DAVID SCOTT: Every superhero has an origin story.

And Amy Van Dyken's started here, in a pool.

AMY VAN DYKEN: Felt I could do anything.

Felt I was invincible.

-This was... your refuge. -Mm-hmm.

The pool used to be where I would go if I was feeling

sad, or angry, or whatever, and I could just stare

at the black line and I could swim laps

and be awesome.

SCOTT: But since the accident that left her paralyzed

from the waist down, Van Dyken only rarely gets

in the water now.

She once swam the length of this pool in 10.4 seconds.

On this day, just getting her body up and out of it

and back into her chair

took nearly five, painstaking minutes.

A lot of people say "get in the water."

-'Cause you feel light. -From the buoyancy.

From the buoyancy. For me, I hate the water.

I feel heavy. I feel constrained.

I feel like I'm choking. I feel like I wanna cry.

I feel, like, helpless, and I feel like

"get me the hell out of here, now." I hate it.

GARAGE SALE SAT & SUN 8-4.

Luke took a right onto Wildernest Lane, passing the cardboard sign.

'They'll probably leave the damn thing there until it tears away and blows down the street'

he thought.

He came to a stop in front of a two story house, the driveway was lined with tables

full of items.

There was a couch and a dresser on the lawn, but Luke was only interested in smalls, things

he could buy cheap and transport easily - to flip online.

He didn't make tons of money doing it but he liked the extra cash, and more importantly

he enjoyed the hunt.

Luke made his way around the circular setup of tables and already had a few items in his

arm, a small skull ashtray, a backscratcher (that he'd be keeping for himself), and a

clay statue of a rhino.

He was flipping through some records with his free hand and noticed a black cylinder

next to the box.

Just then, the homeowner walked up and stood next to him.

"Find anything?" the man asked "Yeah, what do you want for these three and

the Wish You Were Here vinyl?"

Luke replied "Hmm... how about fifteen?"

"Twelve."

He quickly answered, looking him in the eye.

"Deal."

The man reached out his hand and Luke shook it.

"What is that?"

Luke nodded at the black cylinder as he was paying him.

"It's some cheap knock-off of the Amazon Echo but instead of saying Alexa, you say Lizzy.

You can just have it if you want it."

"I don't want you to do that, I'll give you a dollar at least."

"You know what?

I can't take any money for it.

My wife says the damn thing doesn't even work.

It's all yours."

The homeowner wrapped the wire around it and tucked it into Luke's arm.

"Awesome, man.

Thanks!

Good luck with the rest of your garage sale."

Luke walked back to his truck, tossed his loot onto the passenger seat, and drove away.

At around 8:30 that night, Luke finished a plate of spaghetti and cracked open a beer.

There was a game on, but it was the Mavericks against the Hornets and he didn't care about

either team at all, so he figured he'd relax instead of watching tv.

He grabbed the generic echo, plugged it in, and plopped back down into the couch.

"Lizzy!" he shouted, and took a swig of beer.

The black cylinder flashed a red light on it's side twice, but there was no reply.

"Lizzy!"

Luke tried again.... another 2 flashes, but nothing.

'Well I guess that guy was right' he thought.

Luke stood up and got his new record off of the kitchen table, at least he could rock

some Shine on you crazy diamond while he caught a buzz.

As he walked back into the living room, Lizzy spoke to him, and what she said sent a shiver

down his spine.

"Someone is coming to kill you tonight."

'What the fuck?

Is this some kind of joke?'

Luke stood in the archway trying to figure out how this was happening.

And she spoke again.

"Did you hear me, Luke?

Someone is coming to..."

He ran and dove at the electrical outlet, pulling the wall plug before she could finish,

and sat on the floor with his back against the wall.

His mind racing.

What is going on here?

Is this a walkie talkie situation?

Maybe the phrases are programmed into it, and a buddy was pranking him.

After a few minutes, Luke plugged it back in.

