Meghan Markle Pregnancy: 15 Ways the Rules Will Change for Duchess When She Gets Pregnant.
Being a royal comes with rules and there will be plenty of new rules for Meghan Markle to follow when she gets pregnant.
Today, I'd like to talk about the way that Meghan's life will change after she conceives Prince Harry's son or daughter.
Right now, Meghan is learning the ropes. She's discovering that being a member-to-be of the royal family means acting proper,
considering the history and legacy of the royal family at all times... and doing her part to keep the monarchy alive!
Plenty of monarchies have fallen. Prince Philip, who is Queen Elizabeth II's hubby,
was born a prince in Greece before revolution toppled the Greek royal family in 1967.
England's monarchy continues to survive because Queen Elizabeth
and other royal family members make a point of giving the public what they want.
What the public wants is the fairy tale. They want to see royals who live in a way that they can only dream of.
Meghan has people helping her to learn "the job".
The royal family employs plenty of staff members who know the rules inside and out.
Also, Harry is surely doing his part to let her know what all of the expectations will be, before the wedding and afterward.
Meghan Markle didn't grow up royal. Her baby will grow up royal.
Now, let's talk about all of the ways that the rules will change for Meghan once she's expecting a baby.
15. A NANNY WILL BE MANDATORY.
Some Moms prefer to skip the nanny, but Meghan won't have that option. A part-time nanny will be mandatory for security purposes.
I wouldn't personally have wanted a nanny when I was taking care of my baby son.
I liked doing everything myself (it was fun!) and Meghan may feel the same.
However, she'll have no choice but to hand her baby over to nannies sometimes. It's royal tradition.
Did you know that Prince Charles often felt closer to his nannies than he did to his own Mom and Dad?
He said that his Mom was usually busy, "queening".
Also, he never really felt like he lived up his Dad's standards of what a son should be.
The problem with nannies is that they play parental roles, but they aren't really parents.
They do day-to-day care which allows them to form very close bonds with babies.
If Meghan doesn't want a nanny, she's probably not going to be able to get her way.
However, she may not mind getting help with the baby once it's born.
It'll give her more time for yoga, facials and shopping for fancy coats and dresses. Lots of Moms don't get this kind of free time.
14. SHE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE CERTAIN DECISIONS.
Meghan will be able to decide on her wedding gown, as long as she doesn't want anything too revealing or unusual.
According to a Town and Country story, she's already picked out a wedding dress designer
and she's actually been getting fitted for her gown at Nottingham Cottage, where she lives with Prince Harry.
When she gets pregnant, she may find that her power to make decisions dwindles.
Right now, she's still technically free. Until her wedding in a few months, she is still a single woman.
I don't think there's going to be a "runaway bride" situation here,
so let's talk about how her decision-making power will decrease once married and expecting.
First, she may not have any say in where her baby will go to school. Royal children follow specific educational paths.
There are schools that are appropriate for them and schools that they just don't go to.
For example, if Meghan wants her future son or daughter to go to school with typical kids who aren't rich and from pedigreed families,
because she doesn't want to raise a snob who's out of touch with the real world, she'll be out of luck.
Prince Harry and Prince William went to Wetherby school (fees around ten thousand bucks a term) until they turned eight years of age and then they boarded at Berkshire's Ludgrove School (and at Windsor's Eton College).
It's a safe bet that Meghan's baby will do the same when he or she is older, whether Meghan likes it or not.
13. PRIVATE THINGS WILL BE PUBLIC.
Things like christenings are going to be public events, rather than intimate get-togethers.
While royals do get some privacy behind palace walls,
they have to give the public the fairy tale and this means sharing their special moments with the world at large.
If Meghan wants to christen her baby after it's born,
she's going to have to accept that everyone on the planet will have access to her christening photos.
The concept of not christening the baby will be one that she can't even consider.
Royal tradition rarely changes. It's only when the royal family is forced to adapt due to threats to its survival that change occurs.
One example is when Diana passed away and the royal family had to make an announcement about it to appease the public.
The Queen didn't want to and then changed her mind, because British PM, Tony Blair,
told her that the public wasn't happy with the way that the royal family was handling Diana's tragic death.
So, Meghan's wedding photos are going to be out there and other sorts of private moments are also going to be fodder for the media.
When these private moments involve her baby, she may not like it.
12. BODYGUARDS WILL BE A FACT OF LIFE.
Meghan probably already has high security wherever she goes.
When she is pregnant with a royal baby, her security will become even more important to the royal family.
Meghan's dealt with some weirdness already, including hateful, racist messages on her social media accounts.
When people are able to post anonymously, they often type horrible things that they'd never have the courage to say face to face.
Harry had to step in and give the press a warning to stop badgering Meghan before they were engaged.
He was probably mortified that the woman he loved was being subjected to so much rudeness and meanness from the press and online trolls.
It's not a bad thing that Meghan will have security, but it would be strange to have some beefy security guys following you around while you were pregnant.
There might be times when she wants to be alone in public, just to browse through stores and relax.
She really won't be able to do that kind of stuff anymore when she's pregnant. She'll have security with her all of the time in public.
