South and North Korea held a special groundbreaking ceremony this week to

highlight their shared desire to eventually link and modernize their

railways and roads but before any actual construction can get underway it's

crucial to know the exact condition of railways and roads in the north and two

sides also need to carefully consider how to make it an effective transport

network Oh jung-hee reports North Korean leader Kim jong-un once spoke very

frankly about the status of the regime's transportation system that was at his

first summit with South Korean president moon jae-in back in April chairman Kim

said that he's concerned to be honest that things could be quite uncomfortable

for president moon when he visits North Korea due to poor local transportation

systems he had it it could be quite embarrassing and such remark has been

verified by South Korean inspectors went to the north for rail surveys they found

trains there can go about 20 to 60 kilometers an hour tracks where trains

don't run regularly have deteriorated while some sections can't allow high

speeds because of steep hills curves tunnels and bridges the rail condition

isn't too good and we thought it to be impossible for trains to run at high

speed the case is a similar for the Western race

roads are in similar or worse conditions among different modes of transport North

Korea depends on railways by up to 86 percent on roads by 12 percent and sea

travel by 2 percent roads have been less highlighted as associate less developed

and relays because of the regime's economic focus on heavy industries and

the high cost in contrast South Korea has a road centered transport network

enabling free movement of people and goods the stark difference between the

two Koreas transport network suggests that the two sides should focus on

preventing ineffectiveness in logistics connection

for example when they operated their joint factory park the Kaesong

Industrial Complex the South Korean items had to be carried

by truck by train and then by truck again to enter the complex the situation

also prompts another question how and to what extent should North Korea's

railways and roads be quote modernized if more roads are created and railways

are upgraded in the North then more Goods and passengers will come and go

which will lead to a demand for higher speed and better technology how to

replace the existing four railway system set communication facilities and provide

electricity is what really needs to be considered linking and upgrading the

inter-korean transport network could take decades and cost an astronomical

amount of money but the economic benefits are expected to outweigh the

cost being over 2.5 billion u.s. dollars for the next 30 years just for linking

the Western Railways and above all experts point out the transport

connection could lead Pyongyang to gradually open up its economy Oh

which I'll bet you've noticed from talking to writers,

is that most of the stuff

that we think we're writing about in books

is very difficult to talk about straight out.

You know, question and answer.

In some sense, it probably can't be talked about directly,

and that's why people make up stories about it.

This is all a big defense,

because I feel like what I'm saying is so simple and so reductive

I mean, it's a legitimate fear to have.

I think about these things all the time.

I think, well, I like literature, but at the same time,

why am I doing this?

And how can I try to preserve these things?

So, you know, it's a paradox for me too.

So, for this reason I think it's something you can think about.

Sure.

Well, there are a number of trade-offs.

In the United States, there's another division between corporate publishers

and non-profit publishers,

who are often very small and do a lot of poetry and avant-garde fiction.

If you are "lucky",

these are square quotes,

if you are lucky enough to be published by a corporate publisher,

you get more exposure,

you get reviewed in the New York Times instead of just your local newspaper,

you get translated into other languages.

But literary stuff loses money for corporate publishers

almost all the time.

And one of the ways they try to keep from losing money is marketing this stuff.

And for reasons that everyone has tried to explain to me,

but I still don't understand it,

having the author go around and talk and read -

The thing they most like to do is send you to a bookstore

and you give a reading at a bookstore

and there's maybe 200 people there,

but, while you're in town to do the reading for the bookstore,

you talk to the local newspaper and you maybe do something like this.

And that generates free advertising for the book.

My problems with it are the following:

my stuff, I don't feel like, is meant to be read out loud.

It's not supposed to live on the breath.

There isn't enough punctuation in it.

And I don't feel like I read it out loud very well, A).

And B) , I find ...

When there's a question and answer, like you and I are having,

although you and I are having a much more lengthy one,

but particularly with a newspaper reporter

or a question-and-answer at the end of a reading,

the question is easy to answer if it's dull or stupid.

The good questions are questions that can't be answered

in a Q-and-A format, right?

They're ones where you would have to sit down with a pot of tea

or a pot of coffee.

There are things that can be answered only in conversation

between two people.

