Waching daily Jan 21 2018

Man, the Virtual Boy must've been the most amazing thing ever,

since all these memes are praising it.

If only I had a chance to play it for myself

and be a witness to the Virtual Boy's indescribable greatness…

I actually own one of these.

The Virtual Boy is a pretty infamous part of Nintendo history.

What was going to be the company's first ambitious foray into 3D gaming ended up being

a rushed commercial disaster of a product and their lowest selling console to date.

The numerous factors that led to the Virtual Boy's demise are pretty well-known at this point.

In case you're not familiar with the history of the Virtual Boy's conception, here's

a brief summary.

In the 90s, a company named Reflection Technology pitched a stereoscopic 3D display technology

to Nintendo, which led Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the Game Boy, to envision a unique and

innovative idea for a game console.

But many cost-cutting measures had to be taken, such as using a single color display and replacing

a head-tracking function with a stationary stand.

And as Nintendo was also devoting resources to the upcoming Nintendo 64, the development

of the Virtual Boy was extremely rushed, and even Yokoi himself didn't want its current

state to be released.

The final result was all the ingredients of a commercial disaster: a high price, terrible

game library and a red-and-black display that caused many health concerns.

Nowadays, the Virtual Boy has become one of the gaming community's favorite punching bags,

next to all these things, but it's also become a pretty novel collector's item,

and not a lot of people have actually had an experience playing it first-hand.

I wasn't expecting to actually own one myself until I came across one being sold online

at a reasonable price for a rare console.

So in this video, we're going to take a closer look at the actual Virtual Boy, as

well as the four games I currently have for the system.

The design for the Virtual Boy itself is actually pretty cool-looking.

Back in the 90s it probably would've screamed

"LOOK AT THIS FUTURISTIC GADGET WHICH IS THE BENCHMARK OF TOMORROW'S TECHNOLOGY"

which is basically what every piece of 90s hardware strived to achieve.

But then they decided to place it on a stand and now it's just a derpy robot.

But anyway, back to the system.

The stereo speakers are located on the sides, and you'd think they'd be sorta quiet

as this is a single-player system but nOOOOPPE.

SHUT U-

Most of the stuff you need is on the bottom, with a volume control, headphone jack, controller

port, as well as an external port which would supposedly be used for a link cable.

But that never happened due to the short lifespan of the system, so now only one person gets

to shut themselves away from reality instead of two.

This is also where you put in the cartridges, oddly enough with their labels facing down

instead of up which really urks me.

The controller itself is probably the most fascinating part to me.

First of all, it's actually the part that houses the power supply and power switch.

You could use an AC adapter but I don't have one so I'll just have to use 6 double

A batteries, which gives a reported 4 hours of battery life.

It might seem a bit small at first glance but trust me, you won't be playing this

thing for 4 hours straight.

It features two D-Pads which actually feel really great.

This was before the Nintendo 64 introduced the first proper analog stick, so for games

that require moving in a 3D space, the D-Pad was made to have a larger curvature, which

makes it more comfortable to just place your thumb on the middle and move it in all directions,

as opposed to just pressing each direction individually.

It's actually a pretty good solution even though it doesn't allow for analog movement.

Other than that, you have the standard A, B, Start, Select and shoulder buttons.

In general, the controller just feels great to hold on your hands, the two hand grips

on the sides feel really nice.

I always wondered why they went back to having only A and B buttons on the Virtual Boy and

Nintendo 64 after the famous diamond arrangement on the SNES, but I suppose it's because

they didn't want to over-complicate things and confuse players after adding in an extra

set of directional buttons, especially with the Virtual Boy where you can't exactly

look down at the controller while playing.

And now onto the magical stereoscopic 3D display.

Its implementation on the Virtual Boy is actually pretty genius.

Back in the 90s LEDs were uncommon and super expensive, so besides from using a cheaper

red LED to cut costs, the display of the Virtual Boy when taken out is actually

only 1 pixel tall!

A mirror inside the headpiece oscillates rapidly when the Virtual Boy is on, mapping every

pixel pattern onto a full image.

You might think that makes the resulting image pretty blurry, but the final images you get

are actually really sharp.

Of course, it would be hard to capture the actual display on a camera, so here's an

approximate mockup.

The image itself doesn't actually take up that much of your field of vision, but is

still very clear.

I'm actually pretty impressed by this display method.

