail gets washed out. This is the same problem astronomers have when trying

to image exoplanets. Currently astronomers detect these exoplanets indirectly, using

a shadow technique called radial velocity. They can't be imaged in detail though, because

the stars they circle are billions of times brighter than the are.

This is where the Starshade comes in, to help block the bright light to better help astronomers

learn more about these mysterious planets and whether they could host alien life. One

of the ways in which we're thinking about suppressing the starlight is using something

called Starshade, which is a very large external occulter, that flies in front of a space telescope,

blocks out that starlight, so you can image that really faint planets right next to it.

Sounds easy enough, but the Starshade is massive, roughly the size of a baseball diamond. Because

the Starshade is so huge, we have to come up with a way of folding up this very large

structure into spaces that we can launch it inside a rocket. And once it gets to space,

it can unfold itself. Which is where origami comes in. So this is one of the candidate

fold patterns that we had for the inner part of the Starshade, what we call the optical

shield. It's got a very deterministic shape when its folded up, so we design it to have

this shape in which it can account for the thickness of that blanket. You can mathematically

define how this sheet of paper is folded up. And the way it unfolds is just like that.

It creates these very nice spirals inside the fold structure, it's quite remarkable

in its simplicity. This giant space flower may seem simple in design but not in implementation.

The Starshade will need to unfold with millimeter accuracy. Once opened thrusters will move

the craft through space, positioning The Starshade between an exoplanet and it's star. With

the star now being shaded, the telescope can image the planet in detail to find out whether

conditions for life exist. Origami has been on Earth for thousands of years, but we're

really just getting started on bringing the ancient art of folding to space. Origami is

already influencing designs to keep satellites working properly in the coldness of space,

to shield spacecrafts from dangerous radiation, and explore and scout new alien terrain. We

can take these ideas from origami and apply them to spacecraft structures that way. Because

when it comes to the future of space exploration, if we want to think big, we also have to think

small. For more science documentaries, check out this one right here. Don't forget to
