Hi there, Vladimir here with another video about how to learn English
I think you've all heard the phrase:
There is no such thing as a free lunch
communicating the idea that it's impossible to get something for nothing
Get something for free
In life:
"To get one thing that we like, we usually have to give up another thing that we like."
The idea of no free lunch is used in economics to describe opportunity cost
Opportunity cost is a key concept in economics.
It refers to a benefit that a person could have received, but gave up
to take another course of action.
Okay, slow down, back up,
What does all this have to do with learning English?
Sure, let me explain
There is so much free information on the internet:
forums, podcasts, YouTube channels
teaching you English for free
A common comment viewers write below their favorite video is:
Thank you for teaching us for free
Free vocabulary videos, free grammar videos, countless pronunciation videos,
British English,
American English,
Australian English,
you name it,
it is all at your fingertips, readily available,
for free
But is it really?
There is no such thing as a free lunch
There is a trade-off,
There are opportunity costs
What is the opportunity cost?
what are you giving up?
And the answer is:
Your time
Your time
The most scares of resources
You are giving up your time,
you are wasting your time
We all know the expression:
Time is money
Even for the unemployed,
time is money
You could be using that free time for self-improvement, educating yourself
which in turn will help you get a job.
So the time you waste on YouTube looking for that
perfect language learning method,
1 simple trick,
watching video after free video
is the opportunity cost of giving up a better life, better job
a better job you could've had.
A better job you could've had if you didn't waste your time watching useless
free videos for hours on end.
How long have you been watching free English learning videos on YouTube?
How many weeks, months, years?
How much longer are planning on watching free videos on YouTube?
A few more years?
As long as it takes?
Nobody has ever learned a foreign language watching YouTube videos of people
calling themselves language teachers
Never ever
People get lost in all those YouTube videos,
When I look at the subscription history of some of my subscribers, I weep
When I listen to the advice some YouTube teachers give, I weep
When I read the comments some people leave on YouTube, I weep
Countless techniques, methods, hacks
Super fast and super easy
by people who have never mastered a foreign language themselves
Countless videos,
free videos YouTube keeps sending your way
suggested video, after suggested video
all free
No, there is no such thing as a free lunch
You pay with your time
time you could have used more effectively and efficiently
Used for something that could have actually helped you learn English by now
English, the only true global language
The gateway to better career opportunities,
with higher salary
It's the real cost of free
One would think that with all that free information on the Internet
people would be smarter and better educated.
There is too much noise on the Internet,
Today, anybody with a camera and a mic can become a teacher, guide, coach,
shepherd and the sheep follow
There is no critical thinking
The problem with all that free information, all those free YouTube videos is that
the information is random, disorganized,
There is nothing to keep all those random videos together,
no guiding principle to connect all into a coherent structure,
A to Z method
People get lost in countless YouTube videos with no sense of direction
Hours upon hours wasted watching useless YouTube videos,
subscribing to every English learning channel on YouTube,
waiting for that next video,
free video with some free advice,
free vocabulary and free grammar.
hours that could be used for something much more effective,
like reading, read a lot
and I suggest you start with my book
my book Virtually Native.
A book that gives you structure,
gives you a tried and tested method,
A working method
here is the proof, standing right in front of you
1 of the most common questions I've been asked about my book is
Why don't I give it away for free?
So many other youtube teachers are giving their books away for free
Why would I give it away for free?
Such a ridiculous question,
I'm not even gonna dignify that with a response
if I were to offer it for free
the perceived value of the book would go down dramatically
It would devalue the book,
you will look at that free PDF file and learn nothing
Virtually Native pdf is the top search for my book
I've been fighting book pirates ever since I published my books
but I know I am fighting a losing battle
Winning a battle or 2, losing the war
Soon or later there will be too many PDFs out there for me to stop
so if you wait long enough
there will be a free copy of my book.
Just wait a little longer
it is your time, your life
The thing is, it won't matter,
it won't matter all that much,
because
you won't learn much.
you will look at a free, poorly formatted pdf and learn nothing.
I often talk about the 99/1 ratio:
that only 1% of you watching this video will actually learn English
1% of you watching this video will buy and read my book,
and
I'm gonna be brutally honest,
and only 1% of you who read my book will actually learn something and apply my method
There is a whole chapter on Writing in my book Virtually Native
on how to write grammatically correct sentences.
yet some of those who have read the book still send me emails
riddled with grammatical mistakes
It is frustrating
but, you know what they say
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink
brutal honesty,
only 1% of you who read my book will actually learn something and apply my method
The remaining 99% will look for
magic hacks,
effortless techniques
3 fast steps
1 simple trick
and learn nothing.
Just so you know: there are no magic tricks in my book
So
the fight is for the 1% of the 1%
the 1% of the 1% who might even take my master class
which seems like quite a bit of money
but if you read and think about what I promise you
what I guarantee
The time and money saved,
but especially the time
Money is something you can recoup
Time on the other hand
you can never turn back time,
and like that it's gone
Successful people are successful because they value their time,
they don't waste time,
they spend money to save time.
Please, don't waste your time and read my book Virtually Native
which is available on Amazon and virtuallynative.com