"Seventeen minutes."

Lizzy said as soon as she had power.

"Seventeen minutes what?" he shouted back "A man will be here.

He'll be trying to look into the living room window."

Luke stood and walked to the window.

Pulling the curtain to the side, he looked up and down the street.

He laughed at himself.

"This is fuckin crazy!

I get some gadget at a yard sale that talks and now I'm like Alex fuckin Jones, staring

out the goddamn window looking for lizard people!"

"Fourteen minutes, Luke."

"So you know my name, big deal!

Who is this?

Mark?

Bobby?

You somehow must have known I would go to that garage sale."

He didn't really believe that, but what else could it be?

He knew it wasn't alive or conscious, it had to be some kind of trick.

"Lizzy, what is my full name?"

Two red flashes.

"Lukas Walter Easton, born to Beverly and Philip Easton."

Luke smiled.

"Impressive but not mind-blowing.

Tell me something that nobody knows about me."

It was silent for a few seconds.

"When you were thirteen years old, your cousin was getting beat up by a few bullies from

the neighborhood, and instead of helping him, you ran away.

Eleven minutes."

He was dumbfounded, he never told anybody about that, he was so ashamed at his cowardice.

His cousin still had scars from that beating.

Luke couldn't deny that something supernatural was happening but needed more proof, he took

his half-empty warm beer and poured it into the sink.

"Lizzy."

He said, walking back into the living room.

"I need you to tell me something that is impossible to know."

He turned on the game.

"Who will win the Dallas Charlotte game?"

"The Hornets win 106-99."

She replied "Well, there's still an hour left.

Can you tell me anything else?"

"J.J.

Barea is about to tear his right ACL."

The game came back from commercial and Luke watched intently.

He kept pushing fast forward to make sure that he was live.

About a minute later, Barea was driving to the basket and stepped on another player's

foot.

He fell to the ground writhing in pain, grasping his right knee.

Luke's jaw almost hit the ground and he turned off the tv.

He was ready to hear more of what Lizzy had to say.

"So why is this guy going to kill me?"

"He's sick.

He's done it several times already.

He's going to cut your hands off."

"Jesus.

And what do you suggest I do, Lizzy?"

Luke asked, as he sat back on the couch.

Two red flashes.

"Defend yourself.

Shoot him while you have the chance.

If you don't, he will blindside you.

This man is stronger and more evil than you can imagine."

Luke stared up at the ceiling, wondering if he was going insane.

"I'm not going to fucking kill someone because an answering machine told me to."

"Seven minutes, Luke."

Lizzy said.

He got up and unplugged the black cylinder.

This was getting out of control.

He turned out all the lights and headed to his bedroom.

He decided that maybe going to bed early was the best thing to do, he could have a fresh

start tomorrow morning and figure out if he was losing his mind.

But as he lay there, all he could think about was Lizzy's warning.

How many minutes would she be at now?

How they hell could she know about the basketball injury?

What if she's actually right?

Luke jumped out of bed, wearing only boxers, and flung open his closet door.

He reached up over the highest shelf and grabbed the shotgun his grandfather had given him,

and then he got some shells from his underwear drawer.

'Just in case' he thought to himself.

He went back into the living room, plugged Lizzy back in, and sat back down on the couch.

"Lizzy."

Two red flashes.

"Yes?"

"Where is he?"

"He's approaching right now."

She said Sure enough, the silhouette of a man grew

on the curtains, being backlit by the street lamp.

The man had his hands on both sides of his eyes, trying to see past the curtains.

Luke sat frozen, the loaded shotgun across his lap.

"Shoot him, Luke.

You won't get another chance."

Lizzy spoke, in that emotionless cadence.

Luke raised the shotgun and paused halfway.

"I can't."

"Shoot him... or die."

Glass exploded outward as Luke fired through the window.

The man flew backwards a few feet and landed on his back, he was already dead by the time

Luke walked outside.