And in case it doesn't look clear enough for you, there's a slider and knob at the

top for you to adjust the focus and the distance between the two screens for each eye.

Now as for if it actually causes massive headaches like some people say it does…

...no.

Well, obviously it does put a bit of strain on your eyes, as the visor closes off any

external light source and just leaves you staring at a bright red LED screen, and that

is bound to cause some tiredness after playing for a long period.

Personally though, I haven't found it to be that big of an issue since it's not like

I play this thing every day but hey, your mileage may vary.

So that just about covers the system itself.

Looks like a VR headset from the future but in reality it's just a really bulky monochrome

3D display.

Now let's get to the games.

As you can imagine, not a lot of games were actually released for the Virtual Boy, and

as of this video, I only own 4 games for the thing, so I guess that's enough to look

at for one video.

There may be a second part to this video once I've acquired more games, but who knows.

Also, as a side note, recording clean gameplay from the Virtual Boy itself, let alone 3D

footage is basically impossible, so for the sake of this video I'll be capturing 2D

footage from an emulator instead.

Well then, let's begin with Mario's Tennis, which was a pack-in title for the Virtual

Boy in North America, as well as the more obscure first game in the Mario Tennis series.

Oh and by the way, Nintendo requires every Virtual Boy game to throw up a warning screen

and a calibration screen for adjusting the focus before the actual game starts, and the

tune that accompanies the startup screen of Mario's Tennis is actually pretty catchy.

So Mario's Tennis is well…what you'd probably expect from a tennis game in the 90s.

You can choose from a singles or doubles match, choose a game mode, difficulty and length,

then pick from a cast of 7 characters.

Kinda odd that they left Bowser out but still kept Donkey Kong Jr. in.

After that it's standard tennis videogame fare, you move around and hit the ball back

and forth.

The camera is placed slightly lower than your average tennis videogame though, to emphasize

the use of the 3D effect to judge where the ball is headed.

And I'd say it's a decent effect even if the court itself looks pretty plain.

It's actually kinda hard to play this game in 2D, so make this one of the games that

actually makes good use of the Virtual Boy's 3D effect.

You use A for hitting regular shots and B for lob shots, as well as being able to adjust

the direction your ball goes with the D-Pad right as you make a shot.

Man, I remember choosing Easy but Toad is sorta kicking my butt.

That's what happens when you can't accurately judge distance in 2D.

Go figure.

If you hit the ball at the peak of its height then you'll be able to hit a fastball.

If you manage to score with a fastball your character does a little unique win animation.

Neat touch.

Surprisingly, after an intense 20-minute match, I actually managed to catch up and beat him.

Good game, Toad, now get out, I don't want you eating up any more of my recording disk

space.

All in all though, it's still a pretty basic tennis game.

Serves its purpose as a simple pack in title, but it might be a bit too simple for most

people's tastes.

I mean, I guess you could say that Ultra Smash is a return to the series' roots!

Next up is what many consider to be the hidden gem of the entire Virtual Boy lineup: Virtual

Boy Wario Land, the second installment in the Wario Land series.

I completely dig 2D platformers so let's check this one out.

The story begins with Wario taking a rest after landing in the Awazon river basin

Anyway, Wario spots three creatures carrying treasure towards a waterfall.

He follows them to a treasure vault but a trap door sends him deep underground.

So now it's up to Wario to climb his way back up and get the treasure.

Since this game is only the second installment in the series, it shares more gameplay similarities

with Super Mario Land than the later Wario Land games.

There's Question Blocks floating around, you grab coins and power-ups, so on and so

forth.

But of course, this is still a Wario Land game, so Wario has his own unique moves like

the famous shoulder bash, being able to throw stunned enemies as well as ground pound.

Power-ups hidden in blocks also give him special abilities like having a stronger shoulder

bash or being able to shoot fire.

The main objective is simply to get to the end of the level, but you also have to find

a key within the level that gives you access to the exit, so exploration still plays a

role here.

In addition to that, each normal level also contains an optional hidden treasure, and

collecting all of them nets you a different ending, which I won't spoil here.

I mean, it's not like I haven't actually beaten the game yet or anything euhfhhgfhefh

Finding all of these collectibles often requires you to search for every nook and cranny for

hidden doors and passageways, or have a specific power-up, which might make it hard to nab

everything during your first time through.

