Greetings Earthlings!
Welcome to the Madqueen Show!
I am your host, the MadQueen
Oh today's menu we're back at our sofa to talk about Star Wars the Last Jedi and
before I start I must say that this will contain spoilers, so if you didn't watch it, this
video may not be for you, and you really should stop whatever you're doing, like watching
this video and go to watch Star Wars
I'm really shocked that this film had a lot of negative reviews, sometimes I feel
like I watched a different film than the rest of the universe, and I obviously don't say
that like my taste is universal and if someone disagrees with me is wrong, but the reasoning
behind people not liking this film is something that I fail to understand
Star Wars films are like the force, if you try to rationalize them too much they become
something really absurd, full of midiclorians and shit and one of the reasons we like Star
Wars so much is because most of us watched it when we were kids, and when you're a
kid and you watch a film you just enjoy it without asking too many questions, you ask
them later, you don't spend the film trying to get a sense out of it beyond the plot,
or comparing it with other films, because you're a kid and didn't watch many yet,
and actually that's the way I watch films, I try my best to watch every film like I'm
a kid again, enjoy it and then ask the questions later
And I know a lot of people who don't do that because they feel the need to outsmart
the film and the filmmakers, and I find it really absurd, because this makes you miss
the experience and that's a pity
In general, I love the work that JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson are doing with this new trilogy,
I think that they completely understood what Star Wars is about, and what made the original Star Wars films so
great and they are trying to replicate it, but at the same time the background is completely
new so the story resonates with the world we live in now, but as background and not
as base, which is something that Science Fiction always does, it takes place in the future,
or in the past in this case, because it happened a long time ago in a galaxy far away, but
it's a futuristic setting, it takes a futuristic setting to talk about universal themes and
themes that belong to the times when the work is written, science fiction has always been
a vessel to discuss the most controversial subjects with metaphors that make them easier
to digest, emotionally speaking, and that's what makes science fiction so fantastic, you
can watch or read it like a kid and enjoy it, and later be an adult again and you'll
have a lot of questions to make about what you've seen there
Unless you try with Stanislaw Lem's Solaris, there's no way you can enjoy that as a kid
No human way
The thing about Star Wars is that this is something that hasn't been done before
We're talking about a story that started more than 30 years ago and it's so popular
they don't try to explain it to you anymore, you don't need to be remembered who is Leia,
who is Luke and who is Han, this is something you already know
it's not like every new Batman when you need to see again
how Wayne's parents got shot, we moved on from origin stories, they tried with episode
1 and they failed miserably, but at this point we're in, the Star Wars universe is a universe
with historical context
And you see an old Star Destroyer that crashed on Jakku and that's all you need to remind
that 30 years ago there was a war against the Empire, and who won the war, and also
what was lost in that war
So, we have a sci-fi setting with historical context and this historical context is something
that lives in the popular imagination the same way your own history lives, this
makes the new trilogy so special, and if someone says that this was already done with Star
Trek, I know there are Trekkies hidden out there, I see you, Star Trek's story doesn't
live in the popular imagination, people know what's the Enterprise is and who is Spock,
and a few more details, but that's it
So, we have a scifi setting with historical context and then we have the typical good
vs evil story, and in the original trilogy we had the Empire that were Nazis, with their
Empire outfits designed to look like SS uniforms, which are the quintessential bad guys, but
we're in the times we're in now, and no one is afraid of Hitler anymore, now we're
afraid of the 20 something white guy that collects Hitler memorabilia and is a Hitler
fanboy and cheers sig heil with a Tiki torch in his hand, and the rest of the time complains
like an emo kid that his voice is not heard loud enough and this is Kylo Ren
Kylo Ren is a very interesting character with a very interesting development, way more interesting
than any other character in the new trilogy
And he's actually way worse than Darth Vader, and I don't mean in a sense of powerful
in the force, but in a sense of how he's portraying a reality we're living now, he's
the 20 something white man that knows the story, knows the atrocities that the Empire
did in the past, looks at them and says "This
We need to repeat this
But, you know, worse"
That's the real boogie man, who cares about the Supreme Leader?
He was only there to give Ren a purpose and he dies like puf!
Gone
No background for the character, no origins, no info, no need for that
All the speculation that went on about who he really was before the film was out, that
was amazing, and long
No need for that
Snoke doesn't need a context, he is the context himself, that goes on to make the
character of Ren evolve and when he's not needed anymore he's out
And he's out in a very interesting scene where Ren offers his hand to Rey and says
"No light side, no dark side, just us"
He says he wants to be a renegade, but keeping his ideals of "bringing order to the galaxy"
so what kind of renegade is that?