People in the neighborhood were coming out of their houses to see what was going on.

Some started screaming and others were most likely calling the police.

Luke knelt down by the man, his chest was completely destroyed but his face was unharmed,

it was his neighbor, Mitch.

Tears started pouring down Luke's face and he couldn't catch his breath.

Mitch was a friend and a great guy, they'd barbecue and drink beers together quite often.

Luke heard the sirens in the distance.

He stood up, went inside, and buried his head in his hands as guilt started to eat at him.

When the police showed up, Luke told them everything that had happened.

Of course, they didn't believe him, and he tried to get Lizzy to say something and prove

it.

However, all the black cylinder did was flash red.

Lukas Easton was arrested for voluntary manslaughter and was given a 14 month sentence because

while he claimed that his neighbor was going to be an intruder, he wasn't actually inside

the house.

The judge also ordered Luke to complete therapy sessions for his delusions involving the talking

machine.

The house next door that was owned by Mitchell Marlo was transferred to his next of kin,

his brother Steve.

Six months after the incident, Steve was living in the house with his family.

His wife wanted to expand and update the kitchen.

During the demolition, Steve found a secret compartment behind the stove, and in it was

a large suitcase.

Not having the combination, Steve pried at the corner with a crowbar until the lock popped

open, flinging the contents all over the floor...

Several vacuum-sealed bags of severed human hands.

Passover! || Mayim Bialik - Duration: 5:25.

- Passover is a major, ma-ajor Jewish holiday

that happens every spring

and we keep this Passover party going for eight whole days,

kind of like Hanukkah, but not.

Just because it's a major holiday that most Jews

and even a lot of non-Jews know about

doesn't mean you don't have questions.

I mean, heck, I still have questions.

And this is really exciting.

The company that makes the matzah

and the matzah ball mix and the Tam Tams

and even the Passover cereal

that I have eaten my entire life

is sponsoring this video.

So, Manischewitz is not only

the official sponsor of Passover,

they are the official sponsors of this video.

Yay Manischewitz!

So, let's get started.

Question one, what is Passover?

Great question.

Passover celebrates the Jews' redemption

from slavery in Egypt and their Exodus

out of that narrow place of oppression.

You can read all about it in the Book of,

you guessed it, Exodus.

Question two, how do Jews prepare for Passover?

You didn't think we just, like, celebrate

and enjoy the holiday, did you?

I mean, that would be crazy.

We have to prepare and we have to prepare really hard.

The preparation for Passover is basically

a month-long holiday in and of itself.

It involves the religious equivalent of spring cleaning

whereby we remove all hametz

which is leaven wheat, oats, rye, barley, and spelt,

from our houses.

Hametz, hametz.

It takes some serious effort

to get a Jewish house ready for Passover

all to prevent any grains from touching the surface

of our lives and our souls for eight days.

So this means for eight days, no bread, no pasta,

no pizza, no cake, no cookies.

We throw it out.

Just get it out of our lives.

Get out!

Oh, and also just to really kick things up a notch,

any leftover hametz that we find

hiding in the nooks and crannies of our lives,

the morning that Passover starts, we burn it.

We kill it with fire.

Just torch it.

(bomb exploding)

Serious business.

Very serious.

Burn it.

So, what do we eat if not those crazy grains?

Well, we eat lots of matzah.

That's right, matzah is a fairly pathetic,

crisp, crackery sort of bread product

that we eat for eight days.

It bakes flat because it doesn't have any yeast.

Poor matzah.

There are two main reasons why we eat matzah for Passover.

Tradition holds that matzah is very similar

to the kind of bread that our ancestors ate

when they were slaves in Egypt.

It is thus called the Bread of Affliction.

What it really afflicts these days

is your intestinal tract.

(laughs)

And also, when the Jews left Egypt for freedom,

they left in haste and they didn't have time

for their bread to rise so it kind of looked

like matzah we think.