There isn't any sort of level select, and the only form of backtracking is to literally

ride the end level elevator back to the previous level, so uh, yeah it's virtually impossible.

The level design is pretty much what you'd expect from a typical Nintendo platformer.

But seeing as this game IS on the Virtual Boy, there are some neat little 3D gimmicks

being used here and there.

For starters, Wario can jump between the foreground and background with special blocks for more

exploration.

Enemies can also swoop in from the background or move between planes.

It's the stuff you'd expect from a modern 2.5D platformer but the ideas here are still

implemented pretty well and the game looks pretty fantastic in 3D.

Well, minus all the red…but y'know you get my point.

Okay man that's just super cheap.

Occasionally we stumble across a boss in between levels and the game's first boss is this…uh…

...creature...that keeps throwing a ball and chain towards Wario.

You're supposed to jump on its head when he's in the foreground to hurt him but it's

guarded by that ball and chain and it's actually quite hard to land a precise hit

since Wario's jumps are actually a bit on the floaty side.

Kinda ironic considering…y'know, he's Wario.

I died a couple of times on this boss but managed to get lucky enough to finish him off.

And with that we get a

WEEEHEE COIN PARTY

Overall, this game is a classic case of a fantastic game being released on a poor console.

It's definitely a game that Nintendo should officially re-release someday.

I know some might say they're not doing it since they're trying to sweep the Virtual

Boy under the rug but considering their jokes about it in recent years I don't think that's

the case.

"These games are great!"

Moving on, we have a third party game, V-Tetris!

This is a Japanese-exclusive release, and is not to be confused with 3D Tetris, a completely

separate game where you drop blocks in a 3D space at less than 10 frames per second

what a great fun video game.

Okay never mind, that let's just go back to V-Tetris, which is actually a licensed

variant of the original Tetris, developed by Bullet Proof Software, the same developer

that made the other Nintendo versions of Tetris.

So let's see what the Virtual Boy allowed them to do with the traditional Tetris formula.

Really?

That's how fast lines fall on the lowest difficulty?

What is this, Baby's First Tetris Game?

Never mind, I'll just turn the speed up to make things more normal.

So the first thing you'll notice when playing this is that: yes, this is literally just

2D Tetris.

Which sorta begs the question of why this is on the Virtual Boy in the first place,

seeing as the only things that are 3D here are the line clear effects and the background

images.

Well, aside from the score-based Type A mode and clear-based Type B mode we all know and

love, this version adds in a Type C mode.

It's essentially Type A, but this time around the play field is cylinder shaped, and can

be scrolled through with the shoulder buttons.

It certainly makes for an interesting challenge, since lines are still defined by the current

portion of the playfield you're looking at, so it leads to some interesting choices

in how to set them up.

It's fine as a new game mode, but the 3D usage here is still super minimal.

Also, the music selection in this game is all new and completely different, so the iconic

Tetris theme is nowhere to be seen.

And the new tunes just simply didn't grow on me that much.

In the end, this is a serviceable but completely unnecessary port of Tetris to the Virtual Boy.

Maybe it would serve a bit more purpose if the Virtual Boy link cable actually came out,

but who would want to look into an isolated 3D headset just to play single-player 2D Tetris?

Ugh never mind, let's just move on to the final game, which is…

Mario Clash!

The only Mario action game on the Virtual Boy, as well as a bit of a special case, seeing

as it is a pretty unique reimagining of the original Mario Bros. game.

Side note, but this is also the only Virtual Boy game that I have the original box and

manual for, so it's something I guess.

Hooray I can't read Japanese!

The game has about as much story as difficulty in Kirby's Epic Yarn so let's get right

into the gameplay.

Each level consists of the foreground and background and has three different height

levels, with pipes connecting them all together.

Your goal, like in Mario Bros. is to defeat all the enemies, but this time you do that

by hitting them with shells from infinitely spawning Koopa Troopas.

You can hit enemies on the side through pipes or toss them across the two planes, but not

all enemies can be defeated with the same methods.

For example, these Spike Tops can be killed with any method, Thorny can only be defeated

by being hit from across the stage, these Sidesteppers require you to hit them in the

side first to expose them THEN hit them from another plane etc.

And of course you also have enemies that jump across the stage, fire projectiles at you,

it's a completely wild assortment.