11. SHE MAY NEED TO TAKE RIDING LESSONS.
If Meghan isn't currently an equestrian, but she may need to become one to ride horses with her baby when he or she is older.
The royals learn to ride! The Queen is heavily into horses.
She loves to be around them, ride them and talk about them. She's been known to bet on the horses, too.
In the royal world, polo is a big deal. It's part of the aristocratic social scene in England.
Meghan has already attended polo matches where Harry was playing.
If she wants to fit in, she will need to schedule her riding lessons for after the baby is born.
Her baby is going to be taking these riding lessons as soon as it's old enough to do so safely.
Pregnant women usually don't go riding, although the risk to the baby in the first trimester is considered, "low".
According to an Elle story from May of last year,
Meghan has already expressed an interest in learning how to ride and she's been offered polo lessons by a buddy of Prince Harry.
There's no word on whether or not she took the offer.
10. OTHER PEOPLE WILL HELP RAISE HER CHILD.
It's been said that raising a royal child is a "group effort".
It's sort of like that "it takes a village to raise a child" thing, but on a royal, super-elite scale.
So, other people are going to be pitching in and making sure that Meghan's baby is learning royal ways and royal protocol.
She and Harry aren't the only ones who are going to be raising their baby and that's a bit unusual.
Meghan's probably also going to be "directed" in terms of which ob-gyn she sees while she's expecting,
which maternity outfits are most appropriate and so on.
You're probably not going to be seeing Meghan in skintight dresses that show off her baby bump.
She won't be going to a local free clinic for health care during pregnancy, either.
She's probably going to be seeing a physician located on London's Harley Street, which has the "best" doctors.
There's always the chance that Harry and Meghan will rebel and fail to take parenting direction from the other royals.
However, it's pretty unlikely. Royals need to stick together. The monarchy gets weakened when there is dissent in the ranks.
9. SHE WON'T BE ABLE TO WORK.
Her days of acting are over. When she's a Mom, it'll be all about propriety. She'll be under the microscope constantly.
Everyone will judge the way that she conducts herself while she's pregnant, as well as how she parents her baby after it's born.
She may miss acting, which she says she's already retired from,
but she'll need to focus on being a mom and doing charity stuff and walkabouts. I guess that's a form of acting in itself!
I'm not sure what pregnant royal women do all day. I expect they take very good care of themselves.
They don't need to show up at a set or an office or whatever.
They can sleep in late unless there's some walkabout and focus on good nutrition and gentle exercise.
I think being pregnant and being a member of the royal family would be a good thing.
Not having to work would be beneficial at this special time in life.
If Meghan gets horrible morning sickness, like Kate Middleton (the Duchess of Cambridge) does, she can simply rest.
She won't have to stress about calling in sick to work. That's kind of a luxury, isn't it?
8. SHE'LL NEED TO BE MORE MODEST.
Meghan has done some racy scenes on Suits and worn some revealing clothing.
Once she's a Mom, she'll probably be expected to be a bit more matronly.
Meghan generally dresses in a classy way anyway.
There are pics of her wearing tank tops and spaghetti straps but many of them may be photoshopped.
In general, her style is clean, fresh and modern, and classic enough to be appropriate almost anywhere.
She says that she dressed up all of the time on Suits and has worn plenty of beautiful and fancy clothes,
and that she prefers simpler pieces in her real life.
That makes sense, so expect sleek and modern maternity wear which isn't too ruffly or over-styled.
For maternity wear, she'll need to pay attention to the Queen's rules.
Queen Elizabeth II doesn't like members of the royal family to wear skirts above the knee.
She also hates colorful nail polish on royal women.
Meghan's also going to have to resign herself to wearing hats a lot, even if she thinks they are silly.
Hats and "fascinators" are what royal women are known for! This type of headgear separates them from the masses.
7. SHE MAY NOT GET ENOUGH TIME WITH HER KIDS.
Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, has gotten some criticism for failing to do a lot of royal engagements.
She does the least of the all of the royals, although she tends to get more attention than the others when she does show up,
mostly because she's super-glam.
To avoid this type of flack from the media, Meghan may try to put more events into her schedule when she's expecting.
She may feel pressure to get out there in public and support the royal family, even when she's not feeling too well.
When the baby is born, she'll face the same dilemma that Kate probably does.
She'll want to be at home, living in total luxury with her baby, rather than pounding the pavement on walkabouts.
She'll need to decide how much time to give to the public and how much time to give to her baby.
In the old days, royal babies were supposed to be raised by others, rather than their parents.
While times have changed, Meghan may find that she wants more quality time with her baby.
She may not get as much time as she wants.
6. SHE'LL NEED TO DRESS THE BABY A CERTAIN WAY.
Royal babies and children wear outfits which are quite old-fashioned. Nothing is ever tacky or too modern.
For example, you're not going to see a royal baby wearing one of those onesies with a funny saying on it.
When Meghan gets pregnant, she'll need to shop for baby clothes that are Buckingham Palace-approved.
Most likely, this type of shopping will be a pleasant activity for her.
It's possible that some palace courtiers will do her shopping for her. At the least, they'll point her towards the right retailers.