And so I always feel vaguely

fradulent.

There's a thing about doing this

where you're helping me.

We're pretending we're having a conversation.

They're going to publish the book well,

even though I don't think my English can really be translated into German

because it's very idiomatic.

Great advertisment, I'm sure.

And all they need,

they need this one thing from you to help them sell enough books

maybe so that they don't lose money on it.

It then becomes very difficult to say, no.

On the other hand, I don't think it's very good,

I don't think it's good.

Maybe a show like this?

There's no analog for this in the U.S.,

but the whole going around and reading in bookstores thing,

it's turning writers into kind of

penny-ante or cheap versions of celebrities.

People aren't usually coming out to hear you read,

they're coming out to see what you look like

and see whether your voice matches the voices in their head when they read.

And none of it's important.

It's icky.

I don't know if there's a German translation for "icky".

In terms of "banal", I don't know.

"Banal", to me, means,

general and simplistic and superficial and vapid.

If you do work like this, you pay certain prices.

You don't make as much money.

Not as many people read your stuff.

But people who are reading it and are interested in it,

you're pretty sure ...

The thing that I like about doing this kind of stuff is that I'm pretty sure

my readers are about as smart as I am.

First Months at Syn Studio Art School – CA2 - Duration: 3:14.

Hi everyone. So I recently finished first term at Concept Art Diploma Course here at

Syn Studio School. Yeah, three months of drawing.

What have I learned?

From my social appearance probably not much, but as Anthony Walsh, director and founder of

school said on introduction, we are not here to boost our egos.

So lot of progress is not evidential and not cool/polished/whatever enough to collect likes,

hearths and virtual fame. At start of the course, school lend us powerful computer,

Wacom tablet and we also got a few starting books from the pen of Scott Robinson.

So small recap: This term we had five classes.

Two of them were anatomy related. In anatomy class we went back to roots,

start from fundamentals, learning skeleton and muscles. Personally, I

struggled a lot. My classmates are drawing without hesitation and common

feedback that I got, was, that I had to become more confident in my linework.

We are the sculpt a few pieces: hand, leg and full body.

Other classes were more concept art oriented. In Sketching for Production,

We learned about perspective, mirroring, drawing shadows.

You can assemble a lot these days in 3D programs, but knowing how to construct object with

pencil and the paper is pretty handy and universally useful.

Intro to Concept Art class brought us design thinking into the workflow.

Final group project contain characters for our imaginary real-time strategy game.

And finally, Visual Reference Library with Daniel Kvasznicza.

I enjoyed this class so much.

All little tweaks for Photoshop, color grading, layer organization, smart brushes,

constructing in SketchUp, and rendering in KeyShot.

I pushed my city environment a little bit and it all

started with this photo that I took in downtown,

that for sake of novelty I rotated

The end of term is sealed by Vernissage. It is mostly for students of

the school that study shorter or more specific courses here, but with

Christmas atmosphere behind the door,

it is a nice place to be.

It is awesome to be surrounded by my classmates, each of them with different strengths,

some of them already making impressive concepts, characters and robots.

knowing that we are all here, because we love to draw is utterly inspiring.

33rd my third year doing this I started in December of 2016 so it will be my

I just have my eyes open when I'm in the streets where I'm you know especially

their cash you know so yeah they're really you need they will take this

CNC Engraver Unboxing and Assembly- the SainSmart Genmitsu - Duration: 8:01.

Hey everyone!

Today we're going to build a CNC engraver from a kit- it's the SainSmart Genmitsu.

For those of you who don't know, CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control.

Which is how we control Lasercutters and 3D printers also,

but we don't really call them CNC machines.

It's a little confusing.

Anyway, as it turns out we mostly use CNC

to describe a computer controlled machine tool, that cuts away material.

In DIY this usually means a spinning cutting tool that moves on the same X Y and Z axis a 3D printer does,

but instead of squirting out hot plastic that dries in layers, it cuts away material.

Last year I got into metalworking a tiny bit for my BattleBao combat RC car project.

It's a lot of fun but working metal with hand tools when you are a small person- not fun.

I'm not just smaller, I'm about a third or less as strong as most guys are.