In every stage, the level layout and how the pipes are connected changes, so you often

have to think carefully on how to approach certain types of enemies.

And if you take too long, a fireball starts to chase you down just like in Mario Bros.

I do think that this unique take on the Mario Bros. formula provides a really interesting

challenge, but one might say it's a bit TOO challenging.

The jump physics are nowhere near as wonky as the original games, but this isn't Super

Mario Bros. we're talking about, and occasional missteps will happen.

And of course, in the later levels, the difficulty ramps up REALLY high.

I tried my hand at one of the later levels, and level 20 has you in a level with ice physics,

dodging jumping Paragoombas, falling icicles and snakes that hatch babies.

LEVEL 20!

Out of the 40 levels you can start from at the beginning and the 99 levels in total that

are actually in the game.

This game's difficulty is relentless, which y'know is befitting since it's an arcade-like

title but dang guys, come on!

Still though, this is a pretty unique Mario game at its core, and it's a shame that

it never got rereleased.

If you're a Mario fan, especially if you adore the original Mario Bros., you should

definitely give it a try yourself.

And that's it for the Virtual Boy!

At least, for now.

It's your textbook example of commercial failure, but in its game library there are

still a few hidden gems that deserve to be experienced, so I hope Nintendo actually puts

Virtual Boy games in their Virtual Console lineup in the future.

As for the actual system itself, it was simply way too ahead of its time.

The 3D display concept sounded great on paper, but the cost of related technology at the

time led to an extremely sloppy execution.

At least the 3DS finally managed to take this concept and expand on it further.

As for actual virtual reality?

Well, seeing as it's still in a really early phase of growth, I don't think Nintendo

will be doing anything major with it any time soon.

Nowadays, the Virtual Boy is pretty hard to come by due to its novelty status, but if

you're a hardcore Nintendo fan, I still think you should experience playing on an

actual Virtual Boy at least once in your life!

Despite its terrible reputation, it's definitely still a really fascinating gadget, and an

important part of Nintendo's storied history, reminding us all that innovation requires

taking risks.

It is also now your NEW OVERLORD ALL HAIL THE VIRTUAL BOY

Superman Prime Earth 15 Multiverse Crossover Teaser? Reverse Flash RETURNS? - The Flash Season 4 - Duration: 8:17.

10,000 rads critical mass remote they need to send that energy somewhere what

to wear or 15 or 15 is a dead earth breach it there now

what is good YouTube Woarstu here will a video on the flash season 4 so during

the latest episode of the flash episode 10 the trial of flash where we met the

metahuman could have fallout who was basically a walking nuclear bomb that

where the resolution to kind of stop him was 4-barrel berry to funnel around

fallout radiation upward so Cisco could vibe it to a another universe another

dimension so it's pretty interesting what happened because Harrison wells

came out with it earth 15 very fast which if you don't read the comic books

earth 15 is essentially a dead earth so when Cisco asked where he should vibe

the radiation to well tells him send it to earth 15 because earth 15 is a death

but if you think about it the multiverse is all kind of earth a difference to

each other so how could it be a dead earth with literally no survivors crisis

enough X that was basically dead earth but there was a lot of people there and

that might prompt you to wonder wiser 15 dead what was it like before and like I

just said considering the multiverse is crazy big and every earth is supposed to

be different there's gotta be some backstory to earth 15 so in the comic

books earth 15 was kind of paradise and crime was virtually non-existent on

earth 15 and the Super's that remained was largely respected for

their names their psychics their proteins and their masters so when our

15 wonder one is Donna Troy the battement mantle has been taken up by

the second Robin Jason Todd rather than Carol I kal-el the Superman title

belongs to Zod I know this is very odd and there's also a Kyle Green Lantern

and a female version of the atom's essica Palmer and they all work together

to keep the peace essentially and that's essentially their job but then it's

Superman a prime who shows up and literally destroys the whole planet now

you can guess where I'm going they're going with us but in the comics at least

earth 15 version of Green Lantern and Jessica Palmer

aka the atom escape the planet before it was destroyed by Superman prime so

there's no reason why the kind of arrowverse TV show earth

could have some survivors on earth 15 because you've got a thing when they set

the earth earth 19 then we see like the observer 18 man we see gipsy so there

you are indirectly settling up for later on this season so it's gonna be quite

interesting to see what happens later on there later on down line while the

reasons would could be because earth 15 is discovered in the first place because

some of the other Earth's in the DC heroes are in search of a hero

we all know from the arrowverse Ray Palmer ray is currently on DC legends

tomorrow which is largely about time travel so there's no reason that in

addition to in addition to time-traveling ray and the legends

couldn't also travel to a parallel universe such as Earth of 15 Barry and

Cisco could do it also so essentially they could be setting up a potential

crossover for a later season and there's no reason that why Tyler hoechlin who

plays the kind of TV version of Superman could play Superman prime because I know

