Hey guys, this is my forest navigation video part two
In the first one we discussed navigation more generally
in this one we´ll head out for some practice
We´ll head to the forest with a map and compass
and talk about reading a terrain map, choosing a route,
finding landmarks, and
understanding the form of the terrain
and using it as a means for navigation
For me this is an essential skill
It adds very much to outdoor adventures
to understand the land, the terrain
and not just go blindly from A to B
without following a map for details
We´ll head to a lakeshore area I haven´t visited before
it´s about 1.2 kilometres (0,8 miles) through the forest
it´s a remote area with no trails or such
not marked on the map at least
Let´s head out and see what it´s like
Right now we are at a lakeshore here
our destination is this area here
it´s 1,2 kilometres beeline
it´s a rather large lake
on the north shore is a building, likely a summer cottage
otherwise it is natural land
an area like this might be great to spend time in
so let´s go and explore it
a logging road goes nearby here
but we´re not going along a muddy forest road, are we
we´ll go through here and see the nature
and for some practice in navigation
Reading a terrain map, I first
look for bigger landmarks, like the lakes here
they are big and clear landmarks
we´ll definetely use them as waypoints
there´s also two hills in the area
good landmarks for travel, obviously
we could go over or around,
the height of the terrain is good to understand
it´s obviously a lot more straining to climb the hills
But the hills are often beautiful places to visit
The color on the map means open rock
or a very spacious forest
there might even be a good view in some direction
There are two streams here
Very clear landmarks to follow
it´s a solid route basically, unless
the bush is very thick next to the stream
we can´t know that beforehand
but we´ll find out in a while
if it´s too thick for hiking next to the stream,
we can cut through the woods
or even closer to the hills
and continue from there
So my first waypoint will be
the small lake here
either via the stream or
through the bush
About the symbols on the terrain map;
this tells us it´s a coniferous forest
the white on the map is all forest
these are old bog drainage ditches
they are narrow and easy to jump over
the thin blue line marks them
they are never too wide for an adult to cross
This one is a lot wider, or can be
possibly too wide to jump over easily
tough to cross unless there´s a fallen tree over it
The light blue area means forested bog
it varies a lot what it´s like
could be easily passable or too wet
The dark yellow means open bog
usually no trees at all on them
it is marked as easily passable
horizontal stripes on the bog would mean it´s hardly passable or unpassable by foot
The brown lines are contour lines, obviously
and the brownish color means open rock
usually it´s forested too, but very open
not literally open rock
an upside down ´T´ marks a boulder or rock
I´m not sure if it means a spesific size
but large enough to be marked on a map
the small black triangles means rock land
not good for travel usually
might be a bad idea to go there
likely better to avoid the rocky part
but we´ll see what it´s like
Here´s an old kota shelter
abandoned years ago, by scouts I´ve heard
the door is locked, but there´s a hole in the back
We´re at the small lake
it was reasonably easy to get here
there was one thick part, had to take distance from the stream
a forest with no special features is
easy to lose your way in, for me atleast
I checked my direction a couple of times
We came from here, about halfway was very thick bush
I had to go away from the stream
and needed to check the direction
I headed straight to north
I would return to the stream that way
because it turns to east in front of me
I knew I´d stay on the map that way
We´re at the east end of the lake now
there´s this rock slope nearby, and
I think I saw it through the bush. Let´s head over there
it´s slightly northeast from here
Here is the slope, maybe four meters high
on the map it´s a black curved line
with ´spikes´on the outside to mark the slope
it means difficult to pass
Here´s one of the boulders
this one is very large, marked on the map also
And here is the rocky area
another clear landmark near the shore
Pretty thick ground vegetation here
the shores must be shallow and very muddy
so this is forested bog,
marked with light blue color on the map
it is marked as easily passable, but
in reality it´s not that easy
It´s been a sweaty and tiresome hike,
although the distance is not much
being in a new area makes me more alert somehow
not relaxed like in a more familiar area
I definetely need food now,
and I have some chicken soup and coffee here
Gonna eat soon
So I´m on the way back here
the lakeshore area wasn´t that great
nice view unto the lake but,
very soft ground and thick undergrowth
I didn´t even walk through
all of the shore there
Coming back, I took a compass direction south
and over the highest point
it was a nice place up there
a lichen covered rock top hill
a luminous, open area amidst the gloomy forest
I came back down next to the small lake
and back to the stream, where I am now
This was a typical day hike I like to so a lot
especially if I get bored of National Parks
with a lot of people sometimes
There´s noone here in the regular backcountry woods
Navigation skill is important here
to be able to roam freely and independently
without trails or other manmade landmarks
Navigating is not that difficult, but
it takes some effort at first to get started
it´s a lot of fun after the initial hardship
exploring new areas is fun
I can still have my GPS or phone as backup
so I can locate myself on the map if needed
I use different methods of navgation
sometimes I use my phone, but I think that
using a map and compass is the best skill
You really learn to read a map and look for
landmarks on the map and on the terrain
the best way to really understand the land
Thanks for your interest, we´ll see in the next one. Bye!