Imagine that power drill weighing three times as much, twisting your wrist three times as hard,

all while holding a grip made for a hand three times as large.

Yeah yeah, I'm Chinese don't try to math me in the comments-

square-cube law is not doing me any favors.

Anyway, power tools cutting metal in a small apartment-

it would be pushing my luck with my very patient neighbors.

But, as it turns out I may not have those neighbors for long-

my rent is going up 50% next year.

That's pretty normal for Shenzhen because the city is growing so fast.

I'm thinking if I can get some small space in a factory complex, maybe I can live there, fix it up a little bit

and have a space where I can use machine tools that won't bother any neighbors.

I don't know we'll see,

I've got a few months to figure it out.

The thing is though,

if I ever do have access to a proper CNC machine I want to have some idea of what I'm doing.

I want to put in the study time so I don't make a complete fool of myself when the time comes.

So SainSmart offering me their Genmitsu CNC Router Kit this week was really good timing.

I hope it's a good little machine to learn on,

but lets open it up, put it together and find out.

Ok, I downloaded the software, and the CNC router kit is all set.

But I'm not sure the wires are all in the right position.

So I'm going to test it without the cutter first.

Well, for safety, I'm going to cover myself up.

Ok, now the real thing.

Ok so not super impressive but as I said I'm using it to learn on,

so the results are going to be pretty modest at first.

You'll have to be patient with me.

As far as putting it together it's basically a 3D printer

but with a spin-y thing instead of a squirty thing.

It's a lot like putting together the BarBot I made.

I think the collet should come attached to the spindle-

I don't think most people want to use a torch like I had to.

I kind of wish it was at least partially assembled,

but if there's one thing 3D printers have taught me

it's that whatever time you save with having things already assembled,

you lose not knowing exactly how to take it apart when it's time to troubleshoot.

So I think putting this together from parts was probably best for me if I want to learn,

I'm just being lazy.

I know it looks like I just pulled this out of the box and started milling things-

but it was only because I did a lot of studying beforehand. That's not any fault in the Genmitsu,

CNC is a big step up from 3D printing and it seems like SainSmart has done everything

they can to make that learning experience as easy as possible.

Next time I'm going to try making something of my own design,

it looks a little tricky but I think I can do it-

and remember if I can do it, anyone can do it!

Hey everyone!

This is a bit of follow up to my last video about this channel being defunded-

now I don't want to spend time on that.

It's done.

So long as I've got my tools and books they can't stop me.

But I wanted to talk about something really offensive

people have been posting in my comments section

"I'm sorry I can't donate".

That's bullshit, never apologize for that.

I've said it before I'll say it again-

man makes the money, money does not make the man- or woman.

Come on- we all know if I was the kind of girl who was about money

I could be living a pretty easy life.

But my living room is my workshop,

I don't even have a sofa and I take the bus or metro most places.

Anyone that watches my channel knows the nicest things I have are my tools-

no designer handbags or day spas.

I know a lot of you see obnoxious well-off Chinese who go abroad-

and I'm sorry for how some of them behave,

just like I often talk about those Chinese who steal IP-

and I speak against that here in China in Chinese in front of large tech industry audiences.

But most Chinese still don't come from rich families,

I've been broke most of my life-

that's why I taught myself to code online.

I had a meal card in college for the cafeteria but no pocket money.

I've been invited to dorm parties when I didn't have anything to bring because things were

so tight that month.

I don't want anyone else to feel like they have to apologize for their financial situation.

I had friends who bought two bags of chips and gave me one to bring to the party so I wouldn't feel bad.

So some people who watch this channel can afford to help a bit, those two snack bag friends-

that's wonderful and thank you,

but that does not make people who just can't do that any less welcome.

It's very important to me that everyone understand that.

I will try to raise money here- and I'm not ashamed of that-

I work hard, my day is mostly manual labor on builds and studying new tools,

offline work would be easier and pay better

but I think I provide honest entertainment and I like people to see what Shenzhen is like.

But YouTube doesn't owe me a living,

if things don't work out I'll close the channel and go back to coding.

It's just I don't want anyone feeling bad if cash is tight and they can't help out-

some people bring snacks, some people bring songs, jokes and good cheer.