and that's why I know that Marc Guggenheim infer that DC Warner Brothers

Sedley weren't allowed to use any Justice League characters but Superman

Prime is a completely different version of the kind of DC extended DC extended

universe version so he's nothing like that so potentially they could be

setting up by earth 15 crossover because it's a bit odd that Harrison wells knows

about it just like he knew about crisis on Earth X about Planet X I think

they're potentially setting up some kind of storyline that could use a Tyler hack

conversion of Superman Prime and have him reprise the role on flash just for a

brief cameo period it will be quite cool to explore another earth because we

haven't really explored many earth earth 3 we've not really seen it the only

earth where we really explore this earth - and also earth 19 but we haven't

really seen much of it so that's pretty interesting guys just a theory what do

you think do you think that could happen dizzyingly possible I think it would be

quite cool so there's also another potential storyline moving forward which

is an episode 15 there has been rumors coming out the supposedly the

reverse-flash is going to be returning maybe so there's a twitter handler

called discussion discussing films they imply that reverse flash is gonna be

returning for episode 15 and titled flash

time but I don't know how true that is because the actor matt has recently got

a recurring season-long role on a Netflix show but it all depends when I'm

gonna start filming that Netflix show because they will be filming episode 15

in the next few weeks so potentially he could return for this episode we already

know that the original original flash Jay Garrick is gonna be in an episode

Jesse quick is really good in my episode but I don't think Kid Flash what he

works will be because he is room ly confirmed to be in legends tomorrow

well at least going to be on a handful episodes I mean I I originally said that

five five four or five months ago so yes I did say that before everyone else and

though everyone else is claiming the rights to they said it but no we

theorized that you can go look back at the video I was literally the first

person to say that wally was going it to legend tomorrow cuz most my theories

come true and they've got Prometheus right I've got a saboteur I've got a

vigilante right I'll actually get everything right but this is just

concept just a theory so my guys do you think Superman Prime come into a

arrowverse crossover with Superman and they Superman Prime they can potentially

go to earth 15 and see what it's like because it would be interesting I mean

you can't name drop nerf and then not go see it and also in episode 15 it would

make sense if it was a speedster based episode called enter flash time where

it's all the species trying to figure out what's Barry Speed Force programming

language was when he first came at Speed Force and obviously reverse-flash always

likes to be the smartest person in the room so if anyone's gonna trigger it or

figure it out it's gonna be reverse flash because obviously if it's gonna

make sense it should be the reverse flash that's still inside the Speed

Force he is the most intelligent speedster we have ever met Harrison

wells is very clever but I don't think it's gonna be a Harrison wells person

because it's gonna have to be someone who spent a long time in the Speed Force

obviously we found out this week's episode that Barry what Barry came out

when he came out the Speed Force said I didn't do something I didn't kill him

obviously Barry didn't kill Clifford Dafoe aku

thinker so I think a lot this before long it's about Speed Force language is

gonna come back and be plot points going forward and it's gonna be quite

interesting and obviously once they figure out what is speedballs language

means they can actually find out what this enlightenment that the mechanic and

clifford Defoe attacked gonna try to do so guys let me know what

do you think about this kind of super Prime Superman prime theory do you think

it's cool and do you think reverse fast will be in episode 15 because we can't

have a season of flash without the reverse flash I'm not really gonna

include the cameo role during the crossover because crossovers are

standalone I don't really mean anything for the overall development anyway guys

please like Scott and comment I will be trying my best to get more flash arrow

laser tomorrow when it comes back and Supergirl videos out as I've been doing

too much Marvel stuff and recently on the channel but it's just due to

scheduling time and having time to make videos but I love making flash videos so

I'll be trying to make more for you guys anyway please like subscribe and comment

as that would help the channel grow massively and it would mean that you'd

love the videos so guys join team war stew and we will catch you in another

video guys and very soon at catch ya later

10 small YouTubers you should watch. - Duration: 4:09.