We assume.

Side note, for tips on how to make things for Passover

that won't afflict your tummy

and don't involve lots of matzah,

go to groknation.com where I'm publishing

some of my favorite vegan Passover recipes.

Question three, so what do we actually do on Passover?

I'm glad you asked.

We really cut loose on Passover.

We drink lots of wine, then we sing crazy drinking songs,

we stay up late, and it's a gigantic party.

You think I'm kidding, but I'm not.

Woot, woot, Passover, Passover.

The way the Jews celebrate Passover,

even the least religious among us if modified a bit,

is with a formal meal called a Seder.

Seder means order because we're Jews

and we love order and lots of rules.

The Seder has 15 different steps.

And while many Jews cut out after the meal,

which in case you're wondering is item number 11,

traditional Jews do them all

and it can and does take many hours.

At the Seder, we read from this special book

called a Haggadah and we retell the story

of our journey from slavery to freedom.

We recall the 10 epic plagues

that God brought down to set us free.

We drink four cups of wine or grape juice,

and we sing drinking songs you can't help

but sing along with.

(singing in foreign language)

And even though Seders are long,

they are great for kids who stay up late enough

to experience them.

My children like to tell the Exodus story

using Playmobil figures.

Oh ,we didn't do Pharaoh.

It's very powerful to see them make

this ancient story their own.

We also always welcome non-Jews to our Seders

so that they can experience our cultural tradition

and our knack for storytelling.

We also like to show people how impossible it is

to pronounce certain ancient rabbis' names.

They're very long and very impossible.

Eliaz, Ella, Eliz, Azurier,

Azaria, as are ya, Azuriah.

Rabbi Tarfon. - Rabbi car phone?

(laughing)

- Passover makes me very nostalgic.

You know, we all have traditions.

We all have Passover memories.

Mine involve all of us sitting around a table

laughing and singing and eating traditional Passover foods,

a lot of Manischewitz products.

Those are the memories that my family has of Passover.

I want to hear your family's Passover

or Manischewitz memories.

They can be funny.

They can be poignant.

So, go to the link below.

Tell us your memories.

Manischewitz will pick their favorites

to share on social media.

And you will have the opportunity to win

a T-shirt just like mine.

From Manischewitz and my family to yours,

Happy Passover.

and go to my website groknation.com

The Complete Making of CRYSTAL | Behind the Scenes | Gliding Higher Ep 7 | Cirque du Soleil - Duration: 15:27.

So Crystal is the story of a girl struggling to find her place in society.

And ends up, you know, going out onto a winter pond

and then falling through the ice,

and in fact the whole show sort of transpires while she is under the ice.

She has a vision.

She goes into her subconscious,

which is a transformation of reality.

Allegorically speaking, it's this idea that sometimes to get

to sort of the most brilliant parts of ourself,

you have to go to these deep depths and get in touch with the sort of darker,

perhaps, side of ourselves but then bring that up to the light.

It seems like a very natural extension of Cirque du Soleil

to bring the performance to ice and to actually take ice disciplines

and push them further as Cirque always does.

Saint-Roch, Canada Week 3

Good afternoon to you all.

A pleasure to see you for week 3.

We're very happy with where we're at, I believe.

Cirque had already been exploring the possibility of producing an ice show

for a good decade at least.

And 1, 2, 3, 4.

5, 6, 7, 8!

About a year ago, we were approached

about revisiting that idea.

1, 2 and 3 and 4 and 5, 6, 7, 8

and 1, 2 and 3 and 4 and 5, 6, 7, 8. 1, 2…

We just begin the office,

which is the part that everybody is at their desk,

they're crazy, crazy automatic

and they're working so hard they're getting crazier and crazier.

That's the second rehearsal of that

and we just had 2 hours so far, which is pretty, pretty good,

so that tells me that I can add a lot of choreography, which is great.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 1…

Whoooo!

I need a D right there.

Super.

