Form follows sound electric guitar designer Ulrich Teuffel

"I've got more wood than I can use, I make 20 to 25 guitars a year.

This, here is a flamed Swietenia mahogany in incredibly beautiful quality.

When it's offered to you it doesn't matter if you need it or not.

Then I make alternative designs on my computer fairly soon.

Just rough estimates. Once I've drawn the guitar this way I can modify it any time.

First I do a rough prototype and again have to make changes.

I build them in "quick and dirty" – I don't varnish either –

I assemble it and then see were it fits and where it still jams

and only then do I make the next important modification.

When I began to make guitars, not following the old paradigms

that you read about it specialist journals, and tried experimenting with the materials myself,

that's when I saw what really makes a guitar.

At first you believe in authority, if everybody's writing about it

they must know best, only later do you see that this discourse is very much influenced by hearsay

and a lot of the discourse participants, journalists, for instance, don't make guitars themselves

and are basically never in the situation of trying something out by experiment.

But if you try something out in the workshop yourself, you recreate the pickup, the guitar,

you suddenly see that "this isn't what I read."

And for 10 years I'd built guitars that looked like classic e-guitars from the 60's, 70's,

and at some point I realised that if you free yourself from this image of the classic guitar

and accept that an instrument then looks different,

then your job as designer is to develop a formal language or optics for what will emerge,

and then to apply it as consistently as possible.

But a large majority make music as "re-enactment," and naturally need a visual conformity

in the guitar, just as with their stage costumes.

The guitar's form is very much bound up with identity in people's minds,

and my intention is instead not to overdo this identity.

Because in the end the form is a consequence of the guitar's construction

Billy Gibbons, the ZZ-Top guitarist, for instance, did an album with the "birdfish,"

so one can now think of it as a studio guitar because it's very adjustable,

but there are also musicians who own this guitar

but would never play it on stage because it just doesn't look right.

Then I have lots of customers who collect my instruments,

who see it as an artwork and start with one guitar

and at some point want all my models, sometimes all the different versions as well.

In recent years I've found it more interesting when my guitars are understood or loved visually.

I've therefore had customers in recent years who buy a "birdfish," in this case a "rhodium birdfish,"

in other words a decorative version of my "birdfish," even though they can't play guitar.

That is now a distinction for me that for me is at least equal to my tonal ones,

since good-sounding guitars are a given, the thing now is creative freedom,

now I approach form in another way, like with the "Antonio" here,

that is a classical form, and now I'm making a retro-guitar from this form

and see where it's taking me now.

It's not that I have a tonal concept and a form, and the musicians have to see

where this takes them, but I look to see where it's taking me now.

Right now, I'm doing a new model that will also be something archetypal once more.

It'll be a take on the F-hole guitar that arose out of jazz and was later used in rockabilly.

With this form quotation, with the history of this jazz guitar's form,

I'd like to make a rock guitar that also has two pickups

and make another kind of music like the "Antonio" here,

but it will also be something creative, where I'm dealing with this form and nothing else."

ENGLISH VOCABULARY LESSON MY FAVOURITE WORDS - Duration: 4:05.

Hello everyone welcome back.

Today I want to share with you some of my favorite words in English.

I've picked quite a random group of words so I will first explain to you what the word

means the definition, I will give you an example of the word in a sentence and then I will

give you a little explanation to why I chose this word. So let's start.

The first word I have picked is Cliche.

Cliche.

This is a saying or an idea which is used to much.

It's overused that it kind of becomes boring and uninteresting or unimportant.

A good example in English would be the saying 'There's plenty of fish in he sea' this is

used when talking about love or relationships meaning there's plenty more people out there

for you, but it's something we hear all the time something people always say to try to

cheer somebody up.

That is a Cliche.

The reason I chose the word is partly because I like the sound Cliche and also I quite like

having a word to use for this situation.

The word actually comes from French which you will see I have actually left the accent

on which is quite rare in England to use accents in our language.

My next word I have chosen is Jaded.

Jaded.

This is when somebody becomes bored and uninterested in something because they have had a bad experience

usually or a negate experience in it.

For example it's quite common to use the word Jaded when talking about love.

We could have the sentence 'Tom was very jaded after his wife left him' I like this word

because it's quite powerful and it's quite different.

It's quite unique word.

So that's why I have chosen this one.

Jaded.

My third word is Awesome.

Awesome is another way of saying extremely good or great and I use it a lot every day,

that's the main reason I chose it.

So we can say for example You are Awesome.

Your awesome.

The next word is Banter.

Banter is to tease or lightly insult your friends in a very joking playful way.

So you might bring up something embarrassing your friend did to try and lightly insult

them to give them a bit of banter.

So in a sentence we could have 'Banter is very common in England' and this is true.

English people like to have banter with their friends they like to be playful with their

friends.

I chose this word because it's a nice way to explain this and it also does sound quite

nice as well.

It's quite a different word and I think it's quite an English thing.

Banter.

The last word I have chosen is Adventure.

Adventure is trying something new or slightly different.

It's doing something unusual which is usually a fun exciting activity.

It might sometimes involve a little risk.

So for example we could have 'I'm going on an adventure to Africa' I chose this word

because it's quite important to me.

I like the idea of living life as if it's an adventure or I like experiencing lot's

of adventures.