When her little son or daughter is old enough, he or she will wear knee socks, modest separates, and very good shoes.
If she has a boy, he'll need to wear a lot of shorts, like Prince George does.
Did you know that the "best" families in England almost always dress their boys in shorts?
Shorts on boys are considered a sign of good breeding. It's an upper-class thing.
If Meghan wants to put her baby in a pair of overalls from Oshkosh, because Meghan is an American girl, she may not be able to.
She'll need to dress her little son in proper shorts with dark socks and black shoes.
For a little girl, she'll be able to choose some exquisite dresses and accessories.
The Duchess of Cambridge likes to buy Charlotte's clothing at Amaia Kids and Olivier Baby and Kids.
She prefers Rachel Riley and Cath Kidson designs for George.
5. SHE'LL HAVE TO BOUNCE BACK IN THE PUBLIC EYE.
Most Moms have some quiet time to try and get their bodies and states of mind back to normal after having a baby. Not Meghan.
She'll be photographed with dark circles and baby weight, unless she lies low for a while in a palace, which is probably what I would do.
If she goes out, the paps will catch her at bad moments.
Paparazzi get more money for the unflattering "street shots" than they do for anything else.
The hunger for bad photos of celebs, including pregnant royals, is enormous.
Kate's been showing up places pregnant lately, in evening gowns. She looks amazing, but a bit weary.
Most people who are pregnant would prefer to watch Netflix in their sweats and have some snacks.
Same thing for Moms who have just had babies.
However, the demands of the royal lifestyle dictate that royal ladies need to show up for things.
We'll all be watching Meghan's bounce back after she has a baby, whether she wants us to or not.
4. SHE WON'T HAVE FAMILY PRIVACY.
Most of us lived with our parents when we were little. Our family homes were private places.
There weren't servants everywhere. Life will be different for Meghan and her baby. The hired help will always be there.
When Meghan's pregnant, there will be servants all over the place.
They sign agreements that stipulate that they can't share juicy gossip about their employers with the press.
However, some stuff may leak out anyway.
Would you like having all of the hired help in your home while you were expecting? I wouldn't, but everyone is different.
Most royal servants are trained to be seen and not heard, so they are an unobtrusive presence.
However, they are still hanging around, watching and listening.
Meghan's going to have to get used to the rules. Servants in royal households have specific duties and they want to do those duties.
If Meghan wants to do something, she'll have to make sure that a servant isn't being paid to do that thing.
She'll need to let the servants do their jobs. This may feel like a loss of independence.
3. SHE'LL MISS HER FAMILY.
Meghan lives in England now and she may miss her parents, who live in America.
She'll see them, but probably not as much as she wants to. She seems close to her Mom and her Dad.
Her parents are divorced, but Meghan stayed close to both of them. She didn't really pick a side.
Hopefully, her parents will come and see her a lot. Meghan will have more than enough money to fly them over.
Meghan's Mom is beautiful, just like Meghan is, and she works as a clinical therapist.
Meghan's Dad was very successful as a lighting director in the film and TV business.
He used to work on General Hospital and that show was the first one that Meghan appeared on as an actress.
Meghan seems quite lucky. She was able to get started in showbiz thanks to help from her Dad.
She was born beautiful and that's luck, too. Now, she's becoming a member of the royal family.
However, there's bound to be some downside and Meghan may find that being away from her family is the downside.
2. HER ROMANCE WILL CHANGE.
Babies affect our romances for better or worse, whether we are married or not. With babies come big changes!
If Meghan has a baby soon, she's becoming a mom very early in the relationship. It's hard to say if it will cause joy or tension.
It seems like it will be all good, but who knows? Sometimes, royal relationships start out perfect and then the downward spiral begins.
When Princess Diana (Harry's mother) got pregnant, she looked ecstatic.
However, her relationship began to get even worse.
If Meghan's smart, she'll continue to make Harry a priority while she's pregnant,
even though she'll need to follow so many new rules.
She'll keep romance on the front burner. Once she's pregnant, Harry will probably baby her a lot.
He saw what his Mom went through in her marriage and he'll want things to be way different for his bride.
His protectiveness will help Meghan to cope with pregnancy, the new royal rules, and a whole new lifestyle.
1. SHE'LL GET CLOSER TO KATE.
Kate is young and a mommy. Meghan will probably get closer to Kate once she's a mom, too.
Kate is a little bit mysterious. She doesn't reveal as much about herself as Meghan does.
I'd say the Duchess of Cambridge has tons of mystique, like an Old Hollywood film star.
We see Kate and admire her beauty, but we don't really know her. With Meghan, there's a lot more information.
In time, people may get Meghan information overload.
They may start to get sick of her, because she offers up so much info about herself.
Kate tends to be a lot more reserved. Perhaps Kate will take Meghan under her wing,
help her through pregnancy and act as a mentor while Meghan adjusts to royal life.
Kate's been doing this for years now and she definitely knows the ropes.
The worst-case scenario is that these two won't get along. That could cause some drama.
Will they get competitive, like Princess Diana and Fergie did? It's just too soon to tell.