Today we're recording with Mathieu Désy,

who plays both electric and double bass.

You can get some great sounds from software programs,

but they will never match

what a real musician can bring.

In Crystal, we go into many different musical styles,

to illustrate all of the different worlds she dreams up.

So to find the show's unifying element,

we had to try a different approach. It's not done with the musical style;

it's really when you listen to the show's music as a whole that you're like,

"Oh, I get it. I've heard this theme before."

The theme comes back a few times in the show

to remind us that it's all happening while she's under water.

Week 7

So today, we are presenting an acrobatic presentation of where we are right now.

The goal of this is to make sure that everybody in the company knows where we are

in terms of evolution in the creation of the show.

Today, we have about a dozen performances for you.

I would say it's still a preliminary version, especially in terms of the acrobatics.

And music… Go!

Week 8

That's our new house.

It's like a real stage.

It's not an ice rink anymore, it's a stage.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It's getting real!

Welcome to block 2 and week 8!

As you've seen coming into the building, the set is here, yes.

Also, all other technical aspects are up in the air as well,

so lighting, video, sound as well.

Just one note: We're going 6 days a week starting this week, all right?

So longer hours, longer weeks.

We're going through a lot together. It's a process.

We're really pushing along with the numbers and we made a lot of progress.

Oh, nice!

So even though we're on the ice a lot,

I feel like every minute is very well spent.

Yeah, we're all hanging in there and we're all together.

You know, we got a good group here, so it makes things easier.

Right from the beginning,

the acrobats started to learn to skate

and the skaters started to learn some acrobatic moves

and from that moment, everybody realized how difficult

each other's strengths were and had an amazing respect for one another,

so it's been wonderful to see that happen.

My big challenge is to skate now.

I need to do juggling on the ice, but it's cool.

It's easy to do what you know.

What's harder is adapting to everything around you,

all the new elements—it's a nice challenge.

There's a number that I do with some of the other girls that's very,

like, modern and artistic that I, like, I'm like obsessed with, so.

It's, like, my little chance to show what I can do.

We've got a young guy

from Mongolia called Ochir

who'll be balancing on chairs at a pretty impressive height.

I start when I was 9 years old,

contortion and handstand.

On top, I just hear my breath, also heartbeat.

I feel all of that,

like all the way through you have to feel the chairs' legs, you know,

like, with your part of your body.

If you don't feel the chairs gonna kick you out.

Week 11

Meanwhile, we've taken things a little further.

We have interactive video,

which is video that reacts to the skaters and that changes

based on what they're doing.

I would say we've tried to create our own aesthetic.

Sometimes we go for more of a vintage,

1960s feel, something a little crazy.

But at other times, we go to extremes that are more futuristic,

with lines and a more minimalist look.

It has to be clear that all the worlds we explore in the show

are in her head.

So we thought, if we're dealing with memory,

memory is not linear;

it can jump from one thing to another.

So I would say each scene has a different influence.

Shading all the naked parts.

We're at the moment in the process where the artists start to learn

to do their own make up.

I have 14 pages of step-by-step make-up I have to learn.

So the biggest challenge for them is to being totally beginners in make-up

and to do like a professional type of make-up,

so we're showing them everything like how to hold a brush,

how to blend, how to be precise and everything.

Crystallize the world. There you go, guys.

There's a little Crystal for you.

For a lot of them it's very new stuff,

so they never did that before, especially guys.

This is really the first time we've ever done this.

For example, our eyebrows are uneven.

Never done before.

The make-up is the most stressful part. More than the show.

Week 13

Things are moving fast. We are almost ready to leave.

I think people are pretty excited about moving on to Lafayette, Louisiana,

so we'll have all of our tools with us

because we are missing a few pieces here due to the building configuration.

I'm someone new in a new place.

Lafayette, United States Week 15

A sharp tingle. A chill. A smell I've never smelled.

Steel. Glass. Tall. Taller.