Hi friends, Small youtube is really important to me.

Not just because I am a small youtuber but because it's been such a formative space

for me.

When I started watching a lot of youtube in college it was this great space for weirdos

making weird things, it was this refuge from my everyday life where i could finally fit

in.

It was a place to be experimental and creative and explore ideas that were ill conceived

and unprofitable and super cool.

And for the most part, that wild-west-of-weirdos sensibility has stuck around in the small

youtube community.

It's where I've made most of my art and most of my friends since 2011.

And i think now more than ever small youtube needs a celebration.

So i want to point you of some of my favorite creators who are under 10,000 subscribers

but who are making really cool stuff.

Ohheyitsdiamondnater.

I first came across Diamond through one time stories, which was this awesome project by

another small youtuber, Leslie Datsis that shaped a lot of what I make today.

Diamond is a really fun storyteller.

Like if you like evelyn from the internets, you'll like diamond.

And she just came back to youtube after a long break so it's the perfect time to subscribe.

Sophie jerome—is so precious and must be protected at all costs.

She makes these really clever, earnest, self deprecating videos that I'm just obsessed

with.

It just feels like chatting with a kind friend.

I may be biased on this one but zentouro is a channel about climate change and environmental

activism that quickly became my favorite educational youtube channel even before we ever met in

real life.

They're easy to understand, they're beautifully edited and they're super important right

now.

Another one i'm biased on because Nicole is a wonderful friend of mine, and so many

of my videos have been inspired by her videos and vice versa, so we have this never ending

content loop of mutual admiration, but Sweeneysays is one of the most interesting people i know,

and I love hearing her stories and her thoughts, and the only thing is that I wish she would

make them more.

And now, for a couple of white dudes Mike Egan of eganworks is like a very talented

video editor, super witty, and he's also a vocal advocate for net neutrality, which

is important.

We need more of those.

Jon Aitken of jonbehere has the most absurd style of humor.

He's like if 2012, 2013 tumblr came to life and i'm obsessed with it.

Okay white dudes over, but I bet you didn't think that I watch caucasian men talk on the

internet.

You're wrong.

Susie of Haida Life i found through a video I made about language where she commented

that she's learning the Haida language to reconnect with her native heritage.

On her channel she talks a lot about native culture, and i've learned so much about

it from her.

Mynameismarines is one of the few booktubers i watch regularly, but i will watch her talk

about books I haven't even read or planned to read, which speaks to how thoughtful and

engaging her videos are.

Nirali of FireWordSparkler makes these really lovely, well considered video essays about

her various identities, and about media, and about how all of that shapes how she navigates

the world.

And finally Alexandria taylor I can't believe is even is a small youtuber because to me

she's such a central pillar of like, the youtube community in general.

She was instrumental in starting the women on youtube community and helping bring the

shine theory in practice to a whole community of femme-identified creators.

She also makes videos about disability and you can tell that she's a teacher from the

patience and kindness every one of her videos exude.

Please go check all those creators out, I'll leave a playlist of some of my favorite videos

of theirs in the end card and in the description, and in comments, tell me who some of your

SOME WAYS TO HELP REDUCE YOUR STRESS - Duration: 4:37.

Some ways to help reduce your stress

The single best way is what Adriana Heguy just said:  exercise.

Years ago, when I was talking with my therapist about depression she showed me a study that overwhelmingly demonstrated that EXERCISE is the single best way to treat depression and stress.   The other methods didnt even come close.

I always tell people:  A good mood is always a 30 minute run away!Exercise is the best way to treat these emotional issues.   Now, clearly there are exceptions.

Clearly there are people who cannot exercise.   Clearly there are people who suffer so greatly from some ailment that this isnt the case for them.

But for the vast majority of us, the truth is what many (who do not exercise and make excuses) deny: if you exercise just 60 minutes a day, five days a week, the results are so overwhelming that most people dont get it until they get it.

Whether you want this to be the truth or not, we are creatures that value appearance, so a healthy body mass helps self esteem.

Great exercise helps with cholesterol beyond just weight loss.   Consistent exercise reduces stress and is the best treatment for things like depression.  Exercise helps with sleep issues.   In my case, exercise did FIVE massive things:.