And Rey is like, "well, Ren, I don't care how much you twist your narrative, you're
still a neo-nazi, so take your proposal and shove it up into your butthole"
Leading the New Order is not a way to be a renegade so, Ren, my love, to stop being a
bad guy you need to stop doing the things that a bad guy does, just changing the words
you use to refer to yourself doesn't change a damn thing
And then they fight, and then the Kyber crystal inside the lightsaber explodes and I just
loved that detail
Because this new trilogy takes a lot from the expanded universe, like this or the weapons
that the Red Guard use, and I found very funny that the weapons that the New Order use are
prepared to fight a lightsaber, when Episode 7 starts with the alleged extinction of the
Jedi order, so what would they need it for?
Another thing that I loved from The Last Jedi is how they keep the sense of humor of the
original trilogy, that is something that was lost in episodes 1, 2, and 3, and I don't
understand the criticism about the humor in here like, didn't you watch the original
trilogy?
"Would it help if I got out and pushed?"
The original had a lot of jokes, mostly from Han, with the first 25 minutes of Return of
the Jedi you could make a comedy show pilot film, "How are you doing, Luke?"
"You know, as usual" "That bad, huh?"
As I said before, maybe we watched a different film, because I remember the original having
a lot of comedy, and now Han off the humor to Poe Dameron…
I know that was an awful joke
Well, at least Poe Dameron is a better comic relief than Jar Jar Binks
But humor also evolves, this is a film for another generation and it needs a humor for
them, and the scene of the iron was brilliant
Maybe Domhall Gleeson was a bit exaggerated for my taste, being such a good actor that
can be so scary, but we don't want Hux to take the dramatic weight of Kylo Ren, so I
understand the intention but I'm not totally convinced
Same with the scene where Leia uses the force to get back to the ship, I understand that
they want to explain how powerful Leia really is, but I'm not quite convinced with the
way this scene turned out
And then, Rey
The character of Rey also takes a lot of criticism that comes from past film for being able to
beat a trained emo kid Sith Lord without no training in the force at all, well, the thing
is that the force is a gift
You can train it to perfect it, but it's a gift, is not something you learn
And some people are more gifted than others
Can you imagine in real life a 4-year-old kid playing the piano with no training in
music beyond hearing his father play?
No, that's impossible!
Well, that's Mozart
Wow, I can't believe that!
That's why you failed
Because, again, Star Wars films are like the Force
And the fact that you need an explanation of why Rey is so gifted is the reason why
we got midiclorians in the first place, because that's the wrong question, the Force is
something magical and mystical, but even being that way I fail to see how she facing up an
emo kid who just got shot by Chewie's Bowcaster, remember that weapon? That creates the magical
flying stormtroopers and Ren stands the shot without moving an inch, and then spends all
the fight with Rey beating the wound to numb it, I mean, he's severely wounded, how could
he stand a fight in that condition?
Beating the crap out of a severely wounded Sith is not such a big deal, they weren't
in the same conditions, Ren was in a clear disadvantage, again, did we watch a different film?
Anyway I still have the theory that Obi Wan helped her in that fight, but that's a different
story, the thing is that in The Last Jedi she's reaching her potential, and she's
really gifted, she's so gifted she dreamed all her life with the Jedi temple, so she
learns quicker, the same as Leia, we're told in past film that she has no training
in the force at all, even being Yoda's wish in his deathbed: teach what you learned to your sister
but she's extremely gifted and powerful, she can use the force to protect
herself in space and bring the Force soul of Luke to fight the New Order, a thing that
up to that point we thought that only Snoke could do
But she can
With no training at all
Because she's Carrie Fisher and I don't need more explanation than that
And, talking about Leia, I'm the only one who thinks that Leia and Holdo had a thing?
I think it's hinted with the way they treat each other, they really look like they were
lovers which I would completely understand, they're both the maximum level of badassery
possible
And Holdo's sacrifice, cutting the Supremacy Star Destroyer in two was just so badass oh
my god I love Laura Dern
So, in general, not counting the posh Mos Eisly Canteen casino scene, I liked the film
a lot, I won't put a number to this "like a lot" thing, I don't believe in ratings,
but I liked it a lot
I think Disney is doing a great job with this reinterpretation of Star Wars, and if I was
told that Disney would do that when they bought the franchise I wouldn't believe it but,
yes, great job
Yes, I'm doing this, extremely good job
But I was sold anyway when they hired JJ Abrams for the first film, that is also true
Well, folks, thanks for watching, please leave a comment and let me know what did you think
of The Last Jedi, I'd love to know your thoughts
See you in next videos and stay being amazing