The air is crowded.

I am something else.

We have a show now.

In St-Roch, we had maybe 70% of the show

because we didn't have the track and trolley,

which takes us from one place to another.

We had a run-through with an audience yesterday. It was a great dress rehearsal.

Everyone was in costume.

The show brings us inside the mind of our main character, Crystal,

and at that moment, she discovers her inner voice

and everything happens through her writing.

So I started with this idea of making marks, of writing,

to kind of see all the characters in her own words.

The hard work always pays off.

To develop something like this on this big of a scale of a show,

it takes the 12 to 15 hours,

it takes the coming in extra early, getting the warmup,

leaving a little bit later just to finish things up.

I can't wait to start this tour.

Montreal World Premiere

This is the world premier in Montreal.

So everybody is excited, everybody is

somehow perhaps nervous on some levels.

Since Lafayette we have been working on the fine tuning mostly

and also just

making sure the performers really are getting comfortable

within the parts they portray and the roles that they play.

I'm so happy about the show.

I'm so excited to be here for the world premier

and to see

all the work that's been now put in over so many months

and to see it all finally coming together

and really gelling and looking so beautiful.

I just can't wait.

We are super excited for tonight.

I feel like it's been a long time coming for us to get to Montreal

since we created the show

and it's going to be really exciting to see the reaction this evening.

Stressed—well, pressure is normal.

But no, it's okay— I think we're ready.

I think we've worked well, we've worked hard

these last several weeks and months.

And we've really turned up the heat in the last few days

so that it's—well, we'll try to be perfect for the premiere.

The public is the best part of the performance

because their reaction lets you know how you're doing

and I've done my job well if I can make somebody laugh

or cry or react in any way, so that's the best part.

I am incredibly, incredibly, incredibly proud and excited

to introduce Crystal to Montreal.

A year ago when we were writing it, we had storyboards

and scenarios and I feel like when I see the show now,

I see all of those storyboards, I see those first scripts

and that's an amazing feeling to have thought of like a little seed

of something and watch it come to life on such huge scale.

We're gonna remember this day for the rest of our lives

and we're spending it together and I'm really honoured

to spend it with all of you amazing, amazing, amazing people.

Everyone be safe, have fun.

This is the beginning of an amazing journey.

Thank you all. Merci.

I want to welcome the world of skating and skaters

because this is a brand new world and it was such a fun time to mix

and not to do a show that we've done,

like with circus people, but to have a new family.

We joined together with the acrobats

and I think we opened a door and I hope people will do more shows like that

and we had a blast and you guys you were so good,

I don't want to do any more shows in my life.

This is the end of my career. It's over! I'm done! I'm done. Thank you.

John Force: A Force of Nature | Real Sports w/ Bryant Gumbel | HBO - Duration: 1:40.

(ENGINE REVS)

JON FRANKEL: If somebody drew this up on paper,

you're going to get into a car that has 10-11,000 horsepower,

and is going to take you from a standstill

to 330 miles an hour, in 4-5 seconds,

covering 1,000 feet, would you say that's sane?

JOHN FORCE: Nope, but that car is the high of my life.

You know, I can joke, but it's better than sex.

FRANKEL: Welcome to the sport of professional drag racing.

On this day, tens of thousands of the faithful

have flocked to Gainesville, Florida.

Many to see this man.

A force of nature, and of the sport,

aptly named John Force,

who's won 16 national titles,

more than any other driver by far.

What does it feel like when you're about to race?

It's an adrenaline rush, but that gut ache

is in the pit of your stomach.

FORCE: You'll lay in bed at one in the morning,

just laying there, looking at the ceiling,

with that sickness, 'cause you know the next day,

it can go bad, or it can go good.

There is that potential, right?

One mistake could cost you.

-Bring it on. -Is that part of the appeal?

FORCE: Yeah, sure it is!

And... that's the thrill.

That's the high, that's the rush.
