to find out how beer is bringing people together...

...to meet amazing homebrewers
and to give one of them a chance to brew their beer
at my brewery, Golden Road.

Hawaii is truly paradise.
The beaches, the waves, the people.
But craft beer isn't really the first thing
that comes to mind when visiting these islands.
Though there are about 20 breweries here,
there aren't as many beer brands in local bars,
simply because it costs more to ship them from the mainland.
But I have a feeling the homebrewing scene
is where the action is.
So I'm going to meet a local expert named Euler
and get some advice on where to look.

It's a fishing spot that I come to all the time.
Unbelievable.
And, uh, we got you a fishing pole, too.

How long have you been brewing beer?
Uh, seven years, but professionally, for a year.
-Cool. -Yeah, yeah.
So what -- what about Hawaii beer culture
do you think is different from elsewhere?
The beer scene here is a little bit on the young side,
but, I mean, we are -- we are --
we're all about beer, you know.
But it's just happening now, right?
It's just happening now, and that's what makes Hawaii so unique.
We can play with different flavors
and different ingredients, 'cause our fruits
grow year round on the islands, so...
Yeah, so just more flavors, different flavors?
Different flavors, yeah.
But, I mean, you think Hawaii and you think light beers.
-Yeah. -So why are people excited
about craft beer now and not years ago?
Five years ago, we would only drink
what would be distributed in Hawaii.
Yeah.
So I guess my incentive to start homebrewing
was to try these beers from all around the world.
Yeah.
You know, these lambics from Belgium.
So how'd you get 'em?
-You had to brew it. -Okay, yeah.
That's the only way, you know, so that
was incentive to -- to learn different styles.
You couldn't -- so that's why you started brewing.
-Absolutely. -'Cause you couldn't --
You couldn't buy the beer at a store, so you had to make it.
You couldn't. Yeah, so you had to make it.
That's awesome. So they ain't biting, my friend.
We caught a few fish earlier before you came.

Meg: Thanks to Euler's recommendation,
I'm off to meet my first homebrewers, Joe and Pono.
Pono: Without a doubt, it's definitely an exciting time
here in Hawaii for homebrewing, craft brews.
I mean, we all grew up seeing dads and uncles and grandfathers
drinking lagers and stuff like that.
And it was kind of cool. You need bottles.
It's kind of cool to, like, break out of that for a little bit.
Our philosophy is beer's going to taste a million times better
after you've earned it,
after you've put some time in to work for it.
I think the lifestyle kind of plays into a lot of things.
I mean, we do a lot of working out, but we also do
a lot of drinking beer, too,
so the two balance each other out well.
Meg: I'm headed to meet Joe and Pono, who are homebrewers,
but all I see is guys throwing balls at palm trees.
So, excited to check it out.

You're dead-lifting kegs, huh?
-Shoulder cleaning 'em. -Shoulder cleaning 'em?

So, I'm in Hawaii.
Should I have a Mai Tai or should I be drinking beer?
Pono: I'll be perfectly honest.
I've actually never had a Mai Tai.
-Really? -Never.
And you've been here your whole life?
-Yep. -You know, for us,
that's exactly what we're trying to get away from.
You know, we're -- we're trying to show that Hawaii is --
is, you know, there's more depth to Hawaii
and we're all about good beer.
You know, I mean, we're so much more
than Mai Tais and grass shacks.
So is this how people drink beer in Hawaii?
Pretty much, yeah, this is what we do.
We -- We -- We enjoy the environment,
what we have, and that's kind of island style.
-Yeah, why -- -We fish.
Why drink at a beer when you've got -- got this outside.
-Absolutely. -Exactly. Exactly.

Meg: I'm a little sore from yesterday's beach workout,
but I'm eager to try Joe and Pono's competition beer.
So I'm headed to Joe's house in Oahu
to see if their beer is as strong as their workout routine.
Joe: We can do some more squats if you want. Hike my backyard.
How about, like, five more squats?

-How about a beer? -No, we're good.
-How about a beer? Cool. -Let's have a beer.
So what did you guys make that I'm going to try?
100% Citra American Pale Ale.
-Yeah. -Little bit lighter.
Lighter, uh, ABV.
-What the ABV? -ABV is 3.5.
-3.5. -3.5.
-So it's a day drinker. -Oh, yeah.
-Day drinker. -So this is a pretty
thirst quenching, have more than one of these type of beer.
-Yep. That's -- That's the goal. -That's always the goal.

Meg: It's sounds like Joe and Pono have made a session beer,
which usually means a drink that has a lower alcohol content
than other craft brews, but still packs great flavor.
These beers are highly drinkable,
perfect for hanging out with friends
or a refreshing reward after a long workout.
Session beers won't exceed 5% alcohol
so you can drink more of them over an extended period of time
without overwhelming your taste buds.
Nice pour there. Good color.
-There you go. -Thank you.
So I'm buying into this culture of working your ass off
and then getting back and enjoying a beer.
Absolutely. I mean, the idea is a lifestyle.
It's something you can maintain.
You can do these things -- You're devoted to it for life.
This isn't a weight loss prevention cure.
-Exactly. -This is a lifestyle.
This is not a short-time thing, these are life changes,
kind of -- kind of deal, so... -Yeah, yeah, and it's not
just about the vanity of getting a beer belly
or whatever, it's about feeling good.
We like to drink in the -- in the day,
you know, at the beach in the sun.
And if it's too heavy, you can have one and done.
-Yeah. -My neighbor right down the way,
when we gave him a beer, he was like,
"Oh, tastes good, but can only drink one."
-Yeah. -"I like drink all night."
-Yeah. -So then we were like,
oh, there's something to that, you know.
-Yeah. -So...