Cut 85 lbs from my body and improved my self esteem.  Its not shallow to want to look good (its shallow if youre a jerk about it).  I got the kind of positive attention from people that helped my self esteem (from being hit on to just looking in the mirror and seeing what I liked).

It adjusted my good/bad cholesterol massively.  I come from an obese family and my biological father died at 39 from a heart attack.  Im 39, and that number looms in my head.  It gave me a hobby I loved.  We all want and need healthy habits.  Mine gave me a hobby that was not only fun, but it connected me with other like-minded people who are now my friends.

It totally fixed my insomnia.  I now sleep a normal sleep schedule that I did not have even on Lunesta (a pricey sleep aid).  Lastly, it reduced (and continues to reduce) my anxiety.  I have serious anxiety issues and Ive been in psychotherapy for it for years.  In the last three years since loosing the weight, my anxiety is consistently under control, both from the above reasons and from the fact that I burn surplus energy that otherwise feeds the anxiety.

Along with exercise, you need a healthy diet.

They are important halves of the same coin:  exercise and diet. Get those in line and youll be surprised how much your life improves.

Its a shame that we live in a world of fads and quick fixes that feed our need for lazy solutions.

While there are problems that a healthy diet and exercise clearly cannot fix, there is zero doubt that those two greatly contribute towards a very positive, healthy and fulfilling life.

Blowing Up Movies: Antonioni's "La Notte" - Duration: 11:56.

Blowing Up Movies: Antonioni's "La Notte"

One of the movies great visionaries

Michelangelo Antonioni.

Most movies celebrate the ways we connect with one another.

The films of this master mourn the failures to connect.

In the empty, silent spaces of the world he has found metaphors that illuminate the silent places of our hearts.

And have found in them, too, a strange and terrible beauty

Austere, elegant, enigmatic and haunting.

Ladies and gentelman, Mr. and Mrs. Michelangelo Antonioni.

Michelangelo Antonioni was a great director.

Very artistic, based on long shots, style of italian filmmaker,

which emphasized the reflective form of his movies,

to this day remains an inspiration for the next generations of cinema admirers.

And if we're talking about intriguing "Blowup",

or about reflective "The Passenger",

Antonioni's works, despite a very demanding construction,

still remains as the topic of new analysis and interpretations.

Antonioni gained publicity for "L'avventura", which broke the schemes,

and caused great controvery at Cannes Film Festival.

"L'avventrua" became also first part of the trilogy

about man's loneliness in a increasingly industrialized world.

The next parts,

"La Notte" and "The Eclipse",

broadened reflection on this subject.

Also the director's next movie, "The Red Desert",

was an attempt to widen this motif,

which, according to many, Antonioni's series

shouldn't be considered as trilogy, but rather a tetralogy.

However in this video I would like to focus on "La Notte",

one of the movies in history of the cinema, that mourns most beautifully the tragedy of disintegration of feelings.

This dreary reality we get to know through experiences of Giovanni (Marcello Mastroianni)

and his wife Lidia (Jeanne Moreau),

who are wandering around this world

in the hope of breaking the apathy, which overwhelms feelings.

They try to break the state of constant dispassion through entertainment:

by visiting the nightclub,

or taking a part in big party at house of the great industrialist, Gherardini.

However, everywhere they encounter the symptoms of world's transformations.

The world and feelings of their youth is passing by forever.

During the talk with Gherardini

Giovanni, popular author, claims that writing books is a relict of past.

- A writer of today constantly wonders,

if writing isn't some sort of irrepreisble,

but outdated instinct.

The lonely craft of painstakingly joining one word to another,

that absolutely can't be mechnized.

- Are you sure of that? - No.

But you idustrialists have the advantage

of constructing your "stories"

using real people, real houses, real cities.

The rhythm of life today is in your hands.

Perhaps even the future.

This thread is underlined in the death of a friend of the marriage,

Tommaso, great literature admirer.

However, metamorphosis and the dissolution of a certain world is best seen

in the dispassionate relationship of our protagonists,

who seem to have connection only by attachment and a certain doze of nostalgia.

There is in "La Notte" scene, when Lidia goes for a walk.

The woman lets herself carried away, and it fills her with past vitality.

Like a playful teenager, she dodges next posts on the sidewalk.

However in the middle the play is interrupted by the presence of an old lady,

which reminds Lidia that she is no longer in age for such frivolous behavior

and immediately brings her to the level of prior seriousness.

