- My name is Prez, and I work at Thrillist.
Around these parts, I am known
as the 5-Dollar Lunch Guy.
Every episode, I am gonna put you guys onto
the finest New York grub, for $5 or less.
Hello and welcome to the "Prez Eating Food for $5
On-Camera Show," with your host, your boy, Prez.
Our first guest is here, and it's Disembodied Hand.
And, he's giving us our first mission.
And, it is, bao. Wow! Bao, one of my favorite things to eat.
- Yo, what are you guys doing over here?
This isn't your set.
- Oh, well, uh, see what had happened was,
we got the key and, and, uh, you know.
(mumbled fighting)
- Bao. Interesting choice. It's like a steamed, Asian-style
bun, filled with whatever you want.
Now, I can think of a few places
off the top of my head that have it.
But, top of my list has to be Eddie Huang's BaoHaus on 14th.
It makes one of my favorite sandwiches in New York.
Let's do this.
So these are the rules of "Operation 5 Buck Lunch":
It's gotta be good, 'cause nobody wants bad food for lunch.
No big chains, 'cause that's just too easy.
It's gotta be $5 or less.
And whatever I don't use today, rolls over
into the next episode.
- What did you have for lunch today?
- I mean, I haven't had lunch,
but I am going to probably get Dos Toros.
- Ah, that's sweet. That's good.
- Yeah, basically, it's like Chipotle, but bigger.
- That's not bad. That's not bad.
If I gave you five bucks, right now,
and you can go anywhere with that five bucks,
where would you go and eat?
- I'm gonna get some kind of small fried chicken,
from somewhere.
But Manhattan's not very good for that.
- And if you were back home, in England,
what would you go and buy?
- Go to KFC. - KFC?
- The KFC in America is rubbish.
- Really?
- Yeah, the KFC in England is great.
- Wow. Shots fired. - Can I get a selfie?
- Yeah, go ahead. - One, two--
- Fun fact: Bao sandwiches are the perfect street food.
They're easy to make, they're transportable,
and unlike dumplings, you can eat them with your hands
which makes it perfect for lunch.
Perfect for me.
- So, in the city, you have a few main streets.
You got 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd,
59th, 86th, and 96th.
Now all of these different streets
are huge main streets in the city,
where you can get anything, whether you are eating,
drinking, or just hanging out.
Now 14th Street is just a little bit different.
It has a different feel, a different atmosphere.
It's more connected to the downtown,
and it has cooler stuff.
Now, Mack, give me a cool transition.
- Let's go in.
(restaurant noises)
- Ahh, memory lane. Straightaway, two of my favorite things
are happening right now.
As you know, I love myself an open kitchen,
and I love it when a delicious smell is wafting out of it.
This is somewhere you take your friends
on a casual, no-big-deal,
come-get-delicious-food hangout
with your friends. It's cool
You guys make my favorite sandwich,
which is the Chairman Bao.
I'm about to put y'all on -- y'all about to learn.
What would you say is the most popular bao here?
- Definitely the Chairman Bao.
So, it's super-tender pork belly
with a little bit of tangy relish,
that's balanced by the sweetness of the peanuts --
that's also a signature of ours.
- I think we need a little bit of a crash course
about what else on this menu is kinda lit.
- The Birdhaus is also gonna be great.
It's fried chicken, can't go wrong.
- Can't go wrong.
- And then my personal favorite's gonna be the fish bao.
That one is delicious.
- I've never had that one.
Can I please have a Chairman Bao?
- Yes you may.
- Let me get my moolah.
Here you go.
- We are actually card-only.
- Uh. Thanks. I appreciate it.
(girl laughs)
Magic of editing will fix that, right?
- All right, there you go.
- Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
You guys, a beautiful thing you are about to learn today.
- This is actually my first time here, correct.
- Oh, beautiful.
OK, what did you order?
- So I actually got the three bao with taro.
No idea what taro was, but, - Ooh.
- Yeah, got that instead.
- Yo, you're about to be a very happy man, my guy.
How is that?
- Phenomenal.
(men laughing)
I think my face should say it all.
- His face. (laughter)
Yo, he makes the face I make every week for you guys.
- One, two, three.
- Let's just get into looks.
Because everything about this sandwich
is attractive as hell.
Now, you have this beautiful, cloudy little bao,
which is followed up by the peanuts,
which is followed behind by the pork belly,
which is soft and delicious.
And, then you have this relish on the bottom,
we gonna get into that, but let's get our first bites.
Look and learn.
(background restaurant sounds)
Holy shhh... yo, everything about this is beautiful.
The flavor profile, savory-sweet.
Good combination, can't mess it up, oh they do it so well.
The relish really cuts through everything else.
It's very, kinda, acidy. You know?
It's good.
Every single piece of this sandwich,
comes together really well.
And my favorite part of it is the peanuts, though.
It's the first thing you smell,
and the last thing you taste,
because you get it on both ends.
I love me some pork belly, guy. Mmm.
It's so tender. It's a full-body experience.
You know what I mean? You're looking at it,
it's attractive; you're smelling it, it's attractive;
you're tasting it, it's beautiful.
Like, why wouldn't you eat this?
(background soulful music)
Mmm. This might not be the biggest sandwich in the world,
but it packs the most punch, in my opinion.
It's one of my favorite sandwiches.
I can usually eat four or five of these in a row.
(yummy chewing noises)
This sandwich, 100%, cosign it.
Eat it. Come here and get this.
You're welcome.
Yo! What's up?
Didn't we just have the perfect
14th Street date of all time? I think we did.
We, you know, hung out at BaoHaus,
met some amazing people, ate one of the best sandwiches
in the city for under five bucks.
Yo, shout out to homegirl. She definitely
put us on to the fish sandwich. Uh,
I'm not a fish guy, but I'll definitely
come back and try it next time.
The food hit every single one of our points:
It's not a big chain -- they only got two locations.
It's under five bucks -- in our budget --
and we got some change to use next time.
And, lastly, and most importantly,
it was damn good. Yo! You're welcome.
As we say in Uptown: shout- out dipsay, your, bye.
What's going on guys?