Um, I would expect more Citra.

Little more time on the Citra.
But for 3.5%, you guys definitely made
a well-rounded, well-balanced beer.
The biggest challenge is usually getting the mouth feel right...
Yeah. ...when you -- when you've got that low ABV beer.
Yeah. Beers can be thin or they're not as complex.
But this is a very well-made, balanced beer, so...

Meg: In addition to tourism and outdoor living,
Hawaii is a major strategic location for the US Military.
Today, there are over 49,000
active duty personnel living in the state.
One of our next homebrewers is in active service here,
and he and his wife have invited me to the local veteran's bar
to see a different side of Hawaiian beer culture.

-Justin? -Yes. Pleasure.

This is your hangout, your local hangout?
Yeah, military-affiliated, so you're looking at
Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps.
What do you do in the military?
I'm a chief in the Navy, so I'm currently stationed
on a surface ship and develop sailors.
Cool. Did you get into brewing beer pre-military, like...
It was during. We're pretty handy folks, um...
Yeah. And it's more of a social thing, I think.
We enjoy it with each other and share the knowledge,
so that's what we're shooting for.
Yeah. Cool.
Hey, guys. What are you doing here?
Man: So we're all military retirees, the three of us.
Yeah. Yeah.
All of us basically still work for the military,
doing the same or similar jobs that we had.
-What do you like to drink? -IPAs.
-You drink IPAs? -Yeah.
Just finished an IPA.
Cool. Where else do you guys drink beers in Hawaii?
To be honest with you, this is about it.
Well, thank you for your service.
What is it about having an exclusive club like this?
Why not go off-base and go to a regular bar?
There's something about being in the military
that you're never going to get on the outside, ever.
Yeah.
You're always going to have that comradery.
It's a brotherhood, period.
Yeah. Whether you served -- whatever service you served in,
what branch, but it's that fun part of it
that you get to needle that next guy that was in the Navy,
you're a Marine, you know, Coast Guard, Air Force, Army,
so there's always that.
Do you guys talk about what you've been through,
especially the guys who've been through tough stuff overseas?
That's one thing nice about this place.
You come here, and the majority of people
that come in here know what you've been through.
Yeah. So they -- they --
Either they experienced it or they --
they just know what it's like.
Everybody understands.
There's always been military here
and it's always been a big part of Hawaii.
Yeah. And I'm going to say,
in my lifetime, it will always be a part of Hawaii.
Yeah. Absolutely. Pretty special.

Meg: The more time I spend in Hawaii,
the more I can see the diversity here.
It's not just palm trees and sandy beaches,
there's a strong sense of community here at local bars,
people coming together for beer
in a place to share their stories.

If I had to describe beer to someone that's never tried it,
it's like when you meet a friend that you're like,
"Uh, not so sure about him or her."
And then you start like, hanging out with them and you're like,
"You know what, they're really growing on me
and now I just love them and I just want
to hang out with them all the time."
And that's how I feel about beer.
Man: It's quite possibly the most dynamic
food products imaginable.
Woman: Probably like a -- a sour seltzer.
Woman #2: It's just this refreshing awesomeness.
Man #2: It's a journey. It -- It changes with a bite of food,
it changes with the air, it changes with the temperature,
it changes with the style, with the people,
with the environment.
Woman #3: When you first taste it,
it's like, damn, this is good.
Woman #4: So it's kind of like going home and eating like,
a pizza, except you're drinking your pizza.
[ Laughing ] And it's a little bit tangier.
And it has carbonation.
Meg: I'm going to meet Justin and Jen and try their beer.
They are a military family.
You know, military life is not easy,
and so I think it'll be interesting to see
the family side of Hawaiian military life.

Justin: In the military, there's a lot of times
that you kind of just have to put your life on hold.
So we treat every day like it's our last,
because, you know, the deployments could come,
they could go.
Jen: I actually like to joke
that alcohol helps my marriage.
Because when we brew, it is most definitely
a family affair, it's an ohana day.
"Ohana" is family.
It's the basis of most everything in Hawaii.
No matter where we went, we were always able to brew.
I'd have shipmates come over and we do the same thing.

-What's brewing? -Good to see you.

Justin: We have our Coconut Belgian Blonde.
You add coconut to the mash.
And we add coconut to the boil later, as well.
We do 'em both. Okay. So there's two additions.
-There's never enough coconut. -There's never enough coconut.
Meg: Yeah. I've cracked a coconut before
by throwing it on the ground.
[ Cheers ]
Come on. It's somewhat cracked.
Who are these guys cheering us on?
What's going on here?
-That's all ohana. -That's my family.

Meg: There are many ways to flavor a beer,
it just depends on timing.
Typically, if you add elements during fermentation,
the flavor will be stronger,
but adding items during the boil, or whirlpool,
can also create surprising hints of flavor
that won't overpower your base beer.
If you do want a super-intense flavor like Jen and Justin,
add your coconut or other ingredients
during both the fermentation and the boiling stages.

I mean, these guys, they know how to do family,
they know how to do drinking beer.

The aloha vibes in Hawaii are no joke,
and everywhere you turn, beer is bringing people together.
Euler: This happens absolutely every weekend.
It's just a community of friends that are here
only because we all love craft beer.
Meg: I'm thrilled to see that Hawaiians are embracing
the craft beer scene,
and I think this is just the beginning.

What an amazing trip this has been.
It was a tough decision, but I'm thrilled to be bringing
Jen and Justin's coconut-infused beer to the finale in LA.
Their ohana spirit was contagious
and it really showed in their glass of homebrew.
I've got five winners now from across the country.
It all comes down to the final round of judging
back in my brewery, Golden Road,
where one of these brewers will have their beer canned
and distributed on a a major scale.