Antonioni's craft is best seen in such scenes.

At first sight, the recalled scene seems trivial,

but after the screening of the whole movie, we realize its meaning,

how it developed the psychoogy of the character,

the screen world and - above all -

how it broadens the main idea of the movie.

Italian director's cinema is full of such inconspicuous,

yet extremely significant and marvelously staged details.

Giovanni remains completely indifferent in relation to his wife.

He finds excitement in other places and in the characters of other women:

in the hospital in a passionate embrace with the patient,

in the nightclub in a surprisingly flexible image of dancing black women,

and finally, in Gherardini's house, in an attempt of making a love affair with Valentina, host's daughter

(in this role - Monica Vitti, actress also known from other parts of Antonioni's tetralogy)

- Can you find someone to play with me?

- Won't I do? - No, too old.

- I'd get younger playing with you.

- I don't want to get younger? - Why?

- Tell me why. - See? I'd have won.

Their first encounter is, so wonderfully staged by the director,

is full of a subtle and ethereal flirt.

- Good shot, but too timid. - You're right.

However, attempt to revive feelings is a delusion,

especially in the context of Lidia.

It's confirmed in the final, probably one of the saddest in cinema history,

scene of conversation between the married couple.

Giovanni's words remain only empty, mechanical phrases of hope.

He's not able to revive his past feelings,

because he can't even recognize them anymore.

The next part of the video contains details of the movie's ending. You've been warned.

Spoilers.

After emotional night Giovanni and Lidia leave the Gherardini's house

and they decide to sit on the grass

to watch the dawn of new day, accompanied by music.

They start to talk.

Lidia reveal to her husband, concealed all night information about Tommaso's death.

They both mention the past, youthful elations,

when they're entangled in a romantic triangle with their now dead friend.

It turns out that Tommaso, like Giovanni,

was in love with Lidia, but she chose the aspiring writer.

Only here Antonioni shows us the whole baggage of feelings and dependence of the couple.

Throughout the whole movie we hardly know what exactly the attachment of the marriage is due to.

The final scene fills these gaps

and presents a full picture of their relationship.

- But if you say all this,

if you wish you were already dead,

it means you still love me.

However, the real tragedy is still ahead of us.

Lidia pulls out of her purse carefully stored,

full of exaltation letter, and reads its content out loud.

"When I awoke this morning, you were still asleep.

As I slowly emerged from my slumber,

I heard your gentle breathing,

and through the wisps of hair over your face

I saw your closed eyes

and I could barely contain my emotion.

I wanted to cry out, to wake you up,

because you slept so deeply, you almost seemed lifeless."

Giovanni carefully listens to every word,

we can see that he identifies with the author,

nostalgia embraces him, but he cannot recognize the writer.

To the question:

- Who wrote that?

Confused Lidia responds:

- You did.

Exactly at this moment the women seems to finally understand,

that from the emotional bond that connected them,

there is nothing left

and sustained illusions are completely vain.

Almost mechnically, Givoanni tries to hold up the only certain thing in hs life,

he decides to revive past feelings

and twith passionate kisses he attempts to convince his wife to devotion.

Now Giovanni is trying to convince not only himself, but also Lidia.

He usses force to possess his wife, and in this way to revive their relationship.

- No.

I don't love you anymore.

And you don't love me either.

- Be quiet.

- Say it.

- No. I won't say it.

The woman finally cease talking

and the camera leaves, showing panorama of the morning dawn.

This wonderful, ambiguous ending leaves the viewer with an obvious question

about the further fate of the marriage.

Did Lidia fell silent and gave up to her husband, because she eventually succumbed

under the weight of the hopelessness of her fate?

Is Giovanni still capable of convincing his wife to love,

which, moreover, he must first mechanically arouse in himself?

What exactly is the meaning of the final shot of the dawn:

the beginning of the end, or the end of the emotional darkness of the night?

Despite the passage of years, "La Notte" remains one of the most interesting movies about disintegration of feelings.

Masterfully conducted and acted final scene complements the image of emotional desolation.

Despite the apparent withdrawn of characters,

"La Notte" is full of emotions,

perfectly showing the work of Antonioni,

who used raw, but precisely stylized form

to discover the whole spectrum of emotionality.

It's definitely worth to reverse to such a cinema, and such a director.

Only recollections.
