♪ Hey
(audience cheers and applauds)
- Thank you so much.
- How did Dead Man Winter come about?
- Oh god, I don't even know.
I think the first time I used the name
was probably 10 years ago,
but what we're doing today here
is probably the first time it's been a band
and it feels like a band.
It's been such an organic thing
that I don't know where it came from, really.
It's just something to do.
- Yeah, I mean, I have a studio.
(guys laughing)
For the listening audience.
- [Host] What's it called?
- Realphonic Studios.
It's in Minneapolis.
These guys came in the studio,
we started working on a record.
By the end of the record, it was an EP,
I wasn't technically in the band,
but I was playing some parts.
By the time the EP came out I was in the band.
- Y'know, everybody involved
is doing other things musically,
so once in a while personnel shifts
for a show here and there,
but there's usually somebody else that you know
and have played with before
that can just hop in for a show or two.
- Is being in a band more fluid these days,
more common for people,
like you guys to be in multiple bands?
- I don't know if it's the money, y'know?
You gotta be in 20 bands to pay the bills,
if you wanna be a musician.
- Yeah, I think in any kind of creative endeavor,
it's a hustle for everybody, y'know?
- Yeah.
- So, and I don't even think
it's solely money motivating that.
I feel like it's nice to not do the same thing all the time,
so it's fun to be in a couple of bands, y'know?
And, get different parts of your musical jollies.
And, it's fun to kinda dabble
in other parts of the musical business,
like Erik's studio for one thing.
- Yeah.
- I mean, that was the first time, probably,
we worked together really, was in his studio.
- Yeah.
- So, I think you find a lot of people in music,
probably other things, too, but music is what I know,
that do branch out quite a bit.
- Yeah.
- And, test the waters a little.

- What was it that brought you to Duluth?
- The easy answer would be college,
but the reason I went there instead of somewhere else was,
I think I was maybe 14, 13 or 14 years old.
My dad and I, we decided to go camping,
and check out the north shore,
which we'd heard so much about,
and it completely changed my life, y'know?
And, I remember the first time driving over that hill,
and seeing Lake Superior spread out, and the forest.
Ever since then, that was the only place I wanted to go.
I had kind of a singular mind at that time, I think.
It's like, I'm gonna move there, I'm gonna be a musician,
and that's just how it's gonna, y'know,
I'll figure it out on the way, I guess.
- Did Mankato or Duluth sort of shape your musical sound?
- I'm sure.
- Were there influences from there?
- Yeah, I don't think you can avoid your environment
when you're doing anything like that, y'know?
And, I can't think of like a specific, y'know,
this song came through Lake Superior,
it's something that literal, but,
where you live determines so much of your daily routine,
and your, y'know, what happens in your brain.
You can't avoid that, for sure.
- So, does the legend Dylan rule large in Duluth?
- Oh, yeah, I think so.
- I mean, Duluth definitely claims Bob Dylan,
and, by birth, I guess, they're right.
What a mascot to have, y'know?
That's cool with me.
But yeah, it's kinda everywhere there.
It's cool, I mean, he's one of my favorite things
like ever, y'know, so, it's cool to have the place
of Dylan also be one of my favorites to be in.

- [Host] Dead Man Winter just recorded at Pachyderm Studios.
- Yeah.
- What can you tell us about Pachyderm?
- Lots, probably my favorite studio
in which I've ever been.
It's outside of Cannon Falls, Minnesota,
kinda tucked away in this little wooded valley
with a trout stream,
and it's got this phenomenally designed studio
that sounds amazing.
And then, separate from that,
there's a house in which you can stay while you're there,
so it's a really,
kind of an immersive recording environment.
- That's pretty cool.
- So, that's how I like how to work, in that capacity.
Everybody stays there the whole time,
sleep there, eat together, y'know,
get up and go fishing every morning, record,
and it's just like a little retreat, kinda, y'know?
- So, with the extra fishing and stuff,
how long did it take to record?
- I think we were there for five days.
- Oh, nice.
- I think that's what it was.
And, that's not a lot of time, really, to make an album,
but it's the time we had, and, y'know,
to be honest, it's not a cheap place to go.
You know, sometimes a creative boundary is nice for me,
to have, like, okay, you have this much time,
make an album.
- Yeah.
- Or, you have this much time to write,
or, here's your budget, try to make something within that.
And, I kinda need that structure to get anything done.

- [Host] So, you started your own record label, right?
- Yeah.
- What does a label do for an artist in this day and age?
- Well, I mean, in the most basic terms,
it takes their work and puts it out to the general public.
I mean, that's the basic job of a record label, right?
So, there's publicity, there's streaming,
there's licensing, y'know,
even help with touring and studio work a little bit,
but it really depends on
the artist and what they need, y'know?
We want to take artists we believe in,
and albums we believe in,
and put them out in the best way possible,
without interfering with the artist's work.
I mean, they have complete creative control, y'know?
Our deal, on the financial side of things,
our deal is very artist friendly, and it's not a machine
that's really built to make a lot of money.
It's really just, I mean, I wanted to have a label
because I wanted to put records out that I like,
that I felt weren't getting enough attention.
- Passion projects, yeah.
- Yeah, for sure.
I mean, you have to be a little dense
to start a record label in 2016 for money, y'know?
I mean, when's the last time you went to Best Buy
and bought a CD for $19, y'know?
I mean, I'll go by music, but even,
I'm saying like it used to be that was the only medium,
and it was very expensive.
And now, the value, not the value,
but the selling point of physical media
has just gone down so much that you can't rely on,
hey, I have a great album,
I'm gonna go sell a million CDs of it.
That just doesn't happen anymore.
- Yeah.
- Maybe for Adele.
- Is it the trick then to just get out on the road?
Have you found, maybe,
what's the one thing that could really help?
- I mean, touring, that's come in to supplement, right?
I mean, touring used to be thought of
as an expense in the music business,
as like a promotional tool for selling albums,
and now it's most people's income,
and so that is a huge part of it.
I mean, really, we would have a hard time
working with somebody that wasn't ready to tour full time,
cos that's where they sell music.
That's how their popularity grows, so to speak,
but that's one thing that we haven't been able
to completely substitute with a streaming product
is live shows, y'know?
You can't really replace that experience for people,
so, I mean, in my own experience,
that's how I make my living is touring,
and most of the people I know are in the same boat.
